About the author

Hermann was born in 1938 in Bévercé (now a part of Malmedy) in Liège Province. After studying to become a furniture maker and working as interior architect, Hermann made his debut as comic book artist in 1964 in the comics magazine Spirou with a four page story. Greg noticed his talent and offered him to work for his studio. In 1966, he began illustrating the Bernard Prince series written by Greg, published in the comic magazine Tintin periodical. In 1969, also in collaboration with Greg, he began the western series Comanche. This appeared at the same time as other western series such as Blueberry.
Hermann began writing his own stories in 1977, starting the post-apocalyptic Jeremiah series, which is still produced today. In the same period, he also made three albums of Nick, inspired by Little Nemo in Slumberland, for Spirou.[1] In 1983 he began a new series, Les Tours de Bois-Maury, which is set in the Middle Ages and is less focused on action than his other works.
Hermann has also created many non-series graphic novels sometimes together with his son Yves H. One of them, Lune de Guerre, with a story by Jean Van Hamme, was later filmed as The Wedding Party by Dominique Deruddere.[2]
Hermann is characterized by a realistic style and stories that are both somber and angry, with a sense of disillusion with regards to the human character in general, and current society more specifically.

To chyba najsłabsze ogniwo całej serii. Częste referencje do irracjonalnych zdarzeń zdaja się sugerować, że bohater przespał ten epizod, a my mamy do czynienia z chyba jakimś jego snem.

Les aventures du sire de Bois-Maury se poursuivent en Scandinavie, là où le passé viking n'est pas bien loin. Une bonne aventure !

Pomimo tego, że w tym albumie pojawia się fantastyka, od której wcześniej w tej serii – i raczej zwykle w swoich komiksach – Huppen stroni, to nadal uważam, że "Wieże Bois-Maury" są najbardziej realistyczną panoramą średniowiecza ujętą w komiksowe ramy. Jest tak nie tylko z powodu stylu Huppena, któremu najbliżej do naturalizmu, ale przede wszystkim dlatego, że budując postacie, którymi zaludnił plansze tej serii, Huppen starał się wejść w buty człowieka żyjącego w tej epoce i myślącego tak, jak mógł myśleć taki człowiek. Tematem nie są tu więc wcale wszystkie te fantastyczne wydarzenia – dodajmy, całkiem sugestywnie ukazane – ale to, jak mogła działać wyobraźnia ludzi żyjących w tej epoce i jak mogli reagować na coś, czego nie byli w stanie pojąć. Dlatego – podobnie jak nawet bardziej baśniowych "Towarzyszy zmierzchu" – nie zaliczyłbym tej opowieści do nurtu fantasy. Jest to kolejna część świetnego cyklu historycznego, który ja z uwagi na postacie głównych bohaterów i ich stopniową, nieznaczną, ale w dłuższej perspektywie zauważalną przemianę, traktowałbym jako jedną opowieść – choć każdy z tomów przedstawia inną historię.

Excelente historia y arte, este ha sido el volumen que mas me ha gustado al momento. El caballero errante Aymar de Bois-Maury llega a un castillo donde se celebran justas de caballeros siendo, el hermano del rey muere, pero se revela las creencias antiguas de la familia, ahora cristianos, relacionadas con las deidades nordicas y la maldicion de que pesa sobre esta familia. Hermann es un gran paisajista y aparte creo que pule muy bien sus dotes de escritor.

L'épisode le plus étrange de la série (si on ne considère que les dix premiers, la série "originelle").

L'épisode est même clairement fantastique, et tranche nettement avec le reste de la série. Les qualités scénaristiques et graphiques sont toujours au rendez-vous, et bien que surprenant, l'album est agréable.
