Touch.
The simplest form of communication.
For some, the most complex. Undercover cop, Lucia has more secrets than a rat's nest. She works the beat, works it well, until she infiltrates a gang where she finally finds her place. Jungle justice suits her down to a tee, but the day comes when she has to return to her real life, and brothers in arms suddenly become enemies, as she flounders to find her place in the world once more. Martinez, a gang boss, one of the most powerful men in the city, has had his eyes on Lucia from the start. His instincts told him she was the rat in his midst, but other, baser, parts of him swayed his judgment. When his brother is sent down thanks to Lucia's testimony, he can think only of revenge. When a woman who can't stand to be touched has to fight for her life in the bed of a man who can kill her in the blink of an eye, everything, even reality, unravels. On the run, her past as a cop and footsoldier chasing at her heels, Lucia's safety lies in the hands of the one man who can and will hurt her the most. Through his raw touch, she has to find a haven where all around her, there is nothing but hell. Can she allow him into the ashes of her life, if it means her survival is at risk? Find out in The Raw Touch . Reader this full-length novel contains scenes of dubious consent, as well as information that readers might find upsetting. (Word Count approx. 84k)

4 undercover stars

This author once again attacked a new genre . And told a new story of weaving mafia bosses into something not very often done
There were so deep emotional stories being told in this book blended with lust slammed into bdsm elements.

A woman falls in love with el jefe and learns to love herself in the same breath
original

Our main character is bad ass female who initially was scarred by her past and tied to a woman who no longer existed and a family suffocating her ...and she turned into a woman that makes you yell "go girl"

original_1

I think what hurt this story is there were too many layers and elements I think the bdsm didn't really fit but I understood why it was put in ... something was too much . I enjoyed the book and can see it being a series and yet happy if it's a standalone

Officer Lucia Lingston has just come off a deep undercover assignment that netted the successful conviction of multiple Lobos Rojos crime syndicate members including kingpin Matteo Martinez.

Used to watching her back so as not to draw suspicion while undercover, Lucia is having problems moving on from her gangster persona Eva Fernandez who she had more in common with than she should have. Now back on the force, it's time for her to bury her life in the underbelly of society along with all the other memories she's had to endure in her life and move on.

Matteo's brother Martinez had his suspicions regarding Eva from the start but she passed all the tests of loyalty proving her worth. All lies as it was proven that she was a rat pig sent to bring his family down. It's now his turn. Finding out where Officer Lucia Lingston lives, Martinez sets in motion plans to deal with Lucia/Eva on his terms, in his way.

Cautionary Warning: This is a dark themed book that may serve as triggers for those who are sensitive to sexual abuse, non-dub con, and traumatic abduction scenarios. Consider yourself warned.

This was an accidental discovery that intrigued me after reading the sample 10% beginning. One click later I'm enjoying this dark mafia/mobster story that brings in elements of mystery, suspense, intrigue, and BDSM.

Martinez, crime lord, and Lucia, law enforcement. Opposites who have chemistry which drew them together despite their career differences. I did appreciate how the author developed their relationship including the blindside adult content scenes. The author did her research in providing a credible and realistic slant with regards to the BDSM aspects for which I'm grateful for. More times than not, a scene is played out purely based on the hotness scale. Not going to give anything away, it was refreshing to have the physical and psychological side of things including the aftermath consequences addressed as they were.

Secondary characters did add value to the world building as they interacted with the main characters. I did have my favorites though I really would have appreciated if the cast of secondary characters as a whole had been more impactful and meaningful to the overall story.

This book is broken into two distinct parts with part one being the obvious stronger of the two. In the second part I felt there was more 'filler' content than meaningful substance. Additionally, as I started to reach the end fourth of the story it was becoming apparent the story would end in a cliffhanger as it was impossible, in my mind, to wrap up all the open ended subplots. No spoiler info. Just wanted to share that for anyone who might have a similar thought or concern, no cliffie. The story does have an ending that won't leave you wondering. My issues have more to do with the overall flow and credibility of the story itself. Overall though, individual scenes were choppy and lack cohesion.

I did enjoy this book more than I thought because of the suspenseful mystery and twist & turns that occur during the course of the story. If there were half stars, I would have given this a 3.5 star rating but rated up because of the unexpected BDSM scene and blindside.

The Raw Touch was a fantastic psychological dark romance that left me glued to the pages. I loved Lucia and Martinez's connection and could not get enough of their sexual tension!

I love discovering new to me authors, especially the dark stories. What happened to Lucia was a tragedy but her resilience as a result of overcoming this was testament to her strength. Martinez was sexy and alpha but such a contradiction to what I would perceive a gang leader to be like. I loved it so much! But while I loved the dark feel of the story and was addicted to their passion and the hurdles that Lucia faced, the second half of the story felt like a different book. It didn't have that edgy and intense feel the first chapters had. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. Regardless, this was a great read! 4 stars! ~Ratula

This is a new author for me. I really enjoyed this book. It is defiantly on the darker side, not one for anyone with triggers. Even with the "darker side" it shows real emotions, tenderness, compassion, devotion and some humor. Lucia's back story to her character is really emotional to read, you just want to reach thru the pages and hug her. I was really happy with the way her character was written as a strong woman even with the tragic past she had. Martinez handled Lucia in my eyes how a true man should, after learning her past. Made my heart cry......
I did however find the ending just a bit, I dunno........off maybe? I guess I was just hoping for more.

I am voluntarily leaving my review after reading an ARC of this book.

Gutwrenching book

This book tore my heart to pieces and slowly put it back together again. It was a dark read, diving into Lucies background was gutwrenching. But slowly we watch how she learns to trust Martinez.

Lucia has a twisted sense of what's right and wrong, which I really enjoyed. It was definitely something different than other books I've read before.

And Martinez, well, I loved him so much. He was nothing at all like what my first impression lead me to believe. Definitely worth reading!

This story was extremely difficult for me to read. I could not finish the story after reading the scene at 19%. Therefore it is only fair I not offer a rating for this story.

This is my personal opinion and should have zero influence on your experience with the story.

Warning: This book has triggers for those that are sensitive to them. If you are, maybe this is not the book for you.

That being said. This is a twisted story, dark romance doesn't even begin with this book. I was shocked and in awe in various part of the story, at the characters and at the author for being able to write this.

It's not my first Serena Akeroyd book. In fact, her name on the cover was the reason I asked for the ARC in the first place. I know I loved her writing style and gut wrenching characters. I was not disappointed.

You can definitively call this characters anti-heroes because they are so far from perfect and good that it's incredible. I got hooked from the beginning, because I love characters with darker pasts, but also because the story was not going to let me put the book down for one second.

I read this all in one sitting. I also cried with this story because it touch me, it really did.

Let's not explore the sexy side of the book in this review. I can't even begin with that part. It was so well done, so hot... and twisted... and hot... and incredible mind twisting.

I would recommend this book if you love characters that are dark to the society they live in, but good in their core. The problem is, nobody sees the good in them. Only another fellow dark soul can see, and that's what happened here.

OK. The bad feels
The story jumps around a lot from past, past past and present.
Parent are (yawn) again shown as one dimensional unfeeling, oblivious people, leaving the h to flounder and have an excuse for what seemed to be fairly psychotic behaviour from the outset.
The cover is confusingly jacked up.

Now to the good feels
Too often the biggest issue a h faces is her cooling chai latte on her way to a job that puts her like a speed bump in the path of the multi billionaire who immediately becomes besotted with her.
This. Is. Not.That.Story

Thankfully

Loved the premise of this, and the eerie shock value of the opening chapter.
There were a few challenging subjects that were tackled head on - unapologetically.

Writing style is solid and readable without too much tell-y telling and more showing.
Great to have a strong, if slightly, OK OK, Very f&cked up h

Would I read Aheroyd again? Yes, but she's kinda on probation with me.

Still, a solid 4 stars for this

The Raw Touch is a twisted, dark and gritty read that will break your heart and then turn around and piece it back together again. The author's writing style and complex, multilayered characters pull you into their story and take you on their dark and twisted journey.
Lucia is not your typical heroine. She is strong and resilient and survived things that would break most. Her backstory left me shocked, cringing, and shedding a few tears. As leader of The Lobos Rojos Martinez is ruthless yet just. He is used to getting what he wants and will do whatever is necessary to get it. What he wants is Lucia and he is determined to keep his she-wolf. I loved how their relationship developed and how they balanced each other out.
The Raw Touch is a dark romance with subjects that may be triggers for some. That said this dark, twisted, and emotional real will keep you captivated until the very end.

I wasn't expecting this story. When it started I was like what? How is this part of the story and then it clicked for me and I couldn't put it down.
Lucia is messed up, damaged and so not what I was expecting in a heroine. The story she showed me left me in tears and in shock. I had to stop and process a couple of the scenes, they were so well written I could visualize it and the images were not ones I thought I'd be seeing!
Martinez, I can't even describe him adequately. This ruthless Mob Boss was as big a surprise to me as he must have been to Lucia!
And yes this story is dark, it has some very disturbing and gritty moments but they're needed to get the full scope of Lucia and Martinez.
I have a feeling we will be seeing more of them, or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part?

This is a very dark story and it has a lot of possible triggers, but it is a fantastic book if dark is your thing. I got sucked in quickly and couldn't put it down until I had finished the last page. Lucia is one of those characters that make you sit up and pay attention. She didn't have a good childhood, and it affects how she lives her life as an adult. Martinez is just pure evil, in the best possible way, and he is the reason I loved this one so much. Without giving any of the plot away, I can only tell you that this one is very intense, has a lot of twists, and will rip your heart right out of your chest. If you love broken characters, strong story lines, and love living on the edge you must read it!

Can I just say WOW! What a great story that makes you want more. The story is one that will have you feeling for the characters, you just can't help yourself. There's Lucia who doesn't like to be touched and has done stuff while undercover that would make the toughest guy cringe but when Martinez makes a deal with her everything changes.

Be prepared for dark stuff in this book but it's all part of Lucia's world. But it's also a love story in it's own way. A story that when you start it be prepared to want to finish in one sitting. A definite must read if you can. I received a copy under no obligation.

Lucia, working undercover, was completely at odds with crime boss Martinez. He intends to make her pay for her actions, but not in the way Lucia expected. This book was about a tough woman fighting her own battles and a man who is set on bringing her to heel, regardless of what has to be done, but his feelings start to get in the way. I enjoyed the twists as well as the way Lucia held her own in an impossible situation.

Dark. Empowering.

This book wasn't what I expected. There's a lot going on in its pages, some of it graphic and potentially triggering.

Lucia is damaged and her path back from the darkness is a tough one. There's a hook for a potential sequel, one I'll be keen to read when it appears.

I'm disappointed by the book's updated shirtless guy cover art, the original cover image was much more evocative in my opinion.

Beautifully written and realistic

Serena never let's me down! This book was beautifully written and dealt with trauma and PTSD in a much more realistic way than a lot of books I have read. For victims of sexual assault or sexual torture, this book could have triggers. However, I thought it was a thrilling story and sucked me in from the very beginning. Would absolutely recommend!!

This book was very interesting. Dealt with some intense subject matter. It was almost perfect. The author has a very different writing style which added to some areas that needed to be fleshed out and if not rushed ( the ending for example) it ended up taking away from the story.

Still very good and I hope there will be more in the future that gives a better resolution for these characters and even Matteo.

A Dark Romance!
First I must warn you that there are some potential disturbing scenes with dubious consent that may be offensive to the reader so please be warned before you buy this book.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.   Our heroine in this book by Serena Akeroyd is not the least bit like I expected.  Lucia is a very damaged soul who is a cop. She has been undercover and she is really good at what she does. But when she comes back to 'normal' policing, she doesn't feel 'right'. What she doesn't know is that the Mob Boss, Martinez, has been watching her for some years now and he's waiting for the moment to claim her as he wants her despite knowing that she's a cop.  What he doesn't realise is that Lucia can't bear to be touched due to what happened to her many years ago that some women wouldn't have survived.  When Martinez makes a 'deal' with her what will the implications be? She has handed over the evidence that got his brother slammed in prison. What will the rest of the gang think of his now being with her?  How many lives will it effect? Do they stand a chance or is there all too much going against them? To find out you need to grab yourself a copy as it was compulsive reading for me.  It is a very emotional story that will pull at your heart strings.  This is the first time that I've read anything by Serena but it will most certainly not be the last. This book is powerful and the author has such a fantastic command of the English language and has used it here  to create atmosphere and some exceptional characters in this dark romance.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED

Incredible, Scintillating, Touch of Dark, Explosion of Emotions!!

Lucia had a strict sense of right and wrong since she was a young girl. She is tops in her class at the police academy, but graduates a year late due to an event which effects the remainder of her life. Working undercover in a gang she is met with the dilemma of earning her way into the gang by killing a cop. As he is “dirty” her decision becomes easier.

After some time in the gang and reaching a high level, she is able to put the “bad” gang members behind bars. The leader Martinez is a fair man with a moral (if bent) code so she leaves him in place. That moral code requires he “punish” her when he discovers she turned in his gang members. As they had an attraction, the punishment becomes very personal. Lucia’s earlier event makes becoming personal impossible for her, so she must turn the tables on Martinez and disappear.

As this story unfolds, and the details of the Lucia’s history are revealed; we are treated to a story of strength and fortitude. When Martinez persists in his search for Lucia, and investigation reveals what Lucia has gone through, he realizes if he does not handle the situation exceedingly carefully he could break her for good.

Fascinating read!!! A story of darkness and complexity alternates with caring and tenderness. An amazing journey in which the reader has a front seat!!

Serena Akeroyd a new to me author and I can say what an amazingly twisted mindset to create this story The Raw Touch. I thought the read was busy it had a lot of things going on, but once you're caught you feel the need to continue. To feel the characters Lucia and Martinez, get into their heads.
Lucia seemed to have that darkness as a young girl, her doting grandfather tried to steer her in the right path. Sometimes it worked other times not so much. Her strength, as well as her resolve, always shadowed by the darkness that was just under the surface.
Martinez a powerhouse with a small army at his fingertips. He's almost a contradiction to himself in his beliefs. But you can't mistake him for too good a guy. He's determined to get what he wants and goes to any means to get it.
There are other players in this story supportive and dangerous and when all the dust clears who will be standing? Passion, love, betrayal and death. A great story that is dark and not for the faint of heart. I read and reviewed this voluntarily and recommend it to the dark-themed addicts. Read the warning from the Author.

There is sometimes a very thin line between good and evil. For Lucia that line becomes almost non-existent. From a young age she has had a skewed vision as to how things should be. It’s her grandfather that keeps her focused.

Lucia has spent a long time deep undercover to take down most of a Los Lobos. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough to take down the big boss, Martinez but she did get his brother Matteo and most of his upper echelon.

Martinez now wants his pound of flesh, from her, in the form of her being his.
The attraction had always been there, and now he is making demands Lucia isn’t sure she can fulfill. At least not under his terms.

Sexy and demanding with overshadowing of a past event that is slowly revealed.
All leading to fast paced drama as she runs far and fast. So many twists and turns as Lucia aka Eva, maneuvers her way through life that becomes very complicated thanks to the Martinez brothers.

Enter, the dark twisted world of Lucia or is it Eve?

This book its dark twisted and somehow perfectly sweet. Not all books can be roses and sunshine, Lucia has dark secrets and Martinez does everything in his power to uncover them. I don't think he was quite ready to face the truth. But in order to win the girl, he may have to lose himself in the process.... or does he? This book has triggers, with a strong heroine who doesn't realize she is strong enough to fight the darkness of her past, but when you have the right person by your side anything is possible, right?

I wish it were not a stand alone as I feel this was just an introduction into Lucia and Martinez. It's left me feeling like the story was incomplete. Great read, but for all of the books I've read from Serena, this one feels unfinished. Maybe it's the beautiful masterminds intention, time will tell.

Wow!

From the beginning of the book to the end you were left wondering what was going to happen next. This was so well written that although I usually have certain triggers they didn't bother me in the telling of Lucia's story.
Serena Akeroyd has such a way with words that I was left with wanting to read more.
Lucia/Eva Kingston lived a life filled with much neglect and trauma that she doesn't know who she really is. Especially after four year of deep undercover in the Lobos.
Kudos to the way Ms.Akeroyd wrote about her story and I hope it doesn't end here. Be prepared for the weird when reading this book and I highly recommend this book for those interested in gangs, their inner workings and dark romance.

This is not for the faint heated as it contains flashbacks which may trigger some readers. Saying that I found that the way in which Eva/Lucia manages to find her peace with herself and her past was amazing. although from the opening scenes of the book, one would think that maybe she already had a flawed sense of self.

Her and Martinez were certainly a strange couple, but as we read on we find that maybe this is exactly what Eva needs to function without reservations. Her perverse sense of Justice was amazing to behold, and for me I found that this was a survivor in all the ways that counted.

Loved it and would certainly recommend this book

This is a gritty story that grabbed my heart and my mind. Lucia is a strong character who has a ballsy, take no prisoners attitude but that’s not surprising given her horrific back story. Her relationship with Martinez was brilliantly crafted, with expertly placed chapters of Lucia’s past throughout the story, adding depth to her character. I found the story ended a little to quick for my liking but maybe that because I had been so captivated with their story, I had become greedy for more of Lucia and Martinez. I’ve found a new author to follow and I’m now checking out Serena’s other books.

Wow this is my first book by Serena Akeroyd but will not be the last. I've been reading books that are different from what I usually read and I hit jackpot with this one. It's the completely different but the storyline draws you in from the very beginning, yes it's a dark romance so there will be part that will be difficult to digest but I highly recommend for readers to give this book a chance you will not be disappointed.

A good read, but not for everyone

The story of Lucia and Martinez is a complicated one. They are both dark, broken characters with a dark and twisted past. Their broken, twisted edges could probably for well together, but the character Lucia trying to dominate an Alpha character like Martinez just throws the story off for me. It goes against his whole brooding, dark persona and gives the plot a forced feel. Despite this, it is still a good story and I did enjoy reading it

This is a dark story with lots of twists and turns to it. There are parts that are in the past and others in the present that allows the reader to understand more about the characters and why they are the way they are as well as the situations they are now in. As with all dark books there are triggers in this one and it is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea! Well written by a new author to me and one I shall be looking out for in the future.
