Years ago, DI Frank Miller caught a notorious serial killer and put him away for life. This man taunts Miller from the psychiatric hospital where he's incarcerated. He tells Miller he'll see him soon. Now he's escaped and he wants Miller to play a game to find a victim they didn't know about. Senior officers know the killer had help in escaping, and as an investigation is launched, suspicion falls on Miller. He's then suspended from duty. Disobeying orders to stay off the case, he follows a clue he's been given, but he's attacked and left for dead. Then things escalate out of control. A warrant is issued for Miller's arrest and now he's on the run, being hunted by colleagues. Miller knows he is on his own now, and time is running out, but help comes from an unexpected source. Together, they work to uncover the truth, but one man will do anything to make sure they die before that happens...
John Carson is the author of the DI Frank Miller detective series. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and lived there most of his life. In 2006, he emigrated to New York State with his American wife and two daughters. They now live in a small town in the Hudson Valley where his wife was brought up, with a German Shepherd, a Beagle mix and four cats.
If you enjoy a crime novel that grips your attention from page one and takes you on a roller coaster journey throughout this is the book (series ) for you. Just as I thought I had got things sussed, I was proven wrong and had to read on and revaluate. If like me you enjoy trying to work out the outcome as you read this book will keep you on your toes. Best read as a series as the core characters and relationships are developed in each novel and in a way that made me really care about each of them. Would strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a challenging plot.
I have read all the books in this series, mainly because they are set in Edinburgh. The carry on plot was a bit tiresome and the ending just downright annoying. These are quite interesting books and the plots are certainly complicated. In fact a little too complicated with a few too many characters. These books are certainly fast paced and quite thrilling at times. There is a soap opera feel to some of the story and the writing lacks the crispness of say, Ian Rankin. Certainly up there with Stuart Macleod in that the language and conversation is crude and revolting at times. References to underwear and sex abound. Not sure if I will keep reading this series.
A few glaring errors or would be 5 stars . Was Tamara a doctor or a nurse ? Anyway , 2 previous characters were smuggled out of a secure psychiatric prison hospital. Frank was being implicated . Behind the scenes we have Mr Black and Mr Blue running around setting him up. Children and adults were abducted . And Frank thinks he's seeing his deceased wife running around town . Complicated and scary . I finished the book not sure why Frank was being tormented though . I might have missed it, but not going to reread the book .
Four stars only because someone allowed this book to be published with so many errors. I'm guessing "I" is a shortcut JC uses when writing. Sadly, no one fixed the eyes and it made it difficult at times to figure out who was who :(
As for the book, it was a ride! Truly enjoyed it, and truly, truly loved the last chapter. Thanks for that, Mr. Carson!
Frank Miller's life is never dull. I almost read the whole story in one sitting, but alas couldn't stay awake. Now I can get the washing done. Hurry with the next installment. Ann
The best in the series... So many twists... References back to earlier novels... Cliffhanger at the end....
Probably the best in the series.... So many twists in the story... You know Frank is innocent, but who is behind it all... Real page turner... And a cliffhanger ending....
This is an exciting, confusing, heart pounding adventure from start to finish! Lots of different story lines, that may or may not intersect. I do not like Bruce Hagan, however, and hope we have seen the last of him. Terrific series!
A great read during lock down. I t helps that I know Edinburgh but don't let that put you off. Plot seems a bit far fetched but it all becomes clear in the end. Cliffhanger at the end so can't wait for the next book.
John Carson is a master in making every page full of suspense, twists and leaving you wanting to find out where it’s going. It’s a book that is had to put down. A must read
