Ceremonial Magic: A Guide to the Mechanisms of Ritual

Rate this book
The proper working of ritual is at the heart of the Western magical tradition. This book shows exactly how ceremonial techniques can be used to concentrate and harness the enormous psychic and spiritual potential of human consciousness.

Dr. Regardie's detailed analysis and description of key rituals are based on his own considerable experience and his knowledge of Golden Dawn techniques. In addition to providing practical instructions on robes, ritual equipment and decor, he also links current occult practice to broader historical precedents.

The daily repetition of ritual brings about an enormous increase in psycho-spiritual sensitivity and provides essential preparation for the final act of initiation—that state of spiritual enlightenment that is the goal of the true occultist.

Israel Regardie (born Francis Israel Regudy) was considered by many to be the last living Adept of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. At an early age, Regardie worked as Aleister Crowley's personal secretary. In addition to his extensive writings, Regardie practiced as a chiropractor and as a neo-Reichian therapist. He taught psychiatry at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and contributed articles to many psychology magazines.

Israel Regardie’s name tends to come up often while exploring the occult world. There’s a good reason why he’s so prominent – beyond the fact that he was Aleister Crowley’s secretary for a time, Regardie was the man responsible for publishing all the material of the Golden Dawn ritual system for the public – he broke his oath of secrecy to do this, believing it would keep the Knowledge from being lost or corrupted (as the G.D. had, by his time, crumbled into offshoot branches – he was a member of one, the Stella Matutina). This act perhaps incurred much magical wrath upon him as well, by those opposed to his work. But others, such as Dion Fortune, supported him. Besides these complete G.D. texts, Regardie is known for having written various well-regarded books on occult subjects, including “The Middle Pillar” which I hope to read some day.

This book was originally published in 1980, which makes it a rather late entry in Dr. Regardie’s career before his death in 1985.

“A Guide to the Mechanisms of Ritual” is a very technical book, and as such, is not for a beginner. It is not even among the most famous books by Regardie. But not long ago, I was in an esoteric book store and I was torn between buying two books – this one, and another. I ended up choosing the other book (I’ll have to make another post about -that- some time) but within days, I was feeling both curiosity about the Regardie book, and regret that I hadn’t chosen it instead. So I ordered it and dove in...

“Instead of trying to rush results, [the student] would do better to devote himself steadfastly to the discipline, working assiduously at his appointed tasks, using the ritual described in this book once daily, or more often as he has the skill and time to perform, without imposing on himself a time limit. In this way, he could work quietly but steadily over a long period of time, perhaps several years, until the illumination dawns upon him when he is ready…”

This text contains a ritual called the “Opening By Watchtower” as well as several “elaborations” (which are suggested ways to expand the ritual if desired). It also contains a brief but effective gloss over the Lesser and Greater Banishing Rituals of the Pentagram, and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram. The remaining middle chunk of the book has variations of the ‘Fragment of a Graeco-Egyptian Work on Magic’ which became the ‘Preliminary Invocation’ in the Goetia of the Lesser Key of Solomon, and finally the ‘Bornless Ritual’ of Crowley. An essay in Appendix II, “A Greek Ritual of Magic”, is an extended analysis of “The Bacchae”, a tragedy by Euripides, with the intention of using it as an example of how to use drama in ritual effectively.

If you already own Crowley’s “Book 4 – Liber ABA” (the huge blue hardcover), you will notice some overlap of material here (both contain the Lesser & Greater Pentagram and Lesser Hexagram Rituals, and Liber Samekh). But the “Opening By Watchtower” is only in Regardie; NOT in Crowley. A criticism is that the O.b.W. ritual mentions ‘Elemental Tablets’ with Sigils placed at the cardinal points, but has no pictures of these for use. Otherwise it reproduces many of the same diagrams in Crowley for the Rituals, but not all of them (it does not picture the positions one stands in for the GBRP [Signs of the Portal, Elements, etc] which Crowley does). Overall, this is an interesting book for a collector, but perhaps not essential unless you really want this specific Ritual.

Certainly not a book for those without some prior understanding, this book includes the complete Opening by the Watchtowers, Crowley's Bornless Ritual, some commentaries on both and on the subject of the Mystery Traditions. An interesting read.
