This book is based on the hum,an drama experienced by thousands of people who have been forever marked by the armed conflict in Comuna 13, which is a district of Medellín City, Colombia.It is a revealing testimony of the largest armed confrontation that has ever taken place within the second most important city of the country, which involved all legal and illegal armed groups of that time, and of which the civilian population was the main victim.Comuna 13 of Medellín is a district which is mostly inhabited by humble people with low income, who strive each day to meet their basic needs and to move ahead, even in the most precarious and unfavorable conditions. These are people who were innocently trapped in the middle of the conflict between the armed groups and became victims of different violent acts.This book is a tribute to the innocent victims, to those people who have suffered so much, and who were directly or indirectly exposed to such a traumatic existence. Also, to those who were innocent victims of the bullets in the armed conflict, which extinguished hundreds of lives.

Nada de lo leído en esto libro es ficción, por más increíble que parezca, todo sucedió.

Yoni, integrante del grupo de policía comunitaria de la Comuna 13 de Medellín, luego de contar con la misión de realizar trabajo social en este sector de la ciudad se encontró con la necesidad de contar un poco sobre la historia de este sitio que se ha visto marcado por la violencia y la falta de oportunidades de desarrollo entre sus habitantes.

Así es como a través de una recopilación de historias, muchas difíciles de creer, otras un tanto trágicas y otras con finales de esperanza y luz, Yoni nos cuenta de primera mano las vivencias de los habitantes que han vivido en medio del conflicto armado.

Confieso, que muchas veces se me hizo un nudo en la garganta al leer entre estas páginas, son historias fuertes que te hacen cuestionar la labor del estado y de nosotros como sociedad frente a estas situaciones. Yoni, busca con este libro que las victimas de este conflicto no sean olvidadas y, sobre todo, se tiene la intención, a través de la enseñanza de la problemática (hoy en día, en parte resuelta) evitar que este tipo de actos violentos vuelvan a ser parte del diario vivir de las comunidades.

Es grato saber que al día de hoy puedes visitar ciertas partes de la comuna 13 sin temor a estar en medio del conflicto, por el contrario, te encontrarás con una juventud con ánimos de superarse, de entregar a la sociedad esperanza por medio del arte, la música, el baile y la educación.

If you wander around the San Javier district of Medellin, Colombia, you will find street art, coffee shops, tons of friendly people, and this book for sale everywhere. There was a time when Comuna 13, the area's official designation, was one of the most dangerous places in South America, culminating in several years of intense violence during which leftist militia groups and right-wing paramilitary organizations battled for control. Colombian authorities could not so much as enter the area without being fired upon by military weaponry. This ended in the fall of 2002 with Operation Orion, during which Colombian military forces retook control of the district.

Rendon Rendon's book gives a harrowing account of life and death within Comuna 13 during those years through the testimonies of dozens of people who lived through it, both as innocent bystanders or as willing participants. The writing is clunky, but the stories are heartfelt.

The problem with the book is that the author gives no historical background or larger context to the struggle, and this leaves the reader with too many unanswered questions. How did the militia groups take control in the first place? What were their aims? What conditions allowed such a horrible situation to arise? The author touches on none of this, leaving a book that feels half-finished and lacking any sense of narrative.

Compré este libro luego de mi tour por la Comuna 13 en mis últimas vacaciones. Mi mente no dejaba de pensar en la movida cultural y urbana que presencié allí contrastada con las historias del pasado que me contaban el guía turístico (residente de la Comuna) y las imágenes de los murales. Salí de allí pensando que la Comuna 13 es un ejemplo a seguir para todos los barrios pobres y violentos (favelas), de como la cultura y el turismo pueden salvar a una comunidad de la violencia (pero no de la pobreza). Este libro me permitió leer las distintas anécdotas de cómo se vivía allí antes y durante la Operación Orión, la incursión (para)militar que fue el fin de la guerra de la Comuna 13.

Justo la Operación Orión era lo que más me dio curiosidad de la historia violenta de Medellín, desde que leí un artículo sobre ella en una hemeroteca del Museo Casa de la Memoria, hasta el mural que más me impactó de los que vi en la Comuna 13: unas manos jugando con las casas y arrojando unos dados prendidos en fuego, cuyas caras tenían los valores 16, 10 y 2002, la fecha del inicio de la Operación Orión (16 de Octubre del 2002).

Y ese es el punto débil de este libro. Yo quería aprender de cómo era la vida antes en la Comuna 13, y de por qué la Operación Orión es retratada de esa manera. El libro da algunas estadísticas que no sorprenden mucho en la manera en la que son mostradas. Una anécdota de una persona que fue víctima civil de esos días sí es muy triste, pero aún así necesitaba más como lector.

The book narrates a short timeline of Comuna 13, a district in Medellin, Colombia that experienced a heavy period of violence due to the armed conflict between guerrilla groups, local gangs, and government forces.
The author paints a picture of what the locals experienced during this particular period through testimonials from survivors, armed forces, and even some former guerrilla combatants. He was able to capture the horrors of an already marginalized population and how their lives where impacted by the armed conflict, often as innocent bystanders and sometimes as inevitable actors in crime.
While a vivid and well documented account of events (including the Orion military operation that marked the “beginning of the end” for this conflict), the book only scratches the surface and misses a lot of crucial information. More specifically, I think it misses a lot of context: what drove the conflict at Comuna 13 as opposed to other areas of the city? How did Colombia’s history, and Medellin’s in particular influenced the armed conflict there?

Overall is a good read, albeit a very difficult subject matter. It’s 183 pages, which means you can read it rather quick. I read the English translation, which is quite ok (a couple oddly translated parts here and there, but nothing too jarring). The book has motivated me to learn more about this topic, which I think is a very positive outcome!

Entiendo la intención que el escritor tenpia cuando decidió escribir este libro. Pero faltan tantas cosas y no logra otras muchas.

Primero que todo, no hay un principio o una introducción clara, el prólogo se pudo haber hecho de manera diferente, no siento que haya sido la intoducción a un libro, sino solo a una historia (una que sucede justamente en el primer capítulo), no hay un capítulo que nos diga cómo fue que la Comuna 13 se fundó, por qué era tan dificil que organismos del Estado llegaran al territorio, cómo fue y qué motivó a los grupos armados que decidieron instalarse allí. En mi opinión, falta mcho trabajo previo de investigación, el conflicto no sucedió de la noche a la mañana y así es cómo se entiende en el libro.

Continuaré con esta reseña después, seguiré pensando el libro por el momento.

En mi visita a Medellín, específicamente a la comuna13 encontré este libro testimonial que narra algunas historias propias del conflicto vívido en este sector. Referente a la Operación Orion considero que le faltó profundizar y ser un poco más crítico. La Operación Orion en alianza entre el estado Colombiano y paramilitares que sirvieron de guías con señalamientos sistemáticos sobre la población civil, atrocidades no descritas en el libro como las torturas y desaparecidos en la Escombrera lugar que dio origen al mural "LasCuchasTienenRazón"

Como la historia misma de Comuna 13 , un libro sencillo pero inmensamente revelador. Cuantos sucesos reales que han superado la ficción. Leo este libro luego de un viaje a Medellín...y la fortaleza y esperanza de vida de su gente debe ser un ejemplo inspirador para el mundo entero... sólo hay que ver y sentir la cálida bienvenida que te dan, con esperanza, alegría y un inmenso gusto por servirte..

En mi caso, no conocía mucho del tema del conflicto vivido en esta zona de Medellín, pero el libro brinda un pequeño abre bocas de lo que es el conflicto urbano en las zonas con precariedad de varios recursos , este análisis y/o situación se puede extrapolar a diferentes zonas de conflicto en las que probablemente estén pasando situaciones similares y tratar de implementar lo que sirvió y aprender de lo que tal vez no tanto

A heartfelt collection of accounts from the people who lived through the violence in Comuna 13. It is true that the book lacks context of the wider scale of the situation but for me that’s not the point. This book adds a person each of the tales of violence and tells the stories of the people for whom this was a reality. Not always an easy read but for me, worth it.

'Comuna 13' (District 13), in Medallin, Colombia, was notorious for being the most dangerous district in the world. It was an area ripe with daylight murder, kidnappings, rape and the destruction of many innocent lives. A ghetto shanti-town where people living their lives are caught in the crossfire of guerrillas, rebels and government forces. Foreigners needed to sign an agreement to accept the risk of entering the country.

Flash forward to 2019 when I visited Colombia and Comuna 13 is now a tourist hotspot in Medallin. The walls are adorned with murals of its bloody past and there are frequent tour guides, stores and (what I found most astonishing) escalators! It is completely safe and locals often perform for visitors who come to see.

It is impossible not to see this book for sale in the many tourism stores in Comuna 13 and it is translated into many languages. It is an interesting, occasionally harrowing, read that was written and researched by a Colombian Police Sergeant who was a part of the task force that was responsible for restoring social order.

It is part factual reporting, part account from people who were there and part (very brief) history. Criticism wise, it does suffer from some occasional translation issues, resulting in some usual phrases. Some of the accounts that are recorded do not really add anything or read very bland. As some people have already echoed, it would have benefitted from some more history for context as well. But for a brief overview or starting point regarding the tragic events that occurred here, it is worth picking up a copy of this book while you're in Colombia.
