Six weeks into the apocalypse, would you have hope? From an emergency landing, to a full-blown riot, to a militia gone rogue, Colt and Walter have survived it all. Joining forces, their group heads toward Walter’s cabin and the promise of a new life. But mother nature has other plans. When your life is in danger, can you summon the courage to fight? Madison and Tracy think they’re safe at a cabin in woods. But a chance meeting with a stranger reveals how vulnerable they really are. Faced with an unpredictable threat, the pair must defend their new home, even when the odds are stacked against them. The end of the world brings out the best and worst in all of us. Dangerous wild animals, hidden traps on the road, and violent strangers combine to push everyone to the limit. If Walter and Colt can’t make it back home in time, Madison and Tracy might not survive. It’s a battle against nature and man that only the strong will survive. The EMP is only the beginning. Hope Sparks is book seven in the After the EMP series, a post-apocalyptic thriller series following ordinary people trying to survive after a geomagnetic storm destroys the nation’s power grid.
Well, Hope Sparks, but only After A Whole Bunch of Ass-Kicking.
A decent capstone to the EMP series. I still wish for a bit more of the survivalist basics, but now that I've completed the series, I think Tate's angle is that survival is partly about a mentality rather than skills. Which is probably true, but you still need to figure out how to pick out the safe mushrooms in the wood. That shit is hard. This one felt more like thriller than survivalist, but was well done.
On a related note, I noticed a significant improvement in writing in this story. The characters didn't feel quite as congruent across books --really, make the same mistake again?--but it all seemed to hold together alright. You write seven books, you're gonna get better, right?
“Every day you wake up is another day to celebrate. You’re alive. You’re breathing. Make the most of it. Take the opportunity you’ve been given and run with it. Even in the darkest moments hope still lingers like an unlit match. All it needs is a spark to light. Until next time, this is Walter Sloane. Good luck.”<\i>
I loved this series, it has opened my eyes up to so many things. I'm going to miss reading about my survival family. I came to love all the characters. Thank you Harley for writing this series.
This is the seventh book in this series and I have to say I have not lost any interest in it... I am left wanting more. So much action, plus emotion in this one. Finally, the two groups meet up, and work together to survive. I am really hoping for more of these characters. Such an addictive series.
I have really enjoyed this series, but I think a lot of things were left hanging in this book. I hope the author writes another book because I think this one kinda left us in limbo. There were a lot of suggestions for more story lines and then it just ended
I've been reading Harley Tate for some time. I was well along in this series, but had to break from it for a year or so. Thus, I've restarted the series with Book Six, and now this one, Book Seven.
No persnickety or critical remarks here.
I love the way Tate presents all of the bad, nasty parts of a P-A scenario, with few holds barred. There is meat, grit, conflict and drama. The heroes are clearly good, if imperfect, people. The villians are clearly drawn and believable, but often just trying to survive, even if by perfidy and crime.
These books present the realities of female life during chaotic times--including the potential for rape. Still, the scenes are not overly-detailed and the books overall are clean and contain positive messages.
What I like best about this particular books, are the the author shows us all the bad stuff, the worst of the worst...yet also finds kernals of hope.
From such small acorns can grow mighty oak trees...as well as freedom, safety, liberty, community and thriving lives.
Even as we imagine the worst of times, through books and series such as this...remember to take away the small seeds of hope, as well.
Maybe the best book in the series so far. Great action, I love the characters. They don’t know what to do at times & this feels genuine. The villains were not super human ex-military, more like the bad people that live in my neighborhood. Dangerous yet human. I liked the fact that distances & time mattered to the story. In some books, distance is covered like it is no big deal. In this story, like in real life, it matters. Keep them coming Harley Tate.

First, let me say I really like the series, I'm on book 8 right now. They're entertaining, a quick read, there's much to like about these books. Book 7 kind of dropped the ball though. With fairly short books (most are in the 240 pg range), a whole recap chapter made it even shorter. Since I'm being nit-picky here, one comment for the author: some words are overused. For example: characters are often 'traipsing', or grasping for 'purchase'. Relatively minor points, but a bit annoying at times. One other thing, for anyone reading these books, I advise you to skip over the teasers at the beginning. They almost act like spoilers. Some of the things they told me before I got to chapter 1 are things I'd rather find out while reading the story. Overall though, I like the author's style and I enjoy these books.
Tracy is a loose cannon from the beginning her emotional actions have caused the death of many in her group plus her lack of following orders and putting herself and her emotions first cause others to step into danger. She is a liability and does not contribute filling to the cause of survival. Her daughter is a close second her refusal to stay in the present and reality are a serious cause of concern. They should be kept close to the ranch and not allowed contact with outsiders. Great book. One other problem with content . The seal was going to leave his M4 for his pistol cause others would shoot long distance when they were fighting at the ranch... THE M4 is a close up weapon the ammo it uses are wounding rounds this weapon though it can is not a sniper weapon.
If you've read all of the other books in this series, you should definitely read this one. By far, this is my favorite book in the series. The first three felt slower paced - more about mentally coming to terms with how things are in the world after the EMP. The second three were faster paced and action packed - more about dealing with the initial issues within the world after the EMP, especially in populated areas. This book, the seventh in the series, is a non stop action page turner that covers more than just coming to terms with the world and initial issues after the EMP. Long term survival, being in a rural area, holding on to what you've built, defending what you have, and building relationships in a world without power. Great read, I highly recommend it!
Colt, Dani, and Larkin meet up with Walter Sloane in Northern California. This series is amazing and this seventh book has Walter and Colt meeting up again after their forced flight landing near Eugene, Oregon. Colt, Dani, and Larkin are leaving Eugene and Walter is out gathering for his family back at the Clifford Compound when they meet in Northern California in the forests. So much has happened to all of them including the ones back at the Compound. The novel ends on a note of hope but the group still has a long way to go to survive in this post apocalyptic future. Very good series!
This was a first for me. Reading a post-apocalyptic series. Curiosity spurred my interest.
I wonder sometimes how prepared for a near disaster I would be. As I was reading the series, I gained much insight as to how much preparation it takes to survive as this group did. The characters were easy to relate to. There was never a boring moment. I could not wait to get back to reading what was going to happen next. I did not like that a couple of the books were shorter than the others and I had to keep purchasing books. I wasn't sure I'd like the series so didn't purchase the set.
The characters are real. Story line is great. But the-reason i only gave it 3 stars is. the author has no respect for Christians. His characters make negative remarks about Christians and the Rapture that some believe in. And worse.. He uses the names Christ, Jesus and God as an epithet/ byword and as a wow word. Not cool. He should have some respect for his readers who are Christian as I am..and stop doing this. I want to read his books because they are very good except this one thing. I don’t even mind the curse words he uses but to use my Lords name in vain is not acceptable.
I sure hope this isn’t the end of the series. The two groups finally become one, but the trip is a long and perilous journey. Colt truly becomes Dani’s father, and acknowledges that even though she is not his biological daughter, his feelings for her are just as if she was. The surviving travelers, weary and worse for the wear, help defeat those who would overtake the Clifton’s compound. The journey from Eugene, Oregon to the Clifton’s compound is a deadly journey, filled with danger, heartache, and pain.
An HT. SYFY. Novel (ATEMP. - 7)/Halfway to Make Tahoe an Accident
HT. has. penned a SYFY novel about the group trying to get to Lake Tahoe. Halfway there a car ran into their pickup and caused two deaths and two I juries. They head across country and encounter the preppy Pilot. He leads them to their retreat as a battle is being fought. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I am re-reading this series. But this is the first time I’ve read this book. Last time it had not been written. I’ve got to say I love it as much this time as I did last time. The characters are amazing and the storyline is great. If you want to follow a ragtag group of strangers who come together after a solar flare and fight to survive and become family this is the series for you. Go back to book one and start an amazing journey!
The seventh in the series has a lot of action and emotion. The group comes together and fights for what they have worked for as well as survival. They have lost friends but bounced back to look to the future. Hope is the key and the willingness to not give up. A very satisfying ending in book seven.
I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I am still enjoying this series. Sadly, I have found that many series I read begin to become a bit tedious after the first few books. Not so with this one. With plenty of excitement and likeable characters, I genuinely look forward to each book. Keep up the good work!
I hope this is not the end. This was well written, captivating and full of characters I loved and a couple I hated. One annoyed me. If you want a good story that will keep you hooked this is it! I hope it is not the end. Now I'm going to read everything by this author.
Read all 7 books they were an amazing story of hope, dispare, failure & success. Everyone should read them all and take notice, t r
And take to heart what could happen to our frail existence in our world, maybe then the whole world could become a better place to leave to our children. Thank you Harley Tate.
I really enjoyed this entire series. I thought it was very well written and believable. It is quite the adventure, with several characters that you come to be very fond of. In the end they bring it all together for an actual ending that leaves you feeling good about the entire storyline. Hope Sparks was a very fitting title for this book. Great Job to the author!
I gave this series five stars because it's got some great characters and a great story line. The author keeps its simple with most of the wording, not trying to beat the reader over the head with a massive vocabulary. Easy to read and even easier to get caught up in the characters and their situations.
Book 7 was really great Dani, Colt, Larkin & Walter meet up and they help Walter continue to collect all the edibles in the forest. Colt shot a duck and Lottie ran to retrieve it and bring it back to him. Problems happen at the Clinton compound, something happens to Dani but she survives. Another great book by Harley Tate.
I've read all the previous books in the series, and I'm addicted. The characters feel like someone you've have known all your life, and I look forward to each forthcoming book. Can't wait for book 8.
Having read the whole series, I'm hoping there will be more. The characters are pretty well developed and I really want to see what will happen next. Please, Mr Tate, keep the stories of the new clan alive!
Every time I read another one of the series I can't put it down until I finish. What a wonderful imaginative picture of the horror that could be ahead of us for which almost no one is prepared
Seventh book in the series. Tied and completed the first six.
Great writer! Makes the good guys heroes and the bad hated. Realistic as good people die, not all problems are resolved. A book series that I hated to put down.
I am sad this series of 7 books is now completed for me. The gutsy, steadfast characters just keep putting one foot ahead of them as they strive to live. Love this series!
Finally the two groups merge just in time to fight a small band of drug addicts. I really enjoy the voices that Tate gives each of the characters. There is no stagnation in this series. I look forward to see how the group faces new challenges.
I enjoyed reading this because it is still exciting. I had to find out that Dani was OK. I would recommend it to anyone who like adventure. I was hoping they would join the group at the cabin.
