This is a story of Asa, a person with magic who escaped her clan and lives among ordinary humans. There is a certain palpable melancholy about her character, which she fights off by helping people during the day in the ER and supernaturnals at night at her own clinic. She is on the run, hiding from her past and her people and assumed name Amy. She is ridden with guilt based partially on incomplete information and partially on ignorance on her part.
The build up is slow and thorough, and we get to know Asa as a person. Moreover, a fascinating hidden world of supernatural creatures emerges. Asa is some kind of human mage and possesses powerful healing magic. Like most of her kind, she possesses the ability to tap into the Source and apply Truthsight. The book gradually explains all magic related matters.
There was a moment when I thought I was going to be overwhelmed with sadness and the tragedy of Asa's situation. The author brilliantly created an atmosphere of despair, sadness, guilt and hopelessness, and on the other hand, hatred, resentment, mistrust and anger. With all of that, there is still an incredible amount of mystery, the author slowly unveils bit by bit. The world building is impressive.
There is conflict and betrayal, there is romance, there are different kinds of magic and there is resolution. There are numerous interesting characters in the story, but Asa is the one that stands out most, and no necessarily in a positive way. Her kindness, compassion and sacrifice know no limits, and all of those nearly killed her many times. Still she persevered. On the one hand, I was impressed with Asa, on the other hand, I was just annoyed. She is a person with such incredibly negative sense of self-worth, and such sense of incredible value of everyone else, it was painful to read at times. This is not my favourite kind of the main character and I did not get attached to her, however, some of the other characters do not suffer from her afflictions, and they are quite amazing.
I will continue reading the series in spite of the main character, and because of other great characters and the incredible world the author created. I can only hope that the next story will provide Asa with less opportunities to sacrifice herself for any random someone that she deemed more important than herself. Actually, I am quite curious to see whether she evolves. The story continues in Winter's Mage.
