Tormented by the rash decision that almost killed her, the king now believes that he’s saving Aria from the clutches of the manipulative prince. Aria is much more than the average, eighteen-year-old girl who wanted to find the cure for cancer. She’s now a deadly Archangel warrior and the future queen of the angels and gargoyles if only she can manage to break her lover’s curse and keep the Vampire King at bay. What would you give up for true love?
Anna Santos is a USA Today Bestselling Author who likes to write about shifters, vampires, angels, mermaids, fae, and occasionally humans.
Anna always keeps her readers on their toes with adrenaline-fuelled adventures, genuine characters, strong female leads, and romantic plots.
When she’s not writing, she’s probably reading or spending too watching TV shows. As an introvert, home is her safe harbor. Yet, she’s known for leaving the house from time to time and having her family throw a party because they haven’t seen her for days. Then they ask her how many books she wrote while gone, assuming that writing must be super easy.
Anna guarantees that it’s not, but she never wanted to be anything else. Unless there’s a possibility of being a powerful supernatural being in an awesome world where unicorns and fairies are real. Then, she would probably go there and never come back.
Not much of a plot. Poor character development. Cedric and [I forgot the heroine's name] were shallow and boring characters. Good start on the world building, but it wasn’t explored enough. I liked the angel-gargoyle twist on the beauty and the beast tale, but this work focused too much on how pretty the characters were. I wanted to see character exploration.
I’ve been reading from a list of angel novels, and so far, it’s one disappointing book after another.
This book was bad. Typically it takes a lot for me to really dislike a book enough to leave a bad review but it was that bad.
The dialogue was childish and didn't make any sense at all. The story itself was unbelievable. The world was also equally unbelievable. This book seems like it was trying for "adult" but failed miserably. It made me think someone who is really young wrote it with the aspect of trying to sound like an adult.
All in all it was a complete fail. But the dialogue was really a deal breaker. It was rough and didn't flow and was just BAD. I can't explain much more without going into detail but if you read this book you'll understand immediately what I am saying.
I most definitely would not recommend this book to anyone.
"Captive" by Anna Santos. I absolutely loved this story-line and plot. It's full of my favorite Shifters, Vampires, and Angels. OH, to have found your fated-mate then be ridiculed and rejected, while being saved by saved by you second chance mate. WOW what a toss around for Aria. Cedric had been Aria's savior while Philippe had beaten her down and rejected her. It was astounding how Anna had inserted the small amount of uncertainty between Cedric and Philippe. The story-line had me hanging by my fingernails. Great characters full of personality and awesome background building through the stories progression. I really loved "Captive."
First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Holy shiznet!!! This story was so amazing, I couldn't put it down. Aria was a cute, nerdy young girl. Now, OMG, she's a little spitfire. Phillipe, is a jerk. Yes, he's a vampire, hit & sexy, but still a jerk. I have to admit though that at times I feel bad for him. Cedric, is hot & sweet. But he has his jerky moments too. I look forward to the next story. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
The story is intriguing, fast paced and hard to put down, but it was crude and the "F***" word was used quite often. Plus the characters seemed a bit immature which may change in books to come. What bothers me most though was the profanity and the sexual crudeness.
This is a great story and well written. I have read the first and second book but can go no further. Like I said the story is great but I can't put up with Aria anymore. I have never disliked a character as much as this. I feel sorry for the men involved with her.
Captive by Anna Santos is her second book in The Angels of Paris Chronicles. In this book we are introduced to a new character, Aria, and some familiar characters from the previous book. Aria has just turned 18 and is going to Paris for a few weeks as a birthday gift from her parents. She'll be heading off to college and she has wanted to experience Paris all along. She wants to be a scientist but her parents are both musicians and hope that she will change her mind and follow in their footsteps. While in Paris and staying with her aunt and uncle, she attends a party with her cousin. She really didn't want to go but they insisted she go with her cousin. What Aria doesn't expect is to encounter a beautiful vampire and her reaction to him. She becomes fearful when he enthralls her and then says some pretty bizarre stuff to her. She's hurt and when he turns her over to his men, their intentions are less than pure. In her fear of them she jumps off the boat into the river, heartbroken and scared. She's rescued by the gargoyles and claimed. Now the time is ticking for all of them. Aria must now decide if she will give her heart totally to Cedric, who rescued her and claimed her or allow the vampire who nearly killed her back in. I absolutely loved the first book, Save Me, and when I saw how this book followed the same form I was beyond thrilled. This book jumps between Cedric, Aria and Philippe. We read the story from each of their perspectives. I like that Aria is a bookworm and focused on her studies rather than boys. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders but then I find it annoying when she wants to over analyze situations and be so doubtful. I'm so happy that this story focuses on Cedric and how he is able to find his soul-mate. It's beautiful. I love that he is giving his all, but that he still has his flaws. The story flows really well between the characters and I like that there were no dull moments in this entire story. The only things that I honestly didn't like was how Aria is fighting things between her and Cedric. She knows what he means to her and that he was the one who rescued and accepted her but yet she is allowing herself to be swayed by Philippe when he shows up. She is a naïve girl, because she's not worldly, but one would think that even common sense would step in at certain moments and guide in her making smarter choices. Philippe is supposed to be a centuries old vampire but even he acts like an immature teenager half the time. He's supposed to be smart and in control of the Paris region but he doesn't always act like he's really thinking things through. Some of the situations are obvious and it seems a bit ridiculous that the characters proceed into it so blindly. I just honestly got tired of the back and forth of Aria entertaining Philippe. Overall I really enjoyed this book. It has a good pace and kept me engaged while reading it. The ending leaves me wanting more and to know what happens with Aria, Cedric and the others. I'm curious to see what Philippe will do since it appears that he just might have a conscious but I guess I'll have to wait and read what happens next. Definitely a book worth picking up and reading. Looking forward to the next book for sure. So, if you enjoyed Save Me then I recommend moving forward and picking up this book as well. I'm rating it 4 out of 5 stars.
Ok I am calling a halt at 20% because I can already tell this is not for me. Normally I wouldn’t rate a book unless I had read at least half but this was so bad. So, so bad with creepy stalker ‘love’.
Heroine is a super sweet, innocent and naive 18yr old which is kind of an annoying type but I could have got past that. What I can’t get past is the 2 completely horrid guys sides of our forthcoming love triangle. On one side we have creepy, cruel vampire guy who uses women for food & sex then wipes their minds who compels his soulmate (our heroine) to follow him so he can viciously reject her thus breaking the bond before passing her off to his creepy minions to be gotten rid of. Sure he didn’t actually mean for them to (attempt to) rape her before disposing of her but that is what he and his kind basically do every evening so he can hardly claim surprise at the attempt. Now this should be enough knock him out of the running completely but then we wouldn’t get the threatened love triangle from the blurb so I presume they will still be drawn to one another. Then we have guy number 2. He saves her from drowning, so he should be the good guy right? Well you would think so except that he saves her and flies her off to his lair where he plans to keep her for 31 days so he can make her love him. Because abduction and imprisonment are soo sexy (yes that was sarcasm in case you were wondering). Sure I get that he needs her to fall in love with him to break his curse so he wont be turned to stone. But while I understand wanting to woo her the way he goes about it is DEEPLY disturbing. He is super stalker creepy with the whole ‘Hello girl I have never met before. I am Cedric, the angels chose you as my mate so now we are married and you will love me. So creepy. Ugg, unless the heroine plans to reject both of them and lead a human rebellion to wreak bloody havoc on both vampires & gargoyles I am not interested in reading further. Then I decide to skim a bit further (I just can’t seem to help myself – it’s a sickness I know) and love interest no 2 - creepy stalker (as opposed to love interest no 1 - creepy abuser) thinks that this is an ok statement to make at their first meeting “I think you are more than suitable to bear my baby. You please me alot.”And do you know what our stupid heroine does in response to that delightful statement- is it kick him the junk? No. Is it run screaming? No. Does she smile placatingly at the crazy man while backing away slowly. No. She fucking giggles. That’s right, she giggles and asks him to take her site-seeing. I'm out.
The concept to this was instantly compelling but I'm not as enthusiastic about the book. This is a true ya book in that the characters act much like a bunch of very stereotypical ideas of teenagers/young adults; though the vampire is centuries old and we're never really told how old the Angel/gargoyle is.
Aria is on vacation with her uncle and his family in Paris where her spoiled cousin takes her to a fancy yacht party hosted by vampires.
Philippe is the King of the vampires and a spoiled brat. After discovering that the mousy Aria is his mate, he rejects her and breaks their bond because he doesn't want to be tied down to a mortal. After his men then try to rape and kill her, she jumps into the river. But after learning she's still alive and now the mate of his mortal enemy, he wants her back. Including going to the ultimate of evil where he learns to get her back he'll damn her soul.
Cedric; former gargoyle, Prince of the angels and gargoyles; is the one to save Aria and is determined by the Angels on high to be her new mate. Apparently they can only mate to those rejected by their match. You'd think this would make him treasure her. No he hits most of the red flags to early warning signs of abuse.....he keeps things from her, bosses her around, thinks there's nothing wrong in flirting with a seventeen year gargoyle/angel princess but gets beyond angry that the vampire is even in the same room as her, attempts to manipulate her into sex by several guilt trips that if she doesn't "love him enough" he's going to die, etc. Yet she and especially her new inner angel do everything possible to make him happy.
There's also enough indirect religious pushing to choke a werewolf. Add in Philippe master trying to have a secret meeting with Cedric, a drug that causes vampires to explode, werewolves that seem like less than minor character extras, an actually interesting werewolf-turned-angel who we don't get enough of. Plus once the angel starts to wake; Aria becomes quite manipulative, using both guys to get her way. Oh and she occasionally bursts into flame.....
This book could've been so awesome but ended up as just okay. I'm an optimist though so I'm going to go read book two and hope it gets better.
The only thing I have against this book is it is basically a cliffhanger. Grrr. I also thought that Cedric acted rather childish at times considering he is the Prince of the Gargoyles or whatever. Aria is childish too, but she is supposed to be very young so that makes more sense.
Aria has always wanted to visit Paris so when her parents give her an airline ticket and her Uncle offers her a place to stay, she is on top of the world. The reality is a little less pleasant when she is sharing a room with her cousin, whom she barely knows. Gabby is not exactly thrilled to have her father force her to take her plain-Jane cousin with her to a party. Aria is pretty much abandoned as soon as they reach the yacht where the party is being held.
Philippe is the head of the vampires in Paris. He can't understand why he is drawn to the quiet little girl hanging at the edge of his party. Who the heck is she and why is she here? He finally calls his maker and discovers that the girl is apparently his mate. He doesn't want a mate. To get rid of her he must reject her. No problem.
Cedric is astonished when the bells ring that signal there is a rejected mate in Paris. He and the other gargoyles rush to find her and Cedric saves Aria from drowning and knows that she is his mate. Gargoyle males must wait for a mate to be rejected in order to have a chance. Cedric is happy to find Aria and he now has 31 days to convince her to accept him as his mate. Piece of cake, right?
Philippe cannot forget Aria and begins to search for her. What the h - e - double toothpick is she doing with a gargoyle? And his enemy to boot. Things are about to get even more complicated for Aria
There is no real ending to the book Aria has still not completely committed to Cedric, and Philippe is not giving up trying to convince her to choose him. He even goes so far as to "kidnap" her parents and bring them to Paris. When goes to a specter for advice we are left hanging as to what will happen. Darn it.
I was gifted a copy of this book from the author. My review is voluntary.
I received an ARC of this book and volunteered to write an honest review.
First of all, I want to thank Anna Santos. Not only for sending me another one of her books but also because this book in particular has helped a lot. Captive made justice to its title. It captivated me and got rid of my freaking reading slump. YAY!
Now let's get into what truly matters. In the end of Save Me (the prequel) we get a sneek peek into Aria and Cedric's story. And I was super excited to read more about them and how their relationship would develop. But to be honest, I wasn't expecting to get so into it. I might have stayed up until 4am once or twice because I just couldn't drop the book. It was that good.
The characters were amazing. I love Aria's scientist side. She had such a hard time believing in everything that Cedric was telling her. Cedric... That freaking jealous overprotective but super nice and caring bastard. And Philippe, who's such an idiot for realizing he had everything only after he lost it. He's such a jerk, but a kind of lovable one. I'm looking forward to read more about them in Red Angel.
I did find a few grammar mistakes throughout the book. However, that didn't make it hard for me to keep up with the story. And again, I read an ARC so it's not unusual to find some mistakes.
All in all, the story was amazing. I really liked it and I can't wait for Red Angel to come out. I know.. I know.. I have to be patient since Captive has just come out.
Oh, and I recommend this book to all of you, especially if you're into nephilims, angels, vampires or anything supernatural.
What started as a bit of a meh read turned into a really compelling story that had me up until the wee hours of the morning! Though the writing/editing could use some work, the story kept me interested enough that I devoured it in one sitting and immediately bought the sequel to read today.
Characters: I wasn't a big fan of the protagonist at some points in the novel. She has a habit of being whiny and crying a lot, which isn't something I'm normally into, but she had enough demeaning qualities and a big enough evolution that I can see her becoming one badass lady down the line. The two romantic interests have enough depth of their own, and I STILL can't decide who I want her to be with 100%.
World building/plot: Honestly, fabulous! I loved the world Santos was weaving, and her own spin on supernatural creatures. The plot kept me going, even though it centers around the romance, which again, isn't something I'm usually into, but Santos does a great job of making you care about her characters, especially Philippe, who I would have gladly seen dead at the first of the novel!
Writing: Though there were quite a few cringe-worthy moments both in dialogue and the rest of the prose, most of it was passable. I truly hope Santos gets another editor to go through her work as I can see a lot of people being put off by the more childish writing style used for most of the novel, even from the supposedly 100 year old vampires and angels.
Overall worth the read if you like young adult paranormal romance. Would not recommend if you do not enjoy YA books as the protagonist is definitely written to sound young. Looking forward to the next book!
A vampire... An angel... And a women... (walk into a bar, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist!)
Warning: a love triangle, soulmates and cliffhanger ending!
"Who would you rather have - a vampire or an angel - for a soul-mate?" Now, who could resist a read like this! But I must confess I had reservations about this book because of the love triangle but the author has changed my mind! I am eagerly awaiting for Red Angel!
Being rejected by your soul-mate hurts but having a second-chance with another soul-mate? Well, let's just say this: a love triangle at its finest!
I loved getting into Philippe and Cedric's head - reading their point of view, see how they are developing (or not) and their feelings for Aria.
After an ending like that, Red Angel needs to come out soon - like yesterday soon! I wonder what will happen in the next book: Who will she choose to be with forever? Hell or heaven? Will 'a certain someone' get to know her properly? So many questions.
As gripping as it is suspenseful, intriguing, dark and mysterious!
Full of vampires, angels, gargoyles, soulmates, love, rejection and second chances.
I enjoyed reading this story! It's an interesting world that Anna Santos has created here. It's different than anything I've read before. Aria is very excited to go to Paris but things go very differently than planned once she gets there. She is rejected by her vampire soul-mate and then has to escape afterwards. She is then rescued by Cedric, prince of the gargoyles and angels. They both get a second chance as Cedric and Aria become soul-mates because she was rejected. Aria had no idea about the paranormal world before all this went down so she has a hard time accepting everything. Especially the way that she was introduced. There are a lot of obstacles that Cedric and Aria have in trying to get to know each other and fall in love within their time frame. Things are complicated again, when Aria's first soul-mate decides he made a mistake. There is a lot going on in this story and the book is longer because of it. Things get fleshed out enough for you to have some guesses and to intrigue you into wanting to figure out the rest. Things book doesn't end on a cliff hanger but things are not fully resolved. There is a lot of kissing and some foreplay but no sex in this story. There is some action in this story but a lot more intrigue and twists and turns. I was drawn in and can't wait to see how Cedric and Aria's story ends up.
Book starts out a bit way to fast for my liking ... she seems a little bit all too accepting of the paranormal aswell too fast... book starts out fast paced... this book is the definition of fast!
Moving on... I got interested in Philippe part of the story. He seems to have an interesting character and some depth to him. on the other hand, so does aria... but I found cedric to be a little plain, no real story behind him, he's just... there. No past. just that he's a prince... nothing about his family was mentioned other then an item that belonged to his mother. that's it. not sure if this was intentional as author maybe wanted her readers to focus on philippe and aria more then cedric...
Also lacking a bit of details on why there was a truce and why all the hatred ? why don't they like each other ect.. no real background story is given. you get a bit of background from the vampire side. more then you get from the angels side... they are natural enemies... fair enough.. but so many question marks there.. maybe book 2 holds the answers.
4 stars as I got addicted to philippe's side of the story.... He also seems more realistic
Aria is innocent and is given a trip to Paris for her 18th birthday by her parents. Suddenly her world is completely shaken when a Vampire (Philippe) who is apparently her fated mate rejects her. She nearly dies but is saved by a Gargoyle (Cedric) and then becomes his fated mate. She is suddenly in a love triangle between two powerful races. She also has a rapid discovery that vampires, angels, gargoyles and shifters are all real. Who will she choose and can she handle the pressure of these two beings vying for her love?
I love the story and the whole premise behind it. In my head I was thinking that she would chose the both as a way of brokering peace, bu at the end of this book it appears one way but is not resolved, so I'll definitely have to read the next book to find out what happens next and who she chooses. The story was carefully written and there was a good level of detail so you could find yourself feeling and thinking like the characters.
❣️❣️ Outstanding Captivating Book ❣️❣️ Paris, magical capital of romance and love. This is the place where an exclusive and mesmerizing tale of a intelligent, but shy girl finds her self rejected by a not quite human soulmate, one that she didn't even know she had. That soul shattering experience leads to the "on the fly" meeting with a by fate new possibe soulmate. These initial events sets the pace to a riveting tale where a menagerie of supernatural species interact, plots are made, friends and foes meet, and love blossoms.its gorgously portrayed with vivid characters, stunning surroundings portrayed in a way so it feels like I the reader is there. Its a unforgettable story in it self and also the second book in a series. In my humble opinion im very happy it is, that means I can get more of this amazing story. This is without a doubt a book (and series) that will be read by generations of PNR lovers.
I wish I could give this four and a half stars. I have one complaint with this fantastic story and it isn't even really much of a complaint because it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story. But I can see where it could hinder a younger reader. The issue was with the jumping back and forth in the timeline when the character perspective chances. I thought perhaps I had somehow skipped a chapter but then the next one went back, so I can see where a younger reader may get confused. However, the author creates such a beautiful world filled with creatures of myth and romance. Aria is a relateble girl with all the insecurities and hopes of an average teen. Finding out that she is the destined mate of paranormal creatures throws her for real loop. I really loved this story and world, I can't wait for more. I requested an ARC of this book so that I could post an honest review.
This book starts really unnoticeable to what will come of it! As in the previous book, we have a broken soul that needs a new soul mate and their similarities end. And I was really glad about it. The plot was once again like: I know that part but still there was something new about it. Like getting a new idea around the one we know. The idea of two mates was really well developed with logical events. There were moments I felt some things were too long and I got to think when they will do jest thing. But it WON'T destroy a great pleasure of reading! 😉 Characters were rather well developed. But sometimes I found them too helpless and self-centered (i grow to hate one female). We get to see Cami and Jacob as they are after Save me, it was great to read about them even if they just sided characters. What I can say my rooting was for both vampire and Angel - I can't wait to read part two!
Highly emotional, sweetly sensual, action packed fight for the existence of three very different souls and keeping the peace between the various supernatural races.
Aria is a sweetly innocent, brilliantly clever and painfully shy 18 year old girl in Paris for the first time to have her dream adventure. That dream is turned on its ear the first night when her cousin takes her to a party on a boat and a whole new world is opened up to her in the most traumatic of ways. The Vampire King is her soul-mate (gasp) yet he makes a impulsive decision to protect his kingdom by rejecting her. In swoops the Angel Prince to save her rejected soul and claim her as his own in an effort to break his curse. Now she must choose ..... I highly enjoyed every heart pounding twist and turn in this roller coaster ride of emotions and look forward to what happens next.
I love Anna Santos‘ books so I’m always happy to get a new one. That’s why I was so pleased to see Archangel's Kiss (The Cursed Angels series, book 1), and wow is it ever great. There’s so much going on here. 18-year old Aria, broken hearted from rejection by her soul mate (an interesting concept in itself) who is now the vampire king, a real paranormal angel romance on the rebound (he might be a second soulmate) and, oh yeah, he’s a prince who the vampire king believes is just using her, possible war, vampire killing drugs, curses (hello Mr Prince, you wouldn’t be as pretty if you became a gargoyle ...), and woah, so much more. It’s all overwhelming. It’s also all good. Superb characters, world-building, plot-line and writing. It’s also all fun.
Captive - Aria whose Vampire Mate coldly rejects believing that he has no need of a mate is stunned and confused. She kneels unable to move, not understanding the implications of the rejection thrown her way cruelly and without pity. Philippe Buchamps rejects Aria without pause and orders his followers to take her home. Aria attacked and finds her self drowning, only to be saved by Cedric the King of the Gargoyles. Was this the second chance for both to find redemption and happiness? In this sequel to Save Me, we follow Cedric and Aria's quest for happiness, but there's another that has decided he wants another chance.... This is an amazing second installment and well worth the read!!!!
Aria nearly drowned in the Seine, jumping overboard after an attempted rape and a blood drinking assault. She flees from a nest of vampires - beings she did not believe existed a short time ago.
Surprise. She is rescued by a gargoyle prince, who recognizes her as a rejected soul. Naturally, he is a sworn enemy to the vampire king. Unknown why rejected his potential mate, except for fear.
Aria must sort through her feelings and the tangled rules about her connection to either potential mate.
It seems much more than love and lust could be on the line.
Intense adventures and tangled matter of heart and soul - frustratingly unresolved .

What exactly happens when you find out you have a soul mate and you don't want them? This wondrous tale explores one possibility amid vampires, werewolves, angels, and gargoyles! I absolutely hit the jackpot of paranormal mix with this book. The storyline was solidly built and kept me intrigued page after page, so much so that I have already loaded in the next book! That, in my opinion, is a successful first book! There are some really awesome unique elements built into this tale that can't be disclosed in a review to keep the surprise intact! An excellent tale that I recommend highly! This voluntary review is based against a Kindle Unlimited copy
Aria was just way too perfect to be anything but annoying. "But mom I want to go to MIT and use my super smart brain to cure cancer, not Julliard because playing the violin exceptionally well is just a way to relieve my non-existent stress." And the dialogue was very unnatural and made everything really weird. I can accept strange dialogue from supernatural beings but not from her parents, talking to her like they're her travel agents. I also didn't like that it jumped around in time, the whole one week earlier thing annoyed me. And it just seemed like both "love" interests left a lot to be desired so...no thank you.
This story had a lot of potential but unfortunately the author couldn't do justice to it. It is way too slow as a first book to a series. No character development, I still don't know what Cedric, Aria and Philippe are good at (as in what are their super powers). Way too much romance not to my liking. Aria is way too childish when facing challenges like Charlie. It was my first novel regarding angels, vampires etc and I liked the concept but this particular novel had way less material in it as a first book to the series. Its all about love, lust and jealousy. Very predictable and annoying. Disappointing!!!
Having said that, I have to say that there were a couple of places where I felt that the author was confused about whether she wanted us to like or hate the vampires and/or angels as a species. There are 2 very different sides of both the vampire & the angel species shown in this book and it left me confused as to whether I should feel sorry or good about them.
The plot in itself is simply creative since it starts with only the 2 above mentioned species of paranormals and slowly moves forward to encompass others like the shifters.

So Vamp meets soul mate, rejects soul mate and she almost dies but is rescued by a Gargoyle who is cursed?? Wonderful!!I love it, great love triangle with a few twists. I did have to remind myself Aria was only 18 sometimes but other than that it was a great story with everything there to make it worthy of a read. The more I read of the series the more I want. Each book gets better and makes me want more. The author feeds us enough information to make us hungry for more while giving us a story that is intriguing and full of action and proper angst. Wonderful read.
