The Four Kingdoms #1-2.5

The Four Kingdoms Box Set One

Rate this book
The first three interconnected stand-alone fairy tale retellings from The Four Kingdoms series

Book 1 - The Princess Companion: A Retelling of The Princess and the Pea

Danger and romance await a woodcutter’s daughter in a royal palace.

One dark and stormy night, lost and alone, Alyssa finds herself knocking on the door of a castle. After a lifetime spent in the deep forest, she has no idea what to expect on the other side.

What she finds is two unruly young princesses and one very handsome prince. When Alyssa accepts the job of Princess Companion she knows her life will change. What she doesn't know is that the royal family is about to be swept up in unexpected danger and intrigue, and that she just might be the only thing standing between her kingdom and destruction.

This retelling of the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, reimagines the risks and rewards that come when one royal family goes searching for a true princess.

Book 2 - The Princess Fugitive: A Reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood

Princess Ava used to be a weapon—sharp, strong and beautiful. But when she fails at her most important task, she's forced to flee from her own family.

Only her personal bodyguard, Hans, remains loyal. Hans claims to know the real Ava but she finds that hard to believe—after all, she's been the villain so long that she can't remember anything else.

Deep in exile, Ava learns her kingdom needs a hero and she might be the only one who can save it. The catch? She'll have to ally herself with the very people she blames for her downfall.

But in a game of life and death where the stakes are an entire kingdom, winning over her enemies will only be the beginning. Can one fugitive save her people, her kingdom and, hardest of all, herself?

In this reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, the girl in the red hood has been swallowed up by the wolf and must decide if she's willing to fight for her freedom, no matter the cost.

Novella 2.5 - Happily Ever Afters: A Reimagining of Snow White and Rose Red

Sometimes a fairy tale ending is only the beginning…

Sarah and Evelyn have already risked everything to help Ava win a crown. But they soon learn that a coronation is a beginning, not an ending. Not everyone in Rangmere is happy to see the young queen on the throne, and intrigue and danger lurk all around.

The cousins find themselves fighting not only for their new kingdom but also for their own survival in the royal court. When a new threat emerges, the two girls must defeat it to both save the crown and secure their own Happily Ever Afters.

Melanie Cellier grew up on a staple diet of books, books and more books. And although she got older, she never stopped loving children’s and young adult novels.
She always wanted to write one herself, but it took three careers and three different continents before she actually managed it.

She now feels incredibly fortunate to spend her time writing from her home in Adelaide, Australia where she keeps an eye out for koalas in her backyard. Her staple diet hasn’t changed much, although she’s added choc mint Rooibos tea and Chicken Crimpies to the list.

She writes young adult fantasy including her Spoken Mage series, and her Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series which are made up of linked stand-alone stories that retell classic fairy tales.

This discovery was worth the risk!

Her writing is so good! Nothing like some YA books that seem dumbed down in their sentence structure and plot. I loved all the characters and really got lost in the world of the 4 kingdoms!

The first book was a refreshing retake on the princess and the pea! The main character was not annoying with voicing her insecurities over and over (like some YA heroines do) . There were plenty of surprises in the plot !

The second book had a bit more magic and identity of the wolf was a very realistic take on who the real enemy is.

The novella was hands down the best novella I have ever read! The story and plot were just as intriguing as a regular length novel!

If you are in a princess and other world mood read these books!

Such an awesome collection! I think I enjoyed it even more than the first time!

The Princess Companion- 5 stars
This was my favorite of these first three books. I love Alyssa- who doesn't love bookworms- and her relationships with both Max and the twins. I also love the plot twists and surprises. The plotline is so fun and I read it in basically one five-hour sitting.(I spent literally my entire Sunday afternoon reading XD)

The Princess Fugitive- 4.5 stars
This book... the Red Riding Hood element was awesome, I loved seeing Ava's transformation... such a good redemption story! The only reason I cut off a half star was because the writing style wasn't quite as immersing as the other books.

Happily Ever Afters- 5 stars
I originally gave this somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.5 stars, but the five stars were well-earned. I loved seeing the continuation of Sarah and Evelyn's story and the repercussions of what happened at the end of The Princess Fugitive. I also loved the characters and the glimpse into court life.(Honestly, that's one of my favorite things about the Four Kingdoms)

Overall
This whole series of fairytale retellings is so fun and clean! I highly recommend it for all lovers of fantasy and romance and fairy tales and political intrigue and all that fun stuff... 11+

I first read these books several years ago, and I decided to re-read them via audiobook… and let me just say that they are better than I remembered. From Alyssa’s careful insight to Ava’s growth to Evelyn’s and Sarah’s determination — they’re all truly remarkable female characters. And Esther Wayne’s voice is lovely. All in all, an excellent experience.

The Princess Companion: 5 stars
I love this author’s retellings! I have read her Beyond the Four Kingdoms series, which starts with a book focusing on Lily, who is a child in this first book of the Four Kingdoms series. They are clean, sweet romances, with great friendships represented as well. There is always suspense, but I know there will be a happy ending!
I loved all of Alyssa’s interactions with Lily and Sophie, and that she didn’t have any illusions about her status when it came to the royal family. Max’s coldness at the beginning was really confusing to me, so I was looking forward to that being explained. I don’t recall it being a very satisfactory explanation, although we did know he didn’t want to be forced into a marriage, so maybe he was wary of all women?

I liked the inclusion of Queen Eleanor’s story as well, and her and Alyssa’s closeness over time. I’m excited that some of the other stories in this series are about some of the princesses we met in this one, like Marie!

The Princess Fugitive: 5 stars
I love this author’s stories and characters so much! The romance is alway sweet, but the friendships are what make them even better! I loved Ava’s transformation from cold and aloof to friendly and open-hearted. She had a great cast of characters to help her along the way. I loved that we got more of Aldric and Mathilde, a cameo by Max and Alyssa, and new characters like Sarah and Evelyn who were a big force in Ava’s transformation. Furthermore, Hans saw the best in Ava even when she didn’t see the best in herself, and that was encouraging and refreshing that she saw herself as the villain at some points. It was also really cool to get an appearance by the High King.

Happily Ever Afters: 4 stars
I loved the continuation of Evelyn and Sarah’s storylines! They stayed in Rangmeros, so we were able to see more of Ava, too. I loved the new characters (their respective love interests) and was only disappointed that there weren’t definitive tie-the-knot type endings, even though they were alluded to. I have no idea what the story of Snow White and Rose Red is though, so I have no idea how close or not to the original fairytale this is.
This novella also points towards who may be the villain in the next book.

The Four Kingdoms Box Set 1: Books 1, 2 & 2.5

The Four Kingdoms Box Set 1: Books 1, 2 & 2.5 ~~ I absolutely loved this collection! Melanie Cellier does a phenomenal job reimagining classic fairytales with strong, intelligent heroines and vibrant world-building. Each story felt familiar yet fresh, weaving together magic, political intrigue, romance, and sisterhood.

Book 1 gave me all the “Beauty and the Beast” vibes in the best way—with a heroine who actually uses her brain and heart. Book 2 spun a creative twist on “Cinderella,” but with a plot that dives far deeper than just a ball and a slipper. And Book 2.5? A shorter novella, but it packed in so much character development and really bridged the stories together beautifully.

The narration by Esther Wane brought each kingdom to life—I could clearly picture every castle, forest, and dress. I didn’t want to stop listening. This is perfect for fans of fairytale retellings with clever women, light romance, and clean, uplifting fantasy.

Highly recommend if you love stories that feel magical but grounded in emotion and purpose. I’m already diving into the next set! !!

Melanie Cellier is now officially my new obsession. What a delightful and enjoyable series this is! I'm actually listening to and reading these books at the same time. I'm so grateful to my GR friends for their reviews of her books. This is why I find GR such a useful tool.

What a joy and relief to immerse myself in these stories during a personally tough family visit. They literally helped me stay sane and grounded. Although her writing isn't religious, I am reminded of C.S. Lewis' Narnia stories. Without any self-righteousness or preachiness, there's a spirituality thread running through the Four Kingdoms series which deals with courage, faith, redemption, and forgiveness. And, of course, as always, I love the snarky dialogue, the love stories, and the satisfying HEAs.

Cellier has created this wonderful, imaginary world and has rewritten all of my favorite fairy tales, populating them with likeable and relatable characters.

No profanity or sex. Subject matter: PG

I am a fan of fairy tale retellings. The problem is that such retellings tend to just re-state the original stories in more contemporary language. The author did not limit herself to doing that in these books. She kept the original backgrounds, settings and storylines, but embellished and expanded on the characters and the scenarios to make them more realistic and more relatable. That resulted in characters that leap off the page and demand our attention. That also results in scenarios which make sense in the context of the storylines but made them more relevant and plausible even to us, however surprising and thrilling they might be the characters. This is an engaging series, too deep and engrossing to be so trite as to be charming. If you like the original Grimm's Fairytales, Seanan McGuire or Selene Charles, you will find this to be lighter and no less fun.

1 - Princess and The Pea
(5 stars)
This is a wonderful book. I really liked Alyssa’s character, that she wasn’t actually a princess but an intelligent, wise, and kind commoner. The romance was sweet and natural, and more realistic than the standard True Love tale. The ending seemed perhaps a bit rushed, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

2 - Little Red Riding Hood
(5 stars)
Also an excellent book (along with 2.5 after it). Such a unique spin on the Little Red Riding Hood story. I loved Ava’s redemption story and the role the High King played in it. This is an exciting action-romance wrapped around the main ‘bad guy’ of book 1.

Content:
There’s no foul language or sex. The romance is clean and there was minimal violence. There is a High King and godmothers that appear to act as gift-bestowing guardian angels… but I wouldn’t call it truly Christian.

Step into another world...

Step into another world, a world with heroes and heroines battling the forces of evil. No worries - good eventually overcomes bad, and all is well. Before that can happen, though, a lot of things are happening. Drama, humor, action, romance, and a little bit of magic; the Four Kingdoms books by Melanie Cellier have it all.
I am a 70 year old retired RN, and I absolutely adore reading Ms Cellier's books about the Four Kingdoms. I enjoy her style of writing; it is intelligent and intriguing. I highly recommend them to others. Now I'm going to sit back down and read them all over again!

The Four Kingdoms 1

The Four Kingdoms Boxset 1:

The Princess Companion

A romantic story full of suspense and mystery. I enjoyed this fantasy retelling of Princess and the pea.

The Princess Fugitive

I’ll admit going in I hated the main character for what happened in the first book but throughout the story I warmed up to her and her handsome body guard. I enjoyed the high stakes and suspense throughout the story.

Happily Ever Afters

A great little addition to the series that includes not only one but two romance stories. I enjoyed seeing more of the previous characters as well and things are taking a turn for the dark in the kingdoms.

Absolutely Brilliant Storytelling

This is author has a way with words. I know we can say that about any person brave enough to put pen to paper and put it out there to the masses, but this author has captivated my 11 year old daughter in a way that I am thrilled about. I honestly don’t know what she’s going to do once she’s read her way through this authors work.
This retelling has a way of pulling you into the story and you won’t be disappointed grabbing by yourself a copy. We also got the audio and I also highly recommend grabbing it as well. I don’t have to worry about anything inappropriate while listening this book in the car on trips.

Ok I am embarrassed to admit how much I LOVED these books. I have read ALL of them not just this box set but all the others also. I was hooked. Yes they are totally cheesy princess marries dream guy and everything. BUT... I loved them. It was the perfect fantasy get away I needed to clear my mind and rest with a great book. I dont know if the author is Christian or not but let me tell you there are one liners throughout all of her books that proclaim the Gospel. I just loved these books and will be saving them for my daughter to read one day.

I enjoyed reading this book. Melanie is a great author.

Loved this collection of stories written by Melody Melanie Sawyer. She’s very creative. I couldn’t put them down until I finished. I found it interesting how she tied the different fairytales together. But, I guess the fairytale world is a small world, so the likelihood of them interacting with each other is increased. Melanie is good at combining romance and battle scenes. The suspense kept me hooked while the detail get me satisfied. Also, the intrigue associated with Royal life and court was interesting.

My view

I loved this book with all of my heart. It was clean and exciting! I loved the way the author sucks you in, and keeps you wanting more. The sad part is, for whatever reason, there seems to be missing pages in this book. They just appear blank on my phone screen. So I don't know if there is a malfunction in the producing, or editing of this book, but it makes me really sad when I can't properly enjoy all the parts of the book because it is empty on my phone.

This set of fairy tails retold has been one of the best I’ve read in a long time. The author did a fabulous job weaving each of the characters lives together with the common theme of truth, grace and love. Each of the three fairy tails follows the idea of the original, but with a new twist that makes each story hard to put down. These stories were very well written and I’m looking forward to reading the next series.

Nice.

It was a nice read but I expected a lot more after having just finished the spoken mage series.
I’m not quite sure what was missing, but I struggled to get through the first book. The second book interested me more, but the hero’s character wasn’t compelling enough somehow.
Overall a nice read with some interesting characters, themes and plot lines, but the spoken mage series was much better.

I was hesitant…

I believed that it had to be for an adolescent reader and while it was pretty satisfying for the adolescent still in me the grown up me enjoyed the story twists too. However, I won’t be telling these stories to my grandkids just yet. If you can still watch Weird Science and get a laugh or two then you probably won’t regret the time spent with these books. Have alexa read it to you, her dramatizations are hilarious.

I loved the Princess Companion so I couldn't pass up the chance to get this boxset with the sequel Princess Fugitive and the Happy Ever Afters novella.

Princess Fugitive actually made me cry happy tears at the end. The redemption of the villain was handled beautifully. Melanie Cellier continues to impress!

Cute, but predictable. These are retellings of The Princess and the Pea, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White & Rose Red. The last one leaves you on a bit of a cliffhanger, so you feel like you have to read the next set. However, they are cute and clean, so they are fun for middle school age and older people who like fairy tales.

Interesting twists

I love the links that the author draws from her stories to the original stories. She also introduces many interest twists that I did not see coming, especially with the progression of characters introduced in the first book that were revisited later.

Box set love!

Melanie Cellier is a great story teller. Her retelling of fairy tales are fun and creative. I loved how the women in the series are strong, confident and in charge. They are the heroines.

Love the series! I’m on the 3rd boxed set right now. There are a few places that need some editing. In one spot, a character is talking about another character and the name changes from Henry to Harry then back again. This confused me for a moment as a different character is named Harry.
