Raised on her father’s terrifyingly spellbinding fairy tales, Robin Weatherwax knows evil is a force of nature…
Even so, on a quest for a relationship with her mother—a botany professor—Robin puts aside her fear of nature to travel in the Russian taiga. The only remaining obstacles are the grad students taking up her mother’s attention.
But as the research team forays into the woods, a chilling voice whispers to Robin of a curse and a thirst for her blood. Robin will have to face the evil that calls to her or risk losing her chance at everything she’s ever longed for.
I won a free copy of this novella in a giveaway and was excited to read it because I love fairy tales and their histories. I found this story to be well-written grammatically, and overall it was an enjoyable read. It was fun to see all the references to existing fairy tales and tropes, and I liked the darker, spookier setting that Collins created.
However, pieces of this story felt rushed to me. Perhaps this is because it's a novella and not a full-length novel, and therefore there isn't enough time or text to delve deeper into certain details... but Robin's character development was a bit lacking in my opinion. Instead of the protagonist gradually changing over time and/or in a reasonable manner due to the events she experienced, I felt like for half the story she was one person, and then suddenly she was someone else. I understand dramatic events causing revelations or inspiring bravery and thus propelling characters to act in new ways... but I wish it had been a bit more nuanced with Robin.
Additionally, the ending was very predictable to me... but maybe it was supposed to be! After all, this novella is part of the very familiar realm of fairy tales. I wasn't disappointed in the ending necessarily - I just wish there had been a bit more to it!
Overall, Thorn and Thimble was fun and worth the read.
A brooding, at times dark, coming of age modern fairy tale with a tad flavor of Grimm. I found myself caught as though a thorny vine from this story had snagged onto my clothes, whispered "stay a moment" and proceeded to hold me captive until the tale's end.Thoroughly enjoyed.
I love the way fables can turn to reality. With magic in between. Really enjoyed the book. I loved the way the thorn and thimble are literally used in the story. Will read more from the author.
