Rate this book
DeVon Franklin, New York Times bestselling author of The Wait and prominent Hollywood producer, reveals that secular and spiritual success are not opposites. To have one, you need the other.

Are you tired of living a life paralyzed by fear? Are you anxious to break free of the “beware mentality” that has kept generations of well-meaning people living beneath the fullness of their calling?

You’re unfulfilled because you’ve been convinced that you would lose your faith if you pursued the secular ambitions God has put in your heart. However, until you pursue those ambitions you will miss out on the fullness of God and the success you were created to have.

For too long there’s been a line drawn between the spiritual and the secular, and we have been conditioned to believe that if we cross this line in either direction, we will have gone too far. It’s time to break down this barrier so you are free to go further than any believer has gone before.

The Success Commandments combines spiritual teachings with secular strategies to help you achieve unprecedented success and live the life you were destined to live.

This book has truly blessed my life. Rarely does anyone who as achieved a notable level of success in the entertainment industry stop long enough to send the proverbial elevator back down to those seeking to make a similar ascent. DeVon Franklin, in many ways, is the exception to that and many other rules. Written from a place of personal conviction and experience, DeVon shares what are ten "commandments" that will cause the reader to understand and own their unique difference in the workplace. Understand this - faith is a tool, not an obstacle to success. Be warned, if you are not ready to face yourself and embrace what is required to take your life and career to the next level, then this is not the book for you. But, if you are ready, DeVon will personally escort you to a deeper faith in what God wants to do in and through you, while simultaneously pushing you to go higher in your career and calling. The message is real. The time is now. The question is...are you ready? Your difference is your destiny! Pray and then prepare!

I had been praying about how to take my acting career to the next level and was looking for resources to guide me. However, I was unable to find someone from the business side of the entertainment industry to give me insight on how things really work in the industry. The Hollywood Commandments by DeVon Franklin did all of that and more.

The knowledge shared in this book can benefit anyone who has a desire to step into the fullness of who God created them to be. And something I really liked was that you don't have to be in the entertainment industry or in Hollywood to benefit from reading this book.

DeVon generously shares years of experience and insight like a coach/friend/mentor/big brother - and backs everything up with scripture. This book is encouraging, insightful and impactful - you won't regret reading it. I have been recommending this to all of my friends and pre-ordering copies one by one to send to my friends - as my budget allows. I'm going to read it again!

I love this book, I read it in a matter of a few days! I was in the process of signing a deal for my 1st book and this book helped me so much! Chapter 6: You get what you negotiate (Not what you're worth), this chapter taught me we have been lied to. We have always been told, we get what we are worth! We all know someone that was worth more and was paid far below value. After reading this book, I think totally different. We must negotiate for what we want and for what we believe we are worth. This can be tough for many of us because we often underbid our own worth! I absolutely recommend this book for everyone whether you are in Hollywood, have a business and even for those seeking a relationship. The Hollywood Commandments will not only change your life, it will change how you live your life.....

We Were Created To Give Praise, Not Receive It

I’m glad I read this book. THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS is an amazing book, in several ways. DeVon Franklin credits Hollywood with teaching him more about life and success than the church did! “In twenty years in the entertainment business, I’ve learned some of the most surprising and important lessons about God’s intention for our success. Those lessons have enabled me to build an amazing life and thriving career that glorifies God…”

DeVon’s ideas are credible because he has achieved great success in a field that seems hostile to the core beliefs of Christianity. How can this be? DeVon gives us the answer: The power of God is not somehow obstructed at the gates of Hollywood: “God’s Power Doesn’t Stop At The Gates Of Hollywood.”

The author is not so much concerned with helping people make a boatload of money, as he is in helping people use their talents: “What I care about is seeing you live out your God-given purpose in this life, walk in your calling, and unleash the full power of your gifts.”

THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS is NOT a how-to book, or recipe for getting rich; that is NOT the objective: “If your goal is to get the house of a lifetime, the car of your dreams, or more money than you know how to handle, this book is not for you!”

The book has tons of good career tips, which the author has summarized under 10 “Commandments:” I recommend reading the “Reader Guide” near the very end of the book FIRST. If you read that section first, it gives you a good overview of the main points of the book. Then, you will understand where the book is going. (Or, you might decide this book is not for you, and you won’t waste any more time.)

1. Your Prayers Alone Aren’t Enough
2. You Are the Talent
3. You Have to Carry a Crown Before You Can Wear One
4. You Have to Know the Rules to Play the Game
5. Your Gut Is Hiding God
6. You Get What You Negotiate (Not What You’re Worth)
7. You Must Master the Walk of Fame
8. Your Difference Is Your Destiny
9. Your Amnesia Is an Asset
10. Your World Is Smaller Than You Think

If you are a Christian believer, you will appreciate (and understand) many of the ideas, which are often tied to Biblical passages, both Old and New Testament. The general theme of the book is to use your God-given talents to the best extent possible. God has created you as an extraordinary person, who unique talents. Do get busy using those gifts! “God gifts us each with unique talents and calls us to use them to fulfill some part of His purpose.”

I thought one of the most useful chapters was Chapter 6. You Get What You Negotiate (Not What You’re Worth.) Here, the author explains the principles of negotiation. Remember, the company won’t pay you more than it has to: “We assume that the company will do right by us. But it doesn’t work like that. The company’s first interest is to do right by the company. . .If they can get you to settle for a dollar less than you ask for, they will.”

So all in all, I found THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS to be an inspiring, practical book. I found the life and business lessons to be sound. The book concludes with a sobering caution about chasing after wealth: “There is nothing in this world worth compromising your soul.”

DeVon reminds us that success in God’s eyes is not about getting a boatload of cash. It’s about serving. I thought this one passage summed up the book’s message:

“We were created because God wants us to serve a designated role in the world. That’s a thrilling idea: that you and I have been asked to play a role in the work of the Creator.”

“My goal with this book is to make it clear that by pursuing everything God has called you to pursue, and by doing everything He has called you to do in the world, you will not only achieve unprecedented secular success but will also strengthen your soul.” (p.238)

Devon Franklin certainly accomplished that with his latest book, The Hollywood Commandments. Franklin shows that you can be firm in your faith and spirituality and still enjoy worldly success. I had to take my time with this book to fully appreciate the lessons, and I must admit that this was the perfect book to help close out my 2017 as I evaluate my professional development and career thus far. Franklin's commandments aren’t what you’ll hear in the church, filled with personal experiences and ones from the Bible, Franklin reminds readers that we can glorify God and get the stellar career in any sector that we wish, once we’re armed with the right tools.

My favorite lesson? Your prayers alone aren’t enough.I think too many times we pray for the things that we want and just expect it to happen because we prayed for it. Nothing is ever given to us just because we want it to. We must work hard for it, and we have to prepare for the things that we want. Faith without works is dead, we must pray AND prepare. God helps those who help themselves.

Whether you consider yourself spiritual or not, The Hollywood Commandments is a great book to read to help you advance to next level in your career. Don’t just take my word for it, pick up a copy of this book and see for yourself.

The Hollywood Commandments book is phenomenal and insightful! This book inspired me to increase my faith in God and believe in myself to take it to another level in every area and aspect of my life…to walk boldly in my purpose and uniqueness. This book also inspired me stop ignoring my gut instinct and to kick my fears to the curb! I love the lessons of The Hebrew Boys. A few of my favorite quotes from the book:

“We find that success comes from being the distinctive person God created us to be.”
“Integrity equals peace and it also fuels something priceless and irreplaceable: your reputation.”
“Our purpose is the divine reason behind our creation.”
“Peace is a magnet for purpose and prosperity.”

Thank you so much DeVon Franklin!! It is an honor to be a part of The DeVon Franklin Book Launch Team. I ordered additional copies of this book to gift it to my some of my family members, friends, and coworkers so that they can be inspired and empowered as well. This book is absolutely a MUST read! It will bless your whole life.

"You will make it. I have faith in you. God has faith in you. Everything you're going through now has a purpose and is part of a journey God designed for you. As long as you remain true to who you are and make serving His purpose your real marker of success, you can't go wrong."

This book was an answer to prayer. As a follower of Jesus, as well as an actor passionate about the film industry, I grew up often looking at my fellow brothers and sister in Christ, wondering if I had chosen wrong. Why didn't I strongly desire to work in a church, or school, or as a missionary, or a nurse? There were certain fields that seemed to be deemed "good for Christians" while others were then just "secular". Up until the past 5 years of my life, I thought loving Christ and being a fantastic actor were in opposition of each other. I'm so glad that God spoke to my heart, but furthermore, I'm glad He did the same with DeVon Franklin.

Franklin writes with a passion for God, constantly points to Jesus, and emphasizes communion with the Holy Spirit. All the while, he gives PRACTICAL advice for those who follow God, and have roles in the secular workplace. At the end of the day, we're ALL in the world in some capacity. This book offers wisdom, experience and tools on how to navigate our careers in the way that honor God, and who He's created us to be.

I've been so encouraged by this book. I know it will be one I will re-read and glean more from each time. Though it truly applies to all aspects of the workplace (whatever industry you may find yourself in), I am so thankful Franklin speaks of his experiences in Hollywood. It encourages me to know that God has called other believers to this movie-making industry, and that I have the joy and responsibility of stepping in suit with my own calling.

I have been a fan and following DeVon for some time now and couldn't wait to check out his new book. DeVon has always been someone that I admire for the way he carries himself, holds firm to his faith and spiritual walk all the while succeeding in not just a secular profession but one that in most people's minds is the complete opposite of spiritual.

I was anxious to check out this book because it seemed to speak on that very point, spiritual vs secular.

As soon as I received the book I immediately got to reading it. Boy was I blown away from even just reading the introduction! Right from the start the DeVon drops wisdom and I knew I was about to be on a journey filled with knowledge, enlightenment, revelation and guidance.

I enjoyed the book so much that I took what I like to call the "wine approach" which means instead of just consuming the book at a normal pace, I took my time and sipped each chapter. I made sure to deliberately read each page at a pace where I could not only read its words but allow myself to absorb what DeVon was saying and time to reflect on it. I may have taken longer than most but felt that the pace was perfect because had I read at normal pace with highlighters, the book would've looked like a highlighter spilled on each and every page and I would have to go back over and over to fully grasp each bit of insight.

I highly recommend this amazing book that will equip you with how to navigate success in a secular field without losing your spirituality.

If you have not pre-ordered the book, not to worry, it releases to the masses tomorrow September 26th. But if you pre-order by 11:59PM today I know DeVon has some great added bonuses that you don't want to miss!

Wow! This book has me so much about my purpose in life. I know that writing is what I’m supposed to do . DeVon shows us that we can still live and love our dream as a Christian. He teaches us the tools to be bold, learn to say no and how to negotiate better in the workplace. For me, it has taught me to follow my dreams no matter what. Today, I’m doing just that.

A very eye-opening book. It encourages you to not limit your faith and gifts as a Christian to pray and serve in the church building. Although it's important we're called to do more.

This inspired guide to business success is long overdue. Christian books often focus exclusively on “spiritual vocations” without any mention of practical application to careers outside of church positions and especially high-profile careers. I have read business books that focus intensely on business success (e.g. closing deals, promotions) yet failed to include any ethical framework. DeVon Franklin has finally delivered the tome that seamlessly blends faith and your business future in his latest book, The Hollywood Commandments.

Franklin addresses key spiritual stereotypes about success, particularly in Chapter 6, “You Get What You Negotiate, Not What You’re Worth”. This critical chapter addresses the prevailing notion in churches that Christians should not make a lot of money or ask for more money. Not only could I relate to the feeling of being underpaid, I immediately noticed the errors in my spiritual and business thinking. Many times I felt I “deserved” a raise and prayed about it, but failed to follow through with salary research or presenting a compelling argument to Human Resources. Franklin details that praying for more money will likely not help you unless you also add some practical steps like research and strategy.

He answers the question we all have when our careers stall, "What am I doing wrong?" in 10 easy to read, interesting chapters.

Every chapter of the book is carefully outlined to allow readers to focus on one concept at a time. You don’t have to read this book in order. If you know that you’re struggling with “crazy ideas” go ahead and skip to Chapter 8, “Your Difference Is Your Destiny”. If you don’t like the idea of serving, immediately read Chapter 3, “You Have to Carry A Crown Before You Can Wear One.” Is ego your issue? Read Chapter 7, “You Must Master the Walk of Fame.” If you agonize over past mistakes or stay “high” on past success, please, please read Chapter 9, “Amnesia Is Your Asset”. Each chapter title clearly explains the concept and objectives.

Mr. Franklin freely admits his own career errors. He once thought that he had no particular talent, but now confidently describes his “talent” as a coach (Chapter 2, You Are the Talent). He certainly excels at explaining difficult concepts with tenderness, concern, and the authority of an expert. He is encouraging and shows definite action steps. The book is salted with vivid anecdotes from his personal life, insider knowledge of celebrities and life-long experience from his church that illustrate his most salient points about navigating your 9 to 5 straight to the top.

As a writer, Franklin has matured in leaps and bounds from his first book, “Produced By Faith.” His writing exudes a confidence and maturity from 20 years of entertainment industry work experience, leadership, life experience, and discipline. Yet he is not insensitive to the novice, who may find the title of Chapter 1, “Your Prayers Are Not Enough”, to be intimidating and even blasphemous. Franklin quickly and clearly explains his “faith PLUS action” message using famous Biblical examples of very financially successful God-fearing individuals such as Daniel, Shadrach, Joseph, Meshach, and Abednego.

My opinion is that most churches will be slow to catch on to his life-changing revelations. Career success is viewed by the general public and among Christians as “suspect”. In the church, driving an expensive car is scorned by the public and seen by some Christians as evidence of wrongdoing. Career success is viewed similarly. However, I will hold out hope that people will put aside old opinions and read the book before passing judgment. My experience has taught me that there are devout Christians who are very unhappy in their day jobs. This book will help them realize that they can be devout and “wildly successful” - Franklin's tagline for the book.

I would have liked to see a few more examples of extremely successful women from the Bible, especially since Mr. Franklin is a happily married man to actress Meagan Good. Women in the church continue to fill many service positions “automatically” without any clear understanding of the direction of their vocation or careers. Women will benefit from this book, as I did, if they commit to “doing” the work for their careers just as hard as they do in the church.

The Hollywood Commandments is for Christians who want to be successful (in the secular sense) and maintain a high Christian standard – essentially people who want to become modern-day versions of Abraham, Joseph, Daniel, or Esther. Wealthy, prominent, and apparently God-fearing. Anyone who is having difficulty in their careers will benefit from the wisdom and detailed advice designed to help us all overcome typical career obstructions like difficult bosses, feeling unappreciated/underpaid, or feeling untalented.

I recommend reading a chapter a week and watching the Facebook and Instagram videos Franklin created to further clarify his message. The Bible App also has a 5-day reading plan for this book if you have a busy schedule. The book and audiobook are currently available for purchase.

The Hollywood Commandments is not about telling you what to do or not to do. It’s like that sign at the amusement park that says “ride at your own risk”. In this case, “READ at your own risk” because once you do, your career will go higher than it’s ever gone before!

Full disclosure: I received a "proof" copy of this book as part of the DeVon Frankin Launch team. I was not compensated for this review.

Author: DeVon Franklin
Book title: The Hollywood Commandments: A Spiritual Guide To Secular Success
Reviewed by: Alexis A. Goring

"The Hollywood Commandments: A Spiritual Guide To Secular Success" as a book title is intriguing. Upon opening the book, the reader will see that the content is completely captivating and equipped with the power to not only help you succeed in your chosen career but to change your outlook on life for the better.

The author, DeVon Franklin, is more than a bestselling author sharing good words of wisdom with people who are thirsty for success. He is a Hollywood movie producer, CEO of Franklin Entertainment (his own, faith-based production company), spiritual success coach, and preacher.

His goal in writing this book was to show people that they are able to be successful—not just in Hollywood but in any career—without losing their faith. He argues that succeeding in the secular arena is a journey that can strengthen your faith if you permit it. He challenges the stereotype among church folk that Hollywood is a land of sin and shame, a place where no good Christian should go for if you do then you may gain the world but you’ll lose your soul. Franklin challenges those stereotypes and deep-rooted belief systems with this one idea and that is, “your faith was designed to thrive in the secular world, and, as a result, transform it.” He argues, “You may never experience the true fulfillment you were created for until you pursue the secular ambitions on your heart.”

Franklin encourages the reader to follow their dreams but to consult God first. He emphasizes the importance of staying in tune with God throughout the journey to your dreams because God knows you better than you know yourself. It is important to discern God’s will for your life and live out His plan and purpose whether that means going to Southern California and eventually getting your own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, or becoming the best you can be in a more traditional career. He emphasizes the point that this book is a guide to success in any career whether it’s in the spotlight or behind the scenes. He casts the net wide for his readership.

As a creative individual who always dreamed of a successful career in the Arts & Entertainment industry, this reader (me) was encouraged by valuable life lessons Franklin preached through his book. I say “preached” because reading this book in a sense was like going to church and listening to a really good sermon but without limitations.
Unfortunately, sometimes well-meaning ministers in church limit people who are “out of the box” or don’t fit in. If you are one of those people who feel limited or “different” then “Chapter 8: Your Difference Is Your Destiny”, might be the part of this book that resonates most with you. Franklin writes on page 174, “People don’t like what’s different, and sometimes they criticize or ridicule people who insist on being different. It can be lonely. But even in the loneliness, you have to trust God and let your distinctiveness stand out. The moment you begin to exchange what makes you different for what makes you ordinary because you want to fit in, you give away that which God wants to use to elevate you and take you to somewhere extraordinary.” If this were an audible sermon, Franklin could “drop the mic” at the end of that sentence because ultimately that’s his core message.

The words in this book paint a rich and vivid picture of how Franklin made it from his humble beginnings in Oakland (located in Northern California) to the seat of his destiny in Hollywood (located in Southern California). His life story is inspiring, the content of this book is encouraging and the message is meaningful. The readers will appreciate the clear roadmap he shares that shows in great detail, how to navigate the workplace so that you can be a success without losing your faith. His tone is kind yet firm. His style is solid, uplifting and motivational. The editing is flawless and the author’s heart for helping people while pointing them to God is beautiful.

It’s admirable how the author made it clear that he is not the person to tell you how to live your life. While he supports everything in this book with solid evidence and Scripture, he also constantly reminds the reader to get right with God and trust Him to reveal His purpose for your life. The reader can infer that the author knows that no matter how successful he is in this life and no matter how many words of wisdom he has to share from his own life experience, there is someone higher up the ladder than he and that someone is God. The author makes it clear that only God can guide you to your destiny. He knows that this book, while some may say was inspired by God, is not the most authoritative source on how to live your life. He makes it clear that God’s Word (The Holy Bible) is the best guide to your destiny and to succeed in life you must know the Bible and its Author (God, whose Holy Spirit inspired people to write it).

Kudos to the author for allowing his light as a follower of Jesus Christ to not only shine brightly in Hollywood, but through this book, impact the world. His transparent message will resonate with readers and encourage people to seek God’s plan and purpose for their life story.

It’s truly a beautiful message that deserves a five-star rating and a top place on your to-be-read book pile!

Franklin sees himself as a successful movie executive and with a bragging tone shares advice for Christians trying to make it in Hollywood or any workplace. Some of what he says is shockingly blunt within the Christian community and is something that people need to hear. But large portions of the book are trite and repetitive, mostly giving him a chance to brag about his life and setting up an almost impossible ideal for believers.

Every reader needs to decide how successful they think Franklin is. Certainly his position as an evangelical Christian within the movie studio community is unique. Add to that he is Seventh Day Adventist and insists on never working on Saturday. So he has had a special view of the movie world, but at the same time his uniqueness and his medium-level movie business success makes him think he is more qualified to write this book than he really is. He makes some odd choices along the way, claiming to merely hear the voice of God to quit a job, but never goes in depth regarding what happened in his job leading up to that decision. He talks about how studio executives support him, but he is a black man that is just one rejection away from filing a lawsuit and he doesn't discuss treatment of minorities at all in the book. So while he likes to hype himself as making the right choices and being an everyman, often his bragging seems out of place because he is so rare.

Some of the points he makes are outstanding and occur early in the book. He is blunt in saying how tough it is to get promoted in Hollywood, how much work you have to do, how you need to spend years serving others, etc. The section on service and defining different types of serving is outstanding. Bottom line is that it all revolves around his first "rule of the game" that every person is concerned about self-preservation and your job is really to make others look good instead of making yourself look good. Master that and you'll go places.

However, as the book goes on it gets repetitive and starts to wander into the "trust your gut" mentality. He pushes that theme over and over, yet fails to understand that 22-year-old film school graduates whose guts say to pick up everything and move to Hollywood even though they have no money may not really be hearing God at all. Because Franklin left all and moved there people reading this book will follow his lead, despite any words assuring them that most people fail in the movie business. He should have written that people should not trust their guts and that the modern young adult needs to spend a lot more time following the advice of objective mentors or just plain bloom where they are planted.

Too much of the book is cheerleading, encouraging readers to break rules or ask forgiveness instead of asking permission. This is ironic coming from a Seventh Day Adventist, about the biggest rule-following denomination in Christianity. He tries to make a connection between spirituality and the workplace, but often it fails. He notes that the church doesn't do a good job preparing people for the workplace, but in truth it may be that the same principles that guide people in their private lives may not always work at the job. I personally think it's selfish of him to constantly tell superiors that he will not work on Saturdays. If everyone tried to demand that their bosses allow them to do what their religion dictates the system would be chaos and little work would be done. It would show more integrity to work on Saturday and allow others to have time off--yet an Adventist will see the "Sabbath" day of rest as being the foundation of his faith therefore would never consider what he is doing to be selfish.

So while there is some great pointed advice that people can use, there is a lot that readers should be skeptical of. Too much praising Oprah (she's an odd role model since no one in the history of the world had an upbringing or work history like she did). Too much about George Lucas. Way too much about Franklin's own success or his wonderful actress wife. And almost nothing about the little people in Hollywood who struggle to make a living or made bad choices or were failures or who have regrets. Carefully read the book to take the pieces of advice that are practical but don't believe all of his hype and inspirational "coaching." Franklin's case is one in a million and to try to copy it may result in disappointment, discouragement, and a loss of faith.

THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS by Devon Franklin is, well, to put it simply:
AAAAAA-MAZING AND POWERFUL!!! I truly have not one single thing negative to say about this book, not even a tiny little something. This book has also have a Strong Impact upon my own life, personally. 21017 has been A VERY ROUGH YEAR for me and I've been feeling STUCK for a long time. Although I have watched countless videos from various social & spiritual mentors such as Joyce Meyers, Tony Gaskins Jr., Trent Shelton, Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk just to name a few) and their messages (videos) have struck a chord within me, it was this book that actually MOVED ME INTO ACTION AND STARTING REAL CHANGE!!! And what is so awesome about this book is that, contrary to some misconeption floating around out there, this book is NOT specific to ONLY the entertainment industry. This book and all of it's wisdom and expertise applies to ALL CAREERS -- ALL WALKS OF LIFE & ALL AGES FROM YOUNG ADULT TO...WELL, AS LONG AS YOU'RE STILL ALIVE AND WANTING TO MAKE CHANGE....LOL. I hope you PRE-ORDER this book, first and foremost becuase I 100% believe it WILL have a strong, positive impact upon your life...or I would not even promote it with my own name. Be Happy. Be Blessed. Be kind.
p.s. They would make AWESOME holiday gifts, birthday gifts and Just Because gifts =) =)

" God brings us insight, inspiration, strength, and relationships with people who can help us. But we have to put in the work and prepare so that when the harvest comes, we're ready."

Wow right?! In The Hollywood Commandments, Mr. DeVon does more than give us cheat codes. No, this book surpasses its duty to inspire. We are reminded of the coverage we receive when we are vigilant to God's strategy. Life is full of attempts to "make it." For those who are believers, this confirms of our prepared portions outside the prayer closest. For the weary still toiling in efforts, it comforts our natural haste and re-directs to the ultimate search engine (God) as navigation. Prayer is certainly the key but what unlocks anything is a person in action. This book hold your hand through every thought considered. God is so timely with His realeases of new things as Isaiah 43:19 decrees. (Isaiah 43:19- "Behold I do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall he not know it?" We have destinies to impact, generations to manifest, and good things to reap. There is no more time only hear of great works. This time it's in writing. This book is a new thing. This work is the sequel to a "God bless you." Perceive it.

Written in a conversational style, Mr. Franklin shares his secrets to success from the unique background of being a Seventh-day Adventist Christian AND a Hollywood producer. As an Adventist myself, I would never have thought such a thing was possible.

He's got some great career advice, particularly for Millennials, such as having to learn an industry thoroughly before being able to ascend the career ladder. For example, he maintains that "it is the pursuit of mastery, not its achievement, that is important." Other advice includes, "serve others and your needs will be met," "you will be rewarded based on how you help others meet their goals," and "the most successful people I know are the most generous with encouragement."

The book adds in how God and faith can guide your career and success. In fact, they are crucial to success. So Mr. Franklin has a unique perspective.

In the end I recommend this book for young professionals and even high schoolers (they might find the stories about Hollywood interesting). Many of Mr. Franklin's commandments are good reminders for older professionals, but many of them will have already been learned, even if it was the hard way.

The Hollywood Commandments is A Game Changer

After reading The Hollywood Commandments, I've never felt more alive. I understand my purpose, my mind is clear, and the fog has dissipated. I no longer doubt my intuition or my relationship with God. My faith is restored because the water was murky. Now the stream is clear and vivid.

The Hollywood Commandments will remain on my night-stand as a constant guide, just like my bible.

What you do now is the foundation, building your bridge for what yet is to manifest. Keep shaping and molding your life until you're prepared for the opportunity waiting. The knowledge from the book is a blessing. Devon dives deeply into life situations, teaching the How's, and the most valuable lesson in knowing "When To Say When"! Devon describes his struggles, obstacles and opportunities turned into blessings right before you.

This book reaches the soul. The words are worthy of your time; providing a lifetime of guidance, applicable to all situations, difficulties, and challenges.

DeVon Franklin is one of the most prolific speakers and writers (and Hollywood executives) of our time. I've read all of his books and this one continues in the vein of him allowing God to use Hollywood anecdotes to bring to life God's word.

I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but I will say my favorite chapter is Chapter 5 "Your Gut Is Hiding God". I think it speaks to one of the most talked about subjects that Christians seem to struggle with "How do I hear from God?"

I love how each chapter defines something important to think about as it pertains to your career and keeping Christ at the center of your career goals. So often, people think that God isn't in secular careers or careers that pertains to the arts, but God is wherever you are when you're a King's kid.

This is an awesome book. Devon Franklin is a mighty man of God and wrote this book to help everyone in their professional careers. As a Christian, I have wondered how to be successful in a secular world. This book helped me by giving me the courage to pursue my talents and think outside the box. Devon gives biblical examples and uses simplicity for clear understanding. He quotes the bible but also makes his examples very relatable to everyday life. I also like how he uses his own career and shares how he climbed the stairs to success. The Hollywood Commandments: A Spiritual Guide to Secular Success

This was good. There were so many tangible pieces to the “commandments”. While I can’t say there was a eureka / I didn’t know that moment, but it was soooooo nice to hear practical business advice from a Christian perspective . . . And someone familiar with the Adventist Christian perspective.

I loved the references to Christians who have no experience in your world who encourage young people (anyone) to not be ambitious and to just be happy with a job. Really? Where’s the faith in that? Love it!

I’ve already recommended this to at least one friend and am getting ready to share it with another in a few.

Oh, and definitely check out “sequelitis”. I was just talking about this trend at work last week! Let’s stop it. I could go on . . .

Gratefully, his wisdom, talks and books are here to guide us today. No matter where you are in your life and in your career, Devon’s wisdom will comfort, guide and inspire you to reach your dreams while strengthening your faith and stepping into your divine destiny. This was pretty interesting read, and some parts were self-explanatory and other parts to understand his progress to get to this current status. In so many words, the church could not be as supportive as you may need to unleash your talents/skills to the world, and we cannot always just wait without participate. The church can also criticize your success as if it is a curse in so many words, but trust the Lord you serve and He would not steer you wrong.

Disclaimer: I borrowed the audiobook read and listened via phone or speaker at home, and giving my honest review on it.
3.25 stars, I liked it but didn't necessarily love it.

This book showed up at my door one day. I don’t remember ordering it and there were no messages to tell me where it came from. Honestly I wasn’t too sure about the religious perspective of the book but was pleasantly surprised by the usefulness of the content and that it wasn’t one of those books that pushes religion down your throat. There were many points and words of advise I needed to hear right now as I’m going through a transition in career path. It was a worthwhile read for me and at the very time in my life when it would be useful and appreciated.
Thank you to the sender and the author.

This book came at a critical time for me. If you are trying to figure out your next steps, or just need to get unstuck - you need this in your life. The section on "Fight Your Fear" spoke directly to me and has strengthened my resolve to follow my gut. From learning how to recognize your worth to dealing with difficult principles, this book is not just for people in Hollywood. It's how to become successful in any field in a way that will reflect your love for God and commitment to pursuing your purpose.

This was a really good read for millennials. I think that he offered a lot of great insight about challenges and encouragement for the work journey. This is a book that I would purchase for a young mentee to help guide them through choosing their career.
My only issue with the book is that I would have hoped that Devon would have added more scriptural stories that demonstrated the various commandments. I found myself writing notes in margins about stories that I knew connected. But if I was a new believer, this was a great start!

I thought the book was very good and gave some very inspiring views on how to achieve success. He breaks down to commandments in a way that's personal to both himself and the reader. One of the biggest lesson I got from the book is that faith is like a superpower, once you learn to harness the power, you can conquer anything you God has planned for you. The other biggest lesson is living to glorify God not our own selves. A lot of gems and not enough time to write them all. Nice job to DeVon for sharing these amazing commandments.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was easy to read yet provided much to consider and implement to one's personal life and profession.

In this guide, Devon Franklin imparts the mindsets, behaviors and actions that led to his success in the entertainment industry. Really, the nuggets of wisdom provided are applicable to any working professional in any industry.

Those not familiar with Franklin should know he is a man of faith and his perspective reflects that. Nevertheless, this read is worthwhile for all who enjoy self-help books.
