Claws and Effect

Rate this book
Rhett Lundthal’s job to make sure shifter-human relations are running smoothly in his small town. But he’s having trouble keeping the peace now that a prank has turned his life upside down.

Someone has put his picture up on an online dating app without his permission. Now, even though he isn’t looking for a mate, human women are turning up left and right for dates. Things get even more complicated when one of the women is attacked by an out of control shifter coming to meet him.

Joseline Herza is over the moon when she matches with a tall, dark, and handsome as hell shifter on a dating app. She’d always wanted to go on a date with a shifter and now her dream is coming true. But instead of a night of fun, she’s almost killed by a shifter on her way to her date.

Some of the town shifters are nervous after the attack. If word gets out that a human was almost killed by one of them, it would be disastrous for the town. When her life is threatened, Rhett steps in to protect Joseline.

As he tries to keep Joseline from danger, the town’s shifter-human relations aren’t the only one Rhett has to worry about. Now that it’s met her, his animal won’t be letting go of the beautiful human without a fight. Rhett is going to have to make an impossible choice. Which is more important, the safety of his entire town or the beautiful human he’s falling in love with?

GREAT START TO A NEW SERIES!!!
Title: Claws and Effect
Series: Small Town Shifters
Author: Lola Kidd
Designation: Book One of Series, Standalone, Novella, No Cliffhanger, HEA #paranormalromance
Reading Platform: Kindle Edition
My Rating: Three Hopeful Stars***
I've been a diehard Lola Kidd for years and always enjoy her work, but this book was probably my least favorite of all her stories. Don't get me wrong, I loved the premise, title, and cover but not the execution. The narrative was written with dual his and her third-person perspectives, which is one of my favorite styles for paranormal romance, but the flow of the story felt off. The dialogue seemed a little forced and unnatural. Also, I wasn't able to connect with either of the protagonists and didn't feel any chemistry between them until the last few chapters. I didn't particularly like either of the protagonists, at least not at first. Rhett Lundthall is a mythical shifter and the Head Keeper for the Lake Magnolia community. He's kinda like the shifter sheriff and the person responsible for handling shifter/human relations in his community. Joseline Herza is a professional organizer who specializes in helping to clear clutter from people's lives and create order, either for businesses or homes. Rhett and Joseline did eventually grow on me, but I just didn't feel any explosive chemistry between them. Throughout 95% of the book, Rhett was a grumpy, unfriendly, introverted, hard-to-get-along-with fuddy-duddy and not very romantic at all. He was just a 'Debbie Downer' who ran hot and cold all the time! lol... And Joseline - I don't even know what to say about her. She was all over the place with her emotions and came off as somewhat of a fickle, wishy-washy, promiscuous airhead. I felt there was so much missing from this story, and I'm not just talking about the mysterious ailment afflicting some of the shifters, causing them to attack humans. I'm referring to the lack of character development, growth, and personal details. For instance, did either Rhett or Joseline have family and where were they? Why was Joseline immune to shifter magic? The primary conflict in this story appeared to be a personal dilemma preventing Rhett from having a relationship with Joseline but was not well defined. When it was finally disclosed, there was very little discussion and somewhat of a letdown. We do discover that Rhett is a much older mythical shifter and had not had a relationship for a hundred years, but if he was so old and did not age naturally, how could he even consider mating a human? Is there something that would increase Joseline's lifespan thereby allowing her to live longer after she matted Rhett? I've read how mating bites can extend the life of humans, but it's never talked about in this story. If I were in Joseline's place and knew my sweetie was hundreds of years older than me, I'd be curious about this little detail. Apparently, each book will feature a different couple, but there appears to be an underlying interconnected plot thread which will be resolved as the series progresses. Some of my questions may be answered in a future book and with that thought in mind, the jury's still out on subsequent releases in the series.

So, did I like this book? I waited two weeks before writing this review, simply because I was so troubled by what to say. This is not Kidd's best work but I've been a fan for years, and that won't change because of how I feel about one story. I did like it, but I didn't love it. Was there anything I didn't like? There were some things I felt were missing, but I'm not a professional reviewer nor writer, so who am I to judge? There were quite a few typos and errors which could have been eliminated by a simple proofread, but none serious enough to distract me from the story. Would I recommend it? Again, I love Kidd's work and have for years. I'd say, if you enjoy imaginative paranormal romance with unique shifters and creative storylines, give this one a whirl, especially since it's the first book of a new series and sets up the world and premise. This review is nothing more than my humble opinion, so please don't shoot the messenger. I'm simply trying to be honest. Will I read this author again? You bet! Just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally, was I entertained? Absolutely!

Wow, I felt like I read a rough draft instead of a book. The book desperately needs a content editor & proof-reader (Both -DEPERATELY!). For some reason, I didn't quit the book like I normally would a book that I wasn't into or felt was bad for whatever reasoning, it was definitely like driving by the scene of an accident though, I couldn't stop looking. This was bad enough, it didn't even deserve the 2 stars I normally give books that I didn't enjoy but at least finished. I usually only rate books I don't finish as 1 star. The flow is choppy, the characters are flat, and there is entirely too much inner dialogue for the main characters. The plot is erratic and full of holes, and even the ending doesn't solve the mystery of the story.

Also, if the shifter is a Saber Tooth Tiger (which is NOT described to look like a regular Tiger, as quoted directly from the book- "It was big and brown. It had some dark brown spots on its coat and long fur around its mouth. It sort of looked like a big cat, but it had giant fangs coming out of its mouth."), do NOT use a regular Tiger with elongated teeth for the cover art. I absolutely hate misleading cover art, it's a pet peeve of mine. I thought it was just a funky Tiger pic, assumed it was a Tiger shifter story -though it didn't say in the blurb about the book. Surprise! It's not! Definitely won't be continuing with the series, probably won't read more from this author either. I also wish I could get my reading time back.

I was determined to finish this book, but it was kind of boring. The characters had no depth, and the mystery was never solved. For me, it won't be, as I won't continue this series.

⚡I loved this book, it tell you everything s
happens for a reason. We get an inside view how these shifter towns work. Definitely a Must Read!
⚡Joseline Herza is a human working out of her own house as a Organizer, everything has to be organized. People pay her to organize their business or home. Being on vacation Joseline decided she wanted one night of Crazy, Wild, Passionate Sex. Checking out an app for Speed Mating Joseline went thru each possibility. She found one and text him. Ooo his reply was hot, "If your dripping with curiosity, I for one am dying to meet you." WOW he was a smooth talker. Joseline got ready putting a trench coat on covering her body and left for her night of fun. Then her brand new car get totaled by a shifter, Joseline has to run.
⚡Rhett Lundthal’s (Wildcard) is a Saber Tooth Tiger he is also the town's Keeper (Sheriff) of his territory Lake Magnolia. His life has been having a lot of twists and turns lately because of many kids starting a "Prank War" from Pizza Deliveries to Dating app for a Mate. He had women knocking a his door at all hours and making sences. While taking care of a shifter gone wild, Rhett meets the most beautiful woman he's ever seen in his very long life. Now he need to make a decision what is important, the safety of his entire town or the beautiful human?

Total waste of time!!!

This book was awful I don't know how the author could even consider this romance! There was nothing between Rhett and Joseline she was drawn to him for a booty call on a booty call shifter app and when she got to his part of town she was attacked by a scorpion shifter. Rhett felt like his tiger was drawn to her so he brought her back to his place once they figured out they couldn't erase her memory so that made her a threat and Rhett wanted to keep her safe. So anyways after I got over halfway through the book Rhett and Joseline had one minor make out session where he went downtown on her and after that it was on and on boring crap to the point I started skimming. Well I caught bits and pieces something about Rhett keeping a big secret from her and it turned out he used to erase human memories if they ever saw a shifter and one time it turned out badly where a man killed his whole family after his memory was altered and Rhett blamed himself for the whole thing. When Rhett told her about this she thought he used her for sex and when I read that I'm thinking what the crap when did they even move that far on I never once read anything other then the little make out session. Anyways I kept on going to see if there was going to be any thing at all and they ended up getting engaged moved in with him and never once did we read about them consumating their relationship. I don't even see how this book could even be considered Romance there wasn't one ounce of Romance in this entire book it was a total waste of time I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK

This is an OK shifter romance, but I did have a few issues with it. It gets 3 stars from me.

My main issue with this book is that it is simply too short to have enough character development. It is really more of a short story, not even quite what I would call a novella.

The terrible editing bothered me a great deal -- there were so many errors, and they were very distracting. I also found it difficult to believe Joseline fell in love with Rhett so quickly. She was a human, after all, so she wouldn't have felt the mate insta-love that he did.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Joseline answered a hook-up only with a shifter dating app. He was gorgeous and she didn't plan to feel anything for guys anymore. She'd been through enough of that. When she went to meet him, dressed for the “date”, she had a near-death experience with a wild exotic shifter. She was saved by another even more exotic shifter who turned out to be her guy for the night. Only Rhett didn't place the ad. The prank had been driving him crazy with a flood of human women coming after him.
Strangely, he didn't feel that way about her. She needed protection and he was going to do the protecting.
How are they going to deal when he tells her it was all a prank? What is it about this woman that's so different?
There is an attraction for sure. Will his secrets keep them from finding their true feelings? What about the mystery creating the danger for her? Will the Keepers (shifter enforcement) be able to solve it? If they do will she leave him?
The characters are good. The shifters unique. The mystery never solved so it is probably going to be an underlying theme in the series (yea). There's a little steam and a romance you'll want to succeed.
I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.

Decent story but too many errors!

I'm a fan of Lola Kidd, so I am upset that I have to write the review this way. It started out okay, a few typos here and there. At the beginning I found the story interesting, and with unique shifters I was looking forward to where it led. But the story wasn't really going anywhere, it would seem an action scene was coming up then no...not this time. The characters were okay but we learned nothing about them! No back story is given. It's hard for me to get into a book if I know nothing about the characters, if I don't like, or dislike them, I really don't care what happens to them. Then the typos and other errors increased. I got to a chapter where, when I reported an error, I actually also asked if the proofreader had quit during the previous chapter! It was terrible, and I almost stopped reading there. But I hate giving up and continued, and the errors slowed again. Honestly, when I got to the end I wished that I'd stopped back then. Why? Because nothing else happened! Oh, he got the puppy. That could very well spoil the end for you, because nothing happens. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Not Extinct....

Rhett is very annoyed at the dragon teenagers that have made a profile for him on a dating app....He's got hordes of horny women knocking on his door and he doesn't want any of them hasn't wanted one in hundreds of years! But when he takes one look at the beautiful human being attacked in his territory, his saber tooth tiger wakes up like he's never done before. Problem is Rhett is afraid that his new found mate won't accept him if she discovers his secret, so he decides to keep another.

Joseline Herza has friends that are shifter, but she has never been a mate to one they always have a fun night and take off, so she decides to try her hand at a one night stand herself and there's a new dating app that caters to just that. What she doesn't realize is that the shifter who catches her eye on the app and sets up a date with her doesn't even know what's going on.

Will Joseline catch the tiger by the tail, or will Rhett forever hold his peace?

This is such a cute story about a make shifter, sabertooth, and a human female.
Rhett is being punked by some teenage dragon shifters who out his name and info up on a dating site. Joseline is looking through and comes across his info and converses with him. Then after a couple of texts, she heads to the town he loved in. On the way, her car is attached by a scorpion shifter. And the adventure of her life behind! Spoiler: Rhett can be slower than molasses!!
Great story and perfect characters!!

Rom-shif-com

What do you call a story that has romance, comedy and shifters? I believe that would be a rom-shif-com.
This story has all the elements for all three groups.
While I did enjoy the story, I am left with the wanting more. There is a mystery in the storyline that is not solved, in fact, it is barely (no bears) started. I want more deets!!!
Nice short read, but left a lot of questions for me. Since I did like the story, I’m not taking away any stars for leaving me hanging. Guess I just have to read the next book!

Shifter myths are real.

A great standalone shifter romance that has a mystery running through the series. Phoenix, Pegasus, dragons and saber tooth tiger are just some of the characters in this story and series. On line dating and on line hook ups are used. Teenagers pulling unfunny pranks are also apart of the story. I didn't put it down once I started to read. Going to start on the next book in the series.

Awesome book, with fantastic characters! In the middle of a dangerous and tense situation, his tiger realized that she was his mate. Fighting to save her and control his animal is a nightmare! He had given up on ever finding his true mate, so to have her suddenly appear is confusing! Not wanting to pressure her (while protecting her,) he sends out mixed signals! What’s a girl to do, run home and hide?

Fun, Fun, Fun!

I loved this little story about the Saber Tooth Tiger Shifter, Rhett and his mate human mate. There is just something extremely sexy about a man named Rhett. The characters are likable and the town full of mythical shifters sounded as interesting as the story premise. I look forward to finding out the mystery that causes the shifters to go feral. New author equals new fan!.

Rhett is very frustrating

I really wanted to smack Rhett. He made no sense. Keep putting everything off until the next day or the perfect time. I just wanted to smack him or kick him in the rear and tell him enough already spit it all out. Still a lot of unanswered questions about the accident and what is really going on. I like the variety of shifters in the book. How scary would a giant scorpion be yikes.

A shifter romance with a twist - a town till of shifters!

Think of s town of unique shifter (variety of species) and humans not really aware they exist until they are known, if humans endanger shifters have magic to wipe their memories. Rhett has not rated but a prank puts rhett on a case and Josephine reaches his heart and the romance, protection begins. Sweet book

This is a wonderful sweet read that i could not put down. The story is about Rhett who is all alone until fate in the form of a teenage prank and a giant scorpion brings him Joselina. After much drama and some steamy hot passion they finds their HEA. The book is well written and fast passed and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Promising start

This is the first of Lola's books I've read and I'm very biased when it comes to shifter books but this was as good start. A few little typos and grammar errors but it didn't detract too much.

I found the story to be really good but the characters needed work. The characters seemed more like teenagers rather then adults. They could use some depth and maturity. Still it's a good start to a new series. I look forward to the next book.

Pretty good one

Joseline and Rhett eventually made it together, but they had way too much self doubt. Especially him. His secret was ugly, but he had redeemed himself. There is still a mystery to be solved , so I look forward to that.
