Coming to You Live

Rate this book
A Newsflesh novella from the New York Times bestselling author that brought you Feed , Mira Grant.

Shaun and Georgia Mason got out. That's the story people tell, anyway. They told the truth and they lived happily ever after, somewhere in the wilds of Canada. But running away is complicated, and when circumstances force them to return to what they left behind, they'll have to face the consequences of their own actions . . . and the actions of others.

Mira also writes as Seanan McGuire.

Born and raised in Northern California, Mira Grant has made a lifelong study of horror movies, horrible viruses, and the inevitable threat of the living dead. In college, she was voted Most Likely to Summon Something Horrible in the Cornfield, and was a founding member of the Horror Movie Sleep-Away Survival Camp, where her record for time survived in the Swamp Cannibals scenario remains unchallenged.

Mira lives in a crumbling farmhouse with an assortment of cats, horror movies, comics, and books about horrible diseases. When not writing, she splits her time between travel, auditing college virology courses, and watching more horror movies than is strictly good for you. Favorite vacation spots include Seattle, London, and a large haunted corn maze just outside of Huntsville, Alabama.

Mira sleeps with a machete under her bed, and highly suggests that you do the same.

I didn’t know this had already been released before.. and I didn’t even realize it until I’ve read half of it. I’m proud to say I have a great memory!

I mentioned in a status update that this story would need a very good ending for me to give a rating higher than 1 or 2 stars. The ending was on par with the story.

On the one hand, I do not really understand the point of having this story, on the other hand – of course, people are curious about the ‘afterwards’ part. It is somewhat unfortunate that the fourth book in the trilogy (heh) that followed a different group of people was set in the same time period as the first book in the series, otherwise it would have been the perfect book for a little cameo ‘this is what they are doing now’ to occur. That’s ‘easier’, in a way, than a full on story. At least for me. Otherwise you get a story like this – one that many liked, but that I didn’t. It was way too wordy, I mentioned in the same or different status update I’ve already referenced, that the used 99.9% more words than it needed to (actually, I worded it differently – that it could have been told with 99.9% fewer words).

Long and short – not a story I needed, and I realize that it is my fault that I read it. I read it because I generally like, no, love the short stories that got released along with the ‘trilogy’. But, not really a story I liked – and I kind of knew hat going in (and no, I am not rating it the way I am because of preconceptions, otherwise the short story I read between finishing this one and writing this review would also have a rating around 2 stars, instead of 5).

ETA: putting this review into the review box caused me to look at my shelves. You know one of the reasons I probably didn't like this story? Spotted it when I spotted what I'd already put on my shelves. 'Zombies'. 'Horror'. There is psychological trauma and a bunch of PTSD going on in this story, but no horror, and the only zombies representation was one wolf (if I recall correctly - Shaun is mentioned going out and 'getting' various types of zombies, animal or human, but the reader doesn't see that, just told. So this really was a navel gazing story with no action. I'm going to have to take a ton of shelves off this book I'd put on preread. No this isn't a horror, no this isn't a zombie book, it's barely post-apocalyptic - only that because . . . it is, but . . . bah).

Rating: 2.0

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

This is a novella set in the Newsflesh world. I wouldn’t recommend reading this story unless you’ve read all three books in the original trilogy (Feed, Deadline, Blackout). If you haven’t read the other short stories, that isn’t an issue, though there are some that are mentioned. You also don’t have to have read Feedback (listed as #4, but chronologically takes place during the same time as Feed, but with a different group of bloggers).

I really can’t tell you anything about this story without spoiling the original trilogy for you. Let me give you a brief summary of this series. George and Sean Mason are a brother/sister team of bloggers in a zombie filled world. Anything that is over 40 pounds can become a zombie. Blood outside the body can be infectious. There are systems in place to keep people safe, but nothing is foolproof. George and Sean run After the End Times, which reports on the news. Sean is an Irwin (named for Steve Irwin). He likes to find zombies and poke them with a stick. Irwins are known for their reckless need to get a story. George is a newsy, she wants to get the facts out to people, from a safer location.

If you haven’t tried this series, then I recommend you give it a try. This series is full of really great characters. I love all the characters we meet with After the End Times. Such a wonderfully diverse group of people. They are a lot of fun. The world is really great too. Things like zombie moose and bears. Plus, all the things put into place to keep everyone safe from zombies and the issues that those things can cause.

**SPOILERS for previous books in the series**

This book takes place after the entire trilogy. Sean and George are hiding out in Canada. That is until George gets a nosebleed and passes out. They call the only doctor they can trust, Dr. Abby. Dr. Abby forces them to come see her for an in-person exam.

It was great to spend time with George and Sean. They are a great team. We also get to see some of the other medical professionals we’ve met in the earlier books. It takes a whole team to solve George’s issues. She is a medical miracle, after all. Some of the old gang also make an appearance.

This isn’t the greatest novella I’ve ever read. There isn’t some huge beast to be tackled. The only mystery is what is going on medically with George. I do think, that for fans of the series, it is great to spend some time with George and Sean and the gang. I do really love these characters and love any time I get to spend with them.

Narration
Christine Lakin continues to do a great job with narration of this series (though she doesn’t narrate all of the books, she does do some of them). I like the voices she uses for each of the different characters. She does a great job with male and female voices. I really love her voice for Mahir. He’s an Indian by way of United Kingdom (because India was lost to zombies even before he was born). I feel like she really captured his accent.

**I like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Goddamn, this is exactly how a Newsflesh novella should be. It’s fun, it’s high-stakes, it’s something new, and it gives me more time with Shaun and Georgia Mason, the most enjoyable action protagonists ever. I would say I could live in this world forever, but I’m beginning to think that it’s more that I could live with Shaun and Georgia forever, whatever they’re up to.

I really think I’d love it more if I had read the first book in order. That’s my bad! I’m a sucker for a happy ending. The borderline incest thing was weird.

This was a great novella for those who have been wondering what George and Shaun have been up to since the end of the Feed trilogy. We get to visit with the "siblings", and see them dealing with the fallout from previous events. George is learning that there are possible side effects of being a clone and Shaun is dealing with the continued trauma of George's death and resurrection. Along the way we get to visit with several old friends from the series and get a bit of an update on how things are progressing in zombie land. I definitely wouldn't read this novella before finishing the entire original trilogy, but for those who have finished and want more then this is a great little story.

So I read this earlier in the year, somewhere in March or April - whenever we went into lockdown and I binged the entire Newsflesh series - highly recommend this level of anxiety escalating reading for you all, btw. For some reason, Goodreads deleted my review. So, I guess I have to read it again. This is not a bad thing, in fact, Mira Grant tends to push me into short story binge reading, which will be very good for my lagging 2020 reading challenge numbers. Idk why I chose this year to read the Wheel of Time series or The Tale of Genji, or any of the many ridiculously 1000+ page books I've chosen to read. I comfort myself knowing that we're all making questionable choices this year, and 2020 is almost over (insert superstitious hand movements and mouthed prayers here).

I’m pretty sure I read this novella before in another collection or something but i have no regrets about buying it this week and reading it again. Loved having another Shaun and George story and kinda makes me want to re-read the whole series again.

I didn't realize I was reading part of a series until it was too late. Interested enough to pick up from the beginning now though. One of my favorite things about it is having intrigue on a national level taking place in the Pacific Northwest.

I don't usually read the side stories before reading the main series first. I pick up this book because I'm a sucker for Firefly content, but I did not stop after finishing San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats. One story lead to another, and here we are at the end of the book.

Of all the stories in the Rise collection, this one made me most aware of feeling like a stranger in a room full of people who knew each other. The story alternate between Georgia and Shaun's perspectives. They meetup with former antagonists who are now allies, and friends they have said goodbye to. So many spoilers I hope I will forget by the time I get to them in the main books.

While most of the stories in this series are about surviving the zombie apocalypse, this story focuses more on the two protagonist codependent relationship. You get glimpses of what they have done to survive. While I enjoyed the story, I think it would hit differently if I have read the main series first.

Not a new story! Previously published in 2016

This is a great short story and a wonderful way to the up questions from the end of the Newsflesh series, but, contrary to the publication date listed on kindle and on Amazon, this novella was previously released in another collection. I love Mira Grant and her other pseudonyms and am always eager for something new to pop up, so I bought this as soon as I got an alert from Amazon. Apparently, this is the first time it is being published in its own as an ebook, hence the new, 2018, publication date. I am disappointed that the author would approve this slightly underhanded method of making more money, but I bet it was the publishing house and Ms. Grant has no idea of their shenanigans.

I'm very glad that despite my dissatisfaction with Book 4 of this series, Feedback, I chose to continue on and read the last two Newsflesh novellas. They were the best of all the novellas, and this one so beautifully lands the plane of this series arc, it was everything I'd hoped to see again. The world is still the world, ethical and relational issues abound, and life is messy. This story tied together pretty much everything built and established in all the books and novellas, except as if book 4 didn't exist. Which I was COMPLETELY good with. This was a very fitting ending to a terrific series.

Solid work, return of some favorite characters. Only real complaint is that I was hoping for more concentration on growth and less on one of the weirdest plot twists of all time. We don't seem to find away around that plot twist and the overall growth, considering the passage of time, leaves a bit to be desired.

I love this universe and would truly enjoy seeing a few more stories set here, but perhaps it is time to engage with new characters, or really allow for the exploration of the world through a collection of works ala the short stories.

I have to admit Sean and Georgia are my favorite characters in this series, so anytime I can read a new story with them in it I'm there. I especially liked this one because we get to check in with them to see how they are doing. While I hate that things aren't going so great for Georgia, I'm glad that it forced them to get back in contact with those that love and miss them. I think they need the contact as well. Going forward it will be nice to see how these changes affect them, hopefully in good ways all around.

Enjoyment level: 4🌟
Writing Quality: 4🌟
Audiobook Narration: 4🌟

This novella was born after the events of the Newflesh trilogy so do not, I repeat do NOT, read this one before devouring those (and I assure you, you will devour them).

Coming to You Live didn't possess me with the same fevered excitement as the trilogy did, but I don't think it was meant to. Those three books were everything, this just the cherry on top.

I had fun with it. It left me wanting more. And once again, I am so, so, so glad it takes place in a fictional world.

Nice continuation after the main trilogy, and nice to see the gang all back together again. I liked seeing realistic consequences of cloning play out in the setting .

Recommended, but preferably after reading the primary trilogy, and probably after Do Not Taunt the Octopus (though that's probably less crucial).

I did not realize I needed to read Feed first so I was lost.

I genuinely thought they were a biological bro & sis having *relations* for a while before I realized:
1. One is a clone
2. They’re adopted.
Thank. God. I just finished the Mortal Instruments and I can’t handle another weird brother-sister relationship this week.

Overall, even without the context of the main story this was a JOURNEY. I quite enjoyed it. I may revisit after reading Feed.

Decent addition to the Newsflesh series. Picks up after the end of the last main book and shows what happened to the Masons as well as setting the stage for more stories going forward in a quick easy to read story

Always enjoy Mira Grant stuff and I "think" this is all of the current stories (website isn't up to date)

Book hit all the nice nostalgia elements for Shaun and George and expanded the world nicely. It was what I wanted to see--more Shaun and George, but I didn't feel like it had the heart of the earlier books. Were I not already in love with the original series, this one would have gotten a higher rating, but since it had to stand up to its predecessors, it got knocked down a few pegs.

I really enjoy the Newsflesh series. I’m a zombie book lover and enjoy this series initially because of this. I stay for all of the additional story lines because the author has created a rich world with characters that are intriguing and well rounded. I well understand why this series has won awards. Those who like this unusual genre will be drawn in by this new refreshing look.

I've read this novella once before, but I guess I didn't list it in my GoodReads. It was a good follow-up to the Feed trilogy and other related stories. However, the plot itself wasn't nearly as compelling or interesting as the original books. There wasn't as much world-building; it was more of a character piece.

Unnecessary return to the Feed world. Georgia and Shaun are now living an extremely private, off the grid life in Canada when complications with Georgia's health make them again seek out Dr. Abbey and the EIS. OK for hard core fans, but everyone else should skip unless you've read the Feed trilogy.

1.5 ⭐

This a pretty underwhelming novella of Shawn and Georgia post Newsflesh trilogy. Their story was predictable and their old friends reuniting with them wasnt anything I cared about since they were mostly betrayed Shawn and George cut off contact to hide in Canada when that's literally what they said they were going to do at the end of book 3. Had to force myself to finish this one

An excellent Newsflesh follow up novella

Coming To You Live picks up after the Newsflesh trilogy and brings the whole gang back together when Georgia starts having medical problems while living in the Canadian wilds. Its another excellent supplement to the trilogy. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed the Newsflesh books and want to know what happens after Blackout!

Review:
This is a novella based in the universe of Grants Hugo-nominated Newsflesh trilogy. If you liked the trilogy you will like the short story.

NOTE: in 2016 Grant published the book "Rise" which contains this and other stories.
