Elizabeth’s 15-year-old daughter never made it home from school. She disappeared into thin air and her body was never found. For Elizabeth, the only thing worse than losing her daughter was not knowing what happened to her. Frustrated with the police for not providing enough answers, Elizabeth sets out on a journey of her own. When she learns the devastating truth of Ana’s disappearance she seeks out the one person who can help her…Monroe Connors.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF IT WAS YOUR MOTHER?
Monroe’s name and face has been splayed over news channels all over the world as the woman who single handedly exposed the Las Vegas human trafficking operation. However, the praise she’s been receiving does not sit well with her because she is aware that the threat of danger isn’t over. When confronted with an ultimatum, Monroe realizes that she must make a Justice for her mother or justice for all.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF IT WAS YOUR LIFE?
Monroe and Elizabeth come together in this chilling sequel as two women determined to save their loved ones but what started out as a common goal quickly turns into a game of Russian roulette. They must choose to save a mother, a daughter or themselves…
One week after Monroe had a showdown with her mother's partners in crime, Monroe is contacted by the mother of a missing girl. The girl, Ana, had been missing for a year with no leads. The police seem to be twiddling their thumbs. Ana's mother sees all the media hype about Monroe and decides to pay her a visit to see if there is any way at all that Monroe can help.
Elizabeth, Ana's mother, is a train wreck. She's an alcoholic, her husband has taken their twin sons and moved out of the house, and she is jobless. She's understandably devastated about the disappearance of Ana and has pretty much given up on life.
One night while in a drunken stupor, her phone rang. Thinking it was a telemarketer, she let it go to voicemail. When she later checked it, she heard a message from an unknown girl saying Ana was alive. Going to Monroe was a last act of desperation.
Monroe is less than willing to help at first. She's still recovering from the altercation that took place in the first book, "Abandoned Secrets" and is having issues with her boyfriend, Dominic. She dealt with a bunch of really bad dudes, almost lost her best friend, and sustained injuries herself. But she calls in Lance, who does his magic by tracing the mysterious phone number and getting a good idea of where Ana is. Monroe finds herself hot on the trail of these same bad guys.
There's a lot of action in this book that kept up the momentum, some illicit drug use at a most inopportune time, and a pretty good ending. The characters were flawed and believable. I find Monroe to be selfish and self-centered, but she gets the job done. The plot was a bit confusing in places due to abrupt scene changes with no indicators to separate them. Arbitrary capitalization of words, commas in weird places, and wrong word usage disrupted the reading experience.
This book has a lot of potential. The story itself is quite good. It just needs a trip to a good editor.
