The WALDO RABBIT series is some of my favorite "rough gems" to be found in the world of independent fiction. Plenty of people have complained about the editing but I'll be honest, I don't think it's ever bothered me in a book after the first couple of pages. The "voice" of the book is what matters and the Waldo Rabbit books have an extremely strong voice.

The premise of the books is relatively similar to my Supervillainy Saga books, Jim Bernheimer's Confessions of a D-List Supervillain, or Michael Gibson's Villains Rule--there's a bad guy who is the protagonist who isn't THAT bad of a guy. The big difference is he's an evil wizard in a fantasy setting and traveling with a cadre of monsters who are even more decent than himself. Waldo needs to get back to his home country with three tame Great Monsters, though, if he's ever going to inherit the Dark Lordship of his family.

I enjoyed this book a good deal more than the second volume of the series which seemed a bit meandering compared to the incredibly strong opening of the first. However, THE RABBIT GREAT AND TERRIBLE does suffer from the same flaw as the second book in that nothing of real consequence occurs to affect the main quest. As Patrick Rothfuss was told about the Kingkiller Chronicle, "Just have him kill the king already." I really want to see Waldo return to his home country and the consequences of the events thereof as I was a big fan of his mother.

The best part of the book is the description of the city which is a fully formed fantasy world with well-designed rulership, culture, and social ills which Waldo throws into chaos through the creation of the "Rabbit" religion as well as his impersonation of a White Mage. I actually liked the fact the White Mages were not shown to be completely stupid this time around even as Waldo has been destroying their reputation across the board.

Waldo is always entertaining with how little he cares about social niceties or the hypocrisies of the "good guys." Indeed, their corruption and loathsome evil makes the big reason why Waldo looks good even if his biggest defense is, "At least I admit it." Unfortunately, if there's no good guys other than Judith and she's someone Waldo just ignores then it becomes a little tedious at times as Waldo seems determined to learn absolutely nothing in his travels.

In any case, I had such an amazing amount of fun, I am going to ignore all of the flaws of the book and give it five stars anyway.

Disappointed in this latest installment

The pacing of this book was horrible. Waldo spends the entire book in the same city basically talking to people with little action. Alice is underused. He accomplished virtually nothing until the last 15% of the book. What occurred in this book should have taken up half of it. I don't see how any of Waldo's quest is going to be accomplished or the reader rewarded if the pace doesn't pick up significantly. Very disappointed this turned out to be the latest installment I've been waiting for.

The main character is bringing this down.

He has shown an abysmal lack of growth. He is still falling prey to the same exact mistakes from book one. He is out here to grow stronger, not stay weak.

Yeah, I just gave up halway. The series got worse and worse with each book. You can't/shouldn't really expect one gimmick (mc's idiocy) to carry your whole series.

A useful idiot. Considering the whole political situation described in the book series, I believe that the term is perfectly appropriate for describing Waldo. Our main character is literally repeating whatever his mother has told him without any input of his own, has very little understanding of what his arch-enemies do (repeating claims of hypocrisy without any practical examples) and is acting in the interests of a land that he is clearly not meant for.

This really has grown old.

I was fine with Waldo acting naive in the first two books. I actually really enjoyed it, and people calling him out on his delusions. Which was made even better, due to his interactions with the local natives and in other reviews already mentioned chemistry between him and his familiars.

Reading this last book is like watching a kid getting hit in the face by a ball that absolutely everyone saw coming except the mentally challenged protagonist. I mean not being capable of recognizing social situations and not seeing why people react on your actions the way they do is often associated with mental deficiencies. There is an actual scene in the book were Waldo does the very opposite of what he was asked to do, and when being faced with the results of his actions acts like a puppy, who is incapable of understanding why are people angry for poo in the shoe.

Point being - Waldo is the main cause of all of his problems and none of the solutions, but as opposed to the first two books, the jokes could not carry the book for me anymore.

I didn't really enjoy it as much as book 2. I liked it, but it was a plateau feeling. I'm hopeful though, because if anything, this feels like groundwork being laid for a glorious book 4! Lots of surprises towards the end, well appreciated Mr. Neslson 👏. I hope to see more of the other players in the next book, Alteroth especially.

3 maybe 3.5, it was good but not a good as the first two book. I would for sure continue with the series but the author needs to find a way to make it new and fresh again to get back into a 4 or more star rating. The characters are still very likable and the series is different and is pretty good.

Okay so I noticed that a lot of the reviews mentioned editing and I just want to throw out there that the audio books are absolutely fantastic. So my review is for the story as well as the audio book.

4 The Love Of The Rabbit Unto You Stars

The Rabbit Great And Terrible is the third book in The Waldo Rabbit series by Nelson Chereta.

I find myself shocked out how twisted one love potion has become. I suppose now Waldo can see the consequences of such ardent affection. That Melissa would become so far from the White Mage we first met to such means to aid her goal is truly surprising.

Kookookahchoo is a hilarious name for a God. Even more fascinating is the destruction wrought by this cult Waldo managed to create mostly by accident and within such a short amount of time. It is, however, sad that his efforts to undermine Avalon with this new religion have not entirely succeeded. But one can not discount the rising of his death count within these pages.

Does the First Quest only measure how many you yourself physically kill? Or is it all of the deaths your actions lead to? Because if it's the latter, then Waldo is already a remarkable Dark Mage.

I can't decide if I feel bad for Cleptus...

I wonder where this Quest will take us next? What disasters will unfold? Which Great Monster has he yet to bring into his service? The third wife we are waiting to be introduced to? I do miss Gwendolyn and her prophecies... Hopefully, we will come to understand more of Lilith's machinations for Alteroth's future.

Loved it.

I'm really. REALLY. GLad the author has not gone FULL harem on this series. The series skirts the edges and pokes fun at the trope, but never does the author force the personalities of the characters to bend to some juvenile fantasy. I had serious doubts about reading this series for that exact reason. It just wouldn't make since for Alice's character to share him willingly. Nor does Waldo's pragmatic nature even allow for an interest of fantasy. Props to the author for creating the characters, creating the circumstances, and then locking them in a room to see what happens

Protagonist is increasing moronic, and needs increasing amounts of plot armor for this to still make sense. The relationship between waldo and Alice is getting worse, the mc's ignorance of anything they are saying to getting grating. He can't be this blockheadly stupid to still go 'what did I do?' when he's been told repeatedly, sometime explained in detail why and what he is saying and doing is weird, but still needs to be told constantly. The MC is selectively dumb that they don't even get context clues from conversations, it's annoying.

"Пътят към Ада е постлан с добри намерения" - една от най-добрите поговорки, която много, много често се оказва вярна в живота, връзките и политиката. Дали обаче пътят към Рая може да е постлан с лоши намерения?

Когато един млад "черен магьосник" тръгва по света да върши злини и да се докаже като достоен наследник на фамилията си, нещата някак успяват никога да не се случват точно така, както той си представя, че трябва.

Read the first 2 and they were fun (first one is the best). I'm kind of fed up with the Waldo though. He should have developed as a person by now. I hate the way he treats Alice in this one (You want to have sex? Oh noooooo, how boooooring. Woe is me). Idk, maybe if I was a dude it would be funnier, but I couldn't get past the first 30 pages of this one.

This book was better than the previous installment, the crass humor was significantly reduced and the storyline actually progressed in some way. This story is definitely not one where you can expect the main character to be competent in the normal ways, instead he manages to move through his quest purely through luck and his bumbling actions. Still a fun read, but definitely not one for everyone.

The hero is an imbecile with thickest plot armor

By now i really hate how Waldo treats Alice and how utterly learning resistant he is. He still acts like a good but really moronic Momma's boy, striving to do everything to makes his mummy happy while constantly acting like a wilful obstinate and ignorant fool.

It is tragicomical to see a protagonist to act like an insufferable sidekick and to root for his demise..

The Rabbit Great And Terrible

This book is escapism and enjoyable. However, there is a deeper reading in this book. Waldo is growing in his power and for a Dark Mage and his interaction with Melissa really sets the tone for the story.

still funny. The book is larger this time but i felt that there was a lot of padding in it, just adding more words but not really going anywhere. Also the author tries to add some drama to the plot that does not really fit well in the story.

This book is fun! Not the best writing, not the worst, but it's fun! It's just an enjoyable read!

I do wish we had gotten a bit more about what was going on with Lilith but overall I liked it.

And now Waldo himself is Chaotic stupid, instead of being of a chaotic stupid background.

Why does the protagonist have to be a bumbling fool for the story to progress, is there anything wrong in people learning, developing.. growing up?.. You know, the main thing Fantasy literature is about?

Then again. Everybody is an idiot in this book.

It gets better in the last 5% of the book, but then you are just left with the feeling that nothing happened.

I felt this story was too short. I know this was to help build the characters for more of the climatic break in the story line but I was hungry for more. Still amazingly written and with sarcastic fantasy humor. Looking forward to the next.

Another great addition to the series, Nelson Chereta still has a hell of a talent for dialogue that usually results people looking at me weird while I titter somewhere in the corner with my kindle.

Melissa was probably my favourite character in this one, her story has so much potential in this now considering whats happened. I'm really looking forward to it.

Also as for our thief, well I hope this doesn't spoil anything but I just wish we'd seen the landing. I'm glad that how Mr Chereta handled things, very satisfying.

If I had anything negative to say was that it could certainly have been longer. Its not short but considering how long the gap was between #2 and #3 I would have like to have seen more. Course I was enjoying it so I'm hardly going to say I wish it was shorter.

I'll be keeping my eyes out for the next one because I will most definitely be buying it. These books guarantee a smile on my face for a day or two while I read them.
