I loved most of this book.

I loved the characters, especially Lily Taylor. Seeing her grow from a bookish, cautious girl into a determined woman who fights aliens with her brain was incredibly satisfying to read. I also loved the blend of sci-fi and horror this book shares with Motherhood, the first in the series. Yet Livelihood was a departure from the internal, psychological struggle of Motherhood and dealt more heavily with external conflict. A reader wanting more of the introspection of Motherhood might be disappointed, but I enjoyed the different vibe.

This would be a five star book if it wasn't for the ending. It felt like the story just stopped, and the events at the end seemed kind of random. However, the fact that there is going to be a third in the series keeps me from being too annoyed about the ending, since there will be more to the overall story. I'm eager to see where it goes, and look forward to reading the next one.
