The capture of an arms dealer’s spoiled lover should’ve been a win for the humans struggling to survive their harsh lives in the slums. Powerless and outnumbered, it seems like only a matter of time before Romulus betrays the Butcher. But when Kieran realizes their prisoner is none other than his stepbrother, he has to face the harsh truths he’s been avoiding for too long. Torn between loyalty for his new family of humans and the witch he has more than brotherly feelings for, Kieran must make a decision that could leave him with nothing.

R. Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slave driver who thinks it's terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers. She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. She'd love it if you'd say hello!

Read it in one breath. Kieran visit the new prisoner... hold by shackles. When he faced the witch, he is stunned to see his beautiful brother Romulus, who'd been selling his ass to Abel 'the Butcher', arms dealer.
They want information about Abel and his business.
As being part of The Rebellion Kieran can't tell them that this man is his brother.
Kieran had always sweet eyes for Romulus but he'd been forbidden. This fact could never see the daylight!

They want information from Romulus and doing hurtful nasty things to get it.
Kieran seems the one to get information from his brother... only Romulus is a good liar.... you can never tell if he's telling the truth or not.

Being vulnerable and helpless without his magic Romulus can only rely on Kieran. The longer he is taken as prisoner the more miserable Romulus gets.

Both brothers feel very attracted to each other. There is a lot of distrust and disrespect but also a lot of desire, longing and yearning between them.
Kieran really wants to get his brother out of the cellar but this will cost him his own life.
He isn't aware that his brother has more influence than he could ever imagine.

Great written story, very captivating. Human and witches are the main characters, but there are also vampires and werewolves around.
Conversations, tension, angst, sex, power exchange and sweetness all taking place in a few square footage....that's pretty awesome !

A Joyfully Jay review.

Spoiled is billed as a standalone. In fact, the authors state in the blurb, “Though Spoiled is set in The Fate of the Fallen/Status Quo world, this is a standalone work. These characters do not appear in the FotF/SQ books, and there are no spoilers for the series.” Having not read the other books in the series, I cannot confirm if these are new characters, but I will disagree that this story stands alone.

I had a few struggles with this book. The world is not explained at all. Kiernan lives with a group of humans that are seen as the resistance after supes now rule the world. Supes consist of witches, vampires, and werewolves, and it’s all mentioned in a brief and casual manner as if the reader is supposed to understand the world in which the characters live. The story opens in a compelling manner as Kiernan sees that their newest prisoner is his stepbrother that he hasn’t seen in many years. But, there is no character development or backstory shown. We learn that Kiernan was largely ignored by his parents when he did not develop magical abilities, but it’s not discussed how he came to be where he is. Romulus’ past is just as secretive as while we learn he did have a better relationship with the parents for a time because of his magic, there was a fallout there as well that is not explained.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

I have been going backwards and forwards with this review for days and I think the problem is that in my own head I can’t decide what to call this story. It’s definitely not a romance although there are moments that have the feels. It’s not a horror although the first few chapters that include torture are quite brutal and difficult to read. It’s not a mystery as almost from the beginning we have all the facts. It also ended too easily for me and is a definite HFN rather than a HEA. One of the biggest issues for me was that I felt the story didn’t really go anywhere because of the lack of resolution at the end. I needed to know more about the world and I wonder whether even though this is a standalone the fact that it is set in a world the author has previously written about meant that I lacked the finer detail.

Romulus is described as the “whore of the butcher” and that is part of the plot that I would have liked to know more about. The elusive “butcher” is not shown in a very good light but towards the end when we finally met him he seemed to me to be one of the most stable and sane characters in the story. I never understood their relationship so when Romulus is captured by a group of humans who are struggling to survive and beaten and tortured for information I couldn’t see why he would start an affair of sorts with his stepbrother who is living with the rebels, particularly when he has been half beaten to death and is trapped in a cellar with a collar on his neck to stop him casting spells. Romulus is a witch but seemingly with very limited powers and Keiran his brother is a failed witch who never had any powers manifest and was shunned by his family as a bit of a failure.

Who seduces who? I’m not sure but Romulus and Kieran end up together until Kieran puts together a plan to help his brother escape before the slightly bloodthirsty members of the group end up killing him. But where does that leave the brothers and the “butcher” who has been missing his supposedly spoiled boy toy for over a week? We are left wondering how the three move forward and how the dynamics would work out in the end.

I received this book by the author for an honest opinion
I was exited to read this book its right up my alley on what I best like to read, vampires, witches, werewolves and anything else that goes bump in the night😳.
This book is about Kieran who after being concluded that he has no magic of his own though he's from a magical family goes out into the world by himself a human. Years later when after a war between the supes ( paranormal creatures) and the humans the power balance is not quite in favour of the humans but with the supes taking control. Those who don't step into line and allign themselves with the supes are left on the barest existence on the outskirts in slums with barely any amenities to survive. Kiernan joins the rebel group so there's safety in numbers and not through any burning need to help take down the supes who prospered.
Romulus is a witch that is now known as the butcher's whore by the rebels and is captured in a honey trap. Surprised to see his step brother as part as the motley rebel gang.
This is the story of trying to rescue Romulus even though Kieran does harbour some resentment on what he perceives Romulus to be the golden child when he was found to be lacking in magic himself, though he still can't extinguish that tiny flame that he's always harboured for his step brother.
First off I thought this book was good but though you can read it as a standalone I think it'd be better to read this author's previous series first so your not quite scrambling to get the facts of where this world is and its circumstances. The first 50% of this book is basically Romulus in the cellar and Kiernan going back and forth on what he knows and being distrustful and being beaten for information on the butcher's trading routes and deals.
I felt it could of been condensed a little and instead maybe more of a note on their previous life and of course how Romulus became the butcher's whore and even Kiernan acknowledging his father's death and his mother's life now.
There was a few mistakes and of course the book didn't really have an ending I feel, I would also like to know what the deal Romulus has with the butcher as I feel its a bit of a contradiction whether he loves him or not. I'm hoping there's another book coming up and I hope maybe a menage between all three would be good but who knows?
A really good book and I'm looking forward to the next though I'm now off to read the previous series. I love this world the author has created.

A bit dark but intriguing

This is not a typical romance, something that should be blatantly clear from reading the blurb. A good amount of it is spent watching one of the heroes be imprisoned and sometimes tortured. It raises questions - in both the characters’ and readers’ minds - about who the “good” and “bad” guys really are in the war between the supes and humans.

But the backdrop of the imprisonment makes the gradual feelings and trust growing between the two main characters more poignant. No artificial relationship drama is needed with this setting - it’s got plenty of tension already. I wasn’t sure where the story was going to go or how it would end, but I’m happy with it. Even happier, knowing there is now a sequel! I definitely wanted more.

Damn...These authors know how to get your blood pumping....Kieran finding his step-brother is their captive....Their coming together even if it was in a cellar was hot....I love these two and I'm really really looking forward to Anticipation which follows this and gives us Romulus, Kieran and Abel...Oh boy that is going to be off the charts....Romi is a witch and being collared removing his powers leaves him distraught...but getting to know his step-brother better should make up for that.....It's rare I read paranormal but I'll never pass up these authors books x

This book states it is set in the Fate of the Fallen / Status Quo world but also states it stands alone. I have only read one of these books a while ago & found I was a little lost in the beginning, not understanding the world it was set in. It did become clearer as I read though..
Kieran & Romulus are step brothers who have not seen each other in 15 yrs. Romulus is captured by the Revolution / Resistance for being a witch an the boy toy of an arms dealer. It's here he is reunited with his brother.
The relationship between the brothers is complicated. Full of guilt, jealousy, mistrust and attraction. You could feel the helplessness of them both in each of their circumstances.
It ends with a HFN & I would be interested to see where the brothers end up given more time..

*I was gifted a copy from the authors for a totally honest, unbiased review.

Spoiled by R. Phoenix and Morgan Noel is a novel about Romulus and Kieran. Romulus is the spoiled witch lover of Abel, an arms dealer, and Kieran is a human who is involved in a band of rebels. Romulus had been captured by the human rebels and held hostage away from his spoiled life in order to get information about what Abel’s life and routine.Kieran is the medic of the rebels who ended up being the only one Romulus would talk with.

In a battle between the supernaturals and the humans where the humans are second and sometimes third class citizens who will do what they have to in order to survive, Kieran is torn between his self proclaimed family and the step brother that he was raised with.

Before going any further into my review, I want to lead with the disclaimer that this book involves what some may consider an “Ick” factor of romantic and sexual love between step brothers. Not that it bothered me any nor was it an issue but I want to let my readers know in advance. With that out of the way, I will continue on.

Spoiled is a stand alone story that is set in The Fate of the Fallen / Status Quo world. You don’t need to have read the rest of the series in order to understand what’s going on in this book. It gives a glimpse at the world as well as what is happening yet there are no spoilers for the rest of the series. I rather enjoyed the world and how it was set up. The twist of how the humans were lower class and forced into the slums while the supernaturals basically ruled was interesting to me. It gave an insight into things that weren’t normally written about. The character development was amazing and the world development was spot on. I absolutely loved the attention to detail that the authors had given in regards to how each side lived. Being able to visualize it in my mind drew me through the book and landed me right there with Romulus and Kieran.

My heart actually hurt for the two step brothers at times who were battling between their love for each other, the situation they were placed in from a very early age and the fact that neither of them seemed to understand where the other was coming from until they were shoved into this situation. Then to have Kieran take a turn and help Romulus escape from his prison in the cellar and Romulus return to save him was beautiful.

The ending left me wanting for more though. With Abel and Romulus together at the end and Romulus and Keiran together as well, The ending left me wondering if there might be a sequel to this book where the three of them end up getting together and involved in a more poly relationship? I could only hope…

I’m going to give this book two thumbs up and a must read to anyone who loves mm romance with a fantasy twist.

These ladies did it again. I don't know why I'm continually surprised at the unique take, fresh look and caliber of writing by these two. They are simply fantastic authors and this book is another notch on their belts. They. Nailed. It.

I'm a big fan of the Fate of the Fallen / Status Quo world that R. Phoenix created and Morgan Noel slid seamlessly into that world enhancing R. Phoenix's already brilliant stories. This story has elements of dark, BDSM and taboo. While it may not be as dark as some of what I've read in the FotF/SQ world it's absolutely swimming in taboo.

If you like reading stories that take you right to the edge and sometimes beyond (and I do) then you should give this book and the others set in this world a try.

Romulus is an intriguing character. One that you can never really get a bead on (something these authors excel at!). I mean, there are moments where you feel really bad for him and others where you wonder just what exactly his game is. I suspect that he's trying to balance his loyalties and his feelings between his step-brother and his protector, the Butcher.

Kieran is full of angst and anger at his step-brother as well as a large dose of the same directed at himself as he fights his feeling for Romulus. He's been treated poorly in a world that only respects and rewards the very powerful. He's fought and lived barely getting by with his chosen family of humans. He's definitely one of those characters that you will be rooting for.

This story will surprise you and keep you guessing right to the very end. A large part of it takes place in a cellar, a dirty dark cellar, and trust me when I tell you that I felt like I was in the cellar with them, feeling the need to wash after some of those scenes. What a great talent to be able to make someone feel what they read that strongly! It leaves just enough told to make me think and need to hear more about them and this world.

What would you do to survive?

I really loved this book! I'm not a fan of graphic violence, so the fact that most of the torture was kept off-page and just made evident through discussions and the resulting injuries and bruising suited me just fine. Still, there was enough of a fear factor that I was never sure if or when violence might occur. There was a moderate angst level for the characters, and me as the reader, and enough twists and turns and lies told that I wasn't sure who was playing or betraying whom. It made for a fascinating story. Romulus, especially, was an enigma - was he pawn or player, desperate little brother or clever manipulator? Kieran was a good man at his core, pressed to desperate measures to survive. I loved the ending, but I would love to see another story following these characters into the future. The intimate parts were steamy, and I liked the light BDSM and kink elements. Nothing is really as black and white as each character thinks, and the villains and victims are not so easily distinguished. Great love story, and thought-provoking, too.

I received a complimentary copy of this story from the authors. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Just wow! Terrific story-line with action, passion, vampires, werewolves and witches. I loved the characters and the world-building was great and the plot kept me glued to my kindle. The level of detail allowed me to visualize this story and the differences between each side.

So much history between Romulus and Kieran that is fraught with so many misunderstandings and confusion. There was some angst but not too much. i like these two together!

I loved how now as men,Romulus and Kieran save each other when they need it the most. i found the triumph of love and trust very satisfying, especially when the possibility of betrayal had such a high potential.

This was set in the world of The Fate of the Fallen, but you will not be lost or confused in this world it is so well done in this story. i would consider this a standalone read.

I received an ARC at no cost from the author

Highly recommend this story and author!

Another time and place, a fantasy land of witches, werewolves, vampires and humans. All of them fighting to survive and somehow co exist.
Trying to hide who you really are is sometimes the only way to survive...
For Kieran, being a witch with no power was once a problem, now it is keeping him alive. Working with the humans to take down a criminal, he finds himself treating a captive who he knows.
Romulus was stunned to come face to face with his stepbrother after years of silence. Being the Butcher's whore has made him a target.
Will Kieran be able to stay loyal to the humans or will a deep hidden longing for his brother be his downfall?
Well written, gripping story that will have you wanting love to win, even if it means the criminals live to fight another day!!

A devastatingly gorgeous captive and an unwilling captor full of doubts - what an interesting pair! They have a shared past, but do they have a future? In a world where humans are oppressed by supernatural beings, it's a question they both don't have an answer to. And yet... Despite that Romulus has something to hide and Kieran needs this information for the people he considers to be his family, it's more than this dilemma that binds them.
This story is set in the world of The Fate of the Fallen, but you don't need to have read this series to understand what's going on (though some things will be clearer if you have).

Not for the faint hearted. This is a story about making the most out of life. For the story-line of this the endings okay I'd definitely put it as a HFN not HEA considering the situation in time. I almost gave this away but kept reading.
Hmm who's being played? Truth in lies difficult what to believe even when there step brothers. Time does nothing when years of passing to relive when there both younger comes through again..  Parts of this book would not have been easy to write especially the torturing scenes. I didn't like Ram he's a mean one and definitely not Paul either.
Catching the Butcher's whore was a major coup for the rebellion as long as the collar worked at keeping is witch powers turned off. Kieran was summoned to make sure that kept working as he's their medic. Stopping dead in his tracks Kieran knew the drug dealers pet as his step brother, Romulus...
Romulus was the spoilt brother getting his witch powers while Kieran's powers never came. Kieran's jealousy's was blinding his judgement now. Turning a blind eye when Romulus being tortured and beaten. Seeking information about the Butcher's movements where the rebellions aim.
Triggers: voilence, water boarding telling. hostage situation, and step brothers sexing.

Pretty G.

Before starting this book we are told that we don't need to read the rest of the series before reading this story. And while that's technically accurate, a greater understanding of the world they are living in occasionally feels useful. That said, the story is pretty good. A few niggling errors have been missed. Enough to annoy my pedantic nature but not enough to pull you out of the story.

Excellent

I’ve fallen in love with the Fate of the Fallen series and can’t wait for the next book to come out. So I enthusiastically purchased the Spoiled book in hopes of reacquainting with my Fallen characters. Spoiled exists in the same time and environment but doesn’t meld with any of the original characters. This book could be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone. The same darkness flows through this book. I loved the scenes written for Romi and Kieran - smokin!!!

A wonderful story of two very interesting characters with a shared past. Kieran and Romulus are stepbrothers who haven't seen each other for years but now find each other again when Romulus, a witch, is captured. They have feelings for each other but not sure they can trust one another This story will keep you on the edge of your seat!

An amazing and exciting story full of adventure, suspense and passion. Good versus bad, however it’s tricky telling them apart. The lines were definitely blurred. Reading through the book I found it difficult to put down. The m/c’s were very compelling and so easy to be drawn to. I liked their interaction and loved the ending. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

Pretty good but story wasn’t all that compelling. I would have liked to know more about Romi and Kieran’s relationship when younger. It also seemed that they fell into sexual aspect of relationship out of desperate need for contact and some sense of humanity. Couldn’t blame them. But there really wasn’t much that showed us how that morphed to love. Not great but a decent read.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars.

Presented as a standalone but lacks details about the world these characters are living in.
There is probably just enough to get by but if you haven’t read the Fate of the Fallen series I think you are likely to struggle or feel like you are missing something.

In a world ruled by vampires, werewolves and powerful witches, a witch and lover to a powerful arms dealer seems like a perfect captive to human rebels who are trying to make it through.

The human rebels have capture Romulus, an arms dealer's lover, expecting the situation they are dealing with might change with the information they expect to get from him. Kieran, one of the rebels, wasn't expecting this prisoner to be the stepbrother he hasn't seen in a long time. An old flame start to burn again when Kieran is expected to take care of their prisoner, and now Kieran has to choose between his new family of humans or his rediscovered love for Romulus.

SPOILED was a great read. I missed this dystopian world and reading it reminded me how much I enjoyed The Fate of the Fallen/Status Quo series. It might be a part of that world but it would work fine as a standalone.

I liked the plot a lot. It is the kind of story I liked but I felt it was a little bit sweeter than I expected. That might only be an issue for me because I like darker stories. It's a little slow paced but I still enjoyed it. I didn't think things would go right for these two; everything seemed doomed that I had made peace with the fact that there probably wouldn't be a happy ending for them and yet I found the turn of events very satisfying.

One of the things I loved about it was the constant possibility of betrayal that made me doubt every single one of the characters, even Kieran and Romulus. I was always expecting one of them to betray the other. It got me in the edge all the time and I loved it.

I struggled a little about Kieran and Romulus as a couple; I don't think they had a great chemistry for most of the book but as I kept reading, things starts to make sense. It still felt a little bit like Stockholm syndrome than true love but I liked them together anyway. I was also intrigued by the secondary characters, among them all, one that got my attention was the Butcher, or more likely his relationship with Romulus. I hope I get to know more of that relationship in the future.

Overall SPOILED was a great book. It wasn't too much angsty and I think anyone who liked M/M pairing would enjoy it.

This is a well written story about an attraction between step-brothers.
Add vampires and werewolves in the mix, and I'm in heaven.
This book had me hooked from the very first page.
Well done Ms Phoenix and Ms Noel.
