Some magic should be forbidden.

Reunited safely in Panar, Miara, Aven, and their friends have conquered more obstacles than they thought possible. The Akarian Assembly has accepted Aven and his magic--and Miara as his queen. But the problems for Akaria and its freemages are only beginning. One ally has vanished. Another teeters on the edge of death. And a third will face a choice between duty and love.

Meanwhile, the Dark Master has marshalled the combined power of Mage Hall and Kavanar's army. He's closer than ever before to his goals: destroy the star mage and his magic, recapture those who've escaped, and seize all of Akaria for himself.

With the true, terrible potential of magic unleashed, no one can predict what destruction will be wrought. The struggle for the freedom of mage slaves culminates in all-out war in this third and final volume of the Enslaved Chronicles.

Many threads neatly tied

This fantasy series ends with epic battles, death and destruction. By the third installment, start with Mage Slave, the reader is following a complicated story via the POV from roughly seven characters. Does it work? At times.

The main characters from book one, Miara and Aven, have ascended in responsibility. Unfortunately, the romance reader in me was disappointed as they spend a considerable part of the book apart, their duties and circumstances overwhelm, and the love stories for other characters (THREE couples!) distract. Miara and Aven are no longer the romantic heart. The baton was passed. I didn't like it, even though the other couples were engrossing in their own ways.

More magical developments keep the personal and epic battles fascinating. The unlearned mages barely hold their own, and the villains are surprisingly devious and competent for an older young adult fantasy novel. The author excels at letting you inside the heads of the schemers, the fighters. the protectors, and the master manipilators, yet leaving just enough in the dark to create highly dramatic tension. I was never sure where the story would go despite the heavy handed internal monologues.

3.5 rounded to 4 stars. High marks for imagination, elaborately drawn characters and dramatic flair. Low marks for losing the main characters' romance thread and digressing into too much strategic planning at times. Show me, don't tell me. Overall, an exciting series and I will certainly look for more from this author.

Star Mage is the third and final book in the high fantasy trilogy The Enslaved Chronicles.
I've been thinking long and hard about why this book didn't work for me. By all accounts it should have. It's magic, it's war, it's lots of politics and romance on top of that. I've come to the conclusion the problem is this book wants to be more than it is.
The series started out quite intimate with two main POV characters and the bad guy occasionally thrown in for good measure. The second book added more POV characters and it was already starting to become annoying and now the third book … another two POV characters! This book had seven POV characters! And I can make a decent argument that this book would have worked just fine if not a lot better if you had four of them completely. Not only would it have been shorter, the narrative would have been clearer and the pacing better. The plotting just didn't make that many different POVs necessary. They didn't all have different goals and motives that were in opposition to each other. There were mostly all on the same side, fighting for the same goal. And the plot wasn't so convoluted or complicated that we needed to know what was happening in different places. Jaena, Ro, Aven and Miara were in the same place, being friends, talking to each other for almost 70% of the book! We didn't need all four of them to have their own POV chapters. Aven and Miara would have been entirely sufficient and at least I care somewhat about their relationship. In all honesty, Jaena and Ro seemed like nothing but a fluff piece because the author had written herself out of being able to let Aven and Miara make out in book two. Everythingelse they did was mostly useless, could have been done by other characters or it would have been enough for us to hear about it through other characters. And the same goes for Thel and Niat. Honestly, I challenge you to read this book and skip all the POV chapters except for Aven's, Miara's and Dae's (though I'd argue even his are unnecessary). I'm betting you, you still understand the plot without any problems and the book would probably only be half as long.
But that's not all. There are seven POV characters … or three hetero couples and sometimes the bad guy. Worse! The couples are almost interchangeable. Of course, they have different names and they aren't all kings and queens, but their relationships were almost the same, their power structure was far too similar. The girl was generally speaking the distrusting one who had a shitty childhood and had to learn to take care of herself while the guy generally speaking had a decent or even nice childhood. He comes from money and or some kind of power. He is self assured and far more willing to express his feelings. That's the case for all three couples!!!!
The only thing that actually interested me in terms of struggles was the question if Aven should and would use the star map magic or not. The question of power is an interesting and ever relevant one. Does power itself corrupt? Can you choose not to use a weapon at you disposal? Especially if using it would mean betraying everything you believe in and not using it will mean almost certain death for everyone or slavery. But this interesting theme got completely lost between the unnecessary relationship crap of characters I didn't care about in the least and that wasn't plot relevant whatsoever. Also, that interesting theme wasn't even really dealt with!
In short, I was deeply bored for the first 70% of the book then I thought it would getter for about twenty pages, then I was bored again and in the end I was just annoyed and wondered why I wasted so much time reading a book that leaves so many story threads unresolved that she forced me to live through unnecessarily.

First I would like to say that I loved this series. R.K Thorne has a gift for suspenseful moments that make you not want to put the book down.
This volume picks up right after book 2 and shows what happens next in the war which has an army of mages fighting non magic users. We see all the different characters from the first 2 books interact with each other and their arguments about what to do next. There is betrayal and things you don't see coming, nothing here is perfectly right or wrong. This includes Miara and Aven's relationship which hits some highs and lows and test them like nothing else has because their problems are with their own choices and not just external forces.
We also see Jaena and Ro along with a new couple of characters as we follow the different plots. One of the best parts of this story is how all the characters have a part to play. There is not one person who is more important and in the end we see them all have resolution but I can also see continuing some of their stories.
Pros: you care about the characters and what happens to them, the romantic moments, tons of action, the ending is satisfying
Cons: the first quarter of the book is a bit heavy on politics and drags a bit but after that it's go go go, i want more!
If you enjoyed an Ember in the Ashes i recommend this story, start with Mage Slave you won't be disappointed.
Contains:romance, action, multiple POVs, magic, war, fantasy

A perfect ending to a story born of slaves with the magic to save or destroy the luscious captivating world that R.K. Thorne takes us to. This is the third book in the Enslaved Chronicles trilogy. If you have not read the first two books get on it your missing out. You will need to read those first. I love the fact that this story is packed with action and mystery. Never a dull moment in this story people. Aven and Miara must decide if the magic they both possess with the help of the friends they have acquired on this journey is enough to save the kingdom he has inherited and the world of slaves she comes from.
A world filled with the magic of mages controlling not only the elements, creatures of the forest, nature and the human mind itself, but the very world they live in. The only problem is the Dark Masters who have enslaved those with this power and use them to wield it at those who would oppose their corruption and slavery. Could you imagine your mind not being your own? Everyday of your life being controlled. The choice to choose and your free will have been taken away. You are aware of everything you are doing but unable to stop yourself.
Are Aven and Miara strong enough to oppose this force together? War is coming! Will it rip the very world they are trying to bring together apart leaving them both dead or left in a world that would enslave them both? Well you will have to find out for yourself by reading this book. You will not be sorry.

I really enjoyed the series, fast paced, full of magic, romance and suspense. Star Mage wraps up the series neatly, there were no loose ends, and I enjoyed the ending. I love seeing the characters development, the story was fast paced and had me longing to see how the characters would make it through. I do have one concern though, and I know I'm probably in the minority. I prefer clean reads, the first two didn't make me uncomfortable, in fact I loved that the main characters were waiting for marriage. However, this last one, had many more innuendoes and scenes (though not really graphic just letting you know what's happening), that didn't really add anything to the story and even some references to rape, I personally wouldn't want my teenager to read it. It was also pretty violent and somewhat dark in spots. Still an enjoyable read, but maybe for more mature audiences.

I loved all three books in the series and hate to see the story end. I'm hoping there will be a sequel. Please?

I felt the final book wrapped things up nicely and I enjoyed reading it. I particularly liked Miara's arch. I was starting to get a little disappointed as she seemed to have faded a bit into the background as the main character but she had a great comeback after her escape and her scene with the Tall Master.

One thing that did disappoint me was Daes' fate though. I felt Aven should have just killed him like Miara did with the Tall Master. I guess some people may like the "eye for an eye" approach better but I felt like Aven is suppose to be a leader on a higher moral ground. So enslaving Daes just puts him on the same level. He was rather quickly forgiven for it too, even though everyone around him was against him using exactly that kind of magic. I also felt his final encounter with Daes was a little too easy. Like really? They aren't going to search him for weapons, or put a devoted rock on him or anything? I mean all that trouble to put Miara in a magic blocking rock cell and for him they just assume he'll be a good little king and come along nicely?

Also, as with the 2nd book, I felt the romance was a little too much. Jaena and Ro's viewpoint was basically 95% them mooning over each other the whole time. It's sweet but gets pretty tiring to read (I think I actually just skimmed a lot of their paragraphs). It's a shame as Jaena's arch was really interesting at the start of book 2 but I quickly lost interest in it as it became just her obsessing over Ro and Ro obsessing over her. I wanted to know more about his order and his history and why they didn't tell him why he was a mage but it seems the door to that was just shut off with a simple "they are all liars" explanation. I think the only part of her arch I liked in this book was when she visited the temple and thought through why things were the way they were and if she deserved to be happy after Dekana's death. It was a nice "closure" chapter without any of the "I wanna bang you" vibe that their chapters always seem to give off.

I did like Thel and Niat's story though. It was a nice gradual build up to their relationship, although predictable and kind of cheesy at times. It was still fun to read, though now that I think about it, their entire arch probably could have been removed and not much would change in the main storyline as they didn't do much to contribute to the actual war (except for a bit at the end). Niat's history was interesting though I do wonder why her abilities as a seer are accepted by the temples but not normal mages? Magic is magic isn't it?

The amount of POVs in this last book were a little too much. It made the story longer, but also a little more boring. There were characters that I just didn't connect with and that made their sections torture to read. The changing of POVs seemed a convenient way of story telling so that the main characters didn't have to do the hard work. I would rather have seen this stay between Aven and Miara with small sections granted to other important parts. Such as Kae and the book; Daes and the smaller stones for a prison; or smaller snippets of the research on the star map. It would have helped the book flow better and keep the readers attention on the important parts.

The ending to this doesn't seem to fit the story. It wasn't what I thought would happen. In the end, it was a disappointment. Two story lines were left feeling unfinished. The war and the brand. I know what I expected at the end for the war, but the brand left me scratching my head. If it was that easy, why hadn't they done that sooner?

This whole story was just okay through the three books. It will never be up there with some of the great fantasy books out there and the last book tried so hard to get up there but fell short. Really short.

This book was so well written — just as the entire series was. I was fully invested in the characters and I loved how, as the story grew, so did the characters . . . as well as the cast of characters . . . as well as the world in which they lived, grew, struggled, fought, and sometimes died. Miara and Aven drew me into their story in book one and the intensity surrounding them never lessened on any level. In addition, as other characters were introduced, the world and their struggles, as well as the growth of all of the characters grew exponentially. I will definitely be looking to read anything that RK Thorne produces and hope to perhaps hear more of Miara, Aven, Ro, Jaena, Thel, Niat, Kae and the others. Highly recommended.

I haven’t written a review before but I had to warn you all how utterly dull this book is (at 4am cause I just want this book to be done already!) I haven’t even finished it yet, I’m around the 75% mark but I came on looking for spoilers cause I don’t even want to finish this book. Which is really disappointing cause I rather enjoyed the other two books in the series. I’m not really a fan of changing POV’s but I’ll tolerate maybe 3. This book has like 7 POV changes that jump around all over the place with useless crap half the time, really disrupts the flow and story telling in the book (and my attention span). I feel like this book either wasn’t thought out, the author used up all their ideas or just wanted to be done with the series?

I have been rooting for Aven and Miara ever since I read Mage Slave and the way their relationship shapes up in this book has been one of my high points in the book. I loved the way the book shaped up and the circumstances leading to the end.

The politics and the romance mixed with magic makes the book such an interesting read. The development of the minor characters and the end was like a neatly wrapped Christmas gift for me. I particularly loved reading about Thel and Niat and the side stories of Jaena and Ro. This book has proved to be a surprise yet again.

Must read if you like all things magic with a dash of romance and history.

I finally finished the book... It took a while.

What I like:
+ I like the tension build up that leading to the war. There's some action here and there, some betrayal here and there too. It was entertaining.

What I don't like:
- While I enjoy reading the book, I often getting too distracted by all the different POV. Feels like I jump a lot from one character to the other, yet the story barely moving.
- I feel so little connection with Niat. I just feels annoyed whenever he part comes up.
- The ending feels so abrupt. Just a snap and then it's over... Kinda eh... I wish I got a little glimpse about what happend after the war.

Awesome Ending

Ok, the title "Star Mage" makes it sound like Aven is the star of the show.. but no, its definitely all about girl power. Miara was definitely the star of this book, followed by Jaena. It was nice to read about strong women taking charge. I still loved the men of this book too.. I enjoyed reading about the love blossoming between Ro and Jaena, Thel and Niat. Reading about them felt like reading mini stories that intertwined with Aven and Miara's story. Seriously glad I came back to these books.

Great

I really enjoyed the books but think our heros had at least one too many setbacks. They fought hard enough without Miara having to be kidnapped the final time and encased in the geode. I found myself fast forwarding thru sections after that. That being said, I remained hooked until the end. Would certainly recommend buying it and will keep a lookout for R.K. Thorne in the future.

Don't bother

This series started well with the first book being a good read and an interesting idea . However over the course of the last two books the story and the characters went down hill. What started as a new fresh take on fantasy with interesting ideas on mages and their magic became nothing more than a really bad romance novel. Would not recommend it read anything from this author again.

I'm sorry to say but I gave up. Less than half through this one I skipped to the last chapter. By this time the characters and their behavior really annoyed the hell out of me. It just didn't#t make any sense anymore and on some pages I just wanted to scream at them to behave like grown ups and do what needed to be done to finish this whole conflict.

I really liked the start of the story. It seems so full of promise. I'm disappointed how it all turned out.

Some parts were good

Some parts of this book were good, but a bit of it dragged. The beginning was so slow and hard to get into. The middle was a little better, but the end started dragging again. The bits before the ending also confused me. It felt like the plot started to not make sense. It didn’t help that there were errors that made it a little confusing (such as character viewpoint shifts that weren’t clearly marked).

Soft landing for a great series.

There is absolutely nothing I found objectionable in these books. A better editor would have caught the minor word choice errors, and perhaps tightened some sections. Overall the entire series is very fine. There are several excellent characters that I would like to see again.

Riveting.

I so thoroughly enjoyed this series, each book with escalating suspense and thrills. Miara and Aven certainly an unlikely heroine and hero; two of a cast of believable and interesting characters. Thrilling stories filled with tragedy, triumph and magic-a mage trifecta. Thorne fine work and an excellent read which I finished over a weekend.

Must read fantasy series

This is a great fantasy series. It incorporates all of the genres, fantasy, thriller, romance, (spoiler alert) all with a happy ended...in the end, but you have to get to the end. I loved the writing style and the plot. Always fun when the good guys win in the end any and the general public/common people end up better off.

I love a bit of escapism and this fitted the bill for me. All three books kept me entertained, although the middle one was a little more thoughtful than the others. Lots of action, wars, magic and clean romance. HEA (amazing considering the amount of destruction going on!) and all the ends nicely tied-up! A new author for me - one I may consider again if something catches my eye.

A truly epic fantasy!

This series has it all! Magic, war, love, and intrigue abound in the third book of the trilogy. Moses and Aven have to work separately and together to defeat the evil mages controlling the slave mages while their cities are under attack. Don't miss these stories!

Book 3

Book 3 had errors throughout and was a fun read. The plot and characters development well and was predictable. The characters seemed to repeat a lot of information through this book and it became distracting from the rest of the story. Some parts dragged on and the self loathing parts was annoying to read.

It characters you want to see prevail, some you love to hare and others who are intriguing mysteries. Although at times it may gave been a bit predictable the tensions between the characters with distinct voices made it an entirely enjoyable read.

Great Fantasy Trilogy of magic and love

Well written, fast paced trilogy about a slave forced to kidnap a prince, falling in love and fighting a war. Much better written and edited than the typical books available in Kindle Unlimited

Fantasy, magic, romance, it is all here!

It was hard to put this book down. It was quick moving, unexpected and funny in places. The character development was fun and the magic was fun, even with the evil that was overcome with good.

kingly story

My favourite part of these books was the way they dealt with the consequences of responsibilities of power and royalty.
Characters were excellent.
The Romance was a bit overly sappy, but I can forgive that. This is one of my favourite series now.
