“Who am I?” “Where do I fit in?” “How can I get off the treadmill of trying so hard to achieve success and win approval so I can feel good about myself?” All of us are looking for security and significance, but most of us are searching in the wrong places. In this book, Dr. Ken Nichols opens the doors to a new way to live. We can find the stability, confidence, joy, and meaning we’ve always longed for . . . in our new identity as God’s beloved children. With clear principles and gripping stories, he challenges our current thinking, melts our hearts by pointing us to the grace of God, and inspires us to reflect the glory of God to everyone who’s watching. Grasping our new identity in Christ changes everything! Dr. Ken Nichols graduated from Cedarville University, earned a master’s degree from Wright State University, and a second master’s and a doctorate from Rosemead Graduate School of Psychology at Biola University. Dr. Nichols’ career path includes serving with Dr. David Jeremiah for 25 years as Pastor of Family Ministries, college professor and counselor. He is the founder and president of ALIVE Ministries, a counseling, conference and consulting ministry. He also teaches graduate level classes at the Center for Counseling and Family Studies at Liberty University. For over a decade, Ken and his wife Marlene have participated in missionary training and enrichment conferences for the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism. They enjoy traveling together and spending time with family. They are blessed with three children and six grandchildren.
It's a short, to-the-point, polite, that you might hand to a friend who's down in the dumps but reads.
If they read that's always a plus, and they can take this friendly short, quick read probably in one sitting. I broke mine up, but it's support material for a work-in-progress for a lead character who's been married four times, but won't give up on the dream, or fantasy, of a happy married life.
Religious tones, and advice, are laced throughout, but nicely pinched in to make for a comfortable read without over-imposing. Author Ken Nichols does a good job of sounding like an old friend, or kind and understanding uncle. Nobody's pushing, just trying to help.
It shouldn't scare anyone off: it's only 93 pages.
“When God paints a beautiful portrait of our new identity, he doesn’t start with a blank, clean canvas. There’s already a lot of paint applied in our attempts to make ourselves look competent, attractive, popular, and powerful.”
This book is deep in its simplicity and provides a framework which can be applicable to both the beginning of a journey and/or through the middle of a journey with much needed reminders.
The truths marked out in Masterpiece are timeless and can be slippery to hold onto in this world. This work helps to establish and solidify basic truths of who we are, have always been and always will be outside of worldly expectations, labels or circumstance.
Do you struggle with your worth? If you do read this book. If you do not read this book. This book will refresh you. You are a masterpiece. What a tremendous book full of insight and knowledge.
There was one chapter on identity that was really good, but the rest of the book was not very engaging or helpful. I had to read this for a class, otherwise I wouldn’t have finished it.
A great “back to the basics” book on our identity in Christ. No matter how long we’ve walked with Jesus, this book contains an abundance of truth about who we are in Christ, why we don’t believe that, and what God does about that. Great reflective questions at the end of each chapter as well!
