He and his Space Team are broke. Forced to take low-paying gun-for-hire jobs just to keep the food replicator working, their prospects are not looking good.
When they pick up a distress signal from a luxury space cruiser, they think their luck might be about to change. And it does. Sadly, not in the way they'd hoped.
Someone has detonated a Time Bomb aboard the cruiser - an experimental device designed to shatter time itself. As the team passes through the fragments, their personal timelines begin moving at very different speeds, and an ageing Cal is forced to live out decades aboard the ship surrounded by his now statue-like crew mates and the mutated, inbred descendants of the cruiser's former inhabitants.
As if that isn't bad enough, the Time Bomb was just a test for the real weapon - a weapon that could spell a fate worse than death for Space Team, and the enslavement of the entire galaxy.
Featuring giant space babies, reverse mermaids and the most dangerous man in existence, Space Team: The Time Titan of Tomorrow is the eighth fast and frantic adventure in the Space Team comedic scifi series.
Barry J. Hutchison is an award-winning author, screenwriter and writer of comics. Having written over 70 books for children and teenagers, Barry is now writing books for adults. Space Team is his first grown-up novel.
Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and irritatingly upbeat dog.
This has been the most emotional and heartbreaking book of the series I’ve read till now! It has the all the twists and turns, the humour and fun, but what an unexpected adventure. Yes, I admit, I was crying by chapter 7 seeing Cal and Splurt so desperate and despondent. The end left me speechless, mind blown.
Another great entry in the Space Team saga. This one, though, takes a bit of a turn at the end. It's still hilarious stuff, but ramps up its serious side as well. Hold onto your hats.
Another fun adventure with the Space Team! Each new novel in this series feels like being reunited with old friends. Engaging. Exciting. Amusing. Looking forward to the next one.
I loved this series at first, but each successive book has gotten more ridiculous and more juvenile. You have to suspend any semblance of intelligence to read these later books in the series. Cal has gone from a favorite character to the most insipid and annoying idiot you can imagine. Kevin is so stupid he makes me want to throw my iPad against the wall in frustration. Barry, please bring back the quasi-intelligent plots you had earlier in the series. No one is as stupid as Cal and Kevin. Their life expectancy would be measured in minutes, rather than years. They’ve stopped being funny.
Phil Thron is great! The outtakes are goofy & pretty much Phil laughing himself silly because of Hutchison's word twisters. =P
- Cal becomes a bit more responsible. - Splurt is amazing. Wonder if we'll ever learn how old it is? - This is one of the few series where the mix of dick/ass and bathroom humor doesn't turn me off the story. It's actually funny sometimes! =P
This one was a little different and I liked it. Pulled on the heartstrings more than I expected, and the cliffhanger at the end? Rude. Now I have to jump straight into the next one. At this point, I’m obviously all in with these characters. Still loving the format - quick, ridiculous, and perfect as a breather between heavier reads. You really can’t take them too seriously, and that’s kind of the point.
Another great book in the Space Team series, though this one felt a bit bitty. I was all set to give it 3.5 stars but the ending was excellent: a potent mix of sadness and dark humour.
The Time Titan of Tomorrow by Barry J Hutchison is the eighth book of the Space Team series and yes, it is still fun. One thing you have to get over is the continual references the smirky main character keeps referring to and the repetitiveness coming into the work, but at least you'll laugh. At least Mech has a few good lines in this one.
Yes, Cal Carver and team keep romping through space and getting into trouble as fast as anyone, but the main story line does tie into the prior book, Planet of the Japes.
A quick run through this book shows an introductory story, and sub story, and then the main. This seems to be the theme Barry runs with in most of the books. It is as if the real story needs the support of the first mini one, but it really doesn't. I would suggest getting rid of the small introductory one for it does not add much.
We do see the introduction of a new character in this book, and the return of another one. The characters are here for a short period of time. The theme is a well known one and used by many science fiction writers. Barry does weave in his special effects as a humor writer with great dexterity.
All in all I enjoyed this episode, for it did make me smile at times. The suggestion though is to pick up a little more on the editing for the repetition of words does get a little trying at times. For fans of the series it is a good book to have on the shelf after reading all the pages.
Hope you are enjoying the series as I am. The work still falls short of five stars in my opinion.
Another cracking episode in this spacecrazy series.
Yet again we meet up with our old friends, who of course, are still in need of money to finance not only their space adventures but more importantly, to buy more 'mush' for the food replicator when it's stores become depleted thus depriving Cal of large slices of banoffee pie!!!!
Needless to say, more mayhem and madness ensues, with Cal and the ever adorable Splurt living for 50 years in a separate time stream (I found the conclusion to this part of the book very moving - am I the only space softy fan?). A time titan is then drawn in to help the team when they meet up with an old foe and........oh just read it yourself, the oneliners are worth it alone.
I'm a big fan of all the characters but especially Splurt ,for his adorableness and also Kevin the AI, whose 'I' is quite elusive at times but has a wickedly funny sense of humour.
I'm interspersing this series with another just to make it last longer as there are only four more books to go!
The eighth entry into the Space Team series is the best yet. It had all the hallmarks that a reader of the series would expect: action, humor, serious situations, and as always the great interactions among the team. This entry is a real roller coaster, going from humorous to sad and then doing it all over again. By the time I reached the end of the book I had a mix of emotions about what happened.
I would have liked to have given it 5 stars, but the book clearly needed another editing pass before it was released. There are instances where the wrong word is used or a word is missing from a sentence. For example, in chapter 11 Cal asks the Time Titan to "just stand there for the new couple of minutes" rather than "just stand there for the next couple of minutes". Each time these errors forced me stop reading in order to make sure I was reading it correctly, and served to break up the flow of the story.
I found the attempts at emotional manipulation rather cheapened it for me.
This is the weakest of the books so far, Time travel has a tendency to muddle up any plot as the solution to everything becomes "well why not fast-forward or rewind time?"
Here the author can only answer with one word. "Plot! I need an actual plot with characters doing stuff to keep things going!"
Which is never satisfying or convincing. It's not better if the characters act as mouth pieces for these concerns either as it just highlights them rather then them actually doing something.
Overall a meh installment that is too filler heavy and predictable. I wonder if it's time for this team to finally retire.
Both the funniest and also my least favorite (from a story perspective) so far.
Parts of this book had my in tears I was laughing so hard. The comedy was turned up a notch, but only in places.
The rest of the story, the non-comedic parts, were less enjoyable than previous books. Not to say it was not good, just not good compared to the other books in the series. There were more depressing elements and ultimately the scope of the book was fairly limited.
I also do not care for the style of ending this book employed. Previous books have had much better endings.
However, all in all a good book and a very good chuckle.
*** minor spoilers *** I do not care for the "everything is a problem and we're in deep shiz" endings.
I love this series. As usual, Barry Hutchison brings the right blend of drama, action, memorable characters, and fantastically implausible scenarios together and injects his special sense of humour into it. If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, definitely read them in order, you won’t be disappointed. All of the books in the series are great, and this is no exception. There is a bit of a cliff hanger at the end of this book, but the author is so ridiculously prolific that the next book will be out in a few months, so you won’t have to wait too long for the resolution to the cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read what happens next!
How could answering a distress call lead to the worst day in the Space Teams brief history together?
Well, if you've read the previous books in the series, you probably already know that this group of unlikely, totally non-heroesque rejects have a Murphy's Law kinda day every day.
Barry Hutchison pulls out all the stops, laughs, action and emotion in this eighth novel of the series. We get to see sides to all of the Team that we've only glimpsed before. And I'm jumping right into book nine in the next 60 seconds.
I love the Space Team books!! I've found out they're not for everyone. But if you like Sci-Fi with a healthy dose of humor and a sometimes silliness, interesting characters, (both human and aliens) and a plot that keeps you reading, you can't go wrong with a Barry J. H. book. I won't write about the plot line, because most of the other reviewers do that. Suffice to say, it's classic BJH. His books always remind me of Seth McFarlane's "Orville". (2nd season coming... YAY!!)
Personally, I liked this book more than the last one. (Vagazzeling?) But then I know who Dorothy Zbornak is...God rest her soul.
Another great space team adventure. All the crew are back and as funny as usual. It starts out int the middle of a low paying job and gets worse from there in true Space Team fashion. Made me laugh and groan. Plus there was the oddness of time being crazy. Old villains pop up again and the ending was really good. Totally sets up what craziness will come next. Read it in one sitting it was so good and funny. I love this series. Always makes me laugh.
Barry your books are highly imaginative, and great reads. I have read all 8 books and anxiously waiting for more books of space to come. I was saddened to read about Miz at the of time titan, but have become familiar with all of the usual ones. I feel like they are part of own family, but I have to tell you that I have changed my little Morkey,s name to Splurt and like Mech would say he don't fonkin like it!!!. Keep up the GREAT work, and don't be a shizznod
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Cal is not having a good day, the galaxy is again on the verge of destruction, but more serious than that, the food replicator has run out of food and by food we mean pink mush!! Barry Hutchison again delivers a very enjoyable roller coaster ride for the Space Team, as they try in there own way to help and be the good guys!! Although, I like Cal and Splurt, we need more of the rest of the team; Mech Loren & Mix as they are important to the story.
Proof if t were needed that Barry Hutchison can be serious at times. But don't worry it soon all gets silly again with a jolt at the end. Hard to write a review whilst being spoiler free. However... This particular story rambles from one theme to another in an order that mostly makes sense with a body count that is both thousands, millions or none. I for one miss Tobey Maguire who does not nearly get enough screen time!
As a big big fan, who tries to keep the space team books flowing over a period of years just to hold back from reading the whole series... Then, shiznod, this seriously is unlike no other ! Obviously no spoilers but the emotional bond between these is purely at its pinnacle here ! Only to excel in future reads. I have been tossed around in this book and it has been as greater ride as Lorens piloting skills ! All I can say is wow this is the empire strikes back of space team !
This was a good foray for me back into the space team. I had read the earlier books a while ago then just got back into this series. It is just as much fun as I remembered. Lots of action, lots of snark from Cal, and Kevin is still awesome. I am glad to see there are more books and look forward to what if anything happens for Miz. I recommend this series.
Barry, what have you done, you've killed Miz, time altered the universe and given Cal a maniacal ending to another fonking great space story. Miz , really? Got a theory, because of time alteration, she's still alive on Greyx ...yeah? Barry gets a bigger team...including a new Miz ?..... Well done on the story and a great fonking ginormous space cliffhanger
“You could’ve just said, like, ‘We’ve got a million battleships,’” Miz pointed out. “That would’ve avoided any confusion. To be honest, I’d have found it way more impressive. Say you’ve got a million ships and I’m like, ‘No way, that’s so awesome.’ Say it’s a thousand thousand and I’m like, ‘Huh? How come this guy’s counting like such a total tool?’ You know what I mean?”
But seriously, the book is another great one in the series. Be prepared to laugh and to cry as you will be on a great roller-coaster as you read the book.
Love all of the characters and you get to see some old friends from books past.
If you've loved the series as I have this is a must read.
They just keeping getting better! Or is that worse? Admittedly from the looks of it they’ve totally fonked up the space time continuum but, ya know, who doesn’t sometimes? I say, if it’s good enough for Kirk and Picard, then it’s surely good enough for Cal Carver.
Or no more pies for you! I was getting ready to do your version of Patron and sign up for a monthly pie thing but if she’s gone forever I don’t know if that’s possible. For everyone who doesn’t understand this review, read the series and it will make sense. I might start an anti-pie campaign. (Not really!)
Not my usual headline of simply Loved it because I hated the ending. Hopefully what I hated will be fixed in the next one because I love this series and it will break my heart if its not fixed..Mr. Hutchison knows of what I speak. Anyway love love love this series that I am devouring book by book. As always..Splurt is my favorite.
