FBI agent Sam Sheridan’s mission is to take down a human trafficking ring and save missing teens—until he witnesses a kidnapping. Blowing his cover, Sam rescues Ella McIntire. But she’s not safe yet. While searching for the truth about her cousin’s death, Ella came too close to a dangerous secret. And now only Sam can protect her from the men determined to silence her.
Whew, was this one a wild ride! I wasn't able to put it down as Ella shows up to clean out her dead cousin's apartment and finds a clue that perhaps the drug overdose wasn't an accidental suicide, after all. Before she knows it, she's been kidnapped and she isn't sure that rough-around-the-edges Sam, who rescues her, can be trusted.
I enjoyed the characters and the suspense but at the end it wasn't quite as tight a plot as it started out to be, and Ella makes some extremely risky moves. However, the ending was satisfying and of course it all worked out all right.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.
A quick read that's a little over 200 pages. As with the previous novel in this series, Wren, the supervisor of the group likes to put the witness at risk in the final scene. Having the group work out of the "safe" house, makes it no longer safe. Agents coming and going, allowing criminals to visit, bringing in uncleared technology...you know where stupid behavior leads...
Ella is trying to figure out who tarnished her cousins name. She never thought it would wind her up in the killers webs of lies, it quickly did. Ella is a strong character both mentally and physically, but everyone has their breaking point. FBI Agent, Sam, is able to connect with Ella on a deeper level and keep her moving and motivated to survive. Believing her cousins death was not suicide, Sam formed the foundation of trust with Ella. Sam and Ella were working against all odds and survived.
Ms. McCoy does a great job of making novels packed with intense action, the characters are always on their toes. The physical and emotional toll these characters took, was considerable. The supporting characters added to the plot, it gave a deeper sense of trust and community within the small group. Ms. McCoy made her plot believable, while touching on very sensitive issues. The chemistry between Ella and Sam was a little harder to believe in, it felt a little forced. The relationship developed in a time packed with fear and fight or flight, it would be difficult to have a sweep you off your feet romance. Gone is a good read, I would have liked to see a little more of the relationship before the happy ending; however I’m still satisfied with how it all worked out. I would recommend Gone to readers who enjoy more suspense than romance, its a quick read with a happy ending!
Gone was a great suspense read. It starts out with the hero, Sam, rescuing Ella...although she doesn't know at first if he is telling the truth and it takes a while for her to trust him. I think one of the most frustrating things about this story to me was how the heroine seemed to just do things sometimes without thinking.
I liked the romance. I thought it was cute how it developed and I loved the ending. I also really liked all of the secondary characters.
All in all, Gone was a very good read. I recommend it to fans of romantic suspense.

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the second book in the FBI: Special Crimes Unit series. I have read the first book in this series before picking up this book, but I do think you could read this book as a standalone without any problems. I read this book by listening to the audiobook. I was pulled into this book right from the beginning, and I loved the suspense and action in this book. This is a fast paced book with a ton of suspense and action with a little romance mixed into it. Great Read.
You know what attracted me to this book first? The title. That one word raises so many questions and I wanted all the answers. Immediately. This is definitely a consume-in-one-gulp read.
How's this for an opening line: "She woke up in darkness so thick she thought she'd been buried alive." Just as intriguing as that abrupt title, right? McCoy sure knows how to grab a reader's attention -- and hold her hostage. But unlike the predicament Ella finds herself in, the author's form of kidnapping is much more enjoyable. :-)
I love a good team suspense and this second book in the FBI Special Crimes Unit series is definitely that. The author manages to find time to establish team members and the way they relate to one another without taking away from the intensity of the suspense or the developing romance. Knowing the whole team, catching glimpses of their personalities, including quirks, has sparked my imagination and guarantees I will be following up with future novels.
FBI agent Sam Sheridan has witnessed a woman being kidnapped and he knows that he has to save her even if he blows his cover. Ella McIntire doesn’t believe her friend died of an overdose and when she starts poking around she finds herself tied up in a shipping container. She is rescued by Sam whom she doesn’t trust at first but time and time again he’s there for her. Someone is constantly trying to take her life as well as those trying to protect her. Sam and Ella figure out that there’s a connection between the medical clinic and the missing kids and they need to find out who’s behind all this before time runs out for them to have a future together.
3.5 stars. Inspirational romantic suspense is an unusual genre for me. Romantic suspense, or Love Inspired Suspense from the cover, with reservations is just my thing, but religion in the mix is the difference. Ms. McCoy does a great job of lightly weaving the religious parts into the story. A book club friend said that wouldn't anyone pray when being chased through the woods by a killer. Probably, but the heartfelt prayers are noted in this story.
This clean inspirational romance from Harlequin books wasn't as good as the first book in the series, but still enjoyable. The first book featured a re-kindled love which worked better in a short time frame and fewer pages. And the religious aspect justified the lack of sexual activity that modern Harlequin romances are now known for.
It's a short book, under 250 pages, so the character development is light. But there is lots of action, almost too much action. I appreciated that
Ella McIntire is a non-fiction journalist from Charlotte, NC, but in Newcastle, ME after her cousin dies from a drug overdose. The attraction and trust between Sam and Ella seemed rushed. Wolves in cop's clothing were disturbing. Real police officers on Organization's payroll or criminals impersonating police?
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Gone. This is the second book in the FBI: Special Crimes Unit Series. This is an awesome read! It is well written, action packed, and full of intrigue. I know you are going to love it, after all who doesn't love Shirlee's books. Journalist Ella McIntire comes to town to go through her cousin's things. Ruby had recently died of an overdose but Ella knew that there was no way Ruby would take any drugs. So being an investigative reporter she sets out to find the killer. As she is waiting to receive the keys to Ruby's office she is abducted. When awakes she is tied and in a dark place. She is rescued by a guy claiming to be FBI but how is she suppose to trust this stranger? Undercover FBI Special Agent Sam Sheridan is working in the clinic when he sees a man abduct a woman. Sam follows and when the man leaves he rescues her. In order to save her he must blow his cover. He has been sent to investigate a human trafficking ring and save the missing teens from this area. How is he suppose to save the girl and find the kidnappers? A journey of discovering who is trying to steal these teens; a test to try to keep alive when everyone seems to be out to stop them, and a struggle not to lose their hearts to one another. God has a plan for these two, a good plan and not for evil. God has a plan for you too, a plan for a hope and a future. Give him your heart and watch Him work in your life.
"Gone" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. It's the second in a series, but it works as a standalone. There was plenty of suspense from the repeated attempts to kill the heroine. Sam is a patient, handsome hero who keeps his cool and knows how to keep Ella safe. I understand why she comes to like him.
However, she's like a deer in the headlights. When something spooked her, she panicked and acted irrationally, often dashing directly toward danger. Which made Sam's job doubly difficult. I suppose most people would act this way in real life, but I'm baffled by why Sam is attracted to her (except her looks). At least, when not panicked, she was willing to follow directions that would keep her safe.
I was surprised that a competent, special FBI team could not anticipate what happened at the very end as I knew what was going to happen, so it felt like a forced turn of events to create suspense. And not much time was spent developing the characters, so they came across as somewhat one dimensional.
The Christian element was the heroine deciding that God does have a plan even during tragic events. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, this is not my favorite novel by this author, but it was still an enjoyable fluff suspense.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.
I got into this book from the start. Ella has been kidnapped and is clueless as to why. Sam saw the kidnapping and is determined to save her. I loved that Ella didn't trust Sam at all to begin with. You couldn't blame her either. Who would trust a complete stranger who says they are there to help you right after you've been kidnapped. Sam was a great guy though. He had a job to do but saving Ella came first.
I was happy to have read the previous book about this team but it isn't necessary to follow this book. It stands on its own quite well. I'm hoping the author gives each of the team members their own story because you get to liking them through the series and want each to get their own happy ending. There is action, trust, betrayal, and love in this book. The author did a great job of keeping things interesting and me wanting to finish to see what happens next.
It was a 4/5 for me. Truly enjoying this series.
Thank you to the publisher for the copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Gone is one calculating, devious, thrilling, mysterious story is awesome - plain awesome - Sam is looking into the human trafficking ring when he saves Ella in the process and ruins his anonymity. How does he do that - well I think you probably can figure that one out - in this one act of Christian love - selflessness - makes Sam the guardian of Ella - now I don't mean parental guardian - -a personal guardian over her - because the guys who tried to get her do not want her opening her mouth - they want to permanently silence her but they have to get through Sam first. Who will come out on top? Well you will not believe what happens next - now that I wont share with you because I am not going to ruin the story - but it is so worth the read and worth the wait to find out for yourselves. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley' all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

Ella is asking questions about the death of a cousin and seems to have caught the eyes of the wrong people. Undercover FBI agent Sam witnesses a kidnapping while trying to take down a trafficking ring and can't help but break cover trying to do whats right and save her. Now hell do everything he can to make sure that she is safe as people are trying to make sure they don't get away.
I love when a short book can are action packed with barely a moments break. I loved getting to know the characters and seeing what Ella did to catch the eyes of these people who came for her. I loved how protective Sam was for her even if it was he job and that he was not the type of person who would back down when witnessing something happen. Although that does seem like bad work ethic he should've expected something like this when going undercover... I loved that there was so much going on to keep the readers guessing. Overall pretty great book I really enjoyed it!
FBI agent Sam Sheridan has been working undercover to dismantle a human trafficking ring. 17 teens missing from the same area in just over a year is an epidemic, and he's got his eye on the prize - until, he witnesses a kidnapping and sees an opportunity to rescue one. He blows his cover to take Ella McIntire out of harm's way, but is stunned to discover, instead of a young teen, a grown woman. As it becomes increasingly clear that Ella is more target than victim, Sam employs everything he's learned as an agent to keep her safe. Will it be enough?
When Ella learned of her cousin's death due to an opioid overdose, she knows something is fishy. Her cousin's mother died of a drug overdose, and her cousin wouldn't even take an aspirin, if she could help it. No way, would she ever OD. Finding herself bound hand and foot in a shipping container, means she's gotten too close. Since her cousin and only family is dead, will anyone even miss her if she disappears?
Gone by Shirlee McCoy takes readers on a thrill ride that careens around twists that I didn't see coming. Suspense readers will especially enjoy the story, although there's enough romance to satisfy the romance reader, too. I definitely recommend reading this one!
Gripping intrigue! We're quickly pulled into the story as the second book in Shirlee McCoy's FBI: Special Crimes Unit series kicks off. The characterization is strong as this pair try to figure out who's guilty of what and whether they can count on each other to help get the bad guys. An entertaining read for sure!
FBI Special Agent Sam Sheridon is undercover on a missing teen/human trafficking assignment when he sees a woman being kidnapped and blows his cover to rescue her.
Ella McIntire doesn't believe the stories that are being told about her cousin's death, so while she's in town packing up her belongings, she's doing some investigation on her own. She never expects to get hit over the head and kidnapped in doing so! She's super thankful Sam was there to save her, but she's not sure how much info she can trust him with.
This is book two in the FBI: Special Crimes Unit series. You miss a little history of the main characters but it is still considered a stand alone book.
If you like suspense, action, and mystery you will enjoy this book.
I enjoyed getting reacquainted with this crime unit. If you have not read book one, you will not have trouble understanding this one. This books focus is on Sam Sheridan. He is deep undercover, yet when his cover is blown he will stop at nothing to protect Ella.
Ella is just trying to find out the truth about her friends death. Yet when she stumbles into much more can she allow Sam to help her and still keep her distance?
I look forward to more in this series. I enjoy the writing style of Shirle McCoy
Ella McIntire is in town to pack up her cousin's Ruby's belongings. While investigating her cousin's supposed overdose, she stumbles into a human trafficking ring. Fortunately for her, undercover FBI agent Sam Sheridan sees her being kidnapped and blows his cover to rescue her. Ella is kind of a scared-y cat due to something that happened to her in the past. However, Sam sees a strength in her that she finally discovers herself. As they work together to figure out who is in charge of the trafficking ring, they grow as individuals as well as a couple.
Gone (FBI Special Crimes Unit Book 2) Shirlee McCoy
Undercover agent means just that...you are looking to get information to bring down the bad guys without letting them know. Sam has to make the decision whether to break his undercover job to save Ella. No question about it, he saves her and with the help of the SCU agents they start down the path of keeping her alive at completing their mission. Twists and turns that keep you reading until the end. Strong characters that strive to protect the innocent.
This is part 2 in a series, but I read it just fine as a standalone. It was so good; I may read other books in this series. I loved the non-stop action, and suspense. FBI agent Sam Sheridan was working undercover to take down a human trafficking ring. He notices people moving a lady. He blows his cover to rescue Ella McIntire. She is a survivor. She wasn’t going to just sit back, and wait for help to arrive. Ella fought Sam not knowing he was there to save her. I loved the bond that grew between the two throughout the story. This was an excellent book.
The book starts out with Ella realizing she's been kidnapped and the action takes off from there. Ella is in town trying to convince others that Ruby's death isn't what it seems. FBI agent Sam Sheridan blows his cover rescuing her. The FBI is investigating a group called The Organization who seems to be behind the disappearances of quite a few people--mostly teens and young adults who can be sent into a life of trafficking.
This first one in this series felt heavier and darker than the past books that I have read by Ms. McCoy. I did enjoy reading it though. This book felt more like her typical paced book with heavy moments but light with faith and humor and good relationships to anchor it. I loved Sam and Ella's characters and love story!
I liked this one, it was a good, fast-paced, action-packed story and a quick, easy read, as you would expect from anything in the Harlequin realm. However, to me, it just wasn’t as good as the first in the series. I will probably continue the series because I want to see what happens with the rest of the team members.
I really enjoyed this book. It contained intrique, mystery, faith in God and romance. I'm glad the human trafficking ring was shut down. I'm books and in real life,, it's one of the most heinous crimes I can think of.
This is my second book by Shirlee McCoy. I loved this book. It was fast paced. Lots of holding my breath as I forgot to breathe at times. The narrator was superb. I can't wait until I read the next one in the series.
Teens just kept disappearing. They had no family to search for them, to even know they are missing. I don't think we realize how much this happens in our world today. This story makes you aware of what is going on around you. Good clean romance.
