That means taking almost any job that comes his way, no matter the situation. So long as he can keep his ship floating, he's free to live the life he wants.
But that all changes when he meets Abigail Pryar, a nun looking for safe passage out of the system.
Too bad there's something off about the cargo she's carrying.
Jace knows he shouldn't ask too many questions, but when odd sounds start coming from inside the large, metal box, he can't help but check it out.
Big mistake.
The Renegade Star boxset includes the first three books in the series.
Jace Hughes is a hired gun, known to steal, loot, smuggle and even kill if the price is right; a true Renegade in the galactic system. In debt for a hundred thousand credits and only two weeks left to pay, he's in deep. A job escorting a nun carrying food and medicine off the planet, sounds like easy money. But the moment he meets Abigail Pryor, he knows she’s lying about the cargo she’s carrying. The discovery of the true cargo is extremely dangerous, but provides a payout that could be worth it – if he survives. Between the Union ships and the marauding ravagers after him, and the cargo he’s carrying, there’s a very good chance he won’t. A rip-roaring adventure that’s a cross between space opera and space adventure, THE RENEGADE STAR SERIES: Box Set, is smartly plotted with cunning twists and turns. As the story continues, the layers of mystery within the storyline begin to be peeled back to reveal shocking answers as each puzzle piece is expertly clicked into place. The characters are fantastic, producing a pitch perfect ensemble. While every bit the action-packed adventure that’s expected in this genre, this offers so much more on a whole new level. A definite hit not to be missed by lover’s of FIREFLY and BASTLESTAR GALACTICA!
LOVE this series!! I have never been in to space opera, I mean, I like Star Wars as much as the next guy, but it's not really my genre, ya know? But this series hooked me right from the first page, and had me flying through the books, leaving me anxious and excited for the next one! Great great story line, and it seems to get deeper and more intense all the time. Absolutely amazing characters! All of them are fantastic. Even the bad guys are annoyingly likeable, in all their evilness. Snarky and sarcastic characters that truly makes me love them and almost wish I was with them, if the thought of being in space didn't scare the hell out of me that is. An all around fantastic, action packed story, full of heart and endearing characters. Can't wait to see what happens next!
Three books in one collection. It all starts with Jace Hughes, a down and out renegade pilot taking on a job to transport a nun, of an obscure religion, with a box. He needs the money to pay off a dishonest loan shark. But things go wrong when he demands to know what’s in the box. From that point on, he can’t turn around without people shooting at him. The nun, Abigail, is far more than she seems too. I would have liked to know more of her background and what shaped her character. That’s a problem with this series; we slowly get to know Jace through flashbacks, but the other characters are not well enough fleshed out. The editing and proofreading are somewhat poor too.but, on the whole, this is a good space opera with our futuristic descendants trying to find earth (which Jace has always considered to be a fairytale) while being pursued by the two largest government in their region of space. I’d recommend it for all ages who like adventurous, non stop action science fiction with a sardonic humour.
JN Chaney's first Renegade Star series omnibus is a high octane dose of science fiction action and excitement. I originally stumbled upon Mr. Chaney's series with the initial volume, Renegade Star. I immediately found favorable comparison to some of my most favorite sci-fi TV and movie series. It had the adventure and humour of the Stargate series', a touch of the series, Dark Matter and the character ensemble of a Trek series. But Renegade Star is its own animal. It takes familiar tropes and puts them together with its own unique vision. Thankfully Mr. Chaney is a prolific author who has crafted an ever expansive universe exploring further tales of the Renegade Star crew and delving deeper within the Renegade universe itself. For me, I am very thankful that I discovered the work of JN Chaney . I look forward to spending much more time in his various universes.
Chaney has thought up an exciting and interesting world that I'm always eager to explore. I like the characters, especially Sigmond. I like the premise. I like the non-stop action. I've almost gone back to reading other novels, but then I wonder what other hijinks Jace and his crew can get into next.
I can't give it five stars, though. The series would totally benefit from further editing (I'm sorry!). Some of the wording and metaphors are a little clunky. The dialogue has unintentionally caused me to lol at a couple points. That definitely gets better later on in the series when the author hits his stride, but it is kind of jarring sometimes (I'm sorry!).
All in all, I'll continue to read the novels, good job!
I do not buy books shorter than 300 pages. So when a box set of short serials comes available at a reasonable price, I buy it. 'The Renegade Star Series' is typical for genre, full of action and improbable escapes. It is far better than average in polish, and editing. The biggest flaw is that all speakers use the same cocky sarcasm. All use the same voice with exception of the little girl voice used by a seven year old child that is more fitting for a four year old. Not bad but could be much better.
Move over Star Wars renegade star is here what a fantastic trilogy this story is film worthy they are the only books with a life like story no chopping and changing direction a fantastically unique experience i recommend these books to anyone who loves this kind of adventure novels
I was reminded of firefly when reading this in the captain’s devotion to his crew and especially the young girl he doesn’t want to see harmed. Also in his seeming uncaring what jobs he gets as long as he can keep flying and stay away from the union which he can’t do with his current cargo and crew. Great read for sci-fi lovers and browncoats;).
I’ve enjoyed the story so far. It seems to be a bit far fetched at times but it is sci-fi. The only thing that really bugs me is Jace’s cursing. Don’t get me wrong. I’m definitely not a prude and have used foul language a lot in my life, but in this series it’s a little over the top.
Favorite of the first 3 it was really good now they have a capital moon sized ship and are able to fight back !
The series starts out good and gets better. So far this is my favorite I love that they give tattoos out and have a capital ship to fight and flee with now I see why this series is the crown jewel !
Fast paced, witty without being obnoxious. This book is reminiscent of firefly. I found the story compelling, with enough new elements to keep it interesting
Very fast paced books. Wanted to drop other things to keep reading. 4 more books in series ( so far ), so I'll be reading for a while. Definitely recommend this series.
Fun romp about a rouge with some standards (a few). Well produced, fun story, well paced. The bad guys can’t hit the side a mod a barn, but then I guess you can’t kill off your heroes.
Very fast paced and engaging, but a bit light on emotional development. If you enjoy space opera and Han Solo (the Harrison Ford version) this should satisfy.
If you want to knock off and repackage Firefly, fine ... but at least do a halfway decent job of it; at least something better than this insipid dreck. Way too many cliches and really not even enjoyable as brain-candy.
