This is all about Bree with three scenarios in it for a beginning fellowship. There's a nice contrast between the attitude of the locals and the wonders of wonders. If you run those three scenarios you probably don't want anyone playing elves or anything particularly exotic as the people of Bree mostly believes they are legends or never seen.

MY GRADE: A minus.

The Cubicle 7 crew just write amazing books. They're easy to read through like a novel and full of inspiration not just for The One Ring but also any RPG or any storytelling whatsoever.

A book about one of my favourite locations in Middle Earth. What's not to like.

I enjoyed the background information and attention to detail bringing the village back to life after the book, radio play and films already have set the place securely in our mind. Wonderful.

The three scenarios are slightly underwhelming as these take place elsewhere and not in Bree itself. I'm not a huge fan of published scenarios but I thought they did well with these 3 as a stand alone trilogy. My only criticism however is that they could take place in any D&D or generic fantasy setting. Yes there are references to Trolls and Hobbit/Bree things but these adventures really seem like they could be happening anywhere. I enjoyed the sorcerer hiding in a Hobbit hole story line as this reminded me of Sharkey. My mind wondered a little with the troll chase but I enjoyed the caravan murder mystery element and a visit from the Elves midway.

Would have been good to have more adventure tailored to the town of Bree itself not just stuff happening beyond it's borders. Some of it felt a bit Ghostbusters or Call of Cthulhu. It was clear I was reading an RPG scenario and felt slightly distracted from Tolkien's world.

That aside this is a really strong researched book for games and is very inspirational. One I shall use if I run the One Ring again. For more details on Bree have a look for ICE's MERP publication.
Thank you for writing this. The atmosphere inside was as cosy as the cover art.

Bree is a setting supplement for The One Ring roleplaying game.

This book describes the village of Bree (and its famous inn, The Prancing Pony) in some detail, then provides three written adventure scenarios to ease you into playing there. This book is fairly solid though I think could have benefited from adding in a few more invented locations in the countryside around Bree (instead of devoting two pages to basically telling you the're nothing there). Of the three adventures, the first is really solid, the second is less so, and the third is a mixed bag (half of it being a really solid adventure about getting a madman out of a hobbit smial, the other half is a tacked-on feeling travel scenario in which creatures with no rhyme nor reason are encountered). The physical layout and illustrations are what you'd expect from this series, but the art direction slipped a little here, in that it seems like the art direction didn't read the text (or vice versa). The book also provides the info needs to create Men of Bree characters. I'll give this one a 3/5.
