What Skylar Needs: The Stillman Family Series

Rate this book
They say music brings people together... Not for Skylar Stillman and Melanie Nova. Melanie and her best friends were having a girls night at her new apartment when her sexy, brooding neighbor showed up. Not only did he say they were too loud, but he insulted their music choice. Obnoxious pop music-...How rude? The half-pint woman with curly locks, brown skin, and endless curves wasn’t what Skylar expected to see on the other side of the door. The last thing he needed was another woman in his life. Steering clear of each other seemed like the best option. Mishaps kept throwing the two together. So when Skylar needed a date for his sister’s wedding to ward off his family friend, and latest fling, he knew just the person for the job. What Skylar Needs is a BWWM, BBW, enemies to lovers romance.

Cute book, them getting together was getting so obvious but for some reason still felt so rushed. 3rd act break up that was actually needed because his ex girlfriend was getting on my last nerve. Giving it 3.5 stars but rounding to four for goodreads.

Good Storyline/Poor Writing

I really enjoyed the story in this book, but where it fell short was the writing, typos, syntax and more. If you told me this was the author’s first book, I would believe you. I almost DNFed this book, but wanted to see what else happened in the story. The story was good.

Good beginning

This started off really good. The banter between them and the build up to Skylar realizing his feelings was really enjoyable but after that it falls kind of flat. It went from feeling like a cute and sweet romcom with fun dialogue to a description of events that had to happen to get us to the end.

I enjoyed elements of the story but the execution wasn’t great. I didn’t like how the POV would change within a paragraph. Didn’t like how Skylar was written, it seemed she had better chemistry with his brother. I think with some editing better character development this could’ve been a solid romance.

The plot had potential but the writing was very elementary. There was no depth to the characters, no attention to detail in any capacity. I didn’t finish because I really didn’t care even though it was a quick read. I feel like I wrote better than this in middle school.

Refreshing... Relatable!!!

This was such a nice, cute, refreshing, feel good story and perfect for a lazy beautiful Sunday, at the park, the beach or at home in front of the fireplace...
This is my first time reading this author and this was a beautiful story because it was so down to earth and very every day life for all... It's as if it could easily be one of anyone's story... Very relatable... Grab it and you will be smiling all throughout the end..l

This had the potential to be cute but fell really flat. In the middle of a chapter it would skip to another character’s pov for one paragraph and then go back without any warning. The writing was not great. The dialogue was very immature. Idk. I wanted to like it but it just wasn’t good.

Hallmark could never!!

Hallmark could never have pulled off such a truly heartwarming story! The romance and shenanigans felt so believable and were filled with so much heart. I loved how each character had space to grow and were fleshed out in a way that made sense to the reader.
I also love, that for a change, the fmc did not have to have a “traumatic” back story in order to “qualify “ for her happy ending!
I appreciate an author who can create relatable Black female characters that are authentic and actually representative of everyday women who aren’t the annoyingly stereotypical, traumatized caricatures of Black women! Because I’m really sick and tired of Black authors using those sickening anti-black and yt supremacist nonsense! It’s lazy writing and really harmful. I get that it’s fiction, but fiction is rooted in reality as well and definitely makes an impact. So for any other Black women reading multicultural romance genres, please mindful of what kind of “works” you allow into your mental space, especially at this point in history! Again, kudos to the author for providing a wonderful romantic escape for Black women everywhere.

Friendly Sky

Skylar and Melanie meet when she moves in the apartment over his. She and her friends are noisy and Skylar goes to tell her off. Off to a bad start, Skylar acts like friend....but a grumpy one. He takes her to work when her car dies and is always showing up to hang out.
They bicker but really like each other. I loved the evolution of their tart friendship. Skylar has baggage in the form of a nasty former
acquaintance with benefits who won’t go quietly and Melanie has insecurities. He has never had a REAL relationship and almost doesn’t recognize his feelings. I REALLY enjoyed this book and their families and friends struck just the right note. This is an oldish book and I see only one other offerings by this author. I truly hope she is just taking her time releasing the next books🙏.

This story was a pleasant surprise.

If you love a cute sweet love story that has just a little bit of spice in it, delve into Melanie and Skylar’s adventures. This isn’t typically the sub genre of IR romance that I would spend hours reading because I get bored easily. With that being said, I was amazed at the clean simplicity of this work. It wasn’t bursting at the seams with overly flowery words utilized as a tool by so many writers to fill up a page.

This story was written in such a way that it was easy to follow and relatable. I could see this story actually taking place for people I know or have met as if it happened in real life.

I truly enjoy stories when it feels real even though I know it is fiction.

A sweet romance

Two polar opposites meet as neighbors and end up falling in love. Skylar is a successful uptight businessman who loves his family. He's also a horndog for women, then he meets his new neighbor Melanie. They clash immediately over a noise complaint and end up becoming friends. Melanie finds Skylar annoying, and Skylar thinks Melanie is too sweet. Mel and Sky are cute together as a couple. It's a relaxing, sweet romance with a little melodrama from an ex-girlfriend.

This was fun!!!

This story had me engaged and laughing from start to finish. A wonderful opposites attract adventure full of relatable endearing characters. I loved that there wasn't an immediate jump to sex like too many in this genre.
Candaces' comeuppance was perfect and had me choking on laughter. I had borrowed this book through Kindle originally but I will purchase it as it's a keeper. 😆

Sweet!!!

This is my kind of romance. Great job Ms Lane!!! Skylar was adorable and I like the fact that he was so irritated because of the music coming from her apartment but almost forgot his anger when he saw her. Melanie was a sweetheart. If you are reading this review believe me you won't be disappointed if you buy this book. Romance without all the descriptive sex every other page. The relationship grew beautifully and realistically. Again great job.

A fun light read

I was worried this would be a lot like The Wedding Date, which has a very similar plot, but it was different enough to keep me engaged. The snarky banter got a bit old, but the characters were still likable enough. There could have been more passion, but I do enjoy a slow burn... I was hoping for more of a pay off though. Overall, it was an enjoyable book , but more of a 3.5 than a 4.

Rom Com meet cute

I was drawn to this book because I saw the author's second book on tik tok. I'm glad I took decided to start here first. This cute slow burn fiction read had funny and relatable characters that I had a great time reading about. It may not be spicy but it has enough of a little heat for me to enjoy. After this story, I'm excited to read the next book in the series and many more works by the author.

all the feels

This one gave all the feels . From laughing to swooning … every review has giving this book 5 stars and I would give it more if I could . This one was a true romance that spoke to the true romantic in me . It’s been a while since I read a romance that wasn’t insta love but a slow burn that turned into a huge flame. I loved how Skylar came to realize Mel was the one for him and actually proved it to her . I can’t wait to read in the series .

I’m giving this book 3 stars, not because it’s bad BUT it could definitely be more if the author wanted it to be. Everything was great overall and this was a fun read but the writing was a bit basic for me, and no not because the author didn’t use long ass words or whatever but I simply wish there was more. I felt like I was reading more of a script/dialogue than a book but other than that I enjoyed the book 😜🎉😁🙏🏾

Super cute!

This was a super cute little fast read! This book been in my kindle for almost a year and I been over looking it because of the cover! It was suoer cute! I loved the banter back and forth between the 2 it made it worth reading!! Loved it more that it wasn't all that spicy sometimes you need a break from that! The build to leading to it finally happening was amazing! Very well placed! Loved every second of reading sky and Mel falling in love!

All the cute feels

This is my first read by this author and I'm so in love with Melanie and Skylar! The angst filled beginning of their relationship was comical. Before playboy Skylar knew it, he'd fallen for Melanie. My only draw back was there was not enough of a description of the characters, especially the main two. Overall a good read

Alright, but...

Don’t expect a lot of depth with this book. It was sweet, don’t get me wrong, but it was definitely a bit shallow. The two leads don’t really go through anything. I feel like this book would have been perfect with about 150 pages of more storyline.

But who am I judge? You read it and tell me what you think.

Sky and Mel💕💕💕

Great, sweet, funny, relatable are all adjectives you can use in describing this book. A twist on the enemies to lovers trope with lots of comedic interludes. Love both H/H neither were over the top with flaws or strengths——>regular folks in other words. Take time out to read this one!

I couldn't put it down...

I am so sick of billionaire playboys. This was a great read with young, successful, professionals. The couple was quirky and cute... No love at first sight, even though they acknowledged the attractiveness of each other. I plan on reading more of Ms. Lane!

Simply hilarious

I could not get enough of Melanie and Skylar. The story line was hilarious. Everything flowed so well. I hope there's a book coming up for Brendan. If so, his girl has to be able push his buttons. Great read.
