New World Shifters #1

The Omega Shift

Rate this book
M/M Dystopian Paranormal romance.

In a world where only the paranormals survived... A virus wiped out all humans on Earth ten years ago and now there is a war going on between all those left standing.

Caden is an Omega wolf, struggling to stay alive among the ranks of the vicious pack he belongs to. He’s been used and abused by so many who were meant to protect him, yet is alive, unlike so many other Omegas who did not survive the rigors of the new world. His only goal is to fulfill his promise to his grandma, to survive at any cost.

Max, Alpha of the Olano pack was a cop for ten years before the world went to hell in a hand basket. Now, he fights to keep his pack on top, fed and alive. He mounts an attack against a rival pack, only to realise that a revered Omega is among their ranks, and not only that, but Caden is his fated mate.

Can Max convince the broken Caden that love and destiny still exist, or will the violence of their fractured world tear them apart?

*** Guaranteed happily ever after, standalone book. Steamy short read with a possessive Alpha and a broken Omega.****

Time of death 80%.

I gave it as long as I could and I actually thought I was going to enjoy it and it was going to be sweet in the beginning. They were supposed to be mates, but then there was the stupid ass misunderstanding with the bad guy and almost cheating because Caden was just too sheltered and beaten down in life to know he was being lead astray and it ruined the whole hurt-comfort thing going on because then Max was a fucking dick and I hated them both and didn’t give a fuck about either of them!

A little rushed, but interesting read. Everything was on hyper-fast development, and I wished there'd been more depth to the characters...

Also, random unnecessary apostrophes (as well as ones missing when actually needed) kept bothering me. I'd have probably given this 3.5 Stars (as well as the actual round-up) were it not for those. Seriously, it was present in almost every instance of plural rather than contraction or possession when it came to certain words like Alpha (Alpha's) and Omega (Omega's); a good editor would have probably caught that. Well, I'd hope so.

Still, that first chapter sneak peak of the second one was intriguing enough to put it on the TBR for later. Definitely sounded more complex, possibly, given the different setting and circumstances than this first one. Let's (as in LET US) hope that I can either overlook the grammar or someone took a red pen to it first...

Needs work...

Has a lot of promise to be a good story, but is lacking in character/world development. I believe that having this would of helped with the overall flow of the story.

Caden has been taught from the age of 12 that he's only good for his body. So when a member of the pack lures him into his house and tries to assault him, Caden gets....accused of cheating, by MC2 and MC2's "understanding" mother.

This is after I already stuck through MC2 saying "You're free to make your choice on who you want to be with. But also, you're not allowed to talk to any other man and you're going to sleep in my bed."

The omega shift by Tasmin Baker.
A virus wiped out all humans decades ago, and now there is a war between all the paranormals left on Earth. Vampires fight with the witches, who battle against the animal shifters, and they all war among themselves.
Caden is an Omega wolf, struggling to stay alive among the ranks of his powerful, vicious pack. He’s been used and abused, and yet he is alive, unlike so many other Omega’s that have not survived the rigors of the new world. His only goal is to get through every day and pray to whatever deity that is still watching them, to bring peace before they’re all destroyed.
Max, Alpha of the Olano pack was a cop for ten years before the world went to hell in a hand basket. Now, everyday he fights to keep his pack on top, fed and alive. He mounts an attack against a rival pack, but as soon as he sees the Omega wolf amongst their ranks, he knows he’s met his fated mate.
Can Max convince the broken Omega that love and destiny still exist in this world, or will the violence of the fighting around them, tear them apart?
This was a really enjoyable read. I liked the story and some of the characters. Some characters I didn't like. Looking forward to reading the next book. 5*.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

We end up meeting Cayden who has been abused and used and just treated like shif. The world as we know it has just changed dramatically. Humans have died and all the supernatural things are running a muck and just having a free-for-all. Cayden's Grandma tells Caden to survive at all cost however being 13 and naive he takes it to a whole new level.

Max is an Alpha and he is just following in his father's wolf paws. The meeting between Max and Cayden is a chance encounter. Just like any shifter/dystopia story there is deceit, death, and the strong will always survive.

I have to admit that this story is a quick read and I enjoyed it. The title I did not understand, the mega shift. Maybe I'm reading way to much into it however I do like my titles to play a part in what the story is about. Maybe it means that Cayden, the Omega, is shifting into the way he should be treated? Now I'm going to go and think about how does the title relate to the book.

I do want to continue with Max and Kayden to see what happens next. What happened to the vampires? What about the other packs out in the world? Will there ever be a ruling Council in this new world? So many questions and I do hope that some if not majority of them do get answered.

Not bad but I didn't real care about the characters or what happened to them.

Maybe it was to short and everything happened so quickly. I can't really say.

This may be case of "It's not you, it's me".

I expected a lot being its distopian and shifters with the human race wiped out but I've read much better and if it had been longer, more descriptive of the problems they go through I probably could have been more entertained. The conflict was staged, the Alpha was a brat and didn't deserve his omegas forgiveness so the resolution was ridiculous.

As it is, I won't continue with the series and probably not read anything from this author again. Two stars because as I said, it wasn't bad, just not my cuppa.

The world as we know it is gone. Humanity has been killed off by a virus that left only the supernatural creatures—shifters and vampires—behind. And with that comes a host of problems, not the lest of which is the entire collapse of civilization as we know it.

This is the world that Omega Caden, badly abused by his pack, lives in. He’s been mistreated, called worthless, beaten and starved his entire life. When his pack is destroyed by another pack he and the females and children are taken in by the new pack.

Max is the leader of this pack. He’s painted as a good guy, but...and here’s where I find the story not to hold up. He’s a jerk of the first order. (Something I find all too common in shifter romances where Alphas are the center of attention.) He knows Caden is his ‘fated mate’ but does he do anything to explain this to Caden?

No he does not. Max expects Caden to simply get over his mental and physical abuse without any support, or explanations from him. Sure, he gives the physically starved Caden food, but what he fails to do is give Caden the emotional support he needs.

And this sets up the third act breakup when Barry, a sleezy Beta shifter convinces the emotionally wrecked Caden that Max doesn’t love him. Something easy to do since Max really hasn’t done anything for Caden, his ‘fated mate’ to show love. Nothing.

The third act breakup is triggered by Barry’s slimy behavior but it’s further compounded by Max being a full-on jerk afterward. He doesn’t give Caden a chance to explain, and since Max has seen how abused Caden has been his whole life, he doesn’t even take that into consideration. He gets angry—typical ‘alpha male’ behavior in full view—and refuses to accept Caden.

This is why I couldn’t give this book a higher rating. Max is too much of a total jerk to be likable. His utter disregard for Caden’s prior unpleasant life, with the book focusing on how *Caden* has to change rather than Max learning to understand the awful life Caden has suffered through was off putting.

Not a bad book, but Max was not the understanding hero Caden needed. Your opinion may differ.

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book***

This was an interesting storyline. I'm sure that there will more books to come from this stark world where only the strong survive. I haven't read such a unique storyline before and found that I enjoyed it very much. The author painted a vivid picture of this world for the readers and created interesting characters fighting to stay alive under harsh conditions.

Max's job as alpha is hard in this harsh new world where humans no longer exist and shifters struggle to survive. Caden is an omega and omegas are scarce and a male omega a rarity. Omega's are supposed to be revered and treasured but those are just rumors and legends to Caden. He has been abused both physically and mentally. Doing what he needs to, to survive has left him empty, terrified, and who no sense of self. When Caden's wolf pack is attacked leaving only women, children, and Caden they are invited to join Max's pack. Max is strongly drawn to Caden and Max needs to keep him safe. Caden is also strongly drawn to Max and makes him want to be Max's alone. Max wants Caden desperately but he also wants to give Caden a safe place to stay and a choice in who will be with. Doubts, fears, uncertainty, and misunderstandings lead to Max rejecting Caden. Caden fearfully tries to figure out his feelings and prove to himself that he is a strong person capable of more than he thought he was.

The book shows the reader a very different Earth with both good and bad shifters. Max didn't stay and talk through things with Caden which left both hurting. After Max is seriously hurt Caden tries to show Caden how much he wants, needs, and loves Max. What does the future hold for this pair is anyone's guess but I'm sure there are many other pairs just like Max and Caden and I'm looking forward to meeting them and I hope you will too.

Caden is an omega wolf who is struggling to survive after the old world ended. He is part of an abusive pack run by some wanna be alphas who are greedy to keep most of the food to themselves. Caden has to use sex and take lots of abuse just to survive. Then one day his pack is attacked by another pack lead by a real alpha. The invading pack kills off all the male wolves except for Caden. The new alpha takes pity on the starving females and Caden and takes them back to his den. Caden doesn't know how to handle his new life. The alpha doesn't abuse him and refuses to have sex with Caden when he discovers Caden is using sex to protect himself.
Max is the Alpha of the invading pack. He is shocked to find Caden among the survivors. Max thought all omegas had died out. He is also surprised how strongly he is drawn to Caden. Max thinks he had found what most wolves have given up hopes of ever finding, his destined mate. Now Max has to teach Caden how omega should really act and help him rebuild his confidence.
This is a great book about a young man who was constantly abused having to learn trust and kindness. Hopefully Caden won't let his past to lead him to make stupid mistakes. I voluntarily received a copy of this story and this is my honest review.

Good, then a major disappointment

So. This was......alright. Mostly.

It's a post-apocalyptic world. Life is generally dog-eat-dog, and for an omega with little skills Caden's life is truly crap. Until another pack takes over his, and the alpha takes an interest in him. Max is a true alpha and wants to be with Caden, but wants to give him choice and happiness, not just force him.

All of this was nice, an easy and enjoyable read with some sweet and heat. Then we get to the inevitable shake up and I wanted nothing more than to smack Max. Caden gets lured away and Max, who has been all about choice and caring, gets pissy and sulky. Through his anger, Max sits there and wonders why oh why did Caden 'betray' him. But what doesn't Max do? Actually bloody well ask Caden. Brilliant since Caden was more than willing to explain, and when he does Max is horrified. The man was an idiot who didn't deserve Caden's love and loyalty and I ended the book pissed rather than pleased.

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and entirely mine review***

First the storyline was amazing and unique. I loved the concept of it. It also made me a blubbering baby! I cried sooo much.

Caden is an Omega who was basically abused for a decade at the hands of former alphas in his pack. His story and the way he reacted to everything killed me a little inside but oh was the story so good!

Max was an alpha of his own pack and he took in Caden and the women and children that were left after the men were killed. I loved the way he loved to protect his pack and Caden. The patience he had with him, it killed me how things went down for him but I loved how it ended.

I truly wished the book was longer BUT I loved it nonetheless. I always hope it's not an standalone book. I love to see more of a series, I read it!

The Omega Shift is a great start to a new series that's set in a post-apocalyptic Seattle. After a virus kills all the humans, only paranormal creatures are still alive and fighting for survival with the world and against other paranormals. The story shows two drastically different camps of survivors and types of humanity. Caden, the Omega, struggles to survive in the worst of conditions and is overwhelmed when he's rescued by a new Alpha in Max and taken to his compound with walls, safety, and food/water for everyone. Max, having thought that all the omega wolves had died off, is surprised to discover that Caden is his mate. With his history Caden doesn't make the relationship easy and Max struggles with trusting him. But in the end its Caden that saves Max and both of them get their HEA! Can't wait to read more in this series!

I received a copy of this book from Booksprout and I gladly leave my review.
This is a dark dystopian tale, after the virus and social breakdown. This is the story of Max and Caden. Max is the alpha wolf who used to be a cop, and Caden is the Omega. This story made me go through a lot of emotions especially anger, anger at Max for being insensitive towards Caden and the abuse that Caden suffered through for ten years. I loved the storyline and the characters, u actually want to smack Max around with his attitude so u get involved with the book. I definitely recommend this book it’s a great read and well worth it.

Love the cover. It started off great. The world building was wonderful for such a short read but the last couple of chapter was a bit disappointing for me. I didn't think Caden deserved Max because he was so foolish but I do understand how he could be tricked into the situation he got himself into. There was no real room for Caden and Max to really get to know each other and the issues with the Vamps were never resolved but for the first book of a new series it was fine. i hope the next book will redeem it but readers will have to see.

Half a book.

This could have been really really good but honestly it was only half a dang book. It’s written with so many things left vague or extremely rushed. It’s not fleshed out. I wanted to actually see them fall in love, deal with the anguish and betrayal, and really come together. It was like a parent telling a story to a child and rushing through details to get to the end. Otherwise I liked the world, I liked the characters, and the plot. But man I just wanted more. It’s hard to connect with an outline of a story.

Ok read

I really enjoyed the little bit of this world the author is creating. Not everything is explained in thorough detail but I don't expect that from shorter reads. Do I think it would have been better fleshed out? Absolutely! It would have given a chance for the characters to be improved on as well. Nothing was really super bad. Some typos, forced drama (the dreaded eleventh hour break up), and I don't think there is any link between this book and the next one besides them both taking place in this dystopian world. Unsure if I will read it but it's going on my TBR list.

A feel good story with just the right amount of angst. An abused omega, a true alpha can either be what the other needs or will the abuse and conditioning Caden has suffered spoil everything?
Writing is tight, characters are likeable. Yes, this isn't a groundbreaking story but it does EXACTLY what its meant to do, draw you in, give a bit of a tingle, a bit of a worry, all with the knowledge that these books always end with a....
if you like paranormal m/m shifter romance, this is a goodie!

In this post-apocalyptic world, only shifters have survived. It's all out war, and is intense. The Omega is used and abused, until his gated mate attacks his pack and takes all the survivors in. There is a lot of damage done to the Omega, and after some really intense drama, true love is found. I'm glad that I read this book, and look forward to discovering more from this author.

Please note that I did receive an ARC, and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Great story of a whole new world of shifters. Caden was abused and treated horribly in his old pack but is now under the protection of Max, the alpha. They are fated mates and their connection is very strong. I wish Max would have been a little more understanding of Caden's mistake but Caden perseveres. Other than that, I love watching their relationship develop.

I really liked it. My kind of book. Decent plot, great world building, likable characters, cheesy dialog, low angst and lots of sexy scenes. This is a no nonsense kinda book for when you are craving a little action, a little bit fantasy, lots if heat, and plenty of cheesy interactions. I really liked that I couldn’t find grammatical errors. I probably gave this book too many stars because it checked all my boxes and because you can tell the author cares about the story.

Enjoyable shifter story

I liked the premise of this story. In a dystopian world where all humans have died, life for paranormals is difficult.

Caden is a rare omega but doesn't truly understand what that means. When his path crosses with alpha Max everything changes for him.

There were some parts where I thought the wording was a little odd, but it didn't overshadow the story for me.

Very interesting

I appreciated the dystopian setting to the book, and I like the characters, though Max could have been fleshed out a little more. Caden however was a broken boy in a broken world and his journey was heartbreaking. I like the story I just wish there was some explanation about the end, if Caden's blood had something in it or if love was an antitoxin to the vampires venom. The ending felt a little rushed but overall a decent book.

This book sounded promising, but Caden is so broken by what he had to go through, he doesn't know how to act in a save situation.
Max tried to give him space, but doesn't talk with him enough. Especially not when Caden makes a mistake. There should have been more about healing Caden in the book to make it a 4 stars read.

In the end Caden doesn't want to let Max go and does everything for him.

Short, sweet, simple

I'm glad this was free. For as short as it is, it's even shorter. The last 12 pages are a preview for 'book 2'. Not all bad, Lotta information thrown at you in a short time. Could have been stretched out into a real full-length book. The writing was actually well done. Howeverver, on just a personal complaint, the word 'arse' just grates on my nerves. No one actually says that outside of back alley gutter trash.
