This must-have junior novel with an 8-page full-color insert retells the story of the much-anticipated theatrical release of High School Musical 3, which finds high school seniors Troy and Gabriella facing the prospect of being separated from one another as they head off to different colleges. Joined by the rest of the Wildcats, they stage an elaborate spring musical reflecting their experiences, hopes, and fears about the future. High School Musical 3 will be released in theaters in Fall 2008.
The Wildcat’s make a major comeback and win the championship game. Jimmy “the Rocket” Zara scores the winning shot when Troy passes the ball to him who is wide open. Everybody is excited for the upcoming senior events, but anxious for their futures. Gabriella convinces the group to participate in the spring musical; Senior Year, completely about them. However, Gabriella is accepted into an honors program at Stanford, causing the musical to fall apart as Sharpay has to play Gabriella and everyone is pretty depressed especially Troy. They all expected Gabriella would come back for the prom, musical, and graduation, but she says saying good-bye again and again will just make it worst. Troy’s heart is broken, and he doesn’t know where his future lies as he is torn between theatre and basketball. Sharpay and Ryan “want it all” as always. Though Julliard is considering Kelsi, Troy, and the Evans’ twins, there is only one scholarship. Troy skips out on prom and spends it with the only person he can imagine dancing his last waltz with, Gabriella. They decide to drive back to Albuquerque for the musical, but they won’t make until the second half, so, Jimmy has to fill in as he is the understudy. He arrives late for his cue, and Sharpay, expecting to see Troy, is completely shocked to see Jimmy in his goofy costume. She feels as though she has made a fool of herself, and when Troy and Gabriella arrive she feels even worst for they always steal the spotlight. When she arrives in her dressing room the least expected thing happens. Her British personal assistant, Tiara Gold, is prepared for her curtain call for playing the role of Sharpay. When Sharpay makes a dazzling entrance in the middle of the song they battle it out for center stage. The musical is a success, and Ryan is offered the dance scholarship to Julliard while Kelsi is offered the music scholarship. To Tiara’s disappointment, Sharpay will run the drama department while Ms. Darbus is out. Taylor will be attending Yale, Chad of course will be shooting hoops for the University of Albuquerque, Gabriella obviously is going to continue her studies at Stanford, and then Troy to everyone’s surprise does not choose U of A. He picks the University of California because they offer him both theatre and basketball. Plus, he’ll be closer to his true inspiration, Gabriella. Troy gives a graduation speech to sum up their time spent at East high. A sneak peek into the future shows Jimmy and Donnie taking over Troy and Chad’s place on the Wildcats’ team. It was exactly like the movie minus the songs and dances. Now, I can relive it every time I read the book. It was realistic, and it was a bittersweet feeling to have read of the Wildcats last adventure together. I cried after reading it as I did with the movie. The characters were fully developed and had their own unique personalities. It was very fun and exploratory. The problems that they as seniors had to deal with were completely believable. Again, I fell in love with the tale.
I have read this book about 20 times, I have edited it so that it exactly fits the movie. You don't have to be as crazy as I am, but I am obsessed enough that I went to East High. I am even using it to memorize the movie (save money on tickets)
One can only watch High School Musical 3 so many times before completely losing their sanity. How many times is too many, you may ask. Well, it is however many times I have been forced to watch it by my dear friend Caroline. If I tried to put a number to it, I would guess at least 67 times approximately. As a result, I do not hold warm feelings for this movie novel. N.B. Grace is an expert at movie adaptation, however, so I know it's good. I do think there is something problematic about making musicals into movie novels. I have a solution to this problem. We should just stop making musicals. Boom! You're welcome, movie novel fans.
I finished this book in 6 hours, because it was so short and because it was surprisingly good. I was very happy that Kelsey and Ryan got the Juilllard scholarships, and I was also happy that they went to prom together. I was surprised that Gabriella and Troy chose the school that they did, especially Troy. I liked that it had a not totally predictable ending. My favorite chapter was the last one, and my favorite part was when the senior's colleges were announced, because it gave the only closure the book had to offer.

The Last Book in the HSM Series. Now their in their senior year of high school and their trying to go their separate ways after high school. Their doing one last musical together to make sure their short period of time they have left together is worth while.
This book is good, but not like the movie. Close, not the same. I think it would be good to read it before you watch the movie. Though, I did not. It it still a pretty good book.
