This was a little more sad than I anticipated. I think that I thought that this was going to be a soft, life sapphic romance, but it feels like things might get a little sad as we delve deeper into the plot. I had trouble telling two characters apart which is frustrating when reading manga. The only clear distinction was their hair length and that took me a few pages to realize. Overall, it was a good read and I’m looking forward to continuing the series.

it was very cute with sad undertones, which is exactly my kinda thing. the aquarium club was so adorable (especially the salamander) and the girls were likeable, too. the art was soft and pretty. i'd like to read more in the future

A super slow and super low key romance. The art is so generic I had a little trouble telling a couple of the characters apart. You really have to watch closely for the little ribbon over Koyuki's ear or Kaede's slightly longer hair. It's not bad, but it just doesn't do much to stand out.

Honestly I feel bad giving this a two star cause it's not bad or anything, but it was just okay. It was kind of boring tbh. I don't know it's just not cute enough for the awkwardness to be endearing and the emotional stuff isn't really enough. I have two more volumes checked out so I'm going to keep reading, hopefully it gets more interesting.

“You don’t have to just grin and bear it.”
Oh my god, this was extremely stinking cute. I am BEYOND charmed. Konatsu moves to a small seaside town and starts at a new school. She's really shy, lonely, and nervous about making friends. One of her first encounters is with Honami. Honami is the leader of the aquarium club, and seems to be really popular and universally well-liked, but it turns out she's shy and anxious as well. This first volume is just about their growing friendship, glimmers of their crushes on each other, and showing both their struggles with fitting in. It's SO CUTE. Ridiculously so. I caught myself smiling from ear to ear, laughing at jokes/situations that probably weren't that funny, but because of the characters and the situation, I just found it so charming. (Like, that scene where Honami is chasing the pelican that stole her fish, and bumps into Konatsu, LOL.) Both girls are utter sweethearts, and I can't wait to see them grow. We got little glimpses of other friendships, and the other people in their lives. Both their relationships with their fathers look like they're going to be important. And omg, I really loved the salamander. The way it was drawn was SO CUTE. All of the art is really great; the style isn't very unique, perhaps, but it was still nice to look at. The messaging and the metaphors about loneliness were pretty heavy handed, but I didn't mind. The way it's bringing the girls together makes my heart warm. I especially liked Honami, because she seems to be really cool and have it all together, but she's also a nerd baby who talks to marine animals and has no idea how to handle her crush. :') I just liked this SO MUCH, and I'm really happy that I borrowed it on a whim. Hopefully I'll continue it soon.

January 4, 2025pretty generic yuri wrt to plot and art, but the aquarium club setting is cute. would be surprised if these two even kiss on the mouth by the series end — which is not bad in and of itself, nothing wrong with some PG yuri, it’s just, well it’s always PG yuri isn’t it? might read a few more volumes, might not 🤷

This was sweet start for a story with some quite unexpected sad undertones to it. The story is about Konatsu Amano who moves into a small seaside town after her father moves overseas for a job. She starts at a new school and she has some trouble with it because she struggles with change. On her first day in her new hometown, she meets Koyuki, the only member of the aquarium club.
Quite enjoyed this! It wasn't at all what I was expecting but I feel like that only made me more intrigued about what is yet to come.

a budding relationship between two girls who also happen to be the only two members of the school aquarium club. their relationship develops around an elusive salamander and mutual confusion and insecurity about their feelings towards each other.
unfortunately, it was difficult to tell the characters apart and i was expecting more complex emotional and narrative development. it's a pleasant, unoffensive, lighthearted read.
i don't think i'll be reading volume two but i appreciate that makoto hagino based the aquarium club on a real school's aquarium club.

I'm in love with the drawing and the author's stroke!
Above all, I'm in love with Koyuki, she's the cutest!
The story is about Koyuki and Amano.
Amano is a girl who had to go live with her aunt when her father accepts a job in another country.
New in town, she enters her future school when she sees an announcement of an "event."
When entering the aquarium of the school she meets with Koyuki, a senpai that participates in the club responsible by the aquarium.
Later that same day, she meets Koyuki on the beach and the two of them approach each other.
The story is very cute and to see Koyuki, so reclusive and shy, developing feelings for Amano is very cute.
Anyway ... Koyuki isn't the cutest !?

A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow is a charming, slice of life manga about Konatsu, new student to a school located in a seaside town and Koyuki, sole member of the aquarium club! These two girls instantly connect and the sweet bond they form over the course of Vol. 1! Featuring slow-burn, yearning, alongside very wholesome moments, this is a fantastic start to a new manga series!
There's a simplicity and feeling of melancholy to this manga that makes it a very emotional (+ happy) read, seeing these two meet each other, navigate their own feelings and become closer!
Konatsu Amano moves to the seaside town of Nagahama to stay with her aunt after her father gets a job overseas. But in reality, there's a feeling of loneliness she's carrying with her. But when she sees her new high school is having an open house for the aquarium, she finds herself instantly drawn to Koyuki Honatsu, the club's leader and only member.
As Konatsu tries to navigate her new school, she finds herself running into Koyuki and the girls continue to bond. As each student is required to join a club, Konatsu wonders whether joining the Aquarium Club is a good idea. The author brilliantly delves into the inner complexities of our heroines, the complicated feelings they have for each other, and the underlying sense of loneliness they have.
Konatsu instantly finds a friend in Hirose, the bubbly, extroverted classmate who gets her to see the aquarium in the first place! She's just a really fun character and seeing Konatsu's inner conflict with wondering whether to accept or decline her offer to join Hirose in the Home Ec club turned out to be very funny. I can't wait to see all 3 of these girls bond even more!
Hagino builds such a fascinating slice-of-life school atmosphere at Nanahama High School with the various clubs and just making it a very unique place to be! I liked the inclusion of having the club involvement be mandatory for students, it just added more to the distinct atmosphere of Nanahama.
The romance is very slow burn, but also very soft and sweet! The little moments really take over the whole scene, whether its small hand holds, sharing food, or just the longing gazes.
There's such wonderful imagery and metaphors woven throughout this first volume, especially when it comes to salamanders and how it relates to Konatsu and Koyuki specifically. Its a beautiful message about the two allow each other to escape their loneliness despite this sense of being trapped and isolated. Though Koyuki feels more of a weight from expectations of those around her and in turn, she never really feels understood. All the details about the marine life are also beautifully woven into the series as well, can't wait to see how the author builds on it!
One of my favorite moments was on page 36 when the aquatic background takes over the scene as they hold hands on the beach! We see how much they mean to each other with every moment they have whether together on page or just thinking about each other, its very cute!! <3
Story-wise, although its definitely slower-paced, its very much character-driven and if your looking for a soft, SAPPHIC slow-burn romance, READ THIS SERIES! The writing is also just so good and there were definitely many beautiful lines that show the feelings that Konatsu and Koyuki have for eachother.
The paneling and artwork are perfect, allowing for a slow, introspective view of the story! The inclusion of aquatic elements like the ocean, marine animals, all add to the special world that these two have carved for themselves and its really beautiful.
Tropical Fish has easily become one of my new favorite series, Konatsu and Koyuki are just so adorable!! I can't wait to see where their story is headed! Overall its a 4.5, but will expand slightly in my full review.

Ah, incredibly charming, this. Lovely art (some excellent reaction shots and SD work here) and a cute pair who need a little more fleshing out but are clearly very good for one another. Quite a few very cute moments throughout.
It’s interesting how the two of them have issues but the type of issue is quite different. One is very socially anxious and has a hard time talking to new people, the other does not but clearly has a hard time with her feelings. I love that we can really see their relationship developing internally on both sides, but the actual expression of it between them is so far a slow burn. It’s a nice technique.
Throw in a potential complication on the romance front (from what seems like a source that just has too much energy rather than malicious intent for once) and a lot of fun aquarium stuff and this series is off to a really solid start.
Bonus points for not being set in a girls school or on Planet No Men - it makes it a bit more realistic, even if the guys rightly don’t enter into it much.

A supersweet shoujo-ai manga featuring plenty of cute aquarium animals and sweet and adorable scenes. I had tons of fun reading this though I did think Honami was a bit too stiff and awkward for my liking. She didn't even want to eat a small candy because of the school rules, really? I love the connection these two girls have and I am rooting hard for them to get together. I love the idea of an aquarium club, and yay for Koyuki. The art is adorable. I will definitely be continuing this manga.

I enjoyed it but the two characters are a bit too similar. Both are kinda shy, awkward, and like aquarium.
Overall, it is a very typical yuri manga: blushing and subtext-y. One girl is older, but thankfully it avoids "popular oneesama" trope. Nothing about the story stood out to me though.

Cute, but I feel like I’ve met iterations of these character types in other shoujo-ai/yuri manga. What does stand out is the use of the aquarium as a setting and talking piece.

But, there's something drawing these two together, so Konatsu joins the club. She also starts to become friends with bubbly Kaeda, who tries to recruit Konatsu to the Home Ec club. To prepare for the monthly open house of the Aquarium Club, Koyuki gives Konatsu a crash course on some of the fish the public will ask about. Konatsu can't answer everything, to her shame, but she does answer an enthusiastic little boy's question about salamanders, and they both get their first glimpse at the aquarium's newest member, a Cloud Salamander Konatsu affectionately named Koyuki because of their similarities.
This story is super sweet, and the shy affection the girls have towards each other whispers of a more serious relationship in future volumes. Kaeda is a pretty shallow character, so hopefully her air-headedness gets developed more as well. The main thing this story has on other romances is the setting being in a high school aquarium (which is apparently a real aquarium in Japan).
The illustrations are rather pretty, but there are times that it is hard to tell Kaeda and Koyuki apart. Other than their hair cuts, the could be the same.
Overall, this is a nice first volume to bring in readers who are looking for a different setting for a romance.

(The review is in English but I read the German manga - also I struggle to rate Mangas/Comics in general so my rating is usually higher than it might be otherwise)
Really cute and the thought of having an aquarium/ocean centred student club at school with actual aquariums and rescue animals (if I understood that right) is crazy to me (especially because it actually exists, apparently??)
Not gonna lie I confused two of the main characters which doesn’t speak for the drawing style (though I am not that good with faces, especially when they’re drawn in non-realistic styles the way a lot of Mangas and Comics are).
Generally very soft, a bit sad, I wanna protect all of them and I hope the salamander and the tortoise are happy.
Oh! And I appreciate the editors note at the end of the version I read because it explains a Japanese story ("The Salamander”/“Confinement” by Masuji Ibuse) mentioned in several scenes in simple terms. It also compares it to a story a lot of German students might have read in school the same way The Salamander seems to be taught in Japanese schools a lot, too. (The German story it was compared to: “Demian” by Hermann Hesse)

I wasn't sure what to expect when it comes to this manga.
This is a cute Yuri manga that takes place with two girls in the aquarium club. I think reading this manga has shown to me how much I enjoy soft stories about people learning about something new and moving to a new place. Also I appreciate the pacing that goes into the relationships and how happy-go-lucky it is. The only issue I had was that there was some miscommunication involved and there was a big space cadet.... Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars

This is a really cute manga and first volume. I really like the relationship between Konatsu and Koyuki. It's awkwardly silly and had me chuckling a few times. The concept of an aquarium club is also neat and super unique. I always love reading manga and watching anime that focus on a topic I have little to no knowledge about. It does have some silly tropes from other rom-com-esc stuff, like a character getting flustered over an indirect kiss, but it's done well enough that it wasn't all that annoying. Excited to read volume 2!

So this was sweet. I really enjoyed the look we got into both characters' heads and I felt that I connected with them well. I gave it 3 stars because while I really enjoyed it it didn't blow me away and I didn't immediately have to buy the next volume. I will read it because I want to see where the story goes and it'll be interesting to see how their relationship develops. The art was gorgeous!

Ein Manga über zwei Mädchen einer Aquarien-AG! Er war ganz niedlich, die bisherige Story reizt mich aber nicht genug, um ihn weiter zu verfolgen. Tatsächlich ging es nur sehr schleppend voran, fast schon langweilig. Der Manga war OK, aber mehr leider nicht. Dabei hätte ich bei dem Aquarienthema gern mehr Sterne gegeben… 🥲
