Thanks to Ray and his allies, the chaos in the city of duels is gradually abating. However, Giga Professor Franklin is far too obsessed with victory to let it end so easily... “Plan C!” he cries, as he plays yet another ace up his sleeve. Book 5 in the series concluded the first arc in the Infinite Dendrogram series. We still follow our main gang in the conclusion to Franklin’s Game. We also get a little bit of a scene into Reiji Mukudori’s real life.
I loved the conclusion to the arc, I thought it was wrapped up really nicely, but in such a way that I’m sure we will see the some side characters again in a future volume.
I cannot wait until we get a season 2 to the anime, as the second arc will be the main focus, but I can safely say that I’m enjoying the light novels so much more. Infinite Dendrogram volume 5 earns another 5 stars.

Finally, the finishing of this arch, which has been chopped up roughly between a number of books. I like this series a lot, said chopping aside, and was happy to read the end of this arch. I have gotten a bit tired of this storyline, and had reached a point where I just wanted it to end. Especially with Franklin and every single fallback plan he had. It got repetitive, and after the first and second fall back plans, you kind of just want the story to wrap up, not be dragged into ANOTHER novel.

And then the extra bits at the end, like the fact that kinda ruins everything and makes them less mysterious... and because of course she does. it makes perfect sense this would be the case. Gotta add some kind of tension to everything, both inside and outside of the game.

In the end, this was an average book for me, which is a shame. I did enjoy parts of it, and will continue to read the series, but this just dragged on far too long in my opinion. It was nice to see Ray's brother cut loose, and explore his character a bit, but other than that, it was just too long. But still, if you are this far into the series, you are clearly enjoying it, and like me, will probably continue to read it.

Unlike the previous volumes, I read 4 & 5 back to back and the only reason for this is once again a cliffhanger ending.

───────────────────

The previous volume sort of focused on some characters in bigger details, this one did as well, BUT if was mostly the conclusion of the battle and in turn Franklin’s Game. If we go revelation wise, or the cleverness of Sakon Kaidou’s writing then he doesn’t actually get the bigger chances to do that here. Not because of an ability issue, it’s more of the timing and the actual happenings. Battle wise, I don’t believe that when it comes to Ray we’re seeing different things, however, I will applaud the author’s incentive to give me a different kind of battle when it comes to him.

I think the thing I enjoyed the most here was seeing how the plans were foiled, who was an active member in all of them, having my suspicions confirmed about both Franklin and Hugo and of course seeing what else our mad scientist has in store. I did hope for more superiors to join the fight and make their appearance worth while if you will but I think that because of what actually happened so far, I believe that this could be enough to include as many as possible.

The real event here though is the King of Destruction and what was confirmed for everyone who paid 10% attention while reading the previous volumes. I haven’t seen an entrance this badass in a while so consider me extremely happy to be hyped for it. And best part? He didn’t disappoint whatsoever!

Although I don’t think it’s a bad volume with what was presented and how it concluded, I still don’t see that much of a point for the battle or rather the arc to have continued into volume 5 and have that full volume be for one instance. Yes, it’s a big instance, but my feelings remain unchanged. This makes me think about the anime, ending it anywhere before this volume will leave a very bad taste in anyone’s mouth if there is no sequel after it. Ending it here gives it a pseudo conclusion, and in turn makes you excited for what else to come based on the revealed new characters and what was hinted about the game itself so hopefully it will be fun.

Final rating: 3/5

This is the final chapter of the Franklin arc. It's still a pretty battle oriented saga, though the focus is much more on our heroes' abilities than the enemy, which is mostly Franklin's nameless beasts.

Nothing too revelatory here, besides learning Franklin's real life identity and learning a tiny bit more about Ray's family (well, mostly Shu / Bro-Bear). Like most novels in the series, some setup gets thrown at you towards the end, like concerning the Behemoth master and some Superior magic user.

Ray's tactics remain tried and true, though the presentation of these tactics is a bit fun since Ray is down an arm from the last volume. Rook doesn't get too much involvement this chapter, and Marie is also just a supporter here.

I haven't yet read the bonus stories, but apparently they focus on reality, and I heard some chatter about a female character in one that makes me interested. Those could be fun.

4½ stars rounded down. Why? Because the story ended but there was another 60 pages to the book. Mind you they weren't awful pages, but certainly anti-climactic. Book 5 finishes off this story arc and has a somewhat large and epic conclusion to it. We get to see more of Shu and some of the others step up for a bit. All in all a fairly welcome conclusion.

The remainder of the book a couple of shorts that, again, while they can be kind of fun and interesting to see what these characters go through when they're not saving the world, aren't exactly a solid fit right after they have saved the world.

Verdict: Infinite Dendrogram remains one of the better series I've been reading and if it didn't always come down to money, money, money I'd have more of them.

A satisfying closing arc! Every question answered every mysteries revealed! Following the story up to this volume is perfectly justifiable because of this volume alone.

The book is the continuation of the previous volume where it is stopping at a cliffhanger ( why they do this anyway... ) and put a satisfying end to it. Not to mention that the author tells the aftermath of the event and how it is affecting the daily lives of both tians and masters. Oh, and the big reveal at the end - lol - that is unexpected.

the side story, as always, helps spiced up the story by including the daily life of Ray, both in-game or in-real-life and served as a breather for our main character here.

A great ending to what can be considered the first arc of this series.

It is better than the books before. It also tries to have a conclusion for all the characters that took part in the battle in the first half of the book.

The anime is rather awesome so it’s only natural I start the light novels

Although all the issues in the book, left something to be desired... like a second editor.

For a book that's basically all climax, it's a damn good climax. It makes the denouncement epilogues and short stories feel like a well-deserved break.

Infinite Dendogram would have been the coolest thing I've ever read back when I was 14, I'm now considerably older but have to admit that it's still pretty damm cool! The fifth volume marks the end of the first arc, so we have a big awesome final battle. However the arc end somewhat awkwardly around the halfway point, the rest of the book is then made up of two fairly mediocre short stories. This is really a shame since the first half is great.
