Not only does she learn she's a witch and has a powerful destiny linked to her long-lost parents but she soon discovers the quaint town is full of secrets, lies, and underlying darkness. As the sun rises and the body of a local scuba instructor is pulled from the ocean, Kelly finds herself drawn into a dangerous murder mystery that will challenge everything she believes about herself, the town, and her family's history. With the clock ticking and a killer on the loose, Kelly must risk everything in order to stop the darkness from taking hold of another innocent life. Now if she can just get a handle on these new powers, her brother's antics, her batty aunt Barb, and a hot surfer with eyes for her, things might just work out. Haven Witches
Haven Witches Mystery, Book 1
By: Emma Watts
Narrated by: Natalie Naudus
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I really enjoyed this book, it was obviously a start to a new series and one I want to continue with. A gal moves in with her rich brother after a failed marriage. She doesn't realize she has the potential to be a witch or have magic. There is a murder in town. The whole town seems to have secrets and is small. It leaves the the upcoming books open for a lot of potential. This was a fun romp with a cute guys, crazy antics, trying to figure out magic, and underneath all that there is the need to find the killer. Good book.
The narrator did a fine job of keeping the book flowing smoothly and voices clear and perfectly performed. Nice job.

I enjoy a good cozy mystery and this was a fun one. Kelly moves to the coastal town of Haven to move in with her brother till she gets back on her feet. But this town is about to change her life forever when she is told that she is in fact a witch and she has a big destiny to fill.

There isn't much to say about the plot other than it was an easy book to read. The plot was paced nicely and it was a fast read. There wasn't anything memorable about the whole book and nothing stood out, in fact, I read this about a week or so ago and the details are already hazy. I did enjoy it, just didn't love it.

I did really like Kelly. Her marriage failed and she moves in with her brother. Her brother is very wealthy and I liked that Kelly was more grounded. She didn't like the butler waiting on her etc. She was smart and was easy to like.

In all, this was a good read. While I didn't love it, I liked it enough to want to continue wit the series. This sets the scene for, what I hope will become a great series.

Natalie Naudus read this well. She was easy to listen to and her tones and cadences were really good. I look forward to listening to more from her.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts

Well, I'm into my Kindle Unlimited junk reading mode. This author writes a decent cozy mystery. Trying to add magical elements to it - not so much. She’d do better to avoid the paranormal in her work. She didn’t need it in this story and just throwing in anything and everything ‘magical’ periodically was jarring in its lack of believability.

Has potential

The storyline is good, with a more than adequate flow of dialog. I’m considering continuing with the second book because I do believe there’s potential here. The issues I have are the grammatical errors and dearth of appropriate punctuation, basic errors that should have been caught on beta readings, much less by a proofreader or editor. Here’s hoping that as the author gains some experience, her writing will become more polished.

Meh

For the first bit of the book, I struggled with the awkward sentences, and poor grammar. This story is cute and could have benefited greatly from an editor. I was interested enough in the story to try to overlook those things, but it did bug me right up to the end. Also, I noticed a few British colloquialisms sprinkled throughout, that would not be uttered by anyone from the United States. Why put those in a book about people from NJ and CA?

Simplistic and fluffy

This so-called "book" needed to be proofread and then edited twice more before being published. Full of run-on sentences, cliches, changes in tense and poor grammar. It also appears to be a rip-off of at least two other series in which a young adult woman discovers she is a witch and then goes on to solve murders. Not exactly original.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

"Haven Witches" is a good introduction to the series. We meet a newly divorced unemployed Kelly Winters who is just moving in with her younger brother, unaware that she's a witch whose destiny is to work against an old curse... It's a good starting point for a fast-paced, rather short (a little under 4 hours of listening) cozy mystery in which magic (or witchcraft) is an investigatory tool:)

Kelly is an amiable character as well as quite an intelligent PI. She comes to terms with her being a witch a little too quickly for my taste, but then, as she uses the newly discovered skills to further on her investigation into the murder case, I can overlook that implausibility:)
The murder plot itself is not very complicated but develops smoothly over several conversations and is logically solved.

As it is a set up for a series, the book contains quite a lot of information that does not really relate to the murder at hand, but gives us an insight into the world of the town of Haven, Kelly's family history and the curse she's to work against, as well as allows us to meet at least some of the characters we are probably going to meet again and again: Ivy, who introduces Kelly into the world of magic, Jamie - Kelly's younger brother, Scott - the handsome police officer leading the investigation, and many others. They are quite skillfully drawn with just a few lines here and there but their personalities come out to the light in all their diversity...

As for the narration, Ms Naudus does quite a good job here. The pace of her reading is rather fast, but clear. She is also quite good at diversifying voices, both male and female.

Overall, it's a very relaxing, short listen, enjoyable though not too complicated as far as mysteries go. I definitely recommend it to the fans of the genre.

A cozy witch mystery.

When I first looked at this book, I thought (hoped) it might be different from the plethora of witch sleuths. It wasn’t too far off mark, actually too similar for a lasting impresion.
Level headed Kelly seems to be more air headed, as although she acts like a strong protagonist, more thoughts and questions run through her head than out her mouth.
Her brother’s character could use a new outline. His supposed millionaire status was from YouTube viewership and its advertising/sponsorship perks, yet he offers to buy Kelly a business and he wanted 3% profits, claiming he made his financial success based on investments.
River, his cameraman, is coerced to take Kelly out and Kelly has her G-string in a bunch because she doesn’t wanna be a notch. FFS, enjoy some company and keep your clothes on. Who are you to dissect a near stranger’s life choice?
So character build up was more like this winter’s melting down and shaky like an aftershock.
The mystery was interesting although “police academy” does not fully train one on investigation matters. Research is a crucual key for a solid, riveting book. Clues were nicely, if not chaoticly, trickled; but the murder mystery was not immediate, due to setting up the new surroundings.
I do think the author is capable of more and better, as the series/first book seems to be going in a forward direction than circles.
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator, and would give the second book a chance if she lands the job.

It’s pretty good

It’s harder to write A good cozy than a lot of people would think. To really qualify as a cozy, the author must tread a fine line between making the murder(s) too realistic I.e. too gory, and keeping the danger and suspense real enough to be believable. Emma Watts did a good job here. This a a good opening for a new series, the author even has halfway reasonable excuse for so many bad things continuing to happen in such a small town. The mysterious dark forces at work, at least gives the reader a reason for these things to keep happening in a small area with a limited number of people. As a general rule, I’m not too fond of the ploy that has the MC continuing to investigate after getting a warning from the police to stay out of the case, especially when the police in question don’t follow up on the threat, but the story mystery was good enough to forgive using it. I will certainly buy at least two more books in this series (it takes that many to give a new series a fair chance). By book three the author should have introduced most of the characters and also made the reader familiar enough with the setting that more attention can be paid to the mystery.

Confused. That's how I feel after reading this book. It all just felt so muddled. It didn't help that it was so poorly edited (if at all). There were so many errors; missing words, misspelled words, etc. The mystery wasn't bad but it was difficult to enjoy it with all the grammatical errors.

As far as the characters go, it was hard to get into them. The MC is so closed off that I wound up not caring about her. The brother is an idiot. There seems to be a hint of a love triangle (NO!). One guy is a Peter Pan type and a womanizer (pass). The other is a 40 year old who is barely around but seems interested? He also seems closed off.

Come to think of it, so is the Peter Pan boy. That seems to be the themed for the main characters of this book, emotionally closed off.

Then there is the old lady who is supposed to be "helping" the MC. She's your typical secret keeping elder. This sort of plot device doesn't make things more interesting and mysterious, it makes them annoying!

3-stars because the story wasn't bad and there was some effort given to the characters. However, the love triangle and all the errors forced me to lower the rating.

I won't be reading the next book in this series.

Also, seriously with the attempt at a cliff hanger?

This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened too but it won't be the last, in fact I have already download book two. I really enjoyed it because I liked the characters and all the secrets surrounding the main character's mother. The mystery was good with plenty of suspects and magic to help solve the murder.
Kelly moves in with her very rich brother after losing her job and divorcing her husband. But the little sleepy town is anything but sleepy and as Kelly is quickly learning it holds a past that is connected to her own mother. The town was cursed and with every murder that goes unsolved it brings the world closer to destruction. A fight that it seems Kelly's mum was apart of stopping and now with Kelly back in town the burden falls onto Kelly's shoulders. The problem is Kelly didn't know she was a witch and with Ivy, herself appointed mentor only dishing out information as she sees fit, Kelly has her work cut out for when she investigates her very first murder, the murder of a dive instructor.
I liked the narrator as she used different voices for each character making it a nice easy listen.

Kelly is going through divorce and with no place else to go she moves in to Haven California with her younger brother, the Youtube star. Thinking small town living would be great to get herself together and give her a fresh start. Instead she finds out she is a witch, and like her mother she is supposed to help solve crimes in the town.

For the most part I enjoyed the story. I just wish that the witch aspect was more centered on. I mean if I just fund out I was a witch I would be all over it trying to figure out what I could do with my gift. Instead Kelly was very blah say about it. This was a very short book and I am awaiting book 2 in the series to see if the witch aspect gets played on more.

Natalie Naudus narrates the story and has done a good job with it.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

I received audiobook version of this book for free from the narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

This was mostly a time-pass cozy mystery novella. The story is paced well and mostly flows smoothly. But the drawback of this book is that there's nothing extraordinary or anything that makes it memorable. Starting from the character, the plot, the "mystery", the "twists", everything is just alright and nothing grabbed my attention. It mostly follows a cozy mystery formula and chugging along that path. It's alright for a beach read where you just want to sit back and relax.

The narration by Natalie Naudus is alright too. I loved hearing her voice narrating this story and that possibly got it one extra star.

Love the set-up, not the plot

Good writing and editing, enjoyable characters, nice background planning for what is bound to be a series--with all this going to the good side, a careless, confusing non-plot presents no problem. I am amazed at the ability of an author to come up with one great set of characters and one spiffy new set of paradigms after another, and then to make a series out of the whole thing! Ms. Watts is particularly good at all this and I am always impressed and downright delighted. Thanks again! I await the next in the series, and from now on I think I will pay the small fee for them, too. It seems only fair when I have read so many of them.

I really liked the idea behind this book and the characters are a quirky and enjoyable bunch. Funny and with some mystery thrown in the story was very enjoyed to listen to.

The idea of finding out in your 30's that you're a witch and you come from a line of witches is a bit weird, you'd think there would be signs from childhood, perhaps future books will explain this.

Regardless I really enjoyed it and I definitely want the next book.

The narrator did a good job with the phrasing and then character voices.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Looking for a new witch mystery series

Don't know why, but I like the stories where the lead discovers she is a witch. This book has started on that track. Now that Kelly knows what she is and has solved her first mystery, it will be interesting to read as she continues to learn about her magic family background and gets to know the cast of characters in Haven. This story has as satisfying end, in that it solves the murder. But, it also whets the appetite for learning who the good and bad guys are in town.

Different series fun read

I'm not sure yet about this series. It's delightful and fast reading. I enjoy the author's other books but will reserve judgement until I read the next one. So far the characters are not truly defined as their places in the plots. I felt like I'm missing something but not sure what. I knew the answers too soon but felt rushed to the ending. The main character needs more developing but the story plot shows promise. Will update after the next book. It's still a fun read.

This was a fun read!

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It involves some paranormal, some murder mysteries, but it's not completely formula writing. The characters are fun, a little snarky, Ivy is just odd (that character is a typical formula) but the rest were entertaining. At least I thought so. I'm ready to try Book 2 in this series and see the characters become more fleshed out. So far, there believable and have caught my interest. Let's see if the can hold my interest in Book 2!!

I voluntarily give this honest and unbiased review in exchange for a free copy of this book. I really love how this book comes together and the cliff hanger, oh my! I was hooked right from the start. The author paired well with this narrator to bring this story to life. I loved the quirky nuisances throughout, the voices, the discovery of a special library, learning about family and best of all testing out the spells. This book is one of those cozy whodunit's with a trick confession. I cannot wait till the next book in this series is ready. I await with eager anticipation.

4 stars Story & Overall - 5 Stars Narrator: My review is based on the Audiobook. Haven Witches does a good job laying the groundwork for the series. We are introduced to the characters and the town and how it runs. Mixed within this introduction the mystery is unfolded. I really enjoyed the story overall. The narrator does a fantastic job of bringing the story to life with easy to understand and distinguishable character voices. I look forward to more from the Author and narrator.

Watts offers interesting characters and premise and a murder or two to solve. The book is well written and a generally fun romp into a new series that promises great things.

Fast, entertaining read.

Usually I read a few pages of a book to fall asleep. Rarely do they keep my attention long enough to read much at a time. However this book didn't last nearly long enough. While the characters could have been better developed, I did enjoy this cute whodunit and look forward to getting to know Haven's characters better. OK, off to read book 2.

Heaven to read Haven

I don't know if you're like me, that you're a voracious reader, but I find it hard sometimes to find good books to sink my teeth into. I didn't have a problem with this book! The characters are believable, the plot is great! I didn't figure out who the killer was in the first chapter! It's a great read!

Overall, if you want a quick kitschy mystery this is the book for you. The writer is a bit repetitive in their language, but overall the story is still enjoyable.

The general premise of a young woman who moves in with her brother in a town full of secrets and magic is enjoyable. However I got the impression that the magic mystery was developed as it went along.
