Completely rewritten!

Tanya, a techie, is the newest member of the crew of the Queen Anne's Revenge. Her former crewmates considered her as a trouble maker not worthy of keeping her position aboard their cargo ship. They were about to sell her into a life of slavery in the Alliance, but Doc and Nathaniel Roberts rescued her. She made a six-year commitment to Nathaniel, as a bridge officer, in exchange for her freedom. She is loyal to him.
Natasha is the name of the starship's AI. Tanya is teaching her avatar on how to act more like humans. That means learning how to lie and cheat. She rarely leaves Tanya's side and serves as her companion.
Nathaniel Roberts recently took over as captain of the Queen Anne's Revenge. During the last three years, the Alliance confiscated everything of value except his ship. That is next. He also lost his extended family and friends. They were either conscripted into the military or brain wiped and given a new personality in their reeducation centers.
Captain Roberts and his crew are at the end of their resources. If he doesn't make the next tax payment, he will lose the starship and maybe his life. The Alliance military is watching him, making sure that he doesn't escape. The next time the Alliance boards his ship will be his last time. His first command decision is escaping the Alliance and crossing the border into the Collation of Free Worlds where he can start a new life.
He and his crew will become exiles; he doesn't care. Nathaniel has no intention of returning to Alliance territory. Now, it is up to Captain Roberts to restore his family wealth and get revenge against the Alliance for what they did to his friends and family.
Nathaniel is unaware that the Alliance is breaking a century-old treaty in preparation for war. The Alliance isn't alone; they have formed a pact with the Crimson Tide, a pirate organization. Captain Roberts won't be facing one enemy; he will be facing two. He will have to fight both of them while trying to make a new home for his crew.

"The Queen Anne's Revenge."
When I read the splurge about this book, I requested, and was freely gifted with a complimentary copy by Story Origin. I really expected to like this book: space rogues leaving behind the oppressive system which taxes people out of existence to force them either into the military or become virtual slaves, new territories visited, new criends, and enemies, encountered. And even the threat of war in the not to far distance. So much opportunity for adventure, colour and, perhaps, even humour. But instead of enjoying Exiles, after the initial few pages I found it increasingly hard to continue. At one point, around a third of the way in, I decided to take a break for a few days and come back, refreshed, to finish. Didn't work. My return only reminded me strongly of why I had given up in the first place. And now about half way through I must admit defeat and dec!are this a Did Not Finish - something I am always loathe to do.

The basic premise is still a good one, but so much edittkng work needs to be done before launching it into the reading world. There are changing tenses, missing words, altering points of view, sometimes before a section is completed and without warning. In other words, a mess.. Added to this the characters were very superficially drawn, attempted humour fell flat because of poor writing and the whole began to feel like a long, superficial, juvenile sex romp interrupted occasionally by the need to fight quickly concluded and ridiculously easily won battles. For example, after sex with an Android and surprised that there was no post coital cuddle, the captain watches a sex film, proposes marriage to his girlfriend telling her how much he loves her, drugs her twin sister, who earlier had robbed him after their drunken sex in an hotel, wheels her and her current but very temporary partner in a cart to his own wedding, puts rings on their fingers and, with the connivance of the officiating officer, has them married at the same time as he takes his own vows: double wedding to the next day horror of the finally revived other couple.I

I'm sorry but I just can't go on.
My rating of 2 stars is harsh given that I did not finish, but awarded for the idea and potential not the writing itself.

Space-born captain becomes admiral for Buenos Aires star system and marries governor's daughter - 3.5 stars

When you are born a spacer, you have license to chase after the opposite sex when at port even if you are married and your spouse is with you. In addition, you are more or less expected to drink to excess and your spouse won't mind too much. Also, both spouses do this behavior and review highlights later with each other.

There is a fair amount of wish-it-were-true thinking that marital infidelity is fine for the goose and the gander not to speak of shooting at the Alliance navy or at the Crimson Tide ships will nearly always succeed.

This fast moving (faster than light in hyperspace at least) action with downtime dalliance that has no specifics but lots of posturing concerning carnal pleasures in this story. Space docks can almost always rebuild a starship quickly. Piracy always pays handsomely. Merchants are always fair, prices are good and people are satisfied with their lot. Relationships are a bit shallow.

Technology has come a long way; science will have to wait. There is more escapism than science and less realism than comic books. Entertaining yes. It seems to be written in a college freshman's view of how life could be if you had chosen the life of a pirate.

Captain Nathaniel Roberts loses a couple of fights and gets mugged and drugged in an alleyway but is only slightly inconvenienced. In one two-minute sequence, Nathaniel is picked up, his broken arm is set, he is loaded into a hovering ship which then flies out of a starship and then...(you will remember this scene!) boom! Dreams are realized here. Amber, her friend Jewel, and Amber's sister Beverly are gorgeous; each has a fling with Nathaniel before Nathaniel marries one of them. It's a wonderful world.

I wanted to like this. The basics of a good story are there. Space ships, the bad government in control, pirates, escape, help the frontier stay free, bars, women, and trade. But, the book is so badly in need of editing. Words missing, grammar, verb and noun agreement, verb tenses, and misspellings in every chapter. I almost quit reading after 25% but didn't because it was a new author for me and I wanted to give him a chance. I received the book for free having signed up for his newsletter after reading a short story I came across through a website with freebies being offered.

The author attempted to write the story in the 1st person, but then changed perspectives, characters, and location without transition. I think he would have been more successful if he had written it in the 3rd person.

On a personal level, the whole what happens in Vegas attitude toward sex bothered me. Worse though was that the young captain just didn't seem to really do much. Most of the time he was busy drinking, getting laid, recouping from his activities, and telling his bridge crew to do things for him. I never connected with any of the characters.

Queen Anne’s Revenge is a Ship best served Cold.

Captain Nathaniel Roberts has a penchant for finding trouble. Even in the vastness of space, trouble seems to find him. Using his notorious ship and crew, when he isn’t pillaging and plundering, he is leading a revolution. One that will cost his enemies dearly. If it doesn’t kill him first.

Jay Toney captures some unique technical and relational elements while wrapping them up in an action-packed landscape of grand proportions. His world-building takes us on a wild ride through a universe littered with hazards and challenges.

Captain Roberts and his crew of misfits seem well suited to living on the wrong side of the law. But one man’s law is another man’s boundary to cross. And Roberts has always been one to cross lines.

This action story has many elements to keep you glued to the book.

Going against the Goliath of space called the Alliance and the Crimson Tide, those of the Collation of Free Worlds unite under the command of Nathaniel Roberts with the encouragement of his father who is also the ship's doctor, and the love of his life, Amber.
All this takes courage, steel, and reserve... despite the overwhelming odds. That is just what Nathaniel possesses and more when confronted with a colossus enemy that is intent on annihilating all who would dare to resist their demands. In this installment, his revenge against the Alliance is absolute as he and his ragtag fleet of warriors go up against those they despise... even if it should cost them the "life" of their beloved ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.

Will they succeed or fail? Only time will tell.

I made it 20% and couldn't go any further. Not bad for a first draft, slice-of-life story in space but desperately needs an editor. The narrative style is rough to say the least, switching randomly between various points of view, characters and tenses with no transitions. Scenes don't begin or end and it's not always clear who is speaking when presented with dialog.
I think there was a plot? A ship on the run from governmental forces over taxes owed goes off into the reaches of space, destroying everything that stands in their way; Really, there's no build-up in the conflict, battles are won easily, and then they move on, party it up at some station, get drunk, and hook up with androids and other characters at will.

I got this for free, thankfully, or I'd be asking for my money back. This is an acceptable level of sci-fi prose to be handed in as a writing assignment in a higher level high school or college class. It doesn't seem to have been edited thoroughly, and the author needs some time to practice their craft. This book is one of those practice sessions - hopefully Jay Tony's writing improves over time.

It's not terrible, but I only made it 10% of the way through the book before I decided I'd rather go read something else. Something less "Mary Sue", less "we fight the enemies and win without difficulty" and something with some tightness of plot.

The continuing story of captain Roberts and his crew seeking goods to raid and battles to fight , this time he has a new mate at his side and her contacts start the making of a formidable fleet and with new allies he has gained from other territories let the battles begin.
As with the first book the action scenes are well written and the characters private lives trysts make this an extremely enjoyable read.
I have no hesitation in totally recommending this book.

Received as a review copy, this is an honest review. With the Alliance making Nathaniel Roberts and his crew life difficult; forces them to work on the fringes of society... but being a space pirate is not easy. With a looming war by opposing forces could put even their barely surviving status in jeopardy. Highly recommended.

Not bad

Not bad for this book. It had a few editing errors, but I can live with that. Loved the storyline, character development. I'll definitely be reading more from this author and of this series as well.

A diamond in the rough...

A great story with good characters and good “chemistry”. The book and its predecessor both suffer from the lack (I assume) of a proofreader. While that does detract some, these books have been highly entertaining and are well worth reading.

Fast paced action story.
More into characters than how things work but I like a book I can just read and not get bogged down with the technical stuff now and then.
Give it a read if you like action.

Exiles is a really good story with some characters that are sure to make you find one you like. This book has a little bit of everything, including sex and love. Sci Fi with plenty of space ship action. I enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to anyone who likes Sci Fi

I just couldn't do it.

After the first few pages, 12 to be exact, I couldn't bring myself to continue. I do not recommend this attempt at a book.
