Oh. My. God.
It's been a while since I've been this *shocked* by a book. Shocked by how good it was. And shocked by the fact that I have to wait more than a year to read the next volume.
But mostly shocked by how good this was.
I actually hate using phrases like, "this isn't just BL anymore", because it makes it seem like being just BL is a bad thing, and I don't think it is. But manga like this? Transcend the genre, while probably only being possible because of the genre.
This is not a happy manga. The main character is a victim of child abuse (both physical and sexual), and it's really disturbing in parts. And because this is the first volume, there is no kind of katharsis, which.. definitely doesn't make things easier for the reader.
Yutaka is the son of a former boxer working as a trainer at his father's gym. He's gay, but he's hiding it from everyone around him, especially his father. One day, while out with his boyfriend, the two of them are dragged into a fight and finally rescued by a foreign-looking young man who seems to know his way around a fight. Yutaka invites him to come to their gym, and a couple of days later Kei - the foreign-looking young man - does just that. He says he wants to become a professional boxer, and after seeing him train Yutaka's father agrees, letting him live in the gym's dorm. When Yutaka shows him around, Kei threatens to expose Yutaka's homosexuality if he doesn't let Kei do what he wants - it turns out Kei isn't all that serious about becoming a boxer, he mostly just wants a place to live. Yutaka cannot accept that, and so Kei forces him to have sex with him instead. After that, Kei keeps living at the dorm and working out at the gym, and Yutaka continues to have sex with him. And as time passes, Kei gets better and better - and also more and more dependent on Yutaka.
There's more to the plot than that, of course. What struck me most was the visuals - first, only the cover looks "BL-like" - the interior art could also be that of a seinen manga a lot of the time, I feel. And I love, love, LOVE what she did with Kei's memory/flashbacks. They're told in a video game style, and while it seemed odd at first, it really really worked.
I bought the ebook when it was on sale after seeing it mentioned again and again, and I am so glad I did. I definitely need a physical copy as well, though.
This is definitely going on my "best of the year" list - it's absolutely fantastic. If you have a chance, please buy it and read it. In a better world, more manga like this would be licenced and translated, but sadly I don't see that happening. But honestly? Learning Japanese so you can read things like that is absolutely worth it.

Trata de un boxeador que acoge a un chico nuevo en el equipo porque le da pena ya que ese chico tiene un buen corazón pero su mente ha quedado arruinada con una enfermedad mental debido a unos terribles años de abusos. El boxeador, con boxeo y cariño trata de sacarle de esos rincones oscuros.
Esta nueva serie ya tiene publicado dos tomos. En mi caso solo leí el primer tomo porque la historia me parecía que tenía una prosa y un enfoque verdaderamente difícil de entender. Recuerdo leer capítulos sin comprender que era exactamente lo que pasaba, y odio sentirme tan perdida.
La verdad es que no me animo a seguir con esta serie, aunque es probable que a otras personas les intrigue su enfoque lleno de rareza, y sus personajes con mil secretos, entre ellos la otra personalidad del chico traumado.

Enamorada de esta historia es quedarse corta. Los feels los tengo a flor de piel.
Yutaka tiene dos problemas: 1. A pesar del sueño de su padre, no ha devenido boxeador profesional y se dedica a entrenar a otros en el club de su padre. 2. Es gay y, si su padre se enterara, sería un doble fracaso para él. Por eso mantiene su sexualidad en secreto al igual que su relación. Hasta que entra en su vida como un puñetazo, como una tormenta, Kei, un chico de pelo blanco y ojos azules que no parece japonés. Cuando Yutaka lo ve golear a unos tipos en la calle, le invita a ir al club de boxeo de su padre. Sin tenerlas todas consigo, Yutaka ve que Kei va al gimnasio y su don para el boxeo. Ahí es cuando el padre de Yutaka le permite a Kei quedarse en un piso que reservan para aquellos chicos que se unen al club. Pero Kei no quiere ser un boxeador de verdad, sino un techo donde estar hasta cumplir los 20 y ser mayor de edad. Por eso le dice a Yutaka que los dos son iguales y que si uno finge ser boxeador el otro finge ser heterosexual. Yutaka no ve bien la actuación de Kei y quiere decir la verdad. Si dices algo, yo le diré a tu padre que eres gay. Con esas palabras, Kei amenaza a Yutaka y los dos hacen un trato: Kei no dirá nada y Yutaka se acostará con él.
Debo decir que siento debilidad ante las historias de boxeo y, también, en las que hay chantajes de este tipo (siempre y cuando esté bien pensado, tratado o que sea una crítica o una historia tóxica a posta) y aquí la autora utiliza la relación sexual entre ambos personajes para desarrollar no sólo una relación afectiva sino también una de boxeador y su entrenador, una que tiene todo el sentido. Porque Kei es un ser frío, sin amor que no siente nada y que utiliza el sexo como moneda de cambio desde que tiene memoria. Como un cascarón vacío, su vida es como un videojuego, como si pasara todo a través de una pantalla de televisión y nunca había deseado nada hasta que no empieza a sentirse cada vez más atado emocionalmente con Yutaka que, poco a poco va conociendo un poco más a Kei y partes de su pasado oscuro.
El desarrollo de la historia es impresionante en todo el tomo. Tiene un buen ritmo, una narrativa bien construida y un dibujo atractivo que expresa muchísimo los sentimientos de los personajes a través de la mirada de estos. Deseando leer los dos restantes, tengo claro que este manga pasará a ser de mis favoritos e Ichinose Yuma una autora que tendré muuuuuy en cuenta.

L'histoire est plutôt sympa et on suit les méandres du monde impitoyable la boxe, les dessous des clubs pour tirer leur épingle du jeu et se faire reconnaître, les batailles pour dénicher / voler / conserver les boxeurs de talent. Les combattants les moins bons essayent de mettre des bâtons dans les roues des plus prometteurs, ce qui montre des dessous pas très reluisant du monde sportif et de la compétition qui y règne.Cette facette-là est bien structurée, claire et compréhensible.
Ce qui m'a beaucoup moins plu, c'est la façon dont est construit le yaoi, ça m'a semblé très cafouillis quand on commence à s'intéresser au passé de Kei. On découvre des brides de son enfance, de son adolescence qui s’intègrent dans le récit très aléatoirement, ça saute du coq à l'âne pour revenir au coq sans que ce soit clair. On finit par ne plus comprendre de quelle époque on parle, c'est très perturbant et ça a rendu ma compréhension de la construction mentale de Kei très difficile -une relecture ne sera pas de trop je pense- et une certaine envie de très vite finir ce manga pour passer à un autre. Le fonctionnement du cerveau de Kei m'a un peu fait penser à la schizophrénie de Gollum dans le Seigneur des Anneaux, ça m'a rendu un peu mal à l'aise à la lecture. J'espère que le second et dernier tome sera un peu plus léger.

La historia de principio a fin es bastante atrapante por cada una una de las líneas inconclusas de información que te da capítulo a capítulo. Por otra parte, el que poco a poco se esté reflejando la razón de la personalidad y los traumas de Kei, es algo que en lo personal me pareció muy interesante.
Algo que me gustó bastante fue el hecho de que la autora no tratara de romantizar los traumas de Kei, sino darle en enfoque triste y cruel que realmente merece, por lo que fue un gran punto bueno a favor de la historia. Además, el desarrollo de la relación de Kei con Yutaka está muy bien cuidado, evitando que pareciera demasiado apresurado o sin sentido.

Al comienzo estaba de: que pasa? No entiendo nada! Luego ya se entiende muy bien, incluso la forma de explicar los traumas internos (trata bien ese tema, una forma directa de mostrar el niño interior herido tal cual leí en un libro de psicología) con responsabilidad y cuidado, al menos en este tomo.
Por otro lado, está historia tiene cosas muy cuestionables y comienza con una relación tóxica. Pero nunca lo romántiza. Hasta que las cosas van mejor y luego no tan bien por los secretos y traumas de uno de ellos (lo cual, las reacciones del personaje fueron muy realistas). Está historia puede que destruya el corazón.

Bueno, ojalá sean todos así.
Atrapante, seductor y absoluto. El hijo de un boxeador famoso que no tiene talento se topa con un adolescente con dotes de lucha que comienza a chantajearle. Tras esa fachada se esconde una personalidad herida y disociada, que se desvive y se postra por el afecto del otro.

I don't read from this genre anymore (I hardly did in the first place).
I probably will never return to reading BL or MxM "romance" after I read the BL/MxM manga in my current "to read" list
I don't agree with anything of the actions of the characters in this story.
I don't support the abusive relationship of the second main character nor did I enjoy the love scenes.
The main character was sexually assaulted and blackmailed by the second lead in this story.
The writer wrote these scenes as if it was romantic which it wasn't.
I forgot all about this awful book until it popped up in my "read list" after the recent GR update.
I remember this manga being popular among fujoshi(yaoi manga fangirls) on manga scan websites years ago.
This story was supposed to be about a boy who is training to be a professional boxer to escape from his troubles and have a better way in life.
That was the synopsis on the website I read from at the time.
Sounds like great story right?
Unfortunately this was yet another Japanese yaoi (male x male romance)story for women with a fetish for gay people and abuse.
What "Gift" is actually about is a abused young man who becomes a boxer to have money to live in a better place.
A nihilistic and disturbed man(I don't remember the ages of characters. I think they were supposed to be either in their late teens or early to mid- twenties) blackmails the main character into having sexual relations with him.
The main character agrees in fear of being exposed and ostracized for being gay.
The sex scenes were creepy and disgusting so I didn't read them pass the first few panels.
The main character never stands up for himself and instead allows the second lead to do with his body as he pleases while looks miserable.
He always looks depressed and hopeless even when they aren't having sex.
This is awful trend in gay and lesbian manga and Korean webtoon stories.
The characters never seem to actually like each other and one of the characters is either much older than the other character,a rapist or both.
The abuse is never questioned and the abuser is almost never arrested especially if isn't the "love interest" of the main character.
The characters entire identity is being gay so even if one of the characters had some sort of goal it's almost immediately pushed aside for that lazily written "romance"
I'm contemplating on rather I should re-read this volume to properly review it for future readers or abandon the idea all together.
I have a list of the BL and M x M romances I read as a child that I will review and warn future readers about.
I do not recommend this story to anyone especially people who have gone through abuse.
