Witch's Bite #3

Blood Magic

Rate this book
I'm stuck with Reilly and stuck figuring out how to control my newfound power, which is starting to feel more like a curse.

I never expected to be working with JHAPI.

I'm still not sure I can trust them, particularly Zachary's longtime friend who won't stop glaring at me. And I'm not sure that Zachary Brunson has forgiven me at all.

To make matters worse, I can't get rid of the welts on my arms, and I'm starting to see things I shouldn't.

All I want is to find and kill Martinez, and get away from Reilly, but that's proving to be easier said than done. Especially while discovering that the NWR always has another bloody trick up their sleeve.

Weak

The main character is weak. The romance is also horrible. Why can’t a book be written with a strong female lead and no romantic interest. What makes this book even worse is the fact that she is falling for a guy that she has zero chemistry with. The magic was the only interesting thing in the book. It’s simplistic but the writer makes it alright.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, despite their need of extensive editing and proofreading. That aside, the story was so good, I just didn’t care about the tense shifts or wonky sentence structure or any of the other problems. The heroine was spunky, the story was engaging, and there was real chemistry between Olivia and Reilly. All things that make me a happy girl. I gave each book five stars, stuck them on my favorites shelf, and waited, impatiently, for the next installment.

Then it came. It, too, suffered from an all too obvious lack of editing. Except this time the story was flat, the plot was slow moving, and Olivia had gone from the spunky heroine I’d loved to a one dimensional, whiny child just coasting through life. And don’t get me started on Reilly. He was bad enough in the first couple of books, but in this one he’s an insufferable douche nozzle.

The countless number of new characters lack any sort of development. I couldn’t even keep track of who they were and I didn’t really care. I was hoping they’d all die in some gruesome way just to give the book some pizzazz.

I trudged through and the more I read, the worse it became. I was so frustrated by this one that it made me remove the other two from my favorites shelf and knock two stars off each of them. Things do get better towards the end of the book, but by that time I was past caring.

I’m not giving up on this series completely, but I hope the next installment returns to the things I loved so much about the first two.

Ok - I hesitated between 2-3-4 stars. I’ve settled on 3 stars.
This was good, though not as strong as the first 2. Olivia seems to be going backwards in maturity as her magic increases. I’m not sure if this is done intentionally by the author or not. I’m still enjoying the storyline and the twists and turns as we navigate this theory/prophecy or whatever (I’m still getting my head around that one). I’m hoping Olivia comes into her own in Book 4. Reilly road a bit of a back seat in this book and Zachary seems t be stepping forward. I’m not sure how it feel about either of these guys yet.
Overall, lots of loose ends but the writing is good and the story has flow, so it’s effortless reading.

Unexpected ending

This book had what felt like an ending and then surprised me with more to read, which was delightful. Olivia is becoming stronger and more secure with herself. She's kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place in this book. The last scene with Martinez was satisfying.

A hodgepodge of magic or God killer?

Terrific. She has been forced to aid the vampire's representative in the special task force that has been set up to catch the rogue officer who has been working to kill paranormal. No-one from her recent past has stepped up to the plate to help her. Now she has even more magic that she needs to learn to control. Maybe Vegas will have the answers as vampires and weres have gone missing. Add in a Sire who is bent on world domination, a showdown with the rogue officer, learning more about her powers, making peace with her "brother", seeing her mother's ghost, curses and explosions follow her as she battles to learn why everyone wants to use her and the forthcoming return of the Bound God. Another great plot that has plenty of action, explosions and gore - but written in such a way that you don't automatically go "yuck" if like me you hate horror or too much blood and guts. Can't wait for the next book.

My Thoughts:
Another short and sweet installment in the Witch's Bite series with 269 pages long. This one I read the ebook instead of listening to it, even though I already own the audiobook version. Teaches me not to buy books ahead of time instead of buying them only when I need to. Really not a fan of the narrator's singsong way of reading!

I've said most of what I have to say about this book in my review of the previous books in this series. Wonderful story telling quality. Beautiful world building. Characters to love, etc. etc. This one is more of the same. Like I said, short and sweet!

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 4.5
Writing Style = 5
Ending = 4
World building = 5
Cover art = 5
Pace = 5
Plot = 3
Narration = N/A

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

Ugh. What happened to the BA heroine?

Olivia spends this whole book being unnecessarily petulant to everyone. She stomps her foot to get her way and if anyone talks to her, she rolls her eyes. I rarely reread books, but I read the first two of this series multiple times because the heroine was well put together, tough, and smart. She isn’t in this book. At all. I almost gave up at 41% because her behavior was immature and frustrating.

I hope it gets better in the next book, but if not, I won’t be continuing with this series.

Since I purchased the Witch's Bite Boxed set on Audible, I am going through this series without really stopping. Then, as I was listening and realized that I had gotten to the last book in the package, I thought I probably should take a quick break and jot down a few words.

Honestly, this series has grown on me. Since I am basically reading the entire series during a single sitting, I think it might actually be better for me because I do not have any books that get in the way or in between before moving on to the next installment.

Before I started the series, I read several reviews that totally criticized the narrator. I really didn't have any problems with her. She DID sound familiar so I looked her up to find out what it was that I had listened to her with and I think it is the Lindsay Hall series. I can't remember the name of the series off top of my head, but it was the one about the fated mates where the alpha rejected her (I think the female MC is a wolf but couldn't shift). Anyway, since I had already listened to a series with her, I think that made it a heck of a lot easier listening to this one. Granted, her speech is a little short and stilted, but you really do get used to it.

Back to this series. Without going into spoilers, things are beginning to come together...finally. Unfortunately (at least for me) this is a VERY slow burn in terms of the romance part of it. Actually, I would say that the romance is pretty much non existent, just a whole lot of UST. It hasn't bothered me too much yet because, honestly, Riley has had some pretty crappy moves and started this whole thing by threatening and manipulating our female MC Olivia. And since it was obvious that he knew what he was doing and didn't seem to have any remorse about it - that was a pretty d**K move. But, we FINALLY get to see something.

We also get a look behind the curtains with the vampires and FINALLY find out what the supposed "plan" is - why the need to manipulate Olivia was there in the first place - and we get to met Riley's sire *he's creepy*. And, we also learn even more from another source of Olivia's. Interesting, interesting.......

I like the world building in this series. I like the introduction of the secondary characters and now we have an idea of what the end game, all of this makes it fun as well. The pieces are finally starting to make sense.

Onward to the last book...

2.5 stars, decent read, I like the concept and plot a lot, the overall story is interesting. I just don't like the characters. I feel as if they've become progressively less and less interesting as the books have continued. If I could rate this book simply on the world building and magic, then it would be 4/5
howoever everything else is like 1 star
Its completely changed from the first 2 book, the stakes are higher, the story more grand but it doesn't feel grounded and the MC's logic makes no sense. She acts irrationally sometimes and could really learn some tact which I feel would make her life a lot easier. Her maturity level seems to regress with each new power she takes. Its frustrating.
Secondary characters have more personality than our MC here and they seemed cool.
I don't like Reilly also, he's a weak LI, and just broody, zero chemistry between them except they wanna smash each other bad.
may read the final book for the sake of completeness, may just not bother

I had a good time with this one. Better than the second book for me. I don't normally like learning almost a whole new cast mid series, but the characters that did carry over bought the time I needed to get on board. It helped that this one moved the fastest and had the most epic ending. I love our new male lead as a character, he's so great! I appreciate that he's not a bad boy with a heart of gold like I half expected him to be. He's just bad but not as bad as they come. It makes him feel so much more real and interesting. I'm still trying to figure him out. I enjoy the back and forth I experience about hating him as a potential love interest for her and rooting for them. I think I more often lean toward hate, but im glad it doesnt feel like the author is pushing me one way or another, its just a story being told as it is. And lastly I'll always love our main girl Olivia with all my heart.

Olivia is caught in the middle

This book has enough action in it for two. It was great, can't wait for book 4. The NWR wants rid of her, as in dead, the coven her mother stole the book from has a bounty on her, the JHAPI team she's working with is divided on whether they hate her or not, and the vampire that blackmailed her into working with him is upping the stakes. Oh, and the former cop that wanted her, still does and it's trying to either capture or kill her. And he's crazy enough that he's not sure which at any given moment. And now she has to go to the annual paranormal Summit and meet Reilly's Sire, who's one scary dude. And that doesn't even begin to describe the operations she goes soon, the interactions with all these people and oh, yeah, that magic she needs to get under control. Good times.

more like 2.9 stars (but rounded up bc its so close to 3)!

this series is v straightforward and fast and though i wish somethings were laid out for longer so that the reader can absorb it better, one thing i appreciate is its no nonsense attitude and it goes straight to the point!

still a fun continuation in the series-- though i like reilly and olivia, for some reason i'm not completely sold on them yet... but they still make for a fun read (even though reilly can be a bit of a manipulative ass at times)

i like how olivia grows in power but im starting to worry if it will teeter into special snowflake territory..... hope not

So far, I really haven't seen a lot of character growth in Olivia. This book she tended to show her hot headed side more than anything else... and also her petulant side. There are a lot of editorial issues in this book, that can get frustrating --- Peeked, instead of peeked for example --- but that can be overlooked in the interest of a good story. This one definitely had elements of the good story, but they were kind of lost in frustration at both Olivia and Reilly's behaviors. She was being childish, and he was just a complete ass.

I'm hoping that the next book shows some real character growth in both of them. A good story can only take you so far.

Great series

If you are reading this, you probably actually want to go back to the first book and start there. This is an excellent series, but really needs to be read in order.

The protagonist is smart, strong, not at all naive, but still committed to doing the right thing.

The love interest is complex, sexy, and... Nothing else I can talk about if I want to avoid spoilers.

Good Workshopring, interesting characters, and action that never stops. It's a great series.

But don't start it with this book. Go back to the beginning ;)

A good book with room for potential.

This series is really a great read and I can't wait for the next release. My only problem with this book was the errors made throughout the book. There was alot of mistakes made in word usage. Some thorough editing is definitely needed. However, this book is still an enjoyable read despite the errors. I would definitely recommend this book for those who love urban fantasy.

Loved it!

So there are some reviews that are saying how immature Olivia acts in this but I really don't see it. I see a girl who has been betrayed or used her whole life and still goes out of her way to save those who use her or don't trust her. Keeping secrets from her and using her for their interests and then yelling at her to grow up, isn't immature. The overall storyline advances well, we get some answers and I can't wait for the next book!

Engaging story!👍👍

Great series! Full of well-developed characters you want to read about in other sequels. Twists and turns paranormal urban mystery. Not your usual elementary school 'cozy ' writing. The author has potential, as long as she maintains standards of proofreading and editing. Fun💏😁🎃👻 I will definitely read any books she writes. Funny strong female characters and the men are not just accessories!👌👌👌👍

Good.

The best kinds of fantasy novels have a slow build up to face down the ‘bad guys’... Stephanie Foxe has definitely managed it in blood magic!
From the beginning, our heroine has been working against the odds. In this book she learns more about her abilities, faces off with one enemy (a few times), and meets a new one.
Not a standalone novel, this book builds on the two before it, and is building up for the next book in the series.
A very good urban fantasy.

I feel like Reilly's character from being that playful new male lead has turned into a badass in this one. We don't see much of his playfulness in this one. The romantic build between Reilly and Olivia was awkward. It didn't feel like they were into each other if it weren't for the author's will. Not to mention Olivia was mostly stumbling her way through everything even though she's supposed to be kick ass.

The books are getting better and better

The books are just getting better. I am really enjoying this series. It has state interesting throughout, and we're getting to know the characters really well. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Told from h POV. I really like Reilly. His boss is a psycho though. Summary covers basics. Ongoing arc and series needs to be read in order.

Awesome read....

I've done nothing for days reading this series from the first one I was hooked. The story is interesting with just enough mystery to get you all excited and just enough answers to keep you not going crazy. A nice balance of villains and heroes. Will be reading the books to come.

This book gets really exciting with a climactic battle at the end. I don't want to spoil too much so I'll just say, the tram finds out her secret, she finds out a secret of Reilly's and a mystery gets solved. So even tho 2 big things get resolved in this one a whole host pf new things get opened up which is pretty great and Im excited to see what the book has in store next

By far the best so far

Olivia still needs a break and perhaps some love action. However, this was the best in this series so far. It flowed and had better character development as well as a good story. Top work Ms Foxe. I will be buying the next and probably leaving the review for that on Monday.

Olivia is a horrible character. Awful. Literally has tantrums like a kid, runs out of a room if confronted with her mistakes, gets pissed whenever she gets called on her awful behavior. I don't know how the author doesn't realize how terrible she is. I'm going to finish, because I love Reiley. I don't think Olivia deserves him at all and at this point I hope she doesn't get him.

Keeps getting better

Her writing improves with every book. Tightly written plot line with well developed characters who continue to grow. Nicely written with a conclusion and a hook into the next book without any annoying cliffhangers. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

Magic at war

I loved reading this book and I recommend it. What will happen to vampires and witches after they find the magic book. This magic book is not entirely good. There will be a confrontation. I am eager to read next book.

My favourite in the series so far. I'm enjoying the slow burn between Oliva and Reilly. And the author has slowed it down a bit, so I'm getting to enjoy it more. The first two books were a little fast-paced for me, this one is perfect. I'm bingeing this whole series!

By this book I was into the swing of the characters. This is not a book to be read as a stand alone. You will be totally last in the story line if you don’t Read them in order. With book is a lead up to the finally. It fills in the roles of the characters in the final book.
