Jessie Bowman and her best friend, Bree, spend a weekend camping and bird watching. Bree has disappeared in the middle of the night. Jessie is heavily guilt-ridden and tracks down the man she thinks is responsible.

A girl's body found on the bank of the Rio Grande River brings Detective David Temeke and his partner, Detective Malin Santiago to investigate.

The Detectives will have to track down Jessie to get at the truth and bring to light secrets that endanger them all.

Although this is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand alone. However, as always I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. Temeke and Santiago are well drawn, giving the feel of credibility to the story. Gyrfalcon is a rather unique character that everything swirls around.

This well-written, highly suspenseful story goes back and forth with the voices of Jesse and then as seen through the eyes of the detectives. It's full of action, rapidly paced and I found it hard to put it down once started.

Many thanks to the author and TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

The majority of the book is not written from the prospective of the main detective, Temeke, or his partner Santiago. Instead it follows the headstrong and fearless Jessie, best friend of the young female murder victim, as she tracks the suspect and sporadically relays clues to Temeke. However, there is a twist in the end that doesn't fit and muddied the plot for me.

This novel was my introduction to Claire Stibbe’s, David Temeke series. A murder mystery involving teenage girls, a depraved hunter and illicit rare bird traders set in the cottonwoods and suburban environs of Albuquerque, bordering the Rio Grande River.
I am amazed at the depth and extent of the author’s law enforcement and forensics knowledge. Her anatomical knowledge suggests a past study of medicine. I learned that a police investigation of a serious crime involves the assembly of a large team of fact-finders. Each one a specialist, performing his/her function and feeding information into the police data bank that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the ‘perp’.
Not being a follower of the ‘Law and Order’ TV series I also met for the first time, several current colloquialisms: vic = victim, perp = perpetrator.
I was not clear on the location of the scene and Google mapped the area around Albuquerque in New Mexico to better picture the scene, only to remain uncertain of the locations other than the Alameda Bridge.
I especially enjoyed the references to the falcons and other birds of prey.
The main character is not Temeke, but Jessie Bowman; a 17-year-old, rather plain girl raised a tomboy by her widower ex-USMC father. She does much of Temeke’s work and we meet up with him only briefly in the early part of the story: coming into prominence during the final 20% of the pages
I found the book rather under developed, yet overworked in description. The author is given to writing flowery expositions that make for fine literary reading, but have little to do with promoting the story or its pace. An examples of which is as foll: As the action is ‘cranking-up’, a SWAT team is readying itself for deployment and the pace is slowed by a physical description of a team member preparing his rifle for action: a character with no speaking part in the rest of the story.
Clearly there is ‘something-going-on’ (or not going on) In Temeke’s and Malin’s personal life, something of a 3-way non-affair with Matt, another officer. We are told about this, but shown little, or anything, of it at work in the story. I might well have picked this up had I read the earlier books before coming to this one
I would have preferred a stronger plot with greater character expression and less general exposition.
I enjoyed moments of excitement and wonder at the police work. Will I read the next in the series? Yes, but only after first picking up more of the background of principal characters in the series by reading the earlier books.

This is a pacy read which I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a lot going on with a teen murder and the theft of rare birds to keep Temeke and Santiago on their toes. The disappearance of a second girl initiates a chilling cat and mouse game played out between killer and prey and for once Temeke is playing catch-up. As the story develops over a short time period you get the sense of a ticking clock in the background ranking up the tension and there are more than a few nail-biting ‘look behind you’ moments.
As with previous books in this series, those who enjoy police procedurals will appreciate the insights into how crime scenes are processed. I found it enthralling and balanced well with the flow of the story without slowing the action.
Temeke and Santiago share a wonderfully abrasive chemistry and in ‘Easy Prey’ we see further development of their characters both professionally and personally. A love interest for Santiago doesn’t go unnoticed by Temeke...which will be of interest to all those readers, like me, who are watching the ‘will they won’t they’ play out. I particularly liked the fact that teen lead Jessie isn’t a ‘prom queen’ heroine but instead, despite being gifted, she’s considered the least likely and least popular of her peers. The offspring of an overbearing soldier father, she’s struggling with low self esteem and the seemingly impossible task to live up to her father’s expectations. I found myself rooting for her as she battles against enormous odds.
A truly twisty plot, tense and suspenseful action and a thrilling climax.
Wholly recommended.

As a fan of Detective Temeke and his partner Malin Santiago, I was delighted to see a new book in the series. Easy Prey features a fascinating character, Jessie Bowman, who embodies the indestructible illusion of youth. When her best friend, Brianna Ortiz, disappears from their tent while on a camping trip, Jessie is thrown into a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a deadly opponent.
Waking in the tent to discover Bree is gone along with a gun Jessie had brought for protection, the seventeen-year-old sets out to find her. The girls had been searching for a rare bird, an arctic gyrfalcon, and had seen a gray-haired man with a shotgun who they suspected was hunting the same bird.
While Jessie searches for Bree, she notifies the police, drawing Temeke and Santiago into the case. The story is told both through Jessie’s eyes as well as Malin’s and Temeke’s. Stibbe does an excellent job of capturing the innermost thoughts of the young girl; her guilt about an argument she had with Bree before her disappearance, her determination to learn what has happened to her friend, and her ability to pursue the man she suspects has kidnapped Brianna.
Stibbe has a knack for describing police procedures with an intensity that carries the reader along, comfortable in the knowledge of what is happening and why things are done in a particular manner. Her ability to switch between Temeke’s detective vision and Jessie’s teenage view provides a well-rounded picture of the events.
Perhaps the most disturbing character in the book is Jago, a sick individual who leads Jessie on a chase that could end in her death. This is not a book for the squeamish. It is violent, frightening, and will keep the reader up well past bedtime. I truly could not set it down.
There are other important characters in the story, not the least of which is the gyrfalcon. Kept by Malik Shamoun who owns a bird sanctuary, the falcon is the focal point of the tale. It is this falcon that precipitates much of the activity, from its disappearance to the hunt by Jago, and the eventual discovery of its importance.
There are understories which are as intense as the main plot. Stibbe ties it altogether neatly at the end, leaving her reader satisfied and eager for the next Temeke adventure. As with all the Detective Temeke books, this can be read as a stand-alone. However, I encourage readers to start with the first one and move forward. They are too good to choose just one favorite.

Gorgeously Written, and cleverly planned out!

I adored this Book, despite this being my first venture into the authors work and this being the 5th book in her Crime Series.

There were several Characters to come to grips with, but this was handled in an effective and interesting way. Each Character was introduced individually, and they were very different to one another.

Jessie was strong, brave and interesting to say the least, and I loved the fact that this story isn’t a simple “Who Did It” type of story. Instead, we find out very early on who did it, the subject is about what Jessie is getting up to, and why.

The story line is very individual and exciting whilst remaining easy to follow, and relaxing to read. I flew through it, and enjoyed the vast variety of emotions the tale evoked.

There were several interwoven storylines that melded beautifully, and the way the story comes together is fun and individual. Add in the Birds and stunning descriptions, and this is certainly a Book I will happily Reread!

This was an absolute pleasure to read, and I can’t wait to read the previous ones in the series!

I so love the relationship between Temeke and Malin. It's very much a will they, won't they and, on its own, is capable of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. I've never read a thriller based around the illegal sale of birds of prey, so it was a very interesting subject, and I learned a lot of new facts and vocabulary. The amount of research Ms Stibbe must have undertaken is mind boggling, so all credit to her. The story is entirely based around Jessie, who is a very unusual and unique young woman. Certainly a refreshing change to read about a heroine who doesn't have long, blonde, swishy hair, legs up to armpits, eyes of the deepest blue etc etc! Instead we followed a real person, chunky thighs and all. Finally, one up for those of us with thunder thighs! Of course, just when you think you've read the denouement, there's a twist! Ms Stibbe never lets her readers down! A thoroughly enjoyable and thrilling read, which I am delighted to recommend.

Jessie and her friend Bree go camping in New Mexico but in the morning Bree is missing. Jessie is a pretty self sufficient teen who then sets out to find her friend.

Bree's body is found and the detective in charge, Detective Temeke and his team are trying to solve this murder and also find Jessie. Jessie is on the trail of the killer and keeps Temeke up to date with everything she finds out by phone but will not give up her quest to make sure the killer does not get away.

This story involves the illegal trade in rare falcons and is detailed about the birds and the equipment used to handle them very amazing, would love to see them since reading this book.

This book drew you in from start to end, a real page turner with lots of action and a twist or two.

Loved it, and will now try and read the rest in the series, a great stand alone book.

Really? Ridiculous scenario. But you gotta know how it ends. Still ridiculous. 17year old girl some places described as fat then as athletic. Gun toting.but doesn’t want to use it on the guy she is chasing. She is chasing down the guy who killed her best friend, who she had no idea was sleeping with this other guy whose involved. She is an avid outdoor person who gets distressed when while she is sneaking around the bad guys house (while he is there!), going through files and rooms, and there isn’t any toilet paper in his bathroom! She goes two days without her phone battery dying though she is taking and sending pictures and videos to the police. The main detective for which the book is a one in a series keeps calling everyone “love” (he is British). Just I could go on and on. Good thing it was free!

The beautifully written descriptions of the scenery and the birds in this book made me want to visit New Mexico (on the proviso no murderers are on the loose of course) and it was lovely to read a down to earth female character who chose to fight her own battles (although I did feel this was a touch foolhardy at times) and did not need a man to get her out of the tricky situations she found herself in.
Each character was well introduced and the relationships between them (particularly the detectives) were intriguing and at no point did I feel that I had missed something critical by not having read the first four books in this series. It is a clever writer who can build her characters book on book but still manage to make them stand alone reads with no back story required.

As this is book five in a series, I wish I had read the previous books. I could follow the plot well enough, but I feel that I missed some of the background of the relationships. It is fast paced and really engaged me in the race to save the young girl and to solve the crimes committed involving the birds of prey. The author certainly knows how to build up suspense and how to deliver information to assist the reader in their understanding of rarer topics.

This is my first book by this author.
The premise is great, with young Jessie determined to avenge the death of her friend.
She keeps him within her sights while Detective Temeke tries to find her.
The bird sanctuary forms the backdrop and is a part of the crime.
I found it a good read but there were a lot of things that were elaborately described that I didn't find too relevant

Slow

I had a hard time finishing. Started and stopped several times. It was set in a city I knew well but the way it was written it was as if the writer had just drifted through Albuquerque and New Mexico once and decided to set the story there but didn't really know the city and her people.
Don't think I'll try any others

My favorite Detective Temeke story so far. I enjoyed the addition of other key characters in this story, especially Jesse. While she definitely has some teenage traits, she isn't some weak girl who needs rescuing.

Terrific read!

This book had me hooked from the start. It had high tension that kept me reading into the night. I liked the change in perspective in some chapters. It helped me see into character's minds. Sometimes it did seem a bit wordy, but this was an emotional read.

Easy Prey

The book was long and dark. The victim keeps doing stupid things that don’t make sense to the danger she’s in. I didn’t really enjoy the book. Perhaps that’s just me.

Keeps up the quality - the best yet!

I was curious as to how the Temeke-Malin partnership would develop in this book and I wasn’t disappointed! I’m already hooked on the series and often authors of detective novels rely on loyalty, while running out of real inspiration. Not so, Claire Stibbe! I thought this was the most inventive story so far and I found the trade in stolen birds of prey fascinating. The relationship between the two young women, one being the murder victim, did keep me guessing and the way the pieces of the puzzle fitted together at the end was very satisfying. I thought the award-winning ‘Night Eyes’ was my favourite of the books but I think ‘Easy Prey’ just edges ahead.

Two best friends. One deadly secret.

Something dark and brooding stalks the mysterious Bosque nature reserve. Bird watchers fall prey to the menace and thefts of rare falcons are on the rise. But it is the body of a murdered girl discovered on the banks of The Rio Grande River that eventually brings Detectives Temeke and Santiago onto the trail.

This was a very enjoyable read with likeable characters.  Even though this is my first book by this author and it is book 5 I was still able to read and enjoy it. I liked Jessie and how temeke was with her. Especially the end. He was brilliant.  4*.
