Chris is a man adrift, sucked lifeless by a dead end job, his dreams of music all but gone. His only solace is found in taking his boat out on the ocean for a few hours, where he can drift in peace and solitude, undisturbed by the life dragging him down.
Deep beneath the sea, the lonely and inquisitive Ren looks up toward the surface he's forbidden to breach...
The first edition of this book was published in November 2013 as part of Less Than Three Press's Fairytales Slashed Volume 5 anthology.
I thought this was a lovely re-telling of A Little Mermaid. I found Ren's genuine interest about the human world, during the part where he first transformed into human but couldn't speak, to be very engaging. I LOVED Ren ... he was wonderful!
Chris, I wasn't so sure about. He was being a bit dismissive at Ren at first, even thinking that Ren was a slight burden. The process of him thinking of Ren as friend to fall in love with Ren was a bit unconvincing -- plus I thought Chris could do more groveling near the end.
The part with Vanessa's fate was just okay for me -- not sure if it was a fair punishment, but it didn't bother me much.
Yes, I rounded it up because while there were things that I disliked, this novella also made feel satisfied and happy. Considering my current reading mood (and slump), it was an IMPORTANT feeling!
This was a light enjoyable re-telling of the Little Mermaid. It is a pretty basic story with a bare-bones world without alot of world building. As I breezed through the book I liked watching Ren explore the world above more than anything else. There were plot holes and honestly not of relationship building in the book but with the length it wasn't unexpected.
