These is an OK set of western romances, but I did have some issues with them. My overall rating for the set is 3 stars.
One issue I had with all the books was the way the Come-By-Chance people sound so stupid. I get that they are supposed to be uneducated, but it is wrong to make them sound so dumb. Many uneducated people are just as smart, and sometimes even smarter, than educated people -- it is just a different type of knowledge.
The Tenderfoot Fur Trapper -- 2.5 stars -- It bothered me that Rose left 3 children behind when she escaped. I get that she felt like she didn't have a choice, but why keep them a secret? The people of Come-By-Chance were nice to her, and she should have known they would help her get them back.
The Unlikely Hero -- 3 stars -- In this story, Emmy-Lou is just annoying. I didn't think she was funny at all, just kind of stupid. I really couldn't see why Gilbert fell in love with her. The way she talked ALL the time would have been very annoying to most people, and especially to a man she just met.
The Outlaw and the Sheriff Who Loved Her -- 3 stars -- This one was OK, but I thought it was a little too unrealistic. A man like Calvin would have felt that he HAD to arrest Opal, even if he had fallen for her. I also don't think he would have fallen for her so quickly.
The Man Who Loved Horses -- 3 stars -- This one was OK, but the instalove was a little ridiculous, and I thought Coral's hatred of horses was kind of dumb. To think that letting her son be around horses would automatically turn him into a horse thief like his father was just stupid. And her anger at Roy near the end was truly irrational.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some problems with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had other minor flaws. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Each of the Books 5-8 are fun reading; but, perhaps Book 7 “Opal” is the best. The story about the Sheriff in river had me laughing so hard I cried. ...The who Come-By -Chance series is a great snapshot of Western life with so ver many human interest stories that kept me reading each one. The books do have numerous grammatical errors, but look passed each or your miss a great unique and imaginative collection of stories. Don’t miss them!
