It has been more than twenty years since his newborn daughter was kidnapped out of the hospital nursery. Nate’s first wife never recovered from that disaster. Even though Nate healed and made a life for himself with a new family, he has never stopped looking for his firstborn. Since then, life has treated him well. He has no reason to complain; he works hard at a very interesting, sometimes exciting and dangerous job, and takes pride in his family. Still, he sometimes wonders what happened to Sally Miller. Where is she, and what does she look like? Is she in trouble? As the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for.”
Dorothy May Mercer is a retired musician, busier than ever as president of two companies, writer and entrepreneur. She has published five books in seven months and is having a ball doing it! She and her husband have two lakefront homes in Michigan where they ski in winter and boat in summer. Hobbies are traveling, reading and playing the piano. The McBride series books are good old-fashioned detective cop stories with new technology and great looking girls thrown in.
Nate: The Search by Dorothy May Mercer opens with a concise and interesting prologue that explains how Nate lost his daughter, stolen by her surrogate mother, and later his wife to depression and cancer. Nate, secretly a Federal Air Marshall, remarries and has a family. When the story opens they are late-teens, but he never forgets Sally, his first daughter, and is determined to find her. Sally, unaware of her strange history, took out loans; her single mom couldn’t afford to put her through college. Now, she’s working as a senior flight attendant, and something shady on the side. She plans to stop when the loans are paid back, but will she? Will Nate find his lost daughter in time to save her or die in the attempt?
Dorothy May Mercer draws the reader in to both Nate and Sally’s lives very cleverly. Nate’s second family are vividly alive, whilst Sally’s mother has dementia and lives in a care home, yet their lives run in a strange opposing parallel. Federal Air Marshal Nate Goodrich travels frequently by air on the lookout for trouble, and Sally works not just Alaska Airlines but the passengers for her own profit. Nate is on the trail of an al Qaeda plot to sabotage aircraft in the making, and Sally acts for a mysterious agency. The plot twists and turns in true thriller style yet remains strongly character-driven with a large, memorable, cast. Nate: The Search is a sparkling five-star story I enjoyed a lot, mystified and firmly hooked.
If you have never listened to a book, you must try it! It is a whole new amazing experience. Of course, the "voice" makes all the difference in quality. The surrogate mother runs off with Nate daughter, then his wife dies. Year pass, Nate remarries, has children with new wife. Children grow up go to college, have their own lives. Missing daughter is a stewardess and Nate an air marshal. Homeland Security, threats of terrorism, and life’s ordinary up and downs get in the way. The tome has an interesting beginning and a weaker finish. Overall, a decent book.
I picked it up and had a hard time putting it down. This is a great read with a lot going for it. A family saga, it is a mystery as well. The two major players and their stories are woven into a seamless whole with no jarring transitions from one to the other. And the secondary characters and their story do not distract from the tale. Great read.
I love books which teach me new facts and although I have hard of Air Marshall this took me right inside their world and it was fascinating. From the first few pages with the disappearance of a baby girl from the hospital, I was hooked and curious to see when (we could suspect) Nate eventually found Sally. Difficult ot write a lot without spoilers but I did enjoy the read.
