Do you enjoy a colorful bit of history with your romance? Northern Scotland was under heavy Viking influence for hundreds of years, and the people of the Shetland Islands retain their Norse heritage to this day. With her wolfhound at her side, Katja will travel from Scotland to the Shetland Islands to escape a failing marriage, distrust, and three attempts on her life, leaving behind her husband and his spurned mistress, and a clan that does not want her. Encountering miscreants and pick-pockets along the way, this hardy heroine is determined to live life her way. What will she do when she is offered a second chance at love?
Amazon best-selling author Cathy MacRae enjoys weaving tales of romance in the Highland mists. Her stories feature strong heroes and feisty heroines in pursuit of their happy-ever-afters in medieval Scotland.
When not writing, Cathy can be found curled up in a chair with a book or enjoying the outdoors with a German Shepherd or two. She is currently working on another Highland romance novel and planning her next trip to Scotland.
'THE HIGHLANDER'S VIKING BRIDE' by Cathy MacRae is book Two in the "Hardy Heroines" series. This is the story of Calder MacGerry and Katja Sinclairs. I have not yet read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book. MacGerry and Sinclairs have been at war for awhile and now that Calder father has past, he is looking into ending this war. Katja doesn't trust to many people after the treatment she gets from her father and his people. Although her brothers try to protect her it still is a big issue. So when she is ordered to marry the enemy Calder she thinks maybe this is the chance she need to get away from her father. But peace doesn't last with the MacGerry as someone start to try to kill her. Will this fragile bond between Calder and Katja that had started to slowly grow be broken? I found this to be a really great story and so enjoyed read it. It makes me want to find more books by Ms. MacRae. "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read." http://sissymaereads.blogspot.com/
The story starts with the hero losing his father and becoming laird. It's an emotional start, that, unfortunately for me, gave me high expectations for the book.
The story is built around the marriage of convenience trope, which I love, and the BIG misunderstanding one, which I don't. Katja, the heroine, is forced to marry Calder to stop the feuding between their clans. Katja has "the sight", she can read auras, and she uses it to discern the true feeling of those around her. Unfortunately, she always jumps to conclusions and can't communicate to save her life.
Calder is new to the laird-ing business, so he strives to do everything himself and can't delegate. This leads to him being absent for days from his home and to Katja to do what she does best: jump to conclusions. Also, he can't talk to his wife either. As you can all imagine, this leads to the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING! Katja goes to greet her husband home, but stops to listen at doors(because this always leads to hearing great stuff/ends sarcasm) and hears a discussion that obviously is out of context. But instead of barging in and TALKING to he husband she decides to jump ship and leave. I can't say more without spoiling the whole book, but everything could have been avoided if they could have taken 5 minutes to talk...
Besides the big misunderstanding trope, the other thing that I disliked was how her dad was made into the villain, giving me the expectation of him doing villain-y stuff in the book, and then forgetting everything about it. I need resolutions to conflicts, don't introduce one if you don't want to actually flash it out.
All in all, the premise was good, but then the author seemed to change her mind mid-story and changed it... The research seemed sound, the characters a bit 2 dimensional, the scenery descriptions and settings were great, I only wish my expectations at the start of the book were met.
The hardest part of writing a review is saying enough to entice you to read it without spoiling the story. This is a very good book with complex characters and a wonderful wolfhound, Freki.
Calder MacGerry never expected to be laird of his impoverished clan. His father is killed raiding sheep from the Sinclair’s land as they desperately need food. Calder has a younger brother, sister and clan to take care of and seeks a truce with Laird Sinclair. Laird Sinclair agrees to a truce if Calder marries his daughter, Katja. Katja is not well treated by her father and thinks to refuse until she sees Calder. Katja comes with a large “tocher” including land, supplies and gold from her grandfather. Calder does not want an unwilling bride, but her brother convinces him she will be safer with him as her father does not respect her. Her father insists she will be “wedded and bedded” and gone by nightfall.
Calder is pleased with his bride, but pays little attention to her as he’s busy preparing his clan for winter as they now have food and supplies thanks to her. Some members of his clan are not happy he married an enemy and want to harm her. She overhears something that makes her leave and head for her aunt and uncle’s home on one of the northern isles. A dangerous journey, even with Freki for protection.
And that’s all I’ll write as I do not like to spoil a wonderful story. My favorite, and true, lines in the story: “Remember, men are daft creatures and often do stupid things. ‘Tis in their nature. Dinnae be too hard on the lad when he comes beggin’ for forgiveness.” I highly recommend this book. Thank you Cathy MacRae for giving me this wonderful book to read.
To end the fued between the macgerry and sinclairs, laird sinclair offers his daughter katja as a bride to calder, the laird of macgerry. poor katja finds her new clan don't like her very much because she's a sinclair and when things start to get nasty she goes to her viking family for help. calder goes after her, but can he salvage his marriage and can they learn to trust each other.
I love Cathy MacRae's books, you are always guaranteed and adventure and this is no less than I expected, it will have you hooked from the start and you won't want to put it down till you are done.
I received an advanced reader copy and I voluntarily leave my honest opinion

REVIEW: 3.75 stars-- THE HIGHLANDER’S VIKING BRIDE is the second installment in Cathy MacRae historical, slightly paranormal HARDY HEROINES romance series. This is Laird Calder MacGerry, and Katja Sinclair’s story line. THE HIGHLANDER’S VIKING BRIDE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Calder and Katja) THE HIGHLANDER’S VIKING BRIDE follows Laird Calder MacGerry as he must make peace and end the feud with Clan Sinclair upon the death of his father. Without food or supplies for the upcoming winter, the new Laird is desperate for find provisions for his suffering clan. When Earl Sinclair offers a truce, the truce comes with a caveat-a proviso of sorts-Calder MacGerry must marry the Earl’s only daughter, and in doing so would be granted the woman’s dowry and everything that comes with. Enter Katja Sinclair, the mysterious and only daughter of Earl Sinclair, and the woman with whom Calder will fall in love. What ensues is the tepid but growing relationship between Calder and Katja, and the struggle for Katja to trust the man who has all but destroyed her heart and her soul.
THE HIGHLANDER’S VIKING BRIDE is a story of romance, betrayal, revenge and mistrust. Calder never thought about taking a bride but with his clan in total disrepair, Earl Sinclair’s offer is something he could not refuse. Katja is an independent young woman who has struggled all of her life to find a place in her father’s heart only to be rejected time and again. Her marriage to Laird Calder MacGerry comes with a promise of love but a love that will be threatened by sins of the past. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
THE HIGHLANDER’S VIKING BRIDE, like many of Cathy MacRae’s previous Highlander tales finds our couple apart for a good portion of the building story line. Katja believes she is better off, away from the Laird and his clan, and finds herself on the run, searching for family she hasn’t seen in years. Meanwhile Calder MacGerry must go in search of his wayward bride. More time together would have increased my enjoyment of the overall story. The premise is entertaining and passionate; the characters are colorful, strong willed, and charismatic; the romance struggles in the face of mistrust and threats against the heroine’s life. THE HIGHLANDER’S VIKING BRIDE is a dramatic and energetic story where a young woman finds happiness against the odds.

From the Author
Meet Katja Sinclair, a young woman who is forced to make some difficult decisions. After years of living beneath her father's harsh rule, marriage to a neighboring laird seems a path to freedom and possibly happiness. But things soon go very wrong, and when she is obliged to fight her way out of a life-threatening situation, escape to her Viking family via a dangerous route to the Shetland Islands may be her only option.
My Thoughts:
This isn't my first time reading a Cathy MacRae book but it is the first one I have read that was coauthored by DD MacRae.
Although this book is part of a series it does read well as a standalone story. There are no carry over characters and the story is written and developed as if it was intended to be a standalone title.
The characters are very well drawn out and the storyline is well written and engaging.
There was only one question that I felt was never completely answered. Why does Katja's father feel such animosity toward her? She seems to try to gain his respect but nothing she does is deemed right by her sire.
Calder has become clan laired after the deaths of his father and elder brother. Although this situation would never have been his choice he is determined to do anything necessary to bring peace between the MacGerry and Sinclair clans. Even marry the Sinclair's daughter.
Can these two enemies bring peace to the clans or will their mistrust of each other break them apart?
I gave this well written book 4.75 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5 flames. There are very heated encounters between our hero and heroine even though they find it difficult to trust each other.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book provided by Author's Pal to read for a Blog Tour. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I have read and reviewed voluntarily.
The Highlander's Viking Bride: Book 2 in the Hardy Heroines series by Cathy MacRae is an awesome Medieval Romance. I was positively entranced and entralled! Can be read as a stand alone.
Calder MacGerry, is the laird of an impoverished clan, but he has decided, after his beloved fathet's recent death, he would end the bitter feud between the MacGerrys and Sinclair clans. He accepts Laird Sinclair’s offer of marriage to his only daughter, Katja, to seal the agreement between their clans. Peace between the two clans is finally on the horizon.
Katja however, is not so sure. She trusts no man, and not many lasse. She been raised around a clan that treats her no respect. She has brothers, of course, who tries to protect her ftom her father's harsh treatment. She is the best archer in her clans, though.
What starts out as a marriage of hope, soon turns to mistrust and someone in clan MacGerry is trying to run Katja away. She is accepted by her husband's family with open arms and some others in the clan, however, acidents soon start happening to her. She is poisoned, nearly raped, and set upon by thuds, it's a good thing she is a fiece lass who can protect herself. Calder is furious when he learns of the things that's been happening to his new wife. Can love grow from mistrust and hapastance?
"The Highlander's Viking Bride" is filled with intrigue, mistrust, danger, romance, betrayal and love. It seems when things happen to Katja her husband is not around he's often trying to increase his clan's strength, so he's absent often, he leaves his bride with his brother for her protection.
This story has everything a romance reader could possibly wish to find in a great read. From complex and engaging characters to intriguing plots to a dangerous trek to the Shetlands to finding a true and absolute love and another family she hasn't seen for many years, her mother's Viking family. There is a wonderful cast of characters, I can't wait to read more about their lives. With mistrust, loneliness, much excitement, forgiveness, love and so much more, readers will be thrilled and excited to read Katja and Calder's story. I fell in love with them from the very beginning. Fast paced, a definite page turner, with so much to offer readers. Cathy MacRae does not disappoint readers. I hope you will see what I'm talking about and pick up you're copy. A definite must read! An extraordinary Medieval Romance!! I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Let me start me start by saying how much I enjoyed this story. I really can't remember the last time I read a medieval/scottish/viking historical that managed to transport me to another time and keep me rooted in that time frame without modern(ism) jarring me out of the period. In terms of storytelling, I can find no fault with this one. The settings, descriptions and even the accents were exactly as I would imagine.
Calder acquires the title of laird of the MacGerry clan after his older brother and then father dies, fighting their enemy the Sinclair clan. As new laird his first responsibility is to ensure his poor clan members do not starve during the upcoming winter so he decides to ending the quarrel with the Sinclairs and call a truce. On meeting the Sinclair earl, he soon discovers the man will make no deal unless Calder agrees to marry his daughter Katja. Calder really has no choice but to agree especially since he finds Katja attractive.
The start of their marriage doesn't bode well since Katja is coerced into it. She's not happy with the way she has been treated by her mean father. And she worries her new husband might be the same.
Calder has his work cut out, especially with the mistakes and trying to appease his distrustful wife. Throw in the fact that other members of his clan are not happy that he married a Sinclair and has made her their new mistress and you can imagine the looming disaster.
Something bothered me and it's to do with the characterisation of Katja.
I understood Katja to a point. She had to live with a cruel father. But she is strong and brave, and we are reminded often that she has warrior viking blood in her. But sometimes, she had the emotional maturity of a four year old. And this really got on my nerves. She was quick to jump to conclusions where Calder was concerned and usually the wrong ones. I kept thinking 'have some faith, woman.' You'd think she never had any positive men in her life. But she had brothers who obviously cared about her.
Sigh. Don't get me wrong. Even with Katja annoying me, I still enjoyed this story. I guess, it shows how invested I was in this brilliant story and I just wanted everything to be perfect.
This is my first time of reading this author and you can be sure she has a new fan. I can't recommend this enough. If you enjoy Highland historicals then you can't miss this one. Grab your copy today.

I was given an early review copy, which I voluntarily agreed to review this spectacular book. All words, thoughts and ideas are my own.
I had a good time and I think I will reread it someday.

Amazing read by Cathy and DD MacRae, a feud between the MacGerry clan and clan Sinclair has been going on for for some years and neither clan remembers the sole reason for the feud .Calder MacGerry seeks a truce with the Sinclair clan to have a better life for his people and to save his people from dying but Calder gets more than he bargains for , a bride in the process ,he is as surprised as his bride to be Katja . Katja's life is not a pleasant as her father is mean spirited and has no love for his daughter , Katja is special and her father only wants her special gift not his daughter ,she is also of viking decent .Can two enemies find love and live peacefully even though someone in Calder's clan wants her dead , lots of twists and turns ,we also meet a very lovable and protective wolfhound maned Freki , many thanks to DD for her expertise in making Katja skills as a hunter and warrior ,she gives us fabulous and strong heriones , fabulous writing by Cathy ,so love this lady's book , thanks so much for an awesome read and thanks for the excerpt for the next book , sounds amazing
The Highlander’s Viking Bride by Cathy & DD MacRae 4.5 Stars! I loved this story! Born to a evil and brutal sire Katja finds her father has shamed and embarrassed her one last time by agreeing to the suit of peace, if the new MacGerry’s Laird (Calder) will agree to marry his Sinclair daughter and leave with her by sunset so he never has to see her again! Katja finds no peace in her new clan and feels she needs to be somewhere else, where she will be safe! This fast pace storyline is well defined with lots of adventure, danger, great characters, witty and humorous dialogue, and a heroine with badass fighting skills! One disappointment was Calder never told her he’d seen her years earlier and had thought of her ever since. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great highland story.
I've read this book twice now and been charmed both times. Katja has excellent brothers--who would kill Calder if he mistreated their sister. In fact, nearly everyone he meets after their abrupt wedding feels much the same. Including his family...or certainly his sister and grandmother. And a young boy whom Katja befriends and assigns himself the task of her knight in shining armor. But Calder is a really well-meaning fellow. Isn't he? And he's fallen in love with Katja almost overnight. No spoilers here. Just know that you're in for another action-packed read by Cathy MacRae and DD MacRae.
Great read. When a writer can bring passion to the pages of a romance story without going full porn for half of a book, that is a true romance writer. MacRae & MacRae bring true historical facts and weave stories you won't want to put down. The new Laird Calder thinks everything is alright since him and his new bride Katja have a vera fine time of it in the bed, that'll be all he has to do to have a happy wife & life. Katja gets fed up, especially after 3 attempts on her life, and leaves. I want a trip to the Shetland Islands after this read! ✈
Trope: Historical Romance, arranged marriage, heroine had rough homelife with father. Was taught self defense (knives mainly), has a loyal doggo.
Slow burn level: 20%
Why a 3? Strong female character, who can use a knife to defend herself. Love the relationship with the dog. The hero was not a tool, tried to improve self. While you did have a little bit of the old mistress influence, it was not heavy to the plot
The characters and story are intriguing and engaging. A small clan has been engaged in a feud with powerful Sinclair Clan for so many years that the reason for the feud is forgotten and the smaller clan is depleted of man power and resources. The clan Laird seeks a truce with th Sinclair Clan and is offered more than he bargained for - a wife and her rich dowery.
I loved this book I just had to read it straight after the first book as I needed to know the characters and storyline. I read it in one day and have already downloaded the next 3 books in the series. great read. Recommend to all this is new author to me but I am enjoying her work.
The first one was so much better, to the point I forgot that this was the same author. This was just so-so for me. Not great, not horrible. I finished it, and it did make me smile at the end.
I came across this book and decided to read it since I had read the first quite a while ago. I enjoyed this just as much. Can be read alone. Thankful this was available with Kindle Unlimited.
I really liked this book. If your into strong female characters, who can fight as well as the men in the books you'll love it. No damsel in this book. And the male hero in this book didn't try to change her , just loved her for who she was.
What is the trouble with Katja's sire? Will Karma become a true mistress of her new family? Will Elke grow as fast as her guardian? Will Katja's new clan grow and prosper?
Good book. Got better as it went along. Ended up enjoying it. The heroine I thought was stupid and jumped to stupid conclusions but her stupidity created a good story. Plenty of action. All in all it was a very good book
If u love strong fighting women, this is the book for you. I love Cathy's books. she's a great writer. keeps your interests. This book is worth the cost.
Arranged marriage. Ex drama. Misunderstandings. The Hero has a Leman but promises to be faithful to his wife. No intimate scenes with anyone other than the Hero and heroine. No cheating. HEA.
What a fantastic book! This really was an awesome read! If you like Scottish Highlander books, you will love this one! This has a beautiful love story and a twisting plot! I loved this book!
