Drew’s always been a first in martial arts competitions, and now as a dreamcatcher—keeping the people of Seattle safe from spaga attacks that would drain their life force in their sleep. All he has to do to become a full member of Team 32 is complete his first mission.
But the first person he must defend is his ex, Angelo… the only man Drew ever loved, even if he was the one to leave. Drew never got over Angelo, and it seems Angelo might feel the same, despite the heartbreak he suffered at Drew’s hands.
As the chase after a powerful and resourceful caster hits close to home, old feelings resurface. But if Angelo learns of the dreamcatchers, he’ll be a target for the spaga. And how can he trust Drew now that Drew’s keeping bigger secrets than ever?
Drew is a newly trained dreamcatcher (whose sole job is to kill evil creatures called spaga) and as per the blurb, his first night on the job brings him right into the bedroom of his ex Angelo, a guy he left but never forgot. Despite a flimsy frustrating excuse for ending things several years ago, Drew’s feelings haven’t waned and he’ll do anything to prevent the spaga from eventually draining Angelo’s life essence. Though their reunion is tentative but hopeful, what neither expects is that their intense attraction is actually due to an otherworldly connection that can further aide their plight.
This had good world building, setting up an overall arc where a powerful witch is controlling these spaga for nefarious means that must be stopped. Pretty fast paced, peppered with some action and light smexy, this ended with a solid win for Drew and Angelo but left the main conflict hanging unresolved. Good thing Drew’s “coworkers” Taka and Claw, have their chance to shine in the next two books in their efforts to stop an evil foe. This can only get better!
Clearly inspired by Native American myths and legends, Lover, Lover follows a group of secret warriors called Dreamcatchers, who spend their nights keeping sleeping people safe from soul-sucking attacks from creatures called spaga.
Drew is newly fully-fledged on his team of Dreamcatchers, and on his first mission he serendipitously ends up saving his ex – the lost love of his life – from a spaga attack. Unable to stay away, Drew immerses himself back into Angelo’s life, determined to win the younger man’s heart back, this time for good.
As a Dreamcatcher, Drew can’t reveal his duty to Angelo, making it tricky trying to win back Angelo’s love and trust after having been the one to walk away unexplained 5 years earlier. But soon enough, as these things often go, Angelo gets embroiled in Drew’s world, seemingly showing signs of his own magical gifts and possible penchant to also be worthy of becoming a Dreamcatcher alongside Drew.
I liked the premise here, and although the story was left very open-ended – for obvious extension and conclusion purposes in the direct sequels – I enjoyed following the mystery of the increasingly evolved spaga attacks and the possible magical source behind it. I also enjoyed the cast of characters, particularly warming to Drew’s Dreamcatcher buddies, Claw and Taka, who both get their own feature stories throughout the trilogy.
My only real issue, as far as plot was concerned, was that I struggled with the believability of the second-chance romance between Drew and Angelo. This may well in fact be a “me thing” because I generally dislike stories featuring couples who have been together and failed in their relationship attempts in the past. Here, though, Drew’s reasons for why he left Angelo five years ago just didn’t fly with me. It was all very childish and simply explained away with a “I was scared and my mind was messed up; I needed to go find myself” – which, by the way, was the reaction of a 29 year old man who was already living with his supposed love of his life. And he just upped and left without explanation or apology. *shakes head* To me that was all a pretty pathetic reason, and as such, I really struggled to be convinced he was worthy of Angelo all these years later. It most definitely made the whole “twin souls”, epic love thing super hard to believe. But, hey, that could just be me.
Confounding second-chance romance element aside, I liked the story in general and I found Olteano’s writing style lovely and easy to read. I daresay I’m even keen to see what happens next in Taka and Claw’s stories.
I have a thing for books with fated mates or anything resembling that. I love the idea that there is simply one person out there that is made for you and no matter what you do, you HAVE to be with them. The want, the need and yeah even the insta love does it for me and with this story, we have the Native American legend of twin souls.
We meet Drew, the youngest member of Team 32 - a team of dreamcatchers - as he is going about his day being hanging around the shared house with his teammates waiting for the moment he gets his first assignment. When the moment comes, Drew is sent to protect a human who is being targeted by a spaga… lets get this out there real quick. Spaga are magically created creatures who “sneak into unsuspecting sleeping victims’ homes at night, giving them nightmares to get them agitated and steal their life force. It’s Drew’s job as a dreamcatcher to keep the human and their dreams safe. But this time, this very first mission of Drew’s leads him to the man he walked away from five years ago, the love of his life, Angelo. Momentarily distracted by the sight of Angelo, Drew fumbles his job, with a three second eye-to-eye moment with Angelo and takes his magic pill back home.
I love that this all happened in the first chapter and that we get Drew’s inner dialogue of lament about leaving Angelo. We get the why of it and we get some serious feels. I love second chance romances and I couldn't wait to see how Drew would try to reconnect with Angelo knowing they are now in the same city.
The re-meet cute was adorable even though we have a wary Angelo of Drew after their history, but he can’t seem to help himself and allows Drew to meet him where he works so they can talk. The chemistry with these two was instant and palpable; you could feel the pull they had to one another. The chemistry is so important as it gives that feeling, that pull which allowed the quick decisions made about their romance to be believed and everything that happens after.
I appreciated the take on the Native American legend of the dreamcatchers. How their “boss” Aashi, who is technically a spider, is the one who sends them out on missions and how each dreamcatcher is recruited to become a soldier of the ancestors. I loved the take on twin souls and how rare Drew and Angelo are, to be not only twin souls, but have the life force to also be dreamcatchers and together, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
Sure, the forgiving and falling back in love was fast and simply with Drew and Angelo, but they are twin souls, so it’s not a problem for me at all. I liked them together, I liked how they wanted to protect one another even before Angelo learns about the world Drew lives in. I loved how Angelo accepts who Drew fully is and the reason for his decision.
The story was fun and fluffy, just as a Dreamspun Beyond book should be. It was full of the paranormal with a twist and the romance that made me grin.
This story contains an exciting mix of evil creatures launching brutal attacks on unsuspecting people, a secret team of fighters with various abilities, a range of sacred weapons originating with the ruling body of ancestors, and a young man out to prove himself only to discover there is much more to his job than he ever suspected. All of these elements make for a great action/adventure, but the added complications between the main characters, Drew and Angelo, on a purely personal level made this story even more exciting. They have their pasts and resurfacing feelings to deal with on top of the danger, revelations, and surprises they are exposed to on a daily basis. It certainly had me engaged and eager to find out more.
Lover, Lover has an interesting new take on life-draining monsters, such as the most commonly known succubi. I loved the idea of a paranormal organisation that protected people from these monsters and the evil magicians who would summon them. We’re introduced to this through Drew’s point of view as a new initiate starting his first mission.
Overall, I didn’t bond with or enjoy the character of Drew. Though well-crafted and with clear depth, his inherent selfishness just put me off, but he was redeemed slightly near the end of the book as his and Angelo’s relationship deepened. I really wanted to know more about the other people in Team 32, Claw and Taka, who had been at the job a lot longer and really didn’t get as much screen time as I would have liked.
Angelo is a somewhat of a contradiction with seeming a bit of a pushover near the start of the novel, not wanting to let the ex who abandoned him back into this life, then to the fierce warrior he seemed at the end of the book. He was also never fleshed out as much as our main character, Drew, leaving us wanting just that bit more information about him. Their relationship was enjoyable to see build back up, with both characters facing the issues from Drew leaving years before and discussing them as they reared their ugly head. However, I feel it was more of a hollow obstacle thrown in for the sake of character growth or to prepare them and the reader for certain plot points later on in the novel.
The ending was hugely unsatisfying, as it never addressed the climax nor whether the antagonist was defeated. I get the feeling that the ending, as a whole, was rushed a bit to fit Dreamspinner’s 50k word limit on their Dreamspun Beyond line. The editing was excellent, though, and I didn’t notice the absence of any scenes that might have been cut; however, the information and wrap up left it clear we were missing something, whether an earlier scene or an epilogue that might have concluded the plot.
This ending is an obvious cliffhanger for other books in the same series, but I don’t think I’ll be reading them.
I've never read any books by Liv Olteano, but the cover and the blurb drew me in. Lover, Lover has hints of Native American folklore woven through it in the form of the well known dreamcatcher as well as the myths of the spider woman. For me that's something new and a fresh take on the paranormal which I like. http://thetbrpile.weebly.com/reviews/...
Drew is finally a fully fledged dreamcatcher! Then he’s protecting Angelo and it wasn’t supposed to be like this. This is enough to knock Drew off his game. He keeps Angelo safe from the spaga, but he’s also aware he’s still very much in love with the guy he walked away from. Drew decides he’s going to get Angelo back. It’s not as easy as he expected. Angelo isn’t exactly eager to get back with the guy that broke his heart. Then there’s the whole being a dreamcatcher thing. Keeping the world safe from from evil is a full time job. A full time job that can’t be explained to people who have no knowledge of the paranormal world. Drew knows he’s fighting a losing battle. He’ll get the man he’s always loved or the job he’s worked so hard for. Then Angelo shows up where he isn’t supposed to be.
I enjoyed this book, but at the same time felt it bore the burden of world building for a series. At times I felt the exploration of forgiveness and acceptance took a backseat to learning about the magics involved in the story. I liked the magics and the explanations were needed, but yeah. It was a little overwhelming. I really wanted to see more of how Angelo dealt with friends who urged him to move on when he was still in love. I think I also had some issues with Drew’s reasons for leaving. He was so in love he was scared? It made sense as I read it, but as I think back on it that reasoning feels vaguely contrived. People have certainly done dumber things so I won’t say this couldn’t happen, but it simply didn’t resonate with me.
If there’s a next book in this series I’ll definitely be picking it up. Especially since now we know how the dreamcatcher world works. I want to see where things are going. Is this going to turn into an epic battle for humankind? Will it just be a big battle for Seattle? Either way, I want to know where this is going, who else will be involved, and what powers they’re bringing to the party.
This book I've picked by recommendation from a friend and I really liked it. This author is new to me but I've liked the writing style and imaginative fantasy settings in Seattle.
It felt like an alternate reality with the beings out of space that have limited powers on Earth. Such beings select a group of humans (dreamcatchers) they enhance with special powers to fight night terrors (spagas) that drain regular humans of their life force while they are sleeping.
The groups/teams are small since they tap into powers of the being they work with. There are also humans that can tap into Earth magic to cast spagas who by draining other humans add powers to the caster. I hope I'm describing situation correctly, since that's how I understood it.
One of the dreamcatchers' team members, Drew, is sent on assignment to save a regular human who is under spagas attach and that human happens to be his ex lover whom he abandoned to become a dreamcatcher. The simple assignment turns complicated by spagas being "smarter" than expected and by Angelo waking up when he should have been sleeping through the entire battle. Drew messes up by not following all of the "cleaning procedure" steps and has to go back to Angelo's apartment to finish the task and he has to do it inconspicuously. He decides to meet Angelo in person and make up a reason to go to his apartment with Angelo's consent.
Drew still loves his ex, Angelo, but he is conflicted because his job does not allow deep personal involvement to avoid spilling paranormal secrets to the unsuspecting humans. Since Angelo attracts spagas on his own, Drew is allowed to pursue Angelo as love interest though it will be hard to convince Angelo that Drew still loves him and wants to get back together.
This book is a really good start of the series I plan to follow.
Drew left Angelo five years ago. Now he sees him and the pull to be with him is stronger than before. He wants another chance. But Nw Drew is a dreamcatcher and he doesn't know how that will affect him having a relationship.
Angelo still has feelings for Drew but doesn't want to be hurt again. when he finds himself back in Drew's life. But things with Drew are far from normal.
This is a unique story and I found it refreshing. I loved the take on the Dreamcatcher and Spider-woman legends. There is a good plot, lots of action and the romance between Drew and Angelo is sweet. The story did feel like part of a series and at times I wondered if I had missed something but there is plenty of information to keep you up to speed, it isn't overbearing or too much and I followed along fine.
If you like myths, legends, dreamcatcher, lots of action, hot men, and a sweet romance you will enjoy this book.
I love paranormal/sci fi! This really intrigued me because of the unique world building. Dream catchers fight Spaga who steal life force by invading regular human dreams. Each Dream catcher has a unique set of gifts to fight these Spaga and must do their job in secrecy.
While I found most of the fantasy stuff to be interesting, not all of it made sense to me and I found the Spaga to be a bit too easy to catch.
I’m not a fan of reunion stories and this was simply too easy for me to find really entrancing. Drew (for some reason) totally abandoned Angelo years ago and despite the INTENSE connection between the two. When they are reunited Angelo accepts Drew back pretty much instantaneously and it wasn’t very rewarding.
The other-worldly aspects of the story were interesting enough to keep me reading the series but this was a little too easy, too sugary and not enough substance for me to love it.
I liked Liv Olteano's previous books, but here I couldn't get over the handwaved reasons for a breakup of supposed soulmates five years earlier who then get back together after ten minutes of conversation. The premise is interesting, but so far there isn't much lore exploration either.
Drew is the new member of team 32. A team of “Super beings” who fights spagas (demons) who drain people of their life force during their sleep. In order to become a full member of the team, Drew has to succeed on his first mission. Protecting an innocent and kill the spagas.
But when the innocent is Angelo, Drew’s ex-boyfriend, and love of his life, Drew realizes that he can’t be full without Angelo. But how to convinced Angelo that Drew is here for good when his life is full of danger? I liked this book.
The story is from Drew’s pov. He’s funny, smart, fierce, and blunt. He’s also completely in love with Angelo and feels guilt for breaking his heart 5 years ago. However, Drew fights for Angelo and to prove to him he’s sorry and really wants to be with him for good, until the end of their lives. I liked it about Drew, the fact that he acknowledges his wrongdoing, and tries to make amends, pleased me.
Angelo is sweet, smart and very kind. He loves Drew, never stopped, but he can’t send him away, he can’t turn his back on him. I love Angelo. He’s so sweet and adorable, but not weak. He’s a good match for Drew.
There’s also Taka and Claw the other two hot members of the team that I want to know better. And Aashi, their boss, a spider/woman, or a woman/spider, I’m not really sure actually, but she’s scary and funny, but terrifying.
The plot was good, but a little bit confused and messy. We cleary understand their universe and what they are and what the spagas are, but the plot itself was a little bit hasty. Everything was fast without really being developed. But it’s book 1 of the series, so the basis is settled, and I think the series will get better and better. Anyway, I’ll look forward to the other books, because even if everything wasn’t perfect, the story was still good and the characters loveable. 3.5 stars for Team 32
