JK Cooper is our pen name. We're a husband-wife writing team that creates paranormal romance and romantic urban fantasy. Thanks for stopping by. Our current project, The Summer Omega Series, launched with book 1, AWAKENING, in January 2018 to high acclaim. K challenged J to write a paranormal romance series with her in 2015. J chuckled at even the thought until he saw the deadly series glint in K's eyes. Thus began the Summer Omega Series, and J has paid for the laugh ever since.
We're raising our 4 daughters in Utah. When not writing about crazy-hot werewolves and the end of the world, we enjoy power sports on land and sea, reading, playing music, and hanging out with our family. Sometimes, we just have to break up sibling spats and count that as "family night." Alas...

MY TAKE I listened to the audiobook. Kate Reading is one of my favorite narrators, and she didn't disappoint.
This book is very well written. I could see the world around the characters and I was emotionally connected to them. That's hugely important to me in any story, the emotional connection.
The story itself is an interesting mixture of this brewing battle between the wolves and the hunters, all mingled in a typical high school YA story of the new girl getting on the wrong side of the mean girl group. In some ways, it could be called stereotypical or cliche--yet it's reflective of real life. Our attention can be easily pulled from the important stuff with the stupid and petty. Typical teens for way too many people. The battle part (and the psycho hunter and his rapist son) is brutal. Not as bad a The Hunger Games, but more than I expected.
The overall story is obviously bigger than this single book. Awakening has its arc with a satisfying conclusion. The funny thing is that it ends before the school year starts. There's an epilogue that sets up the story problem for the next book. I don't know how many are planned for the series.
With a more serious and complex backstory, engaging romance, and witty banter, Awakening blends fantasy and paranormal romance with comedic relief. Really enjoyed this book and exited for the series to continue.
I'm not into romance novels, but I was asked to take a chance on this one. I found the romance light and almost a back story, yet enough a part of the story to appeal to those who are looking for the mushy stuff. It was the rest of the story that hooked me. I'm really looking forward to the next chapter!
Full disclosure: I was given a free copy to offer an honest opinion.
While The Awakening contains plenty of the romance and angst common in the paranormal genre, there's also much more, things I like. First of all, I love a main character who's flawed but still relatable and likable. I'm not a fan of gray antiheroes, and Shelby is certainly the former rather than the latter. In addition, she isn't useless arm candy. She's smart, courageous, and willing to risk herself despite a near-crippling fear from her past experiences. In addition, she thankfully doesn't have that irritating notion of 'I'm pretty? Who knew?' Or any similar Mary Sue characteristics.
My favorite character, though, is Shelby's best friend who promised not to curse but manages to do so in the most analytical copulating way possible.
As for the villains, the hunters who seek the eradication of all werewolves, they are eminently unlikable. However, they are also interesting, tough, and intelligent. They also possess admirable courage as they use modern weapons and communications to help them in their quest. In addition, their creepiness factor rises due to their penchant for quoting the Bible to justify their torture and crimes.
My favorite part of the book, however, is the mystery, the notion of re-incarnation and the hidden grandeur that tells the truth about werewolves, about their split spirits and hints of another world. In other words, there's a plot here, one that isn't neatly wrapped up in one book but delves deeper into hidden realms and slowly revealed secrets.
What a great read, can't wait to read the next one. Good story, holds you captivated in what is around the corner. Very well developed, great characters and lots of suspense. Hope you like it too. Maybe my review will entice you to read what the book is about. Happy reading!
Intensely romantic and hilarious banter! A refreshing take on a paranormal romance. There is great character building, a strong female lead, and an intriguing background story. Awakening is very well written and I was engaged and entertained from start to cliff hanger. Definitely worth reading!
Awakening is a strong 3 star book. I enjoyed the overall concept. JK Cooper gave the main two characters a complicated back story. I found the twists in the plots enjoyable even if you knew they were coming.
Shelby, the lead character, is dealing with the issues of being a military brat (traveling alot), a new werewolf, and being sexually assaulted in her past. Even though Shelby is built up as the most important character, I felt more interested in her father. Her father, Grant, has a great story and I found myself wishing I was reading more about him and Shelby's mother.
The story did have the cliche love at first sight moment. But as I stated, you pretty much knew that was coming. There was also the annoying high school banter that went on between the girls and Shelby. I'd say this part of the story was my least favorite. I mean how often does the valley girl athlete have to lay claim to the star football player. And that same girls always hates any new girl on the spot. I think I've seen that in 100 movies and 1,000 books. It was so cliche that I was tempted to fastforward through some of it.
Towards the last few chapters the author started doing some wierd stuff with the chronology. It could be hard to follow... we conviently get a flashback at the perfect moment before the climax and throughout the climax these mystical memories appear to help a character... SMH. I'm not a fan of flashbacks. Use the prelogue for stuff like this.
In terms of how I use my stars to tally up a score this book hits the 3 star mark... but portions of the ending with the mystical memories coming just in time... that really sat with me wrong. I had to take a few hours before writing this so it wouldn't be the only thing I ranted about.
The narrator was OK. She definitely earned her 3 star rating.
This is a very interesting book! While some of the made up words were a bit difficult for me to remember, I still wanted to keep reading the story. There were some weird things, like this one point where there were like 5 pages describing the pack members that we really don’t care about. But I love the instant bond the main couple has and I can’t wait to see it develop.
Will definitely be reading the next book.
Side note, do the main character and best friends name have to be SO similar? I couldn’t remember which was which until the very end of the book. Sadie and Shelby.
Still a fun read though!
Also, this book is VERY high school. Like, so high school I had to skip a bunch of pages because of it. There’s the typical mean girl and her posse, and they’re much more ridiculous than the actual real-life high school popular kids. Kale and Shelby’s relationship was much more watered-down that it should be considering they have been in love in a previous life, and I don’t really think their being 17 would stop their still-in-love souls from needing to be together constantly.
This book wasn’t nearly as romantic as I expected based on the blurb, and the flashes to the werewolf hunters were just plain boring (but I love romance so...), but like I said, still a fun read.

Not sure why this is rated as 5 stars when it has a weak wolf heroine. The h was weak with panic attacks. This was because another guy did something to her. She was supposed to be able to fight but she couldn't even be in public to talk to another guy.
It out started well but after she met another character who rather talks about bowel movement and flatulence, it when down hill for me. I rather the person said a bad word or use another word other than poop. Just disgusting. Maybe this was supposed to humorous but to me it turned me off. Weird chose of words. Daily dose of anal crevices is one of the disgusting words used.
The difference on this werewolf story is the werewolf being the underdog and weak. The h was weak and she allowed the guy who molested her to win. This book had potential but having a weak heroine and a weak mate plus the flatulence corny humor are the reasons why I give this book a one. The protagonist in the end made her mate cry.
Never read a book with weak werewolf h, the characters that talks about anal crevices and flatulence. Sorry but this book was not for me. This is just my opinion.
The story may be interesting but the writing rubbed me the wrong way even with the good narrator on Audible. I had to return it. It is full of unnecessary and frustrating conversations like "Here comes the daily dose of solid waste from the anal crevice", "Does she always caw like this" "just when I got here as a copulating freshman" It feels like this book was written for the age group of 12-16 but with that language its hard to tell, also a lot of the words used seem like the author wanting to show of the great variety and number she knows, it feels very disjointed. Did not finish book, would not recommend.
After reading the blurb on this book I had quite high hopes, however the book felt rushed and jumpy and it was just a bit all over the place. This was to the point I felt like what is even going on?
The love story felt overly rushed and not believable as everything happened so quickly, there was no romantic development between Shelby and Kale to make the romance believable. They literally met and was in love instantly. This just didn’t draw me in and I am a huge fan of soulmates but didn’t have the vibes for me.
Don’t think I will be reading the next one when it is released.
I laughed a lot while I listened to this coming-of-age, paranormal shifter story, by JK Cooper... The story has your typical teen-theme feel... High school, Football, Gymnastics, girl bullies, etc, but with werewolves thrown into the mix! What sets this book apart from the usual formulaic story, is all the wonderful characters that they've created! How can I not mention Swearing Sadie and Bubba, just wait 'til you meet them, they are truly awesome... Kate Reading is one of my top favorite narrators, and there's times when I found myself so wrapped up in the story that I actually forgot it wasn't a full-cast audio... Yes, she's that good, and that's an awesome thing to experience!
I loved this book and I cannot wait until the next book comes out. I laughed my butt off and got a little teary eyed on parts. This book was just all around genius. I loved all the characters. Kale, Shelby, Sadie and Bubba was awesome! Bubba's humor cracked me up! We all have that one friend. Would love to read a face off between the prime Alpha and Omega. Can't wait for book 2
The book was excellent as the characters and story captured you in reading and listening, I purchased the Audible book also, and truly enjoyed it. The narrator, Kate Reading, did an excellent job. The story talks about past life’s and present between two teenage wolf shifters, but doesn’t have graphic sexual content. I recommend the book for teenagers and adults.
It’s a story about a daughter who was of a lycan mother and a human father who was a hunter sent to kill her mother, but fell in love. His daughter is an Omega which can bring harmony to Pack. You really will love the insta attraction of the Omega and an Alpha son. Can’t wait to read the next book Ascension.
Grant and Shelby have had a rough life. Always on the move and Shelby doesn't really know why until the year before. Grant hoped that she had not inherited her mother's traits. Unfortunately, she was a late bloomer and she injured the wrong person. Her father is now trying to find a pack that will welcome her as she is.
This book is a definite good read I love the idea of the two main characters. Having history that they did not even understand until ,their wolves awakened. I will be reading the rest of the series.
Mixed feelings on this one. There were things about it that I loved and other things that bothered me or flat out annoyed me. It was suspenseful and made me stay up late just to finish reading it to find out what happens. But it’s not one I’d read and reread.
I enjoyed the plot and the strong protagonists. The worldbuilding was unique with a very interesting take on the origins of werewolves. Much of the storyline was predictable, but interesting personalities such as Sadie and Bubba added some nice flavor.
Not quite sure how I got this. I love werewolves, but not the teenaged angst of a YA novel. Story was good, characters interesting, pretty good world building. Kiddie and sports, yuk.
