An account of the authors adventures in three different yachts, the Kelpie, Saoirse and Ilen. He used the Kelpie, a 26 ton cutter, to smuggle arms into Ireland during the 'troubles'.
Firstly let me say that this book has been incorrectly attributed to Conor Cruise O'Brien. The author was Conor OBrien (who always wrote his name without an apostrophe). Born in 1880, he sailed around the world 1923 to 1925 in a yacht, Saoirse, designed by Conor and built at the Fishery School in Baltimore, West Cork, Ireland. The voyage was ground breaking and earned him the Royal Cruising Club Challenge Cup in each year he was away, 1923, 1924 and 1925. This was his second yacht. His first yacht was Kelpie in which he ran guns to Ireland for the Irish Volunteers in 1914. Kelpie sank in of the coast of Scotland in 1921, this prompted him to build Saoirse (referred to above) During his circumnavigation, he spent 3 months in the Falklands /Malvinas. After returning to Ireland he got a contract to design and deliver a boat to the Falklands for inter Island trading, along the lines of Saoirse but with an engine. He delivered the boat himself with 2 crew from Cape Clear, off the West Cork coast. From three yachts tells the story of his experiences on the three yachts. The original book was issued in 1928, with a revised edition in 1950. Both editions have been out of print for some time, until recently when a reprint of the revised edition was published on line through the Lulu.com website, where it can now be ordered, via the following link: https://www.lulu.com/shop/conor-obrie....
