Rabat, été 2015.Suite à la parution de son livre Dans le jardin de l’ogre, un roman cru et audacieux qui aborde la thématique de l’addiction sexuelle, Leila Slimani part à la rencontre de ses lectrices marocaines. Face à cette écrivaine francomaghrébine décomplexée qui aborde la sexualité sans tabou, la parole se libère. Au fil des pages, l’auteur recueille des témoignages intimes déchirants qui révèlent le malaise d’une société hypocrite dans laquelle la femme ne peut être que vierge ou épouse, et où tout ce qui est hors mariage est nié : prostitution, concubinage, homosexualité. Le code pénal punit toute transgression : un mois à un an de prison pour les relations hétérosexuelles hors mariage, six mois à trois ans de prison pour les relations homosexuelles, un à deux ans de prison pour les adultères. Soumises au mensonge institutionnalisé, ces femmes nous racontent les tragédies intimes qui égrènent leurs vies et celles des femmes qui les entourent : IVG clandestines, viols, lynchages, suicides. Toutes sont tiraillées entre le désir de se libérer de cette tyrannie et la crainte que cette libération n’entraîne l’effondrement des structures traditionnelles. A travers cette BD, il s’agit de faire entendre la réalité complexe d’un pays où l’islam est religion d’Etat. Et où le droit des femmes passera, avant tout, par la défense de leurs droits sexuels.

On a book tour in Morocco, Leïla Slimani meets Nour, one of her readers, who talks without taboos about her sexuality and the intimate tragedies of many women in her circle of acquaintances. Based on this moving encounter, Slimani decides to look into this topic in more detail. She meets a number of different women and, through their personal stories, discovers the drama of a patriarchal society that suppresses the desire for freedom and equality.
In this graphic novel, Slimani impressively portrays the complex reality of her home country where Islam is the state religion and women struggle for their rights.
"To free the sexuality, especially of women, you have to first free the words," says Leïla after a reading in Rabat. "The Arab revolutions, the emergence of a middle class and the proliferation of social networks are increasingly making it possible for people to express themselves more freely. I like it a lot, it gives me hope for the future."
Thanks to the literary success of Slimani’s book Dans le jardin de l’ogre, she was able to visit Morocco for a book tour, during which she met Nour. An encounter that became the starting point for two more book projects: The essay and interview collection Sexe et mensonges: La vie sexuelle au Maroc and this graphic novel, Paroles d’honneur, developed together with the artist Laetitia Coryn.
The meetings and discussions with women in Morocco have shown her that "some laws on sexuality, but also the social constraints in general" complicate the emancipation. Recognizing that despite the Arab Spring and political promises, the situation for women in Morocco remains difficult, Slimani wanted to give these women a voice.
Structurally, this graphic novel is very interesting. When Nour tells her of her sex lifes and integrates into her narrative the memories of her friends, Slimani ties these stories seamlessly together. For example, Nour reports of her former roommate Zhor, who had to experience the power of moral education in Morocco painfully: "As a child, I was taught and preached to that it is wrong to sleep with someone." As a teenager, she was raped. "Back then, I was more afraid of my parents and society than of the rape itself. I was convinced that they locked me up, that they accused me of provoking the guys."
This fear was not out of the question: when she told her friends about it and word spread, the result was that Zhor had to live with the hostile looks of her neighbors and her parents. Because of similar experiences, many women keep the experience of rape to themselves. Zhor was able to free herself from the morality that was forced on her and told Nour when they met: "I'm 28 and single, and I like that! I have no intention of marrying, at most perhaps as a marriage of convenience. "
In the comic Leïla Slimani also gives voice to a lesbian woman, who rejects such a fictitious marriage. However, she does not live an openly lesbian life: "Here in Morocco I always feel threatened - but I also know that as long as I do not expose myself, nobody will show up at my place. In that sense, I feel like every hetero."
Leïla Slimani and the artist Laetitia Coryn portray women like Nour or Zhor, who are not content with the slow progress of the Maghreb's emancipation process. "The Moroccan woman is not subjected to, she’s just screwed," says sociologist Sanaa El Aji. Although women are taking up more and more public positions and there is no headscarf compulsion in Morocco, it has been shown time and again that religious morality is rooted too deeply in society to be overcome within a few years.
Despite such reports and political setbacks as the legal decision to allow the right to legal abortions only in case of rape, incest and severe fetal malformations, and the difficulties of single women to find a home without a man, Slimani remains cautiously optimistic. The warm colors of the images of Laetitia Coryn and the depicted expanse of the Moroccan landscape are also intended to symbolize a Morocco that at least has the potential to enable women to express their sexuality freely. The future and hope lies with the youth.

Tant les dessins que les textes sont excellents, engagés pour dénoncer la condition des femmes au Maroc. Une BD-reportage utile, extrêmement bien réalisée et marquante.

Najprv som chcela dat menej hviezdiciek ale potom som si uvedomila, pre koho je urceny tento komiks. V prvom rade pre Marocanov, aby dostali nastavene zrkadlo. No a potom aj pre nas ostatnych. Niektore stereotypy, co su tam, platia este stale aj u nas, myslim tu na malom Slovensku, takze tvarit sa, ze to nie je aj nase zrkadlo je podla mna hovadina.

První, co zaujme čtenáře, je samozřejmě název - sex prodává. Ačkoliv původní název zní Paroles d'Honneur, tedy Slova (o) cti, je pochopitelné, proč Argo sáhlo po bulvárním titulku. Kromě toho, že sex prodává (a málokdy odradí), to poměrně věrně vystihuje obsah knihy.
Protože kdo by si jinak chtěl číst o těžkém osudu žen v muslimské společnosti? Je to téma komplexní, závažné, feministické. A sex je toho nedílnou součástí. Ale jsou to jenom takové temné spodní proudy - protože když je společnost pokrytecká (a i Evropa taková kdysi byla), jsou věci, o kterých se nemluví, které jsou tabu a přesto o nich (téměř) všichni ví.
Maroko je sice z pohledu Evropana liberálnější než jiné muslimské státy, ale i tak je svázáno a ovládáno konzervativním výkladem islámu, který potlačuje ženská práva.
Leïla Slimani je další z francouzko-muslimských autorek, která po odchodu z rodné země začala kriticky a upřímně psát o věcech, které v muslimských společnostech nejsou v pořádku. A tak podobně jako Marjane Satrapi, či Abnousse Shalmani, přináší svůj osobní příběh, jež se prolíná tu s velkými, tu s malými dějinami, iteruje skrz osobní setkání a nastavuje zrcadlo, jež odráží mužský šovinismus.
Všechny tři autorky zaplatily za svou svobodu mluvit tím, že byly vytrženy z kořenů rodné kultury (protože pouze Francie jim takovou svobodu umožňuje) a zažívají tak emigrantské odcizení. Nicméně, ta oběť stojí za to, protože tak zároveň můžou mluvit za miliony bezejmenných muslimských žen.
A jestliže tak (často) činí formou komiksu? Grafické romány už dávno prokázaly, že dokážou nést i ty nejtěžší lidské strasti. Takže když může být oceňovaný komiks o holokaustu, proč by nemohl být komiks o těžkém údělu žen v muslimské teokracii. Sex included.

Un livre puissant sur la sexualité et la condition féminine, des rapports sociaux et de la religion au Maroc. Un must-read qui rappelle la nécessité d'un vent de changement radical dans les pays orientaux. Un rappel que la femme n'est pas un objet et est égalitaire à tout autre sexe.

Super spannender Einblick in das Leben marrokanischer Menschen, vor allem von Frauen (es würde mich auch noch mehr intersektionale Perspektiven interessieren, aber ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es noch schwieriger ist, an diese zu kommen als schon an die von Frauen).

La femme au Maroc n'est pas aussi libre ni libérée que celle en Europe.
Dans notre pays qui prétend prôner un islam "modéré", nous sommes jugées non selon nos compétences, mais selon notre "dignité" (a.k.a hymen).
J'apprécie énormément l'effort de Leila et son envie de discuter d'un sujet aussi important que celui du sexe au Maroc, c'est un premier pas.
Je salue également la sincérité des personnages et le réalisme des histoires.

Citat o sexe a slobode (sexualnej ale aj vseobecnej) z inych krajin otvara oci. V com sme u nas rovnako obmedzeni a obmedzovani, v com sme slobodnejsi. A Slimani vie o sexe pisat. Tu sa to spojilo v grafickom romane a velmi sa to vydarilo. Mam rada detailne a jasne rozlisitelne ilustracie. Podarilo sa vykreslit nielen charaktery, ale aj atmosferu Maroka. A komiks zarucuje, ze sa hovori o tom podstatnom.

Leila Slimani týmto grafickým románom doslova " oslobodzuje slovo", presne tak, ako sa volá prvá kapitola knihy. Oslobodzuje slová mnohých žien. Žien, ktoré túžia mať po európskom vzore život vo vlastných rukách. Chcú mať možnosť žiť život podľa vlastných predstáv.
Najviac ma zaujalo stretnutie Leily s Asmou Lamrabet, ktoré interpetuje texty Korábu zo ženskej perspektivy a ukazuje, ako sa tieto texty prekrúcajú a z náboženstva sa stáva upjatý paušalizovaný vzor morálky.

1. Žiť skryté životy a každý deň i noc sa obliekať do pretvárky je prosto bláznovstvo.
2. Mám rada komiksy, ktoré nie sú sexistické - a veruže, veľa ich zrejme nie je.
3. V tejto forme má téma potenciál dostať sa i k ľuďom, ktorí sa o ňu nezaujímajú alebo k tým, ktorí by sa k nej inak nedostali.
Krátke a zaujímavé čítanie pre každú a pre každého.

Très bonne discussion sur la vie sexuelle au Maroc. La bande dessinée discute de sujets qui nécessitent que les tabous soient brisée! L'autrice, ainsi que la dessinatrice, ont vraiment une belle plume ❤️

Une BD très douce, au sujet difficile, mais traité tout en finesse grâce à la plume de Leïla Slimani et à la ligne simple et efficace de Laetitia Coryn. La sexualité et les femmes au Maroc : sujet tabou ? Mentalités religieuses conservatrices et misogynes ? Changements législatifs progressistes ? Tout est brièvement abordé mais toujours avec justesse.

MEINE MEINUNG Auf einer Leserreise in Marokko begegnet Leila Slimani Nour, einer jungen Marokkanerin, die mit ihr sehr offen über Themen wie Sex, Sexualität und intimen Tragödien redet – Themen, die in Marokko Tabuthemen sind. Davon inspiriert schreibt und adaptiert sie dies zusammen mit Laetitia Coryn zu einer Graphic Novel-Reportage, die es in sich hat. Der Comic ist perfekt gestaltet und macht so unglaublich viel Spaß beim Lesen. Zudem ist er so interessant, dass man damit auch gar nicht aufhören will und schafft es, wichtige Themen unglaublich spannend zu verpacken. Damit erinnert sie auf wundervolle Weise an die Dringlichkeit des Kampfs für die Grundrechte von Frauen. Eine Graphic Novel, die inspirierend und schön zugleich ist und mich sicher noch lange begleiten wird.

Leila Slimanis in Zusammenarbeit mit Laetitia Coryn gestaltete Graphic Novel-Reportage begeistert auf ganzer Linie: Wunderschön gestaltet, informativ, fesselnd und ein wichtiges Thema ansprechend. Mes amis m'ont offert cette bande-dessinée pour mon anniversaire parce que m'offrir un livre...C'est compliqué. Du coup, je complète ma faible collection de bd. Le libraire leur avait conseillé Paroles d'honneur et je comprend pourquoi !
Je n'ai jamais rien lu sur Leïla Slimani et je l'ai donc découverte à travers cet ouvrage. J'ai honnêtement trouvé ça très intéressant et inspirant. J'aime beaucoup sa démarche, celle d'utiliser la littérature pour dénoncer et protester. Le vrai changement commence par l'information.
Je pense que c'est un livre très courageux qui mérite d'être découvert.
Une mention spéciale aux dessins qui sont sublimes !

Il s´agit de témoignages récoltés par Leïla Slimani et illustrés par Laëtitia Coryn.
On y découvre la difficulté des femmes et des hommes à vivre leur sexualité de manière libre en dehors des dogmes et le poids de ceux-ci lorsqu´ils sont suivis.
Une oeuvre authentique, qui dépeint avec une grande bienveillance des individus, forts, fiers, qui se questionnent etse (re)construisent.

Magnifique bd qui donne la parole aux femmes marocaines. J'ai adoré! Bien que le combat pour le respect des femmes et de leurs désirs restent immenses, il y avait de petites lueurs d'espoir au travers ses pages. Lecture grandement recommandée.

Une approche salvatrice de la place des femmes dans la société marocaine et plus généralement dans l'Islam. Une belle découverte qui permet de mieux comprendre comment culture, religion, traditions entravent l'émancipation et les droits des femmes, mais aussi des LGBT.

This is why we need more women in comics and access to graphic novels from all around the world! The variety of experiences is moving of course, but also the variety of faces and bodies is outstanding! To be honest, I wasn't moved my Coryn's style at first, but as I turned the pages and could see the personality and features of each person and the attention to little details I said to myself, you were wrong!
Western culture also has prisons of the mind regarding women's sexuality and place in society, but we judge other societies for being backwards without honestly looking at our culture. I'm just thinking about something I read yesterday in Un autre regard tome 1, that a study showed we tend to see and process images of men as people and women as objects.
Anyway, Morocco seems to be in a period of change, hopefully growth, but in the West we're so convinced of our advances in equality that even though we recognize some inequalities and the need to change we think, well at least we're not like those other backwards cultures. But makeup and high heels are a prison too...

Anyway, Morocco seems to be in a period of change, hopefully growth, but in the West we're so convinced of our advances in equality that even though we recognize some inequalities and the need to change we think, well at least we're not like those other backwards cultures. But makeup and high heels are a prison too...

Ak by niekto z KK knihu chcel, ešte ju mám doma, môžem priniesť na klub. Inak je na Vavilke 24.
Než jste přišla, zrovna jsem se bavila s americkými vědkyněmi. Jedna z nich prý zadala svým studentům, aby jedním nebo dvěma slovy odpovědeli na otázku “ co pro mě znamená náboženství”. A většina mladých žen napsala “strach”.

Vytvořili jsme obraz pomstychtivého Boha a trestajícího náboženství. Od prvních stupňů veřejných základných škol až po madrasy vám všude opakují, že “kdo se nebojí Boha, není dobrý Muslim”. Není divu, že se v takovém kontexu bojíme i sexuality. Výchova dětí se musí od základu změnit, náboženství jim musíme vštepovat jako etiku, která osvobozuje, ne jako upjatou, paušalizující morálku. Podle mě jsou na tom v otázkách sexuality všechna náboženství stejně.
