Essie's adventures continue! She has rescued the King, and her father is again First Champion of Plen. Everything is different now! But the city of Plen has baggage and there is trouble brewing. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and loved seeing characters return and Essie's understanding of her gifts grow. I am eager for book 3!
These books are excellent for readers of all ages.

Lovely adventures with plenty of twists and turns to surprise a trader with every new page.

I can't think how the book could be improved and don't believe there is any reason to limit the readership in any fashion at all. Young, old, serious or lighthearted, there's amusement and learning enough for everyone in these pages.

Fantastic second book in the series. The journey continues and new characters are introduced. The pace is great. I listened to the audio book and loved the narrator. The story hooked me and left me longing for the next book. I can't wait to continue on the path and find out what happens.

Great middle grade fantasy book.

I liked the idea of a blind MC. It did seem a bit unlikely at times - how enhanced her senses were, and her social responses, but I'm thankfully no expert on the topic. She has a great voice, and plucky courage that takes her through any situation.

There are great characters (go talking cat!), and even tho I've never read the first book, there's enough background info that I rarely felt lost. So it's good to read as a standalone too, although I'm considering getting the first book now.

I recommend this for anyone ready for a high level middle grade fantasy read, and anyone of any age, with good taste.

Once again, Mr. Broaddus has given us an entertaining, fast-paced tale of magic, intrigue, and adventure. A sequel to A Hero's Curse, I liked this book even better than the first—and Parker has done a fine job of making it stand on its own.

The story tackles a challenge common to young and old alike: choice. Essie has to learn for herself, but she is not alone. Her friends are more understanding and reliable than she imagines, and she finds support in an unexpected place. Not everything is what it first seems to be on the surface. There is a wonderful depth in this story, and in the way it explores friendship, power, pride, and our perceptions of the world around us.

After reading A Hero's Curse (book 1) I was eager to see what happens next, and Nightrage Rising was even better and fulfilled all my expectations. Looking forward to a sequel soon.
