When the rescued slaves were first brought on board my ship, I saw only the one. The one they called Arcana. And though I realized the others had all suffered similar fates - fearsome torture and erotic conditioning that had estranged them from whoever they had once been - I focused on the one who met my eyes with what could only be interpreted as a defiantly seductive lure, while the others held their gazes downward, at their feet, at the floor, at the past which had shaped them and undoubtedly doomed them to any sort of normal life.

Not so with Arcana. That one had no shame in whatever had happened to him. In that one blinding moment when we saw one another for the first time, I knew he was as brash as he was beautiful, and I knew without any doubt that he had chosen me - though for what dark agenda, I could not have said.

My heart went cold and silent in my chest. My throat was dry. My breathing faltered and I was forever changed.

***

We danced. Captain Mordecai and I. Not any traditional dance, but a dance of power. A battle of yin and yang, light and dark, pleasure and torment.

A dangerous dance of right and wrong in a single moment caught outside the tendrils of Time.

It was easy to see the raw and sensual power in that man's gaze. But also the fear. Fear of being seen for who he was behind his carefully-constructed masks. Fear of finally surrendering to the dangerous desires he clearly felt when he looked at me, knowing my past, knowing I had been enslaved by sadistic aliens. Knowing I had not only enjoyed it, but had come to love my master. All the wrong things. So very wrong.

That was when I knew he wanted me. That was when I knew I needed him.

That was when I knew I had him exactly where we both needed him to be.

Barely 3 stars...

That was... odd!

You know me, I'm a total fan of Master/slave or captor/captive or even rescuer/rescued stories but this one didn't convince me... :(

I'd categorise it as an "epistolary" novel as Arcana, the rescued Arlai slave, had been brutally robbed of his voice and communicated his horrific story in the form of reports written to the starship captain, Mordecai.

The "love story" so to speak was very weird, I didn't feel any chemistry between the MCs. And Mordecai's thoughts/feelings whilst reading those letters were rather disturbing for me.

The end felt rushed... We see one "real" scene between the MCs, and I mean real because it was one of the only few where Arcana and Mordecai actually met and did something together...
And then BOOM and we suddenly have the epilogue (?!)

There were almost no secondary characters, no plot, no world-building considering the inside of the ship or the book's universe (only some details about Arla, the alien planet, in Arcana's reports)... The whole story felt to me a bit "detached" from, well, everything actually.

The writing style saved my writing. I can't honestly tell you that it wasn't compelling and lyrical. It was well-written in terms of language and the quite peculiar lexis that was used, especially in Arcana's letters.

I have to think about picking up more books by this new to me Author...

Impressive read. I wasn't prepared and I really loved the way this was written!
Like a poem, beautiful woven sentences. Some reads give me a highly fluttering feelings and this one did.

Arcade freed by captain Mordecai and his crew, after seven years, from his captures. A pure, manipulating, hunger for commitment human being, who lost his humanity to the Arlai and his personal hostage and abusive keeper Blaek. He loved him because it was the only thing to do.

"They are the Great Devourers, the Arlai."

Arcade and the others who were freed were castrated and undone from their vocal cords.
On the spaceship Mordecai's medical crew can help them reverse, but all the young men have to recover and this takes time. All the men had their head down except Arcade... the beautiful breathtaking Arcade.

He can't voice what happened to him but through a tablet he can type his 'awful' experiences, only for Mordecai's eyes...
The reports of what happened are painful seducing, open and erotic. Mordecai has trouble to control his growing feelings.
He can't and won't give in, now can he?

Again...an impressive read, in a fantasy environment with amazing creatures. The reports were very well done. I enjoyed this read immensely! One tiny thing...I would have loved to see more of them when they started their relationship together...
Beautiful written story with a HEA <3
I want to recommend this one!!

Kindly received an arc from the author.

It seems like, lately I read some of books out of my comfort zone. There was a giddy feeling before I read this book.
Knowing that there's some rape, kidnapping, slavery, and all the dark side of the story, not to mention sci-fi and fantasy.
Not my preferences at all.

Captain Mordecai wanted Arcana from day one he safe Arcana. But Arcana's heart and soul still bound to Blaek, his captor for seven years since he's kidnapped at seventeen.
He suffered every torture but yet, he couldn't help himself to depend and loving the monster who took him in.

..."He groaned and drank of me for a long while that way. Everything I offered.
Then he bound my hands above my head and whipped me.
How I hated him.
How I loved him"

But then he met Captain Mordecai, and slowly wanted him, though he admitted to Modecai, he's still love and belonged to Blaek.
It's a mind game. I didn't love and impressed of the story, but I cannot hate this.
Written in what I called a silent conversation, this story placed on Mordecai ship where all the rescued slave given their therapy.
Arcana and Mordecai had their relationship through their conversation with the tablet (Arcana still didn't have his voice back at that time).
Near the ending, Mordecai finally told Arcana that he wanted him, as much as Arcana wanted Mordecai.
They have their happy ending, with Arcana's voice back, and finally leave his past behind and start a true living with Mordecai.

If you like this kind of book. you'll probably like this one!

Slavery is a very touchy subject and it's difficult to write about. I'm anxious to pick up books on that theme when they are in the Romance genre, because they sometimes misrepresent it in order to tell a love story between a master and a slave, or, like in this case, between a person and an ex-slave. However, while there were a few things in Prey that made me a bit uncomfortable, my overall impression was that the relationship between the master/owner and Arcana wasn't too romanticised.

Yes, Arcana admits to having feelings for the alien who bought him after Arcana was abducted, but he realizes that those feelings were programmed in him through the training and punishments that the humans went through after they were taken. He also says that he got lucky with his owner and that the other humans might not have had anything close to his experience.

He seems aware of how much he's changed, what he has turned into and how he could use that to his advantage. That adaptability is something that impressed me.

As for his relationship with Mordecai Paronne - the human Captain of the starship Prince Fair, well... Mordecai likes to be in control. He runs his ship efficiently and they are the first to successfully rescue enslaved humans from the Arlai (aliens). Yet, you can see him unravel and get in a way addicted to Arcana, and you while you read, you can't help but wonder if Arcana not only realizes his effect on his savior, but actually turns the tables on the Captain and is the one who is truly in control.

Mordecai asks Arcana to write him reports on what he's been through and the ex-slave does so in the form of very detailed, very explicit letters to the Captain. I found them quite engaging because they not only showed the psychological changes in Arcana, but also introduced us to the alien race. However, I must caution you that these letters might trigger some of you as they talk about abduction, slavery, abuse and violation.

I'd recommend Prey to those who don't want a cutesy romance and are not easily putt of by abuse and slavery.

First, this is a very different read from other romances. And second, the author handles the contentious subject matter with the utmost respect and care. This is the second book I’ve read by her, and I real enjoy her work.

Arcana is abducted by the Arlai, a race of beings who “devour” people and use them for their own sexual pleasure. The other hero, Mordecai, is almost abducted by the Arlai as a teenager but escapes the fate that awaits Arcana years later.

Mordecai, now captain of the ship that rescues Arcana, is drawn to Arcana’s spirit and beauty upon seeing him for the first time. While Arcana, after being a slave for so long, is drawn to Mordecai’s power. Not the power of being a captain for a spaceship, but the inner-strength Mordecai possesses.

Just like her other book The Slave Palace (you can read my review here), Ms. Rathbone’s story parallels BDSM. Arcana is the sub and Mordecai is the dom. And Mordecai is not only drawn to Arcana when he’s first rescued, but is sucked deeper into Arcana’s web through letters Arcana sends to Mordecai, heavily detailing his abduction, captivity, and even his seduction by the Arlai.

The letters are a different twist on most books I’ve read. The world building in them is spot on. I could visualise Arlai. The author also expresses a great amount of emotion through Arcana in the letters. These letters disturb Mordecai and also arouse him.

Dark themes were delved in a deep, personal, painful level, transformed into a complex ambiguity by Arcana’s own transformation as he’s assimilated into an alien culture which savors his anguish and fear. Rescued and returned to humanity, he is isolated by the changes he’s undergone, even from the human captain who wishes to help him, yet finds him entirely too tempting. Where does damage end and desire begin? Arcana and Mordecai both struggle with this question as Mordecai tries to take advantage of the temptation which is Arcana. Arcana, however, has a void he yearns to fill and is more than happy to tempt. It’s a labyrith of pitfalls and danger which may be easier to navigate in darkness toward each other.

This relationship was exquisitely and honestly depicted through the two men’s narratives, climaxing in one of the most erotic love scenes I’ve ever read in a novel, guiding them toward an ending which feels like a new beginning. As difficult and disturbing as the journey might have been, it was uplifting seeing where Arcana and Mordecai got to.

🚀💜🔥Can Mordecai help a tormented former slave reach for a new life and free himself in the process?

👍🚀🌌👾Really fascinating and different tale of Starship Captain Mordecai's fascination for rescued human slave Arcana. Although the story is told from Mordecai's point of view, Arcana's comes through in extensive letters he writes to document his feelings and experiences over eight years as a conditioned slave. Yes, his experiences are violent, often degrading and physically damaging, but his ability to survive and transition to life after slavery through his interactions with Mordecai is inspiring, in a way. And the revelation that the cool and collected starship captain has his own issues to work through adds to their relationship as it develops. This story kept my interest beginning to satisfying end. :-)

The depth of feeling in this book was simply extraordinary. This was not easy subject matter to broach, but the author managed it beautifully. Abduction, captivity, rape, torture, and mental conditioning are not subjects often spoken about and even less understood. Reliving Arcana’s journey and learning to understand his feelings about not only enduring his captivity, but truly surviving it was absolutely all encompassing. His and Mordecai’s love story is not simple. It is nuanced and difficult, yet totally pure. This book was inspirational and insightful, impassioned and intriguing, compelling and enthralling, and absolutely riveting. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

3.5 rounded up

I really liked Arcane's letters/reports. His time with the Arlai was emotional, and the author did a good job describing how conflicted Arcane was with his captors due to his awareness of the stockholm syndrome like programming the Arlai used to train the humans. The writing style was pretty unique but fit Arcane well.

I found the captain to be a bit odd. He was pretty distraught at "almost being a victim" and when he reveals the story behind that, it wasn't as bad as he made it seem.

I really wish we got more of Arcane/Mordecai's relationship together. I would have given this another star if the ending didn't feel so rushed; I'm a sucker for after trauma healing and returning to normalcy scenes.

What a pleasant surprise

It was a fantastic read with complex characters and wonderful dialog with the Arlai Aliens being like Incubi in terms of feeding off emotions of the slaves they capture and using pleasure/pain to train their submissive in what is known as the Punishment Room. Enter Mordecai who always wondered why he wasn't captured and taken and why he has not had a successful relationship.. until Arcana who refused to be looked at as a victim rather as a man who knew what he was and what he needed.. the inner strength that all subs have and knowing exactly what he wanted/needed.

A very different story to anything I've ever read before. It is very well written and developed but it is not for everyone. Please read the warnings, there are vivid descriptions of torture and sexual assault of one of the main characters, Arcana, from when he was kidnapped. Mordecai is fascinated by Arcana and cannot believe how strong Arcana is after everything he has been through. Mordecai and Arcana are drawn to each other from the moment they meet but can they be what the other needs.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

A space captain rescues nine human boys who were kidnapped into sexual slavery by aliens. The oldest and least visibly defeated boy, now 25, writes a series of letters to the captain detailing his experience. The boy, who admits Stockholm Syndrome, transfers his sexual attention from his former captor to the captain. He wants his words and actions to please the most powerful man in his new reality. His words have the intended affect, drawing the captain into his spell.

Would have liked to have seen more of the aftermath after the boy completed his story.

More than I expected

Mordecai is the captain of a rescue ship that has just rescued the first humans from an alien planet intent on kidnapping humans for their pleasure. One of the humans, Arcana, immediately catches the captain’s eye and you are taken on a journey of self examination and discovery. The suffering of the human captives is terrifying to read and their resilience is admirable. This story makes you realize how strong and adaptable the human mind can be.

This book is good, right up to the end, when it goes flat.
It feels like the author just hurried up and finished it, rather than taking the time to finish well. It needs several more chapters, them working through things together. Not just "we're together, now it's happily ever after." Extremely disappointed about that (the ending). The rest is good though, assuming you are into that sort of thing.

I don’t think this book was for me. It wasn’t bad but I don’t think this type of sci-fi with alien rape scenes was something I enjoyed. I’m glad I gave it a try. I enjoyed the characters and how it was written. But I struggled to get into the book and I had to keep forcing myself to pick it up and continue to read it.

This is a survivor's story -
Arcana's
After being "rescued" - this is a very subjective phrase by the way, and after reading I understand why.
I do not believe I have ever read a story with quite the direction ,or maybe intent is a better word , such as Rathbone has crafted with Prey.
Arcana retells his tale to the captain though for me it was more of an emotional journey - the whys
We also get an insight into the captain's psyche
I found this a unique read. Not a lot of action and at times slightly graphic
