Just finished going through this with another group (with this being our 13th time!), and every time God reveals deeper things He needs to refine in me and greater things He has in store for our marriage! Cannot recommend this enough...find a re|engage group near you and take the plunge!
This has been such a helpful book that has given me a whole new set of gospel centered tools to my marriage. Done through a small group setting it has really been a healing experience.
This is an interesting read but needs work. Reads like a seminary student's C- first draft. My wife and I still very much enjoyed going thru it for a small group study, but it took quality leaders and couples discussing to truly appreciate the topics. The book itself reads a bit Calvinistic and lacks nuance and explanation on many topics. There are many great points throughout the book, but it leaves you wanting more. It reads more like an extended outline than a book. I understand it's meant to be used in small group studies, but even our group leaders who had done it numerous times acknowledged some groups just don't get a lot out of it.
While there was some useful information, there was also some very harmful information that could be used to manipulate and gaslight those experiencing domestic violence. (Specifically chapter 2 on Brokenness.) I’ve since a realized a marriage book written by 2 men who don’t seem to have the educational background to write about marriage isn’t probably the best to be taking marriage advice from. Definitely comes from a conservative Christian lens that I don’t follow anymore, but I read this in a marriage workshop at my previous church while I still ascribed to it. Even then, the more I read, the more my experience in social work with struggling families tripped my “spidey senses.”
Re/Engage is definitely worth taking the class and reading the book for help with your marriage. Our class took 2 chapters each week and had discussion after reading the chapters and doing the homework. It was one of the best things we could have done for our marriage. Deep questions, and be prepared to work through some issues. Highly recommended.
