Danger #2

Trusting Danger

Rate this book
When a threat against a woman turns deadly, things becomes personal for the agent protecting her.

Grayson Matthews's mother is dying, but that's not the only thing keeping him up at night. Assigned to protect a senator's daughter from a kidnap threat, he's tearing his hair out. The woman's demanding, frustrating, and the sexiest thing he's ever seen.

Claire Parker is sick to death of everyone thinking she's privileged. She's working on a case to finish her law degree, and this infuriating federal agent thinks he's going to keep her locked up in a safe house, preventing her from seeing her client.

But when someone ends up dead, not even a safe house can protect them.

Trusting Danger is written as a standalone and is the second book in the Danger Series, romantic-suspense novels that follow the members of an elite federal group, the Phoenix Task Force.

I bemoaned the other day about romantic suspense novels using the “suspense” plot as a means to get the characters together and then basically dropping it. I was ready to give up hope of finding one I enjoyed. And then Trusting Danger fell into my lap.

I thought Jaynes and Simonian did a great job at keeping the mystery of who wanted Claire kidnapped a secret. They threw in a few red herrings and while I had some suspicions, I was never completely sure who it was.

I struggled with liking Claire at first, but she grew on me as I learned more about her. Grayson, on the other hand, hooked me from the start. Their romance is a bit hate to love that gradually builds. I thought Claire and Grayson complimented each other well.

I liked that Jaynes and Simonian didn’t shy away from tragedy and heartache and that they happened in a real and believable way.

This is book 2 in a stand-alone series and while I haven’t read book 1 yet, I plan to remedy that soon.

"In Grayson's mind, all of it added up to a spoiled rich girl with no ambition, values, or convictions, and that simply pissed him the hell off. He'd worked too hard for what he'd accomplished and had no patience for self-serving, entitled trust fund babies.".....

Agent Grayson Matthews has been assigned to protect a senators daughter, Claire Parker. While investigating a drug ring it became clear that Claire was about to become a kidnapping target. Gray and his partner, Jeremy, rush to protect her from an unknown kidnapper.

Claire has been studying law at the Georgetown University in Washington D.C.. She’s working on a project that involves a young man arrested for dealing drugs outside his job. There’s more to Claire than law school, and being a senators daughter.

I’m careful using the word “romance” in any book review. I’ve found my regular blog readers think I’ve jumped my genre. It’s not always what you think. I’m hoping to open your reading categories a bit by doing these reviews. You’d be surprised at how good these books actually are! Romance is not just for young girls and little old ladies with lots of cats. Concentrate on the word suspense here. Okay I have cats.

Back to my review... Claire has her own issues. A demanding boyfriend, hand picked by the parents. Is law school really for her? Grayson is also dealing with a personal tragedy. I think these things connect them when a tragic event occurs.

Even though Grayson and Claire get off to a rocky start there are things that are going to make them see each other differently. There’s danger, action and suspense, with a little romance on the side. Can it last or is it fleeting?

There’s a third book coming in the “Danger” series. There is an update of sorts from the original couple in the first book, Camden and Autumn. I was glad to see that. Great, quick weekend read.

Thank you Caila Jaynes and Allyson Simonian

I enjoyed the plot of this book and was so intrigued to see who was behind everything! I do wish there had been a little more balance with the romance, particularly towards the beginning of the book. It took a while Grayson and Claire to even tolerate each other, but I did like when they finally got together.

What a great book! It had suspense, mystery, and romance. It’s the kind of romance I really love, with a grumpy hero who bickers with the heroine at first because neither of them want to acknowledge the chemistry simmering between them. The characters here are complex, especially Grayson, with tragedy in both his past and present that he’s dealing with. At first, he thinks Claire is a spoiled rich girl, but as the story develops he realizes she’s not that at all. The compassion she shows for him and the strength she reveals have him questioning the solitary life he’s chosen. They also have him questioning his professionalism because his job is to protect Claire, not fall in love with her.

Trusting danger is a fast-paced story that I didn’t want to put down. The mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat and the romance keeps you turning the pages. I don’t want to give too much away, but the payoff at the end was worth every moment of the journey.
