FINE PHOTO-GALLERY OF LA SWANSON. Originally published in 1970, this is basically a film and portrait gallery of Ms Swanson. Apart from a brief introduction, the photos tell the story and there are more than 300 of them, all in black and white covering her career. The first 90 pages are devoted to portraits from the silent days through to the mid-60s with emphasis on "her fabulous face." A brief section is devoted to "behind the scenes" and includes some family photos. The rest, some 165 pages, is a listing of all films plus television appearances, extensively illustrated with stills. The index of films, by noted screenwriter and film historian De Witt Bodeen lists everything from "The Fable of Elvira & Farina & The Meal Ticket" (1915) through to "Nero's Mistress" (1962) with most getting a cast list and brief synopsis. This is far from a glamorous publication as these A.S. Barnes (and budget line Castle Books) editions of the 60s and 70s were no great works of art and devoid of much style but they were excellent reference works which helped fill the void of the limited number of film books available at the time. When you delve into this book, you will be surprised how much interesting material there is and the volume of photos is a feast for admirers of Swanson.
