After the sudden death of her husband, Haley believed nothing worse could happen. She was wrong. New widow, Haley Colbrooke travels to Ashdown to meet her husband’s family and to visit his grave. The shocking news of their recent marriage is awkward enough. That her brother in-law is Lance’s identical twin is worse.
Given her circumstances, she accepts the invitation to stay, which sets in motion a chain of events that will risk Haley losing all she has left. Rather than finding solace, she is drawn into past tragedies and deadly secrets.
Perhaps coming to the family estate was a terrible mistake.
It was kind of easy to figure out certain details but not how they affected everything. I am a bit sorry that we didn't see a better connection or resolution to a certain person after all was said and done.
This could have been really good. It was an original story. In the hands of someone like Mary Stewart or Daphne duMaurier it would have been outstanding. Her writing skills are rather pedestrian, definitely not up to par. I've read several of her books, hoping they'd get better, but no. Her stories are all pretty good, but the writing drives me crazy. The thing that made me stop trying though is the fact that she doesn't know the difference between may and might or will and would and uses the wrong tense every time. After while I found myself shouting at the books every time she made that mistake.
As a quick read, this is perfect. There were quite a few intrigues happening in the storyline. The reader is privvy to Sybil's machinations and one wonders whether she will be successful. The Lance/Laurence storyline was slightly confusing and was eventually explanined at the end. I will re-read this book to clarify these issues regarding Lance's return to his ancestral home. Did he have a fall and suffer amnesia again, or was it simply slipping back into his previous mental state?
Waterboarding other books by this author I wanted to try this one. I loved the characters and the vivid description of the manner and stables This author takedown back in time to a more gentle era Looking forward to your next collection although I'd love for you to write more about this family and maybe give the sister her happy ever after
The story grabs the reader from the first page and keeps you interested right up until the end. Interesting characters who all share their points of view, a murder, a mystery, and an unknown “creature” lurking about the estate. Aside from too many editorial errors this is a well written gothic suspense.
I actually really liked this one. Something about the plot, characters and history grabbed me. The mystery, overall, wasn't hard to guess, but there were enough surprising smaller twists that I was sorry when it ended. I wish this author had another book that felt more like this one.
This was a very good gothic story. I loved that it took place at a gothic manor, very atmospheric with beautiful scenery. I loved the characters, both good & bad, & the romance was beautiful. The book had surprising twists & turns, and the conclusion was perfect! It was both well-written & engrossing~I loved it!
I very much enjoyed the story. In one section in particular the identity of who the living twin was became confusing. I would have liked to know more about the chrone and how the disfigured child had been brought up. Over all a good book.
The storyline is not predictable making it an enjoyable read. The story flows well without any need to back up and see if you missed something. The ending was a surprise and a happy one.
With a lot of the classic hallmarks of gothic literature, this short novel was a delight to read. It’s definitely easy to understand the plot while still being spooky, so I would recommend this to younger readers as something to read for Halloween.
