Lectures on Systematic Theology

Rate this book
The Christian church has a long tradition of systematic theology, that is, studying theology and doctrine organized around fairly standard categories such as the Word of God, redemption, and Jesus Christ. This introduction to systematic theology has several distinctive features: - A strong emphasis on the scriptural basis for each doctrine and teaching - Clear writing, with technical terms kept to a minimum - A contemporary approach, treating subjects of special interest to the church today - A friendly tone, appealing to the emotions and the spirit as well as the intellect - Frequent application to life - Resources for worship with each chapter - Bibliographies with each chapter that cross-reference subjects to a wide range of other systematic theologies. These 309 lectures were recorded at Scottsdale Bible Church between 2005 - 2009.

This is the audio of Wayne Grudems 130 (or so) lectures on his Systematic Theology given over the course of a few years at Scottsdale Bible Church in AZ.

I really enjoyed these lectures. Grudem’s theology is excellent. In the lectures he is very open about issues he is less certain on, as compared with those he considers doctrinally essential. The lectures are absolutely great for getting a robust understanding of systematic theology, and also learning many of the differing view points (both on essential, and non-essential doctrine) within it.

Having said that, these are a bit of a slog. It took me 4 years apparently to get through them! (I didn’t realize until looking at the ‘played on’ dates!) And while Grudem is an amazingly gifted writer, his speaking is, shall we say, a bit less captivating. I also found myself getting a bit annoyed with the questions asked by the audience after each lecture. Almost as if the whole audience was composed of Ned Flanders and his wife 😬. Grudem is so nice he just answers every single question for a prolooooooonged period!

This was otherwise an extremely good listen, and I would recommend it to anyone desiring a better grasp on systematic theology. This resource was also absolutely free as an iTunes podcast, although I also saw it was available for purchase at christianaudio.com.

This was an amazing introduction that even an eight-year-old can understand. Although I have some slight theological differences with him, I can see how he came to his personal convictions scripturally. I highly recommend for anyone who is exploring theology and needs a basic elementary understanding.
