BULLY BOY BLUE is a dark psychological suspense novella by Amazon # 1 bestselling author, John Nicholl, and ex-police officer and child protection social worker. This fast-paced novella deals with an abusive marriage; the wife, Kathy controlled by her violent “Bully Boy” husband, Michael.

But what makes this even worse is that Bully Boy is a COP…a well-respected detective…an Inspector in his field.

Kathy is like silly putty in his hands…she has no control in her life. He controls all her movements, she has been separated from all her friends and family, everything is timed and must meet his level of satisfaction. “Bully Boy” tells everyone that his wife had suffered a mental breakdown after her miscarriage and is now suffering from postnatal depression…and is now taking it out on him! What a bastard!

“You’re mine, Kathy. You’re my property to do whatever the hell I like with.”

“YES, DEAR.”

And who do they believe…well naturally a COP!

When she learns that she is pregnant again, she realises that she must take back control in her life, for the sake of her unborn child. Her brutal husband had beat her before until she miscarried her first pregnancy. It wasn’t going to happen again…She has a plan.

Did she escape or not? You will just have to read this short story to find out her strategy.

I can't say any more for fear of spoiling the plot. John Nicholl’s extensive experience provides credibility to this piece of fiction. He has an important message to share with the reader, whether they want to hear it or not. Abuse is Abuse and never should be tolerated!

I wish to thank the author, John Nicholl, for providing me with an ARC of the book about Domestic Violence, and keeping it on the forefront.

Master of the full-length psychological thriller, John Nicholl presents the reader with a novella that offers the same bone chilling excitement as the story progresses. Kathy Conner lives the most horrible life possible. An abusive husband who bullies her unremittingly with no one who will believe her, either the family she has regularly called or the police who turn up at the door. Married to Police Inspector Michael Conners, Kathy is sure that she will never rid herself of this monster, especially when he offers such a calm demeanour to the outside world. At her breaking point, Kathy begins concocting a plan as her only way out, though it will take all the patience she can muster. Never knowing if each night Michael comes home will be her last on earth, one day Kathy takes a chance. A great story that reminds the reader of how addictive Nicholl can be, given the chance.

I remember when I first discovered Nicholl on a whim and could not put the book down. Promising I would keep an eye out for any of his future publications, Nicholl kept me on his own personal radar. Each book built on strengths from the last and now this novella first perfectly into the flow and ongoing positive development of his writing style. Though brief, the story builds on a few central characters and the emotional differences between them, namely Kathy and Michael. From there, it is the slowly evolving thought processes that Kathy exhibits that keeps the reader wanting to know how it will all come to a climax. The reader goes through all the ups and downs faced by an abused woman and the desire to flee, even when she finds herself under the thumb of the abuser. With Nicholl's past professional experience in this area, it is no surprise that he is able to write so seamlessly and presents the reader will a stellar story whose impact resonate powerfully.

Kudos, Mr. Nicholl for such a wonderful piece of work. I am truly blessed to be able to read and share your work with others and hope you have many more stories to come.

This is one short novella that certainly packs a punch, but be warned: this story contains graphic violence both mental and physical, so it might not be for everyone.

Meet Kathy, married 3 years now to Mike Connor, a respected cop. So respected that he has systematically been able to abuse his wife with no repercussions, starting on their wedding night. Five 911/999 calls have been made to their address...2 from Kathy herself. But everyone believes Mike when he says his wife is depressed, acting crazy, even suicidal after the recent loss of a baby. They even feel sorry for him and all he has to put up with.

But then things get interesting...

After a recent discovery, Kathy realizes she needs to do something soon or her life is over. But what? She can't count on the police for help, and even her own Mother doesn't believe her. Does she have what it takes to escape with her life intact?

I have to say I wasn't a fan of the first half of this story, but the last half made up for it. There were some details I found that didn't ring true but I do love a good revenge ending and this didn't disappoint. My only other issue stems from the last chapter...not sure what to make of it, but maybe that was the author's intent.

My thanks to the author for the ARC. My review reflects my own opinion which is completely unbiased.

Kathy Conner is a fearful woman. Mike Conner, her husband, is a cop. Kathy called the cops once – only once – to report that her husband had beaten her. He beat her again. Mike tells everyone that his wife is delusional, in the throes of depression, practically bat-sh** crazy. He’s a respected inspector. Of course, he’s the one they believe. To Kathy, he’s not a loving husband. He’s Bully Boy Blue.

John Nicholl, author of White Is the Coldest Colour and Portraits of the Dead, has written another brutal tale, this one a novella, chronicling an abusive marriage. Because this is a novella, the character details are sketchy. Who are these people? How did they meet? How did they fall in love? All we see is verbal and physical battering from Michael against Kathy and her cowering, sniveling, and futile attempts to please him. But Kathy is a smart woman, and she comes up with a plan. When she learns that she is pregnant again, she knows it is time to act.

Nicholl, as always, gets his point across in gut-wrenching fashion. Mercifully, this story is brief, as it is lacking in joy. That’s not to say that it’s not well written, because it is. Mr. Nicholl has an important message, one that he is passionate about sharing. Reading about abusive relationships is not for everyone, however.

Kathy’s solution showed careful preparation, patience, and courage. The strategy is clever, but it seemed to me that it had flaws. Did she truly succeed in the long run? That’s another story, I guess.

I wish to thank Mr. John Nicholl for trusting me to write an honest, unbiased review.

Bully Boy is Kathy's husband. He's in charge of every single thing in her life. He's managed to separate her from her friends, her family. The two times she's called for help only worsened when he beat her mercilessly. He's a cop. Everyone believes the cops, right?

And now she's pregnant ... again. He beat her until she miscarried with her first pregnancy. She's not going to let that happen again .. she has a plan.

This is an extremely intensive short story (less than 100 pages). There is violence... sexual, emotional, physical. Some of it will turn your stomach .... some of it will make you cry.

I wish to thank the author, John Nicholl, for sharing the digital copy of this very concentrated story about Domestic Violence.

The opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

PAPERBACK VERSION

I am now following John Nicholl on goodreads.

Although the actual story of Bully Boy Blue is only 55 pages it holds a lot of a brilliant dark psychological suspense, that you won't be able put down. Bully Boy Boy really is a thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat making you cower with fear.

Inspector Michael Conner beats his wife Kathy. He's a violent man. When Kathy finds out that she pregnant, she fears for her life and her unborn child. She wants to escape from him. But can she ever really escape her abusive violent husband ?
I highly recommend Bully Boy Blue to all thriller readers.

I didn't realise that John Nicholl was the author of some of the books that is on my to read list WHITE IS THE COLDEST COLOUR and WHEN EVIL CALLS YOUR NAME and PORTRAITS OF THE DEAD. At some point I will read these books.

A battered wife finally gets her revenge in this short story! Told from multiple POVs in third person, this was an entertaining read and the second half of this story was my favorite. There was limited depth and frequent use of the word "dear," but overall an okay read.

White is the Coldest Colour was one of my favourite books of 2015 and I have been keen to read every book written by John Nicholl since. I think his previous experience as a police officer and in child protection give his books a true feeling of authenticity when it comes to the “behind closed doors” horrors that he specialises in when it comes to his plots. And although Bully Boy Blue is a short novella of 60 pages and I read it during my coffee break, the author can certainly pack a punch in such a short space of time.

I really felt for 26 year old Kathy, married to abusive Michael. Unfortunately for her, Mike is an Inspector in the police force and everyone thinks Kathy is depressed and making up lies about her husband, even her own family-because everyone trusts a policeman….. don’t they? But Kathy has discovered she is pregnant and it’s the catalyst for her to plan her escape.

The authors experiences in his past professions have given his scenarios a voyeuristic feel and I just wanted to rush in there and whisk Kathy away from her controlling bully of a husband. But as the story unfolds, it becomes obvious that the worm is about to turn-never underestimate a woman’s maternal emotions, her primitive desire to protect her young from danger. And Kathy has devised the perfect plan.

This novella enfolded me into Kathy’s life totally and I actually had goosebumps whilst reading it. It was a darkly engrossing read from start to finish, perfect for your commute as the time will fly by whilst reading it, I don’t think I lifted my eyes from the pages once. A warning though that this may contain triggers for some people due to scenes of domestic abuse.

Many thanks to the author for my review copy which I have chosen to read and review.

We read about it all the time. Spousal abuse, the abuser fooling the world with their public façade. The abused being portrayed as unbalanced, sympathy going to the abuser. Until finally, either one of them goes too far and murders their spouse or the spouse finally reaches for that last filmy gauze of hope for happiness and freedom and frees themselves.

Kathy has had enough of the beatings, the mental abuse and the raging fury and she plans her own escape, one that her detective husband will not foil. Will Kathy succeed? Will she be caught or has she finally committed the perfect crime? The last thing she saw in the house that was her prison was blood, pints and pints of blood and then she was gone…

John Nicholl has created a dark and suspense-filled horror that will push every alarm bell that decent people possess. Filled with social and emotional triggers, BULLY BOY BLUE will have your gut clenching, your fists taut and your tempers flaring and a feeling of justice finally being served, no thanks to the “Good Ole Boys” club. High tension, few words, packing the punch of a heavy-weight champion. NOT recommended for the weak of heart or constitution.

I received an ARC edition from John Nicholl in exchange for my honest review.

I have read and loved all of this author's previous books and so was really looking forward to reading this. It did not disappoint. Dark, intense, fast paced and hard hitting, like all of his books, I could not put this down. Once I started, I had to finish it. This author makes us cringe and hurt and rage. He makes us think and question the way things are and how some people get away with what they do. Reading his books in an intense experience and his characters stay with you for a long time. Brilliant, as ever!

In Bully Boy Blue, John Nicholl created a very believable villain who was extremely vile.
Michael, a respected policeman, has successfully alienated and isolated his wife Kathy from family, friends, and the public by making her reliant on him financially and convincing everybody that she is mentally unstable and receiving psychological treatment. Ever since their wedding night 3 years ago, he's been physically, emotionally and sexually abusing her, but now Kathy is determined to find a way out.
This was a short listen - ideal for in-between when you don't want to start another long book - but it definitely packed an emotional punch. It's an intense story and the domestic abuse scenes are raw and unflinching.
Constantly addressing her husband as "dear" seemed odd for a woman in her mid-twenties and became a bit weird (especially listening to it. Not sure if I would have noticed it quite as much had I been reading it?)
Towards the end, there were a couple of things that were questionable.
Overall though, a very good short story raising awareness of domestic abuse situations.
Jake Urry narrated this poignant story with the quality I have by now become accustomed to: individual voices for all the characters, the female ones are portrayed in a credible way, and emphasis, intonation and pacing are excellent as always.
I received a copy of the audiobook for review purposes. Thank you!

Following three full-length thrillers, John Nicholl has now written 'Bully Boy Blue', his first standalone novella. It is a fast-paced, heart-racing read that I gobbled up in one sitting.

The main characters are Kathy Conner and her husband Michael. To the outside world Inspector Michael Conner is an excellent detective and above all an exemplary loving and patient husband to his mentally ill wife. Everyone wonders just how he copes with his wife's condition. However, within the confines of their house, the reality couldn't be more different.

With novellas you can't say much in reviews for fear of spoiling the plot. All I'll say is that I really enjoyed reading this one and ended up devouring the whole book in less than an hour. I found myself shouting at Kathy to get a grip and wishing I could punch the brute on his face. I rushed through the book to see how it will all end, but I could never have envisaged the ingenious plan Kathy comes up with in the end. Clever girl!

With thanks to the author for an ARC of the book which I voluntarily accepted to read and review. Recommended!

This was a short story but a good one.

The night of there wedding 3 years ago Kathy's husband started to abuse her and to make matters worse he was a cop, nobody believed her not even her parents the only one on her side was her sister.

Kathy found out she was pregnant and knew she had to get away from him so she came up with a plan which i must say took nerves.
Did her plan work and did her husband get what was coming to him and get found out for the bully he was??
Read it to find out.

Very quick and intense read. Heavy subject matter, may be disturbing especially for those that have been through domestic violence. It's very easy to read in one sitting, you'll have a hard time putting it down. My problem is that the husband seemed to be kind of a caricature of an abuser... he is always cruel and calculating to his wife. I think in real life abusers often have their moments where they're kind and apologetic. That's usually what keeps their partner around, the hope that things will change. That is probably too much to cover in a novella, though! I'm going to give this story a 3.5, bumped to a 4.

One might think Kathy's life can't get any worse. She's constantly bullied and abused by her cop husband, and not even her own mother believes her. Despite the police being called to their house several times, everyone just has sympathy for Mike. That poor, hardworking man. He serves his community and then has to deal with a crazy wife at home. Now Kathy is pregnant... again. She risks Mike killing yet another one of their children before birth while she carefully hides the pregnancy and comes up with a crazy plan to finally escape her husband's clutches. But will it work?

Bully Boy Blue is a stand alone novella. Having read the authors other books, I was expecting a dark and disturbing read and I wasn’t disappointed.

For a novella the fear that Kathy feels and the abuse she has to endure from her husband really comes across in the story. The fact that her husband works for the police force is even worse as who is going to believe her over her husband? I have to admit I was slightly confused to the age of Kathy. She kept calling her husband dear, which personally the only people I tend to find that use that word is the older generation. I have to admit that I would have liked to have seen a bit less of it when Kathy was speaking to her husband.

Michael Connor, Kathy’s husband is a really nasty piece of work and someone readers will loath instantly. The fact his colleagues can’t see through him made feel as frustrated as Kathy.

It’s hard to say to much about the story with it only being a novella and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else who hasn’t had the pleasure of reading it yet. What I will say though is that Bully Boy Blue is a gripping read that can easily be devoured in one sitting. To be honest once you’ve picked it up you will struggle to put it down even if you wanted to! It may be a slightly uncomfortable read due to the abuse story line but it’s certainly a cracker a read.

My thanks to the author for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

A short novella that packs a punch. Kathy has been married to a respectable cop for three years. Unfortunately, she lost a baby and is now suffering through postnatal depression. At least that's what Mike, her upstanding husband, tells the world. The reality is very different. Mike is making Kathy's life a hell of physical and emotional abuse. It's so frustrating how many, many people have the opportunity to help and they all believe Mike's lies or simply choose not to intervene just to save themselves the trouble. Now Kathy is pregnant again and she finally finds the courage to fight back. What happens then is astonishing and pulse-raising. It's a very short and easy read, but the characters are deep and well-developed. I kept yelling at the book, the plot making me gasp more than once. I'm not surprised that John Nicholl has written another wonderful story, since his full-length novels are so good.

This is another great story by this author. I've read previous books by this author and loved them. His way with words capture me from start to finish. Although this is a novella we do get a well written full story.

Bully Boy Blue is a well respected Inspector in the force. He's a bully at home to his wife Kathy. Physical and mental abuse is a daily occurrence for her. When she finds out she's pregnant she knows she needs to escape. Can she?

Another great story by this author. I applaud him on writing about domestic violence. It's a subject that needs to be written about. Looking forward to reading more from him.

BULLY BOY BLUE is a dark psychological suspense novella by John Nicholl, and when I say dark it’s really, really dark! It may only be a short story but the author certainly packs a powerful and disturbing tale into these pages. It’s dark, intense and hard hitting, in fact some readers may prefer to give Bully Boy Blue a miss as it deals with domestic abuse, and the author doesn’t hold back on the details.

The plot centres around Kathy whose life is dominated by her abusive husband Michael a pillar of society, unfortunately for Kathy whose going to believe her story? Can she escape the evil clutches of a monster? I’m certainly not going to give anything away here. Oh my Michael really is a nasty piece of work, as you learn more about his abusive behaviour towards Kathy I found my stomach turning, and all my sympathies lay with her. All I could hope for in this sorry tale was Michael would get what he deserved.

John Nicholl never fails to amaze me as his villains are always so well portrayed, so much so you can’t help but detest them for the terrible things they do and Michael is no exception. The author takes the worse parts of human behaviour and creates characters that you wouldn’t wish to meet in your worse nightmares. Bully Boy Blue makes for a grim, brutal and very disconcerting read, but it’s well plotted with a very satisfying conclusion.

The problem with Novellas is that they are too bloody short! Just as you get to know the characters the story finishes grrrrr! A quick and satisfying read but I personally would have loved to read more!

Wow this short novella really had my gut wrenching from beginning with kath being scared of her husbands torture mental and physical. By the end of the story it was a nice ending showing how brave and courageous she was to do what she did to survive the abuse, what she did to get out of it well I was shocked but at the same time what else could she have done to protect her and her unborn child.

A clever domestic noir that captures the fear of living with a sadistic bully really well. Novellas aren't my typical read but this was, as always from this author, well written, uncomfortable and gripping, he has a knack of really reeling you into the situation and I confess to having palpitations for Kathy when she was planning and executing her plan.

I will always enjoy full length novels to short reads but this is a little belter!

This is my first book by this author but it definitely won't be my last. Wow, is pretty much all I want to say. This is the story of Kathy. She married the love of her life but since they exchanged vows, he has become her worst nightmare. Michael, a respected police man, has physically, emotionally and sexually abused Kathy for the last 3 years. When she fell pregnant the first time, he beat her till she lost the baby. So when she finds out she is pregnant again, she knows she has to leave, but doesn't know how!

I have to say that even though this is a short read, it packed quite a punch!! I normally don't particularly like short reads because they feel like something's missing. Not so here! The story was well written and developed and it felt like a much longer book. Nothing was left unanswered. While the plot is hard to read, it is something that happens everyday.

My heart broke for Kathy. She has to put up with so much and has no-one to turn to. Since her husband is a cop, she can't even rely on them. Plus if her husband found out she talked to someone, she would be in so much trouble. Kathy felt so real and all I wanted to do was hug her and take her away from it all!!

In all, this was an emotional rollercoaster. It is a quick read but one that will stay with you long after you take out the headphones. I will definitely be checking out more from this author!

Jake Urry is one of the best. He never fails to deliver anything other than a stunning performance. His range of tones and voices is incredible, plus his ability to perform the story in such a way as to make you a part of it, was amazing! He is truly an incredible narrator.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

John Nicholl gets inside the head of a woman brilliantly, and there were times when I wished he hadn't! Combine that with the terrible truth that we see what we expect to see...

This is a truly chilling thriller, and if it is a taster for his full-length novels I shall read them on a sunny beach, not by the light of my Kindle alone in the pitch dark.

OHMIDAYS!! I should take up underwater swimming, (or is that called 'drowning'?), because this book made me hold my breath from the first word until the last. The story plunges you in immediately and before you realise it you are praying for Kathy with every fibre of your being. As for her husband, the curses I heaped on his head would have made a sailor blush. This roller coaster ride takes you from the heights of hope to the depths of despair bypassing fear, hatred, love and disgust, (to name but a few). If you haven't pre-ordered this for the ridiculously low price of 99p, then you are really missing out. Another 5 star (plus) hit from Mr Nicholl. How does he keep doing it?

I don't usually read short stories but made an exception for this one and bully boy am I glad that I did. It's a very short story, no more than an hour's worth of reading, but it packs a HUGE punch, if you will excuse the pun.

Kathy is an abused wife but nobody believes her and she can't inform the police as her husband is a police inspector. Everyone loves Mike Connor, he has a lot to put up with as his wife, Kathy, is struggling with her mental health after her miscarriage. Little do people know that he brought on the miscarriage. When Kathy finds out that she is pregnant again she will do ANYTHING to protect her unborn child. So watch out Mike, Kathy's coming to get you!

Wow! What an amazing novella. I defy anyone to tear their eyes away from the page whilst reading this. Kathy's plight is one that is sadly experienced by many women (and men) and John Nicholl has really raised awareness of domestic violence by showing us that appearances can be VERY deceptive. Of course, I was ultimately rooting for Kathy and showing her to be a strong character in the end, gives hope and a voice to so many women suffering the same fate.

Don't be put off by this being a novella, it's short but certainly not sweet, and will leave you with your eyes wide open and a compulsion to look at the signs, however subtle, being given by the people around you. Bully Boy Blue is such a brave and impressive book - don't miss it!

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
