Too little to do most things on the farm, a little girl teaches herself to read using the Bible and eventually shares this knowledge with her family, much to their surprise.
This was an adorable story of life on a busy farm. Buy it was also the story of a little girl struggling to find her place. I love that while she was trying so hard to help and be like everyone else, she discovered a way to do something that nobody else in her family could do. The illustrations were so cute and added to the story perfectly.
To be honest, I don't know what to think about this book. I like the hard work and the different things that you see them doing on the farm but not how they treat Raven Hannah since she's young. I so appreciate that Raven Hannah takes initiative to learn to read because my oldest was like that, but not how she responds to it with Grandma. It's a very odd mix and I don't really know what to do with it.
The children liked it but it was not one of their favorites.
turn of the century New England. Because she is the youngest in the family, Raven feels that she is least of all the family. But it is only on her own that she learns to do something that no one else in the family can do: read!
My mother bought this for me as a child as I was the youngest of four and also a voracious reader. this book and artwork always stuck with me. Thanks mom!
